Gastropub with upstairs dining room and on Sundays, a courtyard cafe for the flower market crowd.
Highly recommend Royal Oak. The team is great if you need to organise, super helpful! The food is delicious and the private room upstairs is lovely.
Not bad for a Youngs pub, food was average, had a couple of half-decent beers on, and is in a good location. Is a very nice, proper old school kind of boozer inside - but run in a too modern way.
A vintage Pub with good prices and snacks. The interior is classic and beautiful and the backyard is nice and airy
I brought some friends visiting from USA here for a traditional Sunday roast- was very average with most of veg undercooked and the vegan wellington burnt and very small in portion size. Overpriced and very forgettable - a shame given the other good reviews.
Taking a stroll through the hussle and bustle of east London and came down to Columbia road. What a gem! What a wonderful stroke of luck it was to come across THE royal oak! The staff were some of the most friendly and dazzling people I have come across in my life. I hope they stay golden. Pints poured perfectly. I cannot stress that enough. Then my tastebuds really went for a trip to outer space when I took a bite of the delicious ceasar salad! I truly wonder if ceasar himself was back there making it! All is to say this is a magical place- I hope it continues to inspire people for years to come !!!!!
Still a fantastic pub in a great part of town. Pleasant bar staff and great selection of drinks. Cant help thinking of the pub 22 years ago when it opened 5am Sunday morning and all clubbers descended on it after the Joiners Arms etc...chaos.Lovely pub and memories- GO!
Friendly staff that know the area! Decent Guinness
Never had a bad experience here. Lots of local charm and personality; you wouldn’t tell it’s part of a pub chain!Good choices on the beer front and we’ll executed classic cocktails, along with great food. The chips were 10/10.
Love the Sunday roasts here. Super staff and awesome ales.
Very nice pub for lunch with my son:)
Excellent pub. Great service and delicious food. Highly recommend!!
Really good Sunday roast with a great busy vibe. However, It’s popularity makes it difficult to get a table and meant a long wait before we were even allowed to order food. You can book a table upstairs or take your chances as we did in the bar.
This is the local water hole! Great food, drinks and atmosphere. I was back here 3 times over the 3 days I was in London
Yes. Best for day drinking before it fills up like a beehive.
Went here because it was where Goodnight Sweetheart was filmed, a great atmosphere and a friendly welcome.
The vegetarian Sunday roast is absolutely delicious, probably the best I’ve ever had. Very good wine list. The staff is lovely and attentive. The atmosphere is great and the decoration is beautiful. I’d give 5 stars if it wasn’t for the deserts, their quality can be improved. Brownie came with vanilla ice cream rather than caramel ice cream (as stated), and it was cold and dry with a strong taste of flour. The honey cake was also dry. Regardless, I’d still go back as it was a great experience (maybe not the deserts next time)
Nice pub! but please can the bar staff learn how to pour drinks. The Guinness should have been left a while longer before being served. My larger had no head and was not even filled to the top and my "Limey" Gin and Tonic could off had more than one slice of lime in it.
Lovely pub, nice enclosed outdoor area. The roast runs out quickly on a Sunday
My favourite place to go for amazing food and good vibes in London! The staff are amazing and feels like family. 💘
UPDATE : It’s the 5th of April and the toilets are lovely indeed. 👍🏻🪩 Thank you new owner.______\_Used to be a nice pub but even the new owner doesn’t care about the WORST toilets in all of east london. It is absolutely horrific for a pub serving food !
Nice staff, really friendly, im really sad to say the beef roast was not great at all
One of the best pubs in London.Great crowd, nice staff, fab area 👌🏻
Best staff, lovely drinks + ambience and proper Sunday roast!!
Disappointing roast dinner! Booking system is ineffective, staff were reluctant to serve/seat us and once we had the roast, the meat was over cooked and the portions were small.
First time visit today. Popped in for coffee. Friendly staff and cosy atmosphere. Will definitely be back.
Went here for dinner and ordered drinks, was told last minute (after we orderedthat u18s werent allowed in after 8pm. Had spent 30 minutes in here before anyone mentioned anything. Poor customer service and handling. Very few people wearing masks, over crowded, took me 10 minutes to pay the bill, not a great experience.
Average Sunday roast with very watery gravy. Slow service - we waited half an hour before finally having to ask for menus and the same when it came to paying.
Nice pub but jeeez its sooo expensive! £7 a pint and £28 for house white bottle. Defo not somewhere Id come regular at those prices.
We went on the pub website to book but it only let do a provisional enquiry and ten the next day, the day we wanted to go, at about lunch time they let you know if you have a booking or not. I found this very unfriendly or cumbersome. Why not do what all places do and give us a booking or not . A customer does not feel that wanted ....too much admin
Really enjoyed this local pub. Good atmosphere and friendly, welcoming service. Also very dog friendly.
Great pub. Really nice atmosphere. Short of staff at the moment, so a bit slow at the bar.
Only visited the Royal Oak because of it being on Goodnight Sweetheart. We went in for drinks but my partner left his pint because he said it didn’t taste very nice. My wine was ok though!
