The Red Monkey - Bar in San Juan, Puerto Rico
The Red Monkey in San Juan
Description
You have to try the empanadas (the mojitos arent too bad either...).
People need to visit this establishment more. It’s huge, cheap drinks and good menu. 4.5 rating and it deserves more and owner was super friendly.Keep this gem alive and please patronize here.
MoreAre they still in business or do I need a special knock on the locked doors? I stopped by at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, 8/3 and couldnt get in. Did one of you tell them not to let me in?
MoreLoved the place, friendly bartender.
So relaxed felt like home perfect place to enjoy great classic mojitos
Juan is the absolute best! Amazing food too some of the better Ive had actually
2 for 10 mojitos on the Wednesday when we went, great and friendly bartender, whos fluent in Spanish and english, and we played dominoes for 2 hours straight. Wonderful time.
MoreGreat little local spot w/ amazing food. I had the chicken pinchos & they were amazing & only $4 / a skewer. Burgers looked amazing also. Supposedly they have great chicken wings also. They only have ranch & BBQ sauce to dip the wings in so I didnt get the wings. If they had blue cheese dressing I would give 5 stars. Cheap drinks, closed on Mon & Tues
MoreCheap drinks and friendly staff
Visited here for the second year and I love this place. The mojitos are great, the service is super fast, and the empanadas are delicious, made fresh to order. Their chicken pinchos are so good too. Also I dont eat anything spicy but I tried their house made pique, (hot sauceAnd it was delicious. Love it!!!
MoreGreat little hole in the wall. The owner, Juan, is very personable and attentive. Lots of good bar food to enjoy in a relaxing atmosphere.
MoreNice place, Great Mojitos & wings !!!🤗😍
great drinks - is this the place where the drinks....yes it is
We were vacationing in PR with two teen daughters, got to Old San Juan around 7pm and by that time the restaurants recommended to us had long wait times. We walked around aimlessly searching for dinner and came upon Red monkey. At that point in the evening the menu was limited, we all had dry rubbed wings, fries, and delicious grilled chicken on a stick. Even the finicky kids were happy. Best wings and mojitos on the island!
MoreJuan behind the bar is a genuine host and will make you feel at home. This is a rare true ‘dive bar’ in that the drinks are cheap, the crowd is varied, the chairs and tables are worn… and aren’t those the best kinds of bars? Came for backgammon night on Wednesday (not sure if it’s every Wednesdayand it was pretty quiet but the soundtrack was great.
MoreBest Mojitos. Ever. Food is home made and awesome. Try their Empinadas (they call it something elseand home made hot sauce.
MoreGood price to have a beer
Empenadas are Fire!!! Make sure you ask for the house hot sauce
The owner was very nice. The food and drinks are outstanding.
Great cozy lounge/Bar, great music, awesome staff!
Drinks were good, but the service was a little lacking. We weren’t provided any menus or even directed to a QR code to scan like most of the other restaurants are doing in Old San Juan. I understand that it’s a bar, but they had plenty of “bar food” options to warrant a menu at least on the wall where it was easy to read. Overall, it was ok, but needs improvements to get 5 stars from me.
MoreOne of my favorite places in Puerto Rico!!! Pastelillos de pulpo, mojitos and birthday cake shotzzz, you wont be disappointed!!!
MoreGreat food, great drinks, fun experience!
Great ambiance and location. Seems like a great place to hang. Ill have to try the food next time.
MoreBest Mojitos Ive ever had. We had a blast in San Juan and visited The Red Monkey several times. Nothing but great things to say about this bar. Its delightful. The bartender was friendly and the ambiance was charming.
MoreMy favorite dive bar in San Juan! Food tastes good, drinks are very very reasonable. Owner is friendly and helpful. And they have Darts!! Literally the only bar in PR where you can find darts
MoreI highly recommend this place. The owner is very friendly and has friendly conversations with his customers. The drinks are amazing. And the food is out of this world!
MoreThe best burger I have ever had in Old San Juan. It was massive, with so much meat. It also included all the trimmings for only $5. A really amazing deal. I will be back.
MoreGreat people, food, drinks & prices for Old San Juan. We came over to use the restroom & we felt so comfy with the bartender and tried the octopus empanadas and after a little bit of bar hopping at night we came straight back here 2 days...Recommendations:1. El Pique! (made by one of the bartenders and it was so good I bought a bottle to take home...)2. Pastelillos (Aka empanadas)3. Mojitos
MoreCrypto-Mondays with Pedro!!! Bartender is a total doll! You will meet the best people, here.
