Contemporary pub and restaurant with a British/Mediterranean menu and a lively enclosed beer garden.
I was very disappointed with the meal. The music was very loud considering that the majority of people in the pub were having dinner, it was so loud that you could barely hear the people sat at the same table. My main course was a masaman curry, with the option of beef filet for an extra £5. This was three small pieces of beef, cooked separately from the curry and put on top, not really what is understood to be a beef masaman curry. my desert was also disappointing. Three cheesecakes ‘spheres’, there was nothing resembling’”cookie crumb” or “honeycomb shards” as described on the menu, other than a stale shortbread biscuit on the side. The three different cheesecake flavours all tasted the same and the sauces were all mixed together on the plate.Service was slow, we were not asked at any time if we enjoyed our meal.Overall very disappointing
Had a Sunday lunch with friends, friendly staff and good atmosphere
Mediocre fillet steak, overcooked on one side and raw on the other. I wanted rare, not continuous variation. Service poor too. No offers of more drinks while we were eating even though wed run out.
Wedding reception meal for a friends marriage. Food and service was phenomenal. Thanks to the Chefs and our waitress Nell, she was amazing.
Attended today for my sisters wedding meal. Absolutely fantastic service by Nell. As someone who comes from the industry, you are a gem!! Accommodated to everyones needs and even managed to dodge the crazy children 🤣.
Phoebe served us and was lovely all evening, very helpful, checked in with us and helped make sure that a small error with our dessert order was remedied to our satisfaction. Music was a bit loud for a gastro pub though and inhibited conversation, seems like it’s trying to be a cocktail bar and superior pub dining experience at the same time… overall good experience though.
its been long time since Ive been to Red Lion (due to living in different cities)I see that they have completely revamped the pub and it looks much better. The staff was friendly, no problems, it was easy to find a space to sit & drink. The prices is a bit more expensive than regular pubs, but the location is good, just few meters from Coach Station & town market.
The date roast was good value for money. Not the best roast spuds ..chalky. veg tasted a bit raw.. Nice gravy .
Food was good and server Nelly great. But music too loud and general ambience a bit brash for me. Bouncers on door.
Half the menu wasnt on, the fish and chips were disgusting. Obvs the chips had been blanched a month ago and super dry and luke warm on the plate.Minted mushy peas, sure why not! Perhaps put some aquafresh on the side too.For a pub that offers so much promise on first impressions there is a definite lack of attention when it comes to the food.
Popped in for pre-theatre dinner and drink. Fishcakes delicious. Service quick and friendly. Ladies loo simply the best I have been in for years!!
Very nice pub, lovely interior and an outside area with lots of seating. Really lovely toilets, clean and roomy. We had 2 bowls of chips, which were very nice, went to the bar to get some more and were told that the chef had gone home and they didnt have any other staff to cook them. 🙁 It was my granddaughters 20th birthday but unfortunately the drinks were too expensive so we had to leave to go somewhere cheaper.
Good food. Better wine list than a lot of places in the area. A little posh.
A welcoming pub/restaurant with a great ambience and genuine staff. If youre looking for someplace to eat with an English town pub setting in a central location then look no further. Our waitress Nel was very attentive and provided 5* service. Would recommend 👌🏻🙂
Thank you Nell! Excellent food for a decent price, fast service and a lovely atmosphere. Even the toilets were lovely 😊
Poped in for lunch as we was passing by, I had the tbone steak my partner a pizza, the food was amazing, the steak was cooked to perfection. Lovely atmosphere, our waitress Nell was extremely helpful and attentive. Could not recommended enough.
We went for a family lunch and it was really delicious. Our server Nell was very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended!
I came for lunch today and the pizza was delicious. The atmosphere was lovely and so was pur server Nell, who I cannot thank enough for our impeccable service.
My son and I went for a special GCSE results dinner and it was really delicious last Sunday. Nell, was a great waitress and was so helpful so thanks!
Spacious pub with very classy decor even in the toilets! Nice atmosphere, good menu choices and the food was great quality. We had a very friendly efficient server. Unfortunately didnt get her name but she was polishing cutlery when we left! Would definitely return when visiting Oxford
Great food, sumptuous decor, and the best ladies toilets Ive ever seen. I kind of wanted to just hang out there all day! Nell was a fantastic server - friendly and happy to work with our large group.
Nell is amazing! She took great care of our insane group and did it with a smile. We were a tough crowd! :make sure you have Nell as your server!!!
Our dining experience was the best. The sea bass was excellent. Service from Nell was ‘top shelf’ I would recommend the Red Lion to anyone looking for a great dinner in Oxford.
We had a wonderful dinner at the Red Lion Inn! Our server, Nell, was outstanding. She couldn’t have been more attentive and she anticipated all of our needs. I would highly recommend the Red Lion Inn!
The food was incredible!! The mushy peas were amazing and the fish and chips and starters were great as well! Loved the order by phone and the toilet was incredible space as well. Food and the drinks were great but the customer service let them down. A lot of the staff really felt like they did not wanted to serve the customers and when we asked for water, we were asked to get it ourselves which was ok but it could have been said nicer. A lot of the tables were not cleaned so if this can be fixed it will be even better. The insides atmosphere is quite different to the garden outside so having some continuation will be even better. Incredible food thou!!
Really good Sunday roast. I had pork belly. Spot on. Recommend.
What a great evening here at the Red Lion- a hip spot with a diverse and tasty menu and fabulous service. I wish I had taken pictures of my food, but I inhaled it all too quickly- and Phoebe is fantastic. She was a delightful presence and offered superb service for us.
