The Royal Oak - Gastropub in George, South Africa
We had a lovely meal here this evening. A really lovely pub with very friendly staff. We had the 6-course menu and very glad that we did. The food was a really high standard and having the 6-courses means you can try both dishes on each course which were very different dishes. The homemade brioche was amazing - so much so we had a second loaf when offered! Overall an amazing experience and we would definitely love to visit again soon.
For 1 star Michelin, this was a disappointing experience for us. The tasting menu is genuinely a time capsule for a questionable 70s cookbook, with clashing flavours & unnerving soggy texture across most of the dishes. Fancy hospital food come to mind due to overall blandness. That said, if you are a member of the Boomer generation, you might enjoy this tasting menu as it feels very of “that time”.Ingredients are quality, the service was good & knowledgeable.
Amazing food, friendly staff, great drinks and atmosphere. Very accommodating
Their 6 dish tasting menu is absolutely fantastic! Service was great and every dish was interesting and different - definitely worth the trip.
Great night at the Royal Oak. Food was amazing. Friendly and receptive staff. Free corkage on a Sunday. Will be back and recommend !
Consistently one of our favourite restaurants.Outstanding food and service
Exceptional dining experience masquerading as a gastro pub - the fact they have a Michelin star says it all really. Can’t believe I have a restaurant of this quality 5 mins drive from my house. The only problem, booking a table. Book well in advance as it’s very popular - every time I’ve looked I’ve never been able to get one sooner than in a couple weeks time.
Very nice pub with a pleasant garden out the front. Friendly staff
Wonderful! Friendly small place. Superb food and fun people in the cosy bar.
A wonderful experience for a special occasion. First class, food, service and ambience 🙂👍🏻
lovely place, friendly staffs, good food.
Had the 6 course tasting menu. Very friendly serving staff and the chefs delivered and explained each course. Lots of in season ingredients used. Well presented and very tasty. Off the beaten track, but well worth a visit.
The village is small but cute and there are wonderful walks around to work the appetite before sitting down. The walk that start at the back of the church old graveyard follows the Centenary Way and theres an obvious 25 walk across fields and up a small hill with a nice panoramic view.Nice selection of beers and wine, some very premium but some very affordable with good value for money. The atmosphere is cosy and relaxed and the staff is experienced and efficient. If feels like a well run operation, unsurprisingly since the same senior team has ran successful pubs around the coswolds for well over a decade now.The menu is understated but the food that comes out is very refined and delicious with lots and little "in between" courses that taste wonderful. This is more Michelin star than gastro pub. Overall a wonderful experience with the only deception being the gap in quality between some of the food options, there are clearly better choices than others on the menu, for instance we found the fish course disappointing.
Lovely inglenook fireplace and a great pint ..known for its 5 star food but also a great bar for a drink ..
Excellent Sunday lunch that far surpassed our expectations. The hospitality was some of the best we have had, the three courses+ were all generous, delicious and great value for money.
Thank you the team for a wonderful lunch! We had the 3 course meal and every course is delicious, the pre-meal dish added before the 1st course is a nice touch. Price is reasonable too. Small improvement is the texture of the meat is a bit tough…the cod can be more flavourful! We would return if we stop by the area again :)
Exceptional! We love to eat at Michelin star restaurants as a treat and I can highly recommend The Royal Oak. The food is flavoursome, expertly presented and original. The staff are attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming with a real lovely posh pub feel but not pretentious. One of my favourite Michelin star restaurants.
Was very kindly taken to the Royal Oak for my birthday lunch recently. I really enjoyed what they are doing there! The food was high calibre as you would expect from a Michelin Star, delicious and innovative. The staff and patron were the stars though, so friendly/welcoming and added greatly to our experience. I would strongly recommend!
Exceptional dinner here. Just a fantastic pace to eat with very friendly staff. Well behaved dogs ok
Great restaurant and enjoyed a really well put together Sunday lunch. Fantastic wine, fantastic service. We’ll be back!
Fantastic soufflé to finish off great tasting menu, thank you for a lovely treat.
Weve been following this amazing team since their days in Chipping Campden. The food continues to be superb, staff excellent and the wine list is a joy. This restaurant/pub is definitely worth a detour.
