The Root Note in La Crosse
Description
Privilege
Absolutely, hands down, my favorite coffee spot in La Crosse. Their iced oat milk mocha is top tier. Pair it with their breakfast biscuit sandwich thats loaded with greens, you wont be disappointed!
MoreI hadnt been in this shop for a couple of years, so the remodel was a bit of a surprise. A fairly standard alt coffee shop is now a bright, clean, open space that manages to avoid being cold. There is a simple menu of hot food as well as alcoholic offerings. My breakfast biscuit was delicious. A perfectly-flavored, soft biscuit that didnt fall apart, with a nicely-cooked easy egg and tasty meat and sauteed mushroom for seasoning. I dont usually expect something this good from a coffee shop, honestly. The scone was better than average, too, with bits of fresh fruit and a good balance between sweetness and pockets of butter/salt.The coldpress was bright and fruity, as it should be, and every person who helped me was friendly.Overall, much more than I was expecting (in the best way).
MoreThe costumer service was phenomenal! For how busy they were, they asked us if we wanted water and if we needed anything multiple times. The staff went out of their way to accommodate our large group. The menu is vegan and vegetarian friendly with limited options, but still good options. All the food we ordered was delicious! Definitely recommend the chili. It is super cute and aesthetically pleasing inside the cafe. The bathrooms are gorgeous and clean. I especially love how they are contentious of the environment. On a final note, I highly recommend The Root Note!
MoreSuperb place. Awesome atmosphere, cool people, nice location. I ordered a cortado with a special natural process coffee and it was utterly amazing. The barista who made my drink was super cool too--clearly very passionate about coffee and know his stuff. I will definitely be returning.
MoreGreat third wave coffee shop! I was in town for work and had a pour over and THE BEST scone (blueberry lemonI’ve ever had in my life. And it’s not even close. The staff were super friendly and helpful as well. One of the best coffee shop experiences I’ve ever had. Thanks!
MoreGood cortados (called Gibraltarand crepes/falafel. Reasonably priced.
Loved the peach blossom white tea!
traveling through for work and stumbled into this gem of a coffee shop. double espresso - perfect, biscuit sandwich- extremely tasty, and music set list from the only ones to the replacements along with fugazi and new order couldnt have made my morning more enjoyable. sit on the stage if you can (as long as no band playingstaff is top notch!!!
MoreGreat food, staff is great. Ambiance is nice, took me a little bit to adjust to the remodel, overall I like it.
MoreNormally I’ve had great experiences with dine in, the food quality is always amazing, but I got some of their chili to go because it’s really good. The sizes used to be cup or bowl and when I first asked for cup the cashier said it changed to one bigger size. So I posted a picture of what I got. I called and complained that I thought this wasn’t fair for how much the chili costs for the “bigger” size. They Just said someone made a mistake and they will let the kitchen know but I wish they would’ve offered me a refund it’s not like someone should still pay as much as they used to ask or maybe offer two sizes. This seems like cutting corners to me. My first food jobs I was always taught the real point is to make sure people are getting what they paid for at the very least. To-go shouldn’t compromise quality and I hope that improves so I can be happy ordering again and not feeling ripped off.
MoreGreat food, great atmosphere, great staff. If youre in Lacrosse you should stop in at least once.
MoreStaff is great, helpful. Food is wonderful, trivia night is fun
Loved this spot for breakfast! The coffee and food were outstanding. The space is bright and open. Would love to go back to try their cocktails if I’m ever in LaCrosse again.
MoreGreat atmosphere, very friendly staff and food and drinks are top notch!
Beautifully presented and tasting lunch and great coffee, would definitely come again, no photo of my lunch as it looked too good to wait!
MoreExcellent scones and breakfast sandwiches.
Local gem! Now all spruced up with new modern menu and ambiance.
Delicious breakfast, nice atmosphere.
Good food and drinks, nice atmosphere, great place to hangout and chill.
Great place to have a meeting, good coffee, super friendly staff
Delicious drinks that turned my morning around! The staff were a great delight too! I asked for recommendation for something refreshing but not too sweet, and the recommended tonic espresso hit the spot. We also tried the herbal tea with blueberry and it was refreshing as well. The interior is tasteful and huge with a lot of seating. I hope to stop by again to try other items!