MoreThis is hands down the best burger in Old San Juan! $5 for chicken or beef and $9 for salmon burger. They use different spices and the flavor is amazing. After being hooked on burgers, Íve finally tried their plates and am glad I found this. $7 for rice beans and a big juicy chicken breast. Team is super friendly.
MoreGreat owner ..great bartenders..Justin and cristoff rock.. Check it out you wont be disappointed.. The food really good too .
MoreNice casual spot with affordable good food. Joann the bartender is friendly and fun. Recommended.
MoreVery relaxed atmosphere, the barman/owner Juan is really friendly and makes you feel very welcome. A nice place to take a breather, get a few beers and some great homemade food from the kitchen in the back. All very good value also!
MoreQuite bar.I wish they had better TV. The picture quality sucks. Their shots worth 5 dollars and it was not worth it
MoreOverall pretty good. Cheap food and drinks. Taste was okay. Was a good spot to chill out for a few minutes out of the sun. I was there midday, I dont think its a happening time. They do souvenir tattoos, thats a first for me.
MoreBeen here a few times now and its always a pleasure. Awesome food, awesome drinks. Amazing service.
MoreA hole in the wall with amazing mojitos @ 2 for $10. Dont miss the eats either. The bar tender makes them fresh in the back.Nothing fancy, but thats not what this place is supposed to be. Just good food and great drinks at a hole in the wall where the locals filter through. A quick step off the main streets. Dont miss it.
Morethe service was awful, we had to ask them to turn on the air conditioning even though it was August so it was hot and humid. also, the food wasnt the greatest and I kid you not I waited about an hour for my meal seriously all the other people at my table were done eating by the time my food came out.
MoreCool place. Thank bartender was amazing and very nice! The layout is great. Ill be back for sure.
MoreGreat food and excellent staff....the bartender has you covered......the octopus and chiziro were amazing
MoreGreat find. A little off the beaten path on a Friday night when no cruise ships are in town. No where near as loud and crowded as the club atmosphere closer to Castillo San Felipe. Much less of a touristy atmosphere. Great food, great prices, great place.
MoreThe best bar. My favorite bar. The owner is awesome, the mojitos are amazing, the food is divine, and its family, pet, and smoker friendly. Everyone is welcome here.
MoreThis is my favorite place in Old San Juan. Juan, the owner, is great, food is fresh and delicious, and reasonably priced. This is on my must visit places in OSJ!
MoreWe stopped into the red monkey when visiting beautiful old San Juan. We literally and figuratively "stumbled" upon this fine establishment on our way back to port. We walked in and we were cheerfully greeted by the bartender, Juan. We ordered up 2 recommended mojitos, which were fantastic!! We sat at the bar and enjoyed our drinks and also the company. It was late on a Tuesday and food was scarce . Thankfully, Juan offered us amazing empanadas which saved our life! I couldnt have asked for a better ending to San Juan. If your looking for a tourist friendly spot add the red monkey to your list. Muchas gracias mi Puerto Rican hermano!!
MoreThis place is amazing!! Best pastelillos in old San Juan. Open until 2 for those of us traveling from California. Ridiculously cheap. Strong Mojitos. Owner helped us and was crazy appreciative. We went here more times than any other place during our stay. Highly recommended!!!
MoreWe came across this bar by pure chance, we were just looking for a place to get out of the rain after spending the day in Old San Juan. We were just gonna have a drink and wait for the rain to pass, boy we ended up staying almost 4 hrs there ..lol, You cant beat there house drink, Mojitos and the price 2 for $10. We also werent gonna eat , but we ordered a Cuban sandwich and we highly recommend it...The atmosphere and the staff is what made us stick around. The building is very historic and were fascinated by it...:)
MoreAbsolutely fantastic!! We hopped in here for a quick beer before heading to dinner up the street and ended up eating some Pastelillos which were amazing times 10. The owner was there and while he was hanging at the bar (a habit I dont mind at allhe was the one who made our food and informed us the the hot sauce they serve he makes himself, and boy was it fantastic I highly recommend getting chorizo, you just cannot go wrong!! It was very low key and relaxing!!
MoreVery cozy place for a quick drink!
This place has the best Pastellilos in Peurtorico!! The bartender is very nice and super hospitable. Definitely recommended if youre in Old San Juna
