The Sophienburg Museum & Archives in New Braunfels
Description
Privilege
Very interesting to learn about the town and how it came about.
It was very interesting to hear about how the US gave the Germans land here in texas
MoreNot impressed! Its not a big musuem and pricey. We spent an hour there and seen and read everything they had to offer. Tried asking questions about my German sur name and Sylvia told me "oh that would be $10-$15 an hour for THEM TO RESEARCH." Then rambled on for another 10 minutes about insignificant information. She did make sure she got me the business card for their archives coordinator. She also referred me to their web site claiming I could do my own research. When I tried their website, the first thing that pops up is DONATE! The menu is blocked by their cookies statement and unless you agree you cant get to the menu. The musuem for active duty military is free which is nice however, if you are a retiree it doesnt matter to them.
MoreVery disappointed
Great newly renovated event room! Thank you for making our baby shower a wonderful event.
MoreFriendly staff, and super interesting.
Was small, friendly, clean, and cool shady rest spot. A few movies to watch to get full prospective of history. And FREE to Active Duty Military and Veterans. Top notch place. Would like to go back when we have more time.
MoreEveryone should check this place out. Interesting history and things to see. Also gift shop is pretty cool and the Ladies are very knowledgeable and helpful.
MoreThe Sophienburg museum provides an interesting background on the history and experience of German settlers in the region. Exhibits range from the vessels they came in to life in town. Movies provide additional detail on how and why they came and their influence on modern day education. Allow 45-60 minutes to take it all in. Excellent value if youre interested in regional history.
MoreYou must go into Sophies gift shop it is amazing. It has holiday themed items, as well as great day to day items. The young lady that runs the gift shop is very helpful and obviously takes pride in her work.
MoreSo much to see and learn. I would have never guessed so much about New Braunfels. Spent 2 hours in there.

Incredible local history! Love it!
The staff was so knowledgeable! I learned more about the history of New Braunfels. I would recommend visiting this small museum if you have time.
MoreVery interesting and I learned a great deal about the first German settlers to Greune Texas.
More$8 well spent. The staff was so knowledgeable! I learned more about the history of New Braunfels today in the tour than I did after an hour at the library looking through NB history books. I would recommend visiting this small museum if you have time.
MoreGlad we took the time to go there
Fun interesting quite a bit of information to take in. I will definitely go through again, just to make sure I absorbed it all.
MoreVery informative museum. Very well laid out. Enjoyed the history of the first Germans to come to Texas.
MoreClean quiet and well maintained. Staff was friendly and knowledgable.
Ahhhh, this place is a mind- vacation! While passing through the Hill country of Texas I stopped to see the cabin home of an early day Texas botanist and was told of this museum so I went there the next day. From his botany prints to artifacts from early day settlers in Texas I was mesmerized for hours. Go see what Texas nature is all about.
MoreAmazing tour guides and such beautiful history!! Makes me feel proud to be born and raised here!!
MoreAn excellent display of the German immigration into Texas. Well kept and structured!
MoreGreat museum to know more about New Braunfels and the German migration to Texas
The lady at the front was extremely and the hag made me and my sister not even really want to go in. We paid the $8/each anyway and the whole museum was just one room that took 5 mins to walk through and be over with. Huge regrets.
MoreNeed to visit at least once. Lots of great historical exhibits, hopefully theyll add more native American exhibits.
MorePacks a lot of history into a small space!
The staff couldnt have been nicer it more helpful.
The staff here was very friendly and helpful! They knew exactly where everything was and took a very minimal amount of time to retrieve the requested items. I will definitely be telling people about this place.
MoreNice shop for German Christmas items....was disappointed that museum was not free
MoreA really special museum that makes one appreciate the region more. Make sure you take a tour, which is free. If you go without a guide you will doubt the value of it.
MoreBoutique museum of German immigrants into Texas
Great place for the story of New Braunfels.
Got great assistance from LaVerne in the archives room!

MoreBeautiful historical site
Very beautiful and great docent with great stories
Great local museum.
Archive employee openly hostile for no reason.
Located on the original site founded by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, the museum helps tell the story of New Braunfels & the people who settled & thrived here. Historical records, maps, & genealogical information also there.