MoreGreat (and beautifulcoffee. The cinnamon sugar crepe was fantastic too.
The Root Note is still one of the best places in La Crosse! Will always love going there. Its better than ever since it reopened this year! Amazing food, beautiful remodel.
MoreGreat atmosphere, love the new look and layout. Fun people, unique drink and good healthy food.
MoreNice place, feels too antiseptic now. I wish it had a little more of the vibe it had before the remodel.
MoreGreat coffee. Excellent scones. Tried the Triple berry. Very tasty.
Excellent coffee, well made healthy food, and nice atmosphere.
Although I’m glad they have reopened, I’d have to say it’s lost its charm with the remodel :(
MoreSuper chill vibes, delicious crepe, big tofu bowl, and delicious latte.
I stopped in La Crosse for the night on my way to a funeral. There are a few coffee shop options in the city, but this looked most like my style based on my online search. The menu is unique, but also has the classics. I bought 3 different beverages (all for myself 👀👀 because i couldnt decide on just one). My favorite was the Green Glow, which was matcha, lavender, chamomile, and tonic. All 3 were absolutely delicious. There was oat milk available, which i appreciate as someone with a milk intolerance. The barista was very friendly and helpful. We had a great chat while they made my drinks.I thought the atmosphere was nice in the shop. Lots of windows and the natural light was complimented by the white walls. Theres lots of space to sit. There were a couple of tables outside as well. The space was recently remodeled, so everything was in great shape. There is plenty of street parking right outside. The only thing I would change is having the current menu available for viewing on their website/social media. Im the kind of person that loves to analyze a menu and decide what I want before i go in. (Thanks anxiety! However the barista was patient and very willing to help me find the right beverage.I also really appreciated that all of the employees i saw were wearing masks! 💚💚💚If Im ever in the area again, The Root Note will be my first stop. ☕💜
MoreBest London fog/Earl Grey latte in town by a wide margin. Espresso drinks and menu are also amazing (got the fork- and knife-worthy Toast - highly recommend). Good people, excellent vibes, so glad theyre back.
MoreIm going to start with the good and move to the ehh...The good: it is AMAZING to have The Rootnote back, it has been a long couple of years without them. They still have the same great coffee, teas, and the new craft cocktails are a nice touch! The larger bar is a plus and I would assume the updated kitchen alleviates stress from the previous set up. The rotating craft beers are still pretty good too, but its lacking the finesse from prior. Im sure that once theyve been back up and running this will go back to normal too. The CHILI - this chili is still amazing and some of the best Ive had! If you havent tried it, go now!The ehh: The bright, white, lack of color wasnt The Rootnote I knew and loved... There is nothing wrong with it, but the draw to The Rootnote was the dark and moody ambiance that was unpretentious and showcased local art. It used to be dark and eclectic with lots of different tables, chairs, funky lights, etc., you always felt cool and mysterious just being there. Im assuming the local artwork will come back, but I wish they would have renamed this place if they were giving it a face-lift. It just doesnt FEEL like The Rootnote anymore. It seems commercialized and a bit basic in comparison to how unique it previously was. I was disappointed with how small the crepe menu had become. Why cant I get a savory crepe after 3pm and have to settle for the banana and cinnamon sugar one or vice versa, ya know? It just seems odd to section off the menu like that. Last, the layout with the stage and new kitchen didnt seem to flow as well either. Who knows if they are planning to continue with the different trivia and open mic nights they used to have, but something to consider! With all of that said, I will obviously be back, but its definitely not the fun, rustic spot it once ways, the charm that La Crosse embodies. Still a decent spot and I am sharing purely based on someone who has lived in La Crosse for awhile (5+ years).
MoreGreat atmosphere! Wonderful place to spend a Saturday morning, and the biscuits are amazing!!
MoreIm so happy to have the Rootnote back! The new decor is much brighter, which takes some getting used to. Its beautiful, but I loved the darker ambiance of the original, so Im biased there. The same great coffees, teas, and beverage menus, but the food is cut wayyyyyyy back. Great vegetarian choices. Theyve done away with most of crepes except the Cremlin and the cinnamon sugar, which saddens me deeply. I have a bit of trouble finding something I enjoy as a pickier eater, but my daughter (a vegetarian with a broader palate than minealways finds something yummy.