Had a fabulous Sunday lunch. Food and service could not have been better. Looking forward to returning for dinner.
Exceptional food! The art of fine dining in a wonderfully friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommend.
We had a lovely meal here on Saturday, food was gorgeous and the service was on point - a special mention to Paris who we had a laugh with as she guessed my order. Having been to 182 michelin restaurants, I wouldnt hesitate to recommend :D
Today we spent the most wonderful afternoon enjoying food prepared by Tom.Delicious and beautifully presented.Paris was a brilliant hostess and we would certainly recommend a visit for that special occasion.Thank you Tom and Paris. We will be back.Di and Mike
Fantastic place, such a warm friendly welcome, hot water bottles and blankets to make outdoor dining comfortable. Excellant menu choice and high quality food. Great value and will be back soon.
Popped in to The Royal Oak a Cup of Tea earlier after a local walk! I live locally and have passed the pub so many times, and always wondered what it is like. The Staff were really friendly and welcoming and the customer service was superb! Had a really nice cup of tea with the family sat out the front in the sun! They even offered us hot water bottles which was a really nice touch.I will definitely be coming back for food in the future, especially with the Michelin Star status that they have. Look forward to trying the Roast Venison which was new on the Menu!Thank you again for a great experience!
Always have loved this place - before it was done up too! Although a lot grander than before, still a relaxing atmosphere with a lovely big fireplace, pool and chess in the bar..great service, friendly staff.
This is our place for celebrating special events and once again we enjoyed a fabulous wedding anniversary at the Royal Oak. We have been lucky to know Richard and Solanche for a number of years now and the food has always been exquisite, using the best locally sourced ingredients that the Cotswolds has to offer. We are always made to feel so welcome, the atmosphere is relaxed and the service is excellent. This is why we keep it for special occasions - see you for my birthday!
A fantastic fine dining restaurant and a village pub. Beautiful food, relaxed charming staff and a lovely atmosphere too. Richard Cravens food is not to be missed!
If you enjoy food then you must visit these guys. Staff are really friendly and feels like a nice local village pub, but the people who cook the food here know what there doing, every dish across there 4 course menu was executed perfectly. Beautiful food in lovely warm welcoming surroundings. Will be visiting these guys again soon.
A truly special evening. My partner took me here for a birthday meal (we did not call ahead and let the proprietors knowjust booked a table for 2.We were greeted like old friends at the welcome/entrance bar, had drinks ordered and sat in the lounge/bar to have these whilst our table was prepared. A beautiful, low ceiling room with the most glorious Inglenook fireplace. We loved the parlour games that were placed around this room.We were given the menu and wine list to peruse whilst we waited and our order was taken. We were then seated in the restaurant, a beautiful high ceiling oak room and a few minutes later were beginning our starters. The food was sublime. Beautifully presented and superb flavours. This restaurant is now our favourite place to eat and unwind together at. It had the perfect atmosphere and super staff with exquisite food.Cannot wait to visit again and I cannot recommend this restaurant enough.Thank you for making my birthday so special, I was touched with the thoughtful Madelines platter at the end when we thanked you for making it a wonderful birthday meal for me.
As with any Michelin starred restaurant expectations were high. Sometimes we expect too much, and what normally get a "that was really nice" instead becomes a list of small disappointments which the build up, and often high prices, seeming to mask just getting stuck in to some decent scran. Our visit to the Royal Oak ticked every box. It is slightly expensive, but not excessively so, and certainly value for money. Staff are friendly and efficient, but not in your face or pompous. And the food is wonderful. Locally sourced, creative, beautifully presented and cooking absolutely spot on.The tartare of white beetroot surprises and delights. The best starter dish I had in 2019. The red stag (photowas stunning. Cooked to perfection, complemented by root vegetables, set on a fruity but it overpowering sauce.A Michelin starred restaurant in a pub that still feels like a pub.
Very expensive for what it is.Too much game with no alternative. My wife’s pheasant was pink and by the time it was fixed to her liking we other three had finished our lunch. My ravioli was obviously deconstructed but ok and fallow deer main good but not enough accompaniments and a bit on the cool side.Quince soufflé was very good.Just a bit disappointed for 1 star.
Excellent tasting menu from the chef formerly at the Chefs Dozen in Chipping Camden. Great ambeince and service, too. Highly recommended.