Family brought me here for Fathers day dinner 2021.To describe the experience as chaotic would be generous. Two of the five roasts on the menu were crossed out when we arrived, and the beef had run out by the time wed ordered.Took about 90 mins from sit down to eating. Only got told the cauliflower cheese wed ordered was off the menu when the main dishes were served! They offered free desserts as a bit of compensation, but then it was revealed the sticky toffee pudding had run out too. I felt really sorry for the waitress who had to convey this repeated bad news. To her credit, she was very charming in the circumstances. On the upside, the roast beef was pretty good, even if one, (yeah oneslice with trimmings for £18.50 is seriously taking the piss. We were in a nice private space upstairs which was very nice, but all that, does not make up for failing to have available, a lot of whats on the menu. The management should be bloody ashamed, especially as were all trying to support bringing the economy back to life post Covid lockdown. If this is somewhere that describes itself as a gastropub then "Gawd help us".
A perfect roast after the flower market.A table of four, we tried the chicken, the beef and the pork belly roast and we were all unanimous: delicious! In addition the portion are generous and the dishes are fairly priced. But where these guys excel is the scotch eggs. The dessert menu is a bit short to my test but when you do scotch eggs like that... all is forgiven
Great experience and lovely staff! The spot of this pub its something really outstanding, greetings to the chef and waitresses
Lovely pub! Featured in both Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Legend. The staff is amazing and accommodating. They went above and beyond to recreate our drinks from one of the films. I cant wait to return!
What an amazing place!! Fantastic roast and brilliant staff to boot - look out for Louie! Extraordinary service and the chefs were more than willing to accommodate for all our dietary needs. Exceptional.
Great place and lovely staff- my favourite pub! My Cousin was a friend of the late John Young. Infact we have a Youngs Umbrella in the garden which was sent from Young for his birthday a few years ago! A family friend- Colnel Walter Lamb used to judge the Young s Dray Horses. The.staff really are fantastic at the Royal Oak but I am really shocked that they only get 20 minute break every 6 hours! This would not have been the case if John Young was still at the helm.Really do hope that Youngs appreciate and value their staff as much as their customers do. As a recently returned local resident I know that my view is shared widely in this fantastic community.
Staff - wonderful, friendly, they couldnt do enough. The atmosphere was so relaxed. We booked for a meal - a Sunday roast. Wow, it was delicious. Will be back!
What a tremendous old fashion pub this is. Sunday’s may provide impossible due to the hectic flower market but still worth the wait as the Sunday lunches are delicious. Great range of beers and ales this pub has always got a welcoming atmosphere and a friendly crowd.
Pretty average for a Saturday lunch. Buttermilk chicken seemed to be grilled after being fried. The bun was past toasted, putting a burnt taste across the whole meal. The chunky chips rather overdone too, pub wasn’t heaving, so no real excuse. Will avoid in future.
Sunday roasts here are one of my favourites in London. They do a very good Bloody Mary! Must book ahead or you won’t get a seat.
Delicious Sunday roast, tried both the chicken and beef. Is right next to the Sunday flower market as well. Recommend getting your meal earlier in the day as they can run out of certain foods.
Awesome spot for a Sunday roast. Food was great and the service was friendly. A great place for a local refuge from the buzzing flower market, with good beer and good vibes. A younger, hipper crowd, but nothing pretentious, and a classic English pub feel.
This is my favourite pub in London. Cozy, lots of seats, great beer and lovely food. Really worth a trip around Christmas time since it’s very atmospheric. 10/10 (though google will only let me give five stars)
Worst Christmas dinner ever. The food was terrible. The staff were unwelcoming and aggressive when the person who had a vegetarian meal moved seats. The food was basic. For a short beef rib they served a beef stew. They refused to give more roast potatoes to such a minuscule meal. For chocolate cake they served a tiny dry fairy chocolate cake. For £35 a head you’d expect more.
Lovely roast dinner and great location. They only serve 125ml glasses of wine in the dining room and in my opinion shouldn’t be charging service at 12.5% if they make you go downstairs for a larger drink. Very nice and cosy pub though.
Roast = 4Bar Service = 4Food Service = 2.5Went for a Sunday roast earlier today. Cozy but lively pub, with a yummy chicken roast. Their stuffing looked a bit more like pork meatballs, but other than that - the table was happy with the chicken & pumpkin roasts.Since its normally buzzing on Sundays (we went from 1230-4), service isnt very attentive or available. They forgot the Yorkshire pudding for 3:4 roasts & the stuffing in one. All orders are placed at the bar; bar/drink service was quite fast.
Lovely old, traditionally furnished pub, where the seating circles around a serving bar is in the centre of the room. Had a nice pale ale...the name of which escapes me... and some hand cut chips, portion was decent for £3.50, also comes with complimentary aioli. A good spot for a quiet Monday night drink all in all!
Spacious pub with gently buzzing atmosphere, however not overly busy - you can get to the bar and get a seat on a Saturday night which is unusual for the area. Quiet dining room upstairs where I had the beef ribs and kimchi which was superb and worth the slightly high price. Could do with having a few more ales on tap. Will definitely remember this one when Im in the area again.