MoreEverything that we ordered was absolutely delightful. The staff was super helpful and cheerful as well. We will be back for sure.
MoreThis is my Happy Place and I LOVE it here. I cried tears of happiness when they re opened. Your chai tea is the best thing Ever
MoreCozy and unpretentious. And great savory crepes; at least The Cremlin, for sure, is extremely tasty.
MoreThe Root Note has the best mochas I have ever had. <3 they have dinner crepes that are so yummy. The last time I was there I had fresh from the oven granola with steamed milk and raw sugar. It was so good.It is a creative environment and often has live music. <3Its a wonderful place.
MoreSuch a friendly amazing place to relax and have a cup of coffee. If your hungry you must try their crepes theres nowhere else that compares. Very friendly staff and all around a comfortable place to unwind I highly suggest checking out the root note. I usally grab a coffee by myself and always feel welcomed and greeted instantly by the very friendly staff. What an amazing coffee shop for is to enjoy in downtown lacrosse.
MoreFantastic hang! Whether having a meeting, listening to live music or just trying to get work done...this little cafe is a true local gem! And the food? Wonderful and just off-center enough to be unique! Oh...and the salads are made with clearly fresh ingredients. I love how intimate this place is and still tell my guests not to miss this gem! Thanks for being my office away from home!
MoreWe stopped in here for breakfast while staying downtown. The service was pretty good, but the food was just ok. The crepes had kind of a plastic-y texture, but the fillings were good. My wife said the black coffee of the day was pretty bitter, but I did enjoy my hot cocoa. Overall, it was ok, but probably would not return for breakfast (although it looked like a fun place to see some live music!).
MoreDelicicious crepes, the only reason for the 4 star review is the staff is often slow at wiping off tables, if they even come out to do that. But definitely worth a visit for a crepe.
MoreThe best crepes ever. Super healthy options and dessert options too. This was a great stopping point on our way from Chicago to MN. Short walk to river with neat artwork along the way.
MoreThe best coffee (Kickapoo), and the best crepes ever! The So Gouda is my all time favorite crepe (with extra sweet potatoes....especially if they’re purple). If I could I would eat here far more often than I do.
MoreGood music on Jazz nights. Great time to go with friends. The trivia night is always lively and fun. The drink selection is wide and delicious. Great food always. Great quick service in a fun quirky atmosphere. I always run into someone I know and it just feels like a second home for a lot of people in La Crosse.
MoreStopped here one morning for some breakfast and computer work during a two month road trip. This place seems to have it all, great food, atmosphere, and music! Unfortunately, we didnt get to see any music that day, but the crepes were great, and the place felt very homey and relaxing.Would definitely recommend you stop in and check out the root note! One of our favorite coffee shops we visited across the country.
MoreWe really enjoyed our crepe and the atmosphere, it is a neat unique place. However, we both agreed the cocktails were not good at all (were hoping they would be more like the amazing ones The Mint had, since same ownership). It looks like they know what they are doing with coffee, but not on the cocktails. We also had to pay a cover charge to get in even though the (so-somusic ended not long after we got our drinks and food. We didnt expect a cover charge in the first place, and wouldnt have paid if we knew when the music was ending. We miss The Mint and were hoping this would be a replacement in our local lineup ... but it just didnt do it for us, and it just didnt feel like it was a fit for us.
MoreReally fun, funky little place. They serve many varieties of tea, coffee, sodas and food. One occasion there was live music, it was a tad bit loud, but not overwhelming. The music was appropriate for the setting as well as the crowd. The price is what you would expect for a pseudo crunchy granola type coffee house (a bit more than McDs). That said, The Root Notes atmosphere wont make you want to heave your ingested chicken byproduct nuggets like at those "golden arches".Enjoy...
MoreIts cute and a very relaxed atmosphere. Service is friendly. Chai latte weak on spice. Maple latte pretty yummy. Crepes are average. Berry crepe with heavily sweetened frozen berries was a bit of a let down. Mushrooms in the savory crepe we had were well cooked and tasty. Good place to do a bit of work and enjoy a casual breakfast
MoreHip coffeeshop with light vegetarian fare, loud music, and lots of students. The menu is short, consisting of crêpes, soup, salad, granola, coffee, tea, beer, and cider. I love that it’s so local/organic/fair-trade focused. Haven’t been here for a show but hear the live music is great.