Outstanding in all respects. Notice someone posted that there was no vegetarian options - it clearly says on the menu - Vegan & allergy free food available. You just need to ask. :)
Top class in all departments. We went here for Sunday lunch on a recommendation that said there were some slightly more unusual dishes. What we found was amazing. First impression was the building itself which is so fresh and clean looking inside and out. We were greeted as soon as we walked through the door in a relaxed way as if we were regulars before being shown to a table in what I guess was an orangery. It all looked stylish though I would have preferred a more normal chair but it was fine. Menu was a real problem for me, so many gorgeous choices. I went for pigs head lasagne which had such flavour and looked amazing. My partner has mackerel and forced rhubarb. Im not doing justice to the descriptions but they were special. Both had venison with a Yorkshire pudding. Meat so so moist but some strong flavoured pulled meat in the Yorkshire that melted in the mouth. Delicate cabbage, celeriac and the best crispy roast potatoes. And as an extra I have to confess to cauliflower cheese on the side. In time i followed that with a tall souffle with earl grey ice-cream which was so light it didnt matter about the cauliflower cheese or lively bread and dropping we started off with. I hesitate to recommend The Royal Oak, but only because I think it is going to end up so popular that I wont be able to get in again without a long wait! Im sure the awards are coming. Thanks for an unforgettable lunch and Im pleased to say we have friends who have just booked as a result.
We have been following Richard’s cooking for about 6 years and our meal tonight was probably the best we have ever had. The food absolutely faultless and the service was the perfect blend of friendly and relaxed.
Warm and friendly reception. Made us feel really welcome as soon as we arrived. The food was really impressive, some really creative dishes that we both enjoyed sampling. Staff all really knowledgeable about dishes and there was a chilled out atmosphere that was nice to eat and talk in. We will be back!
Brilliant food, great welcoming atmosphere. Its our fourth visit so far and weve not been disappoibted once
First time Ive visited since the new owners have revamped the place. Looks lovely inside now, still has the charm of the old pub but much more bright and airy. Very friendly staff and a dog bed for the pooch - what more could you ask for?!
No vegetarian food available here! Was offered a cheese board. 4 small slices of very nice cheese arrived with a few crackers and honey. No fruit or salad with it.Being vegetarian doesnt mean I dont want to eat a normal portion. This is the most pretentious place Ive ever been to offering "black pudding and the pigs head lasagne". It very over priced with a snobby atmosphere.Avoid. Ive had more enjoyable food on a motorway service area. The pint of ale I had was good though.
We had a superb lunch here a couple of days ago. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming and the IPA I had was fantastic and well kept. The food we had was completely flawless. From the bread served with home made butter to the pigs head and black pudding lasagne it was just sublime. Its great to see such a high standard of cooking, and it very certainly is.Id recommend this place to anyone.
Saturday night, restaurant was not full yet the service was very slow. Starter was terrible the plates were so cold that the sauce was congealing on the plate, same with the main course, venison. Couldnt risk a sweet as the previous courses were so bad. The only slight consolation was that the beer was good. So we left £150 lighter for four people would never return.
Stunning place, food has to be the best in Glos. Could easily be Michelin star quality. Great wine and beer selection, food from bar also good. But the restaurant is exceptional, service is amazing and food out of this world, highly recommend
The Royal Oak is one of our favourite restaurants. The service is always very friendly and you are made to feel at home. The products they use are locally sourced and excellent quality so the menu is always changing. If you are looking for an outstanding dining experience, this is the place to be!
Superb food served by chef Richard who previously owned The Chefs Dozen in Chipping Campden. Using ingredients sourced as locally as possible this place is set to become a top eating destination in South Warwickshire. The ambiance is warm and relaxed as are the front of house staff. Thoroughly recommend.
Wonderful restaurant. They recently relocated from Chipping Campden (Chefs Dozenand the food is just as splendid as it was there.Great service, the staff are friendly, and a good wine selection. After our meal we even got to have coffee by the roaring fire. Lovely. The new place is really nicely decorated.Highly recommended!
Had Lunch at the Royal Oak and it was lovely, the Staff were so attentive and the food was 5*. A great place to enjoy a meal in the oldest pub in the Country.