Good place for lunch. Accepts online reservation, although its so big you may not need one. Food was good, if a bit too salty, as most pub food is.Food arrived in 10 minutes, which is super quick by any standard. And finally, thank you Nell for the lovely service!
The food was excellently prepared by Joe (chefand served by Nell (the kindest and friendliest waitress). We chose 2 Dirty burgers as mains, which were one of the best burgers Ive had in the UK ( I try one in every town/city I visit): the meat was of good quality, perfectly grilled and soft to bite. The Caesar salad was also very tasty. Unfortunately, no pictures uploaded of the burgers, as they were consumed immediately :)As dessert, we selected the churros and the toffee pudding: both were very rich, flavourful and tasty and, especially the churros, were on a different level! The Red Lion is a definite "must visit" for food when in Oxford-I know I will !!!
Great atmosphere, large outdoor space, but food expensive for incredibly small portions and not tasty enough to make up for that. Friendly staff but not enough of them. Would in future only come back for drinks in the sun.
Great lunch with the family at the Red Lion. Scallops were delicious, the pork belly super tasty and the kids loved the fish and chips and burger. Our waiter, Nell, was fantastic! She made great suggestions and was extremely nice and helpful. Thanks Nell for making our lunch a great experience!
Had a great tome here. Food was quite good, especially the appetizers. The pork belly and scallops were ok, id stick to fish and chips or something more simple. Drinks were good, bar was clean and modern clean bathrooms upstairs which was nice. Skip the Billionaire fries hahaha, nothing special.
Excellent food and fantastic service. Neil our waitress and host was absolutely brilliant. Would highly recommend
I think that the outside seating and interior design for this establishment is some of the best in the area. My only improvement would be speed of service. I did have to wait 10 minutes to get served one round of drinks because there was only one person behind the bar at the time. I understand that the service industry is struggling nationally for lack of staff so completely understandable.I havent tried the food, but all the meals I observed did look very presentable so might have to give it a try one day. I still would recommend going here, especially to enjoy the garden.
One of the best Sunday Roast Ive ever had. Nell treated us very kindly. The place is beautiful inside. Definitely recommend you this place.
We had an amazing service for our first family roast. My mum flew in from Canada and Nell and Laura made it such a special experience. Thank you very much!
Nell was a brilliant waitress: friendly, efficient and a real laugh. Great food (I had the pork belly). Lovely decor and a fab atmosphere. Will return.
Fantastic meal today. Served by Nell who was welcoming and friendly. She was incredibly helpful as a member of the party had gluten and dairy intolerances. She made her feel at ease and gave all information she needed to choose her meal. Thank you for today, it was the perfect way to celebrate Father’s Day!
My favourite pub in Oxford. Great seating outside when the weather is great but also really nice inside. The food is good with the cod being huge. Near the market area so perfect location.
Nell was an outstanding server! As a group of 10+ we were definitely a lot but she handled it well. Great food and a great experience!
Nell is the greatest server. For a group of 14 folx, she was patient and helpful. We ordered drinks, entrees and dessert while eating in their upstairs private room. It was a wonderful intimate dining experience and we appreciate Nell for making it happen.
Me and my friend had our graduation dinner a week ago and we think Nell is wonderful!
Nice atmosphere, excellent location.Thank you !
Lovely pub, central Oxford. Has a good range of drinks to choose from, excellent service by Jordan. Havent eaten here but the meals look good. Comfy seats, nice outdoor area. Superb clean toilets. Would Recommended a visit and will definitely be coming back!
We had a wonderful experience this evening from being greeted at the door, the food was perfect to the most excellent service provided by Nell! She was one of the best servers we have had ever! Responsive, good follow up, very sweet. She’s a keeper!!
Very expensive for the quantity of food. I had the crispy duck bao bun and didnt even had a tablespoon of duck. Friends had the scallops and for nearly £12 only had three scallops that were tough. I had the seabass for main course and it only had two small new potatoes underneath the fish. Very disappointing and expensive for what it is!
Good atmosphere? Friendly service but food not worth the money asked for. Dry bread on starter that was very dry itself, cold and uninspiring. Tasty belly pork roast main with raw root vegetables and cold soggy Yorkshire pudding but a very tasty gravy. Cauliflower cheese extra was pink which I couldnt quite tell why!
After our last visit, I was expecting big things from the Red Lion’s Sunday lunch, and I was beyond disappointed. We ordered the trio of roasts which we had been looking at since the last time we went there and it wasn’t available. At first glance I thought wow this looks great… and then I took a bite. Unfortunately beyond not having the wow factor we had experienced last time, this food was barely edible. One of the Yorkshire puddings was burned and the other one tasted like barbecue. The roast potatoes were soggy and tasted oddly like cheese. The Dauphinois was practically raw and tasted powerfully of onions. Much of the meat was fatty, chewy, or unappealing. The only redeeming quality was the crackling and the veg, which were fine. The waitress kindly comped some of the food and gave us a free dessert, but nonetheless none of this food should have been served to customers in the first place. Avoid at all costs.
Food was absolutely beautiful, although pricey most definitely worth the money the service is amazing and they really take a attention to detail to the next level, greeted by friendly accommodating staff , the quality of everything they do is just stunning. Would definitely recommend.
It was great! Fantastic service... we booked a table for 18 and we all enjoyed the food and the facilities. They were very flexible with the booking. The food was delicious.
