Gastropub menu in heritage green-coloured pub with dark wood-panelled interior and two fireplaces.
Delicious veggie roast at the Palmerston. The squash was cooked perfectly and the beetroot quinoa was an excellent combination! Service brilliant too. Bit on the pricey side when compared with other SE London pubs but worth it.
Probably my favourite pub in the area. Great Sunday roast and regular menu always has something lovely to offer.
Really good Sunday Roast, just note its lamb and not lamb shank 😊
My new regular place. Ive found it hard to find nice pubs close to me with a relaxed and cozy vibe where they dont blast music but this one really fits the bill. The food here is smashing (I had some pork belly for the first time in my life and it was greatand have a good selection of drinks and most importantly, their staff really know their stuff and mix drinks really well. Kaileigh, Luca, and Charlie in particular are very courteous, knowledgeable, and accommodating. A really well-run pub and if those lot are about I know Im in good hands. See you next time!
Lovely old pub, good food, friendly helpful staff.
Incredible service for a large group having Sunday roasts - chilled but attentive at the same time. Generous portions of hot roasts, meat was tasty and plenty of gravy. Desserts great too. 😋
Pretty pub. Vegan roast (stuffed squashwas nice, although the three we ordered came with no gravy (had to ask then took a while to arrive). Also the vegan roast is the same as the vegetarian roast but without the Yorkshire — wouldve hoped to have more potatoes or something to make up for it. Staff nice but seemed a bit stressed/stretched.
The cod dish is out of this world. I usually stay for dinner and to listen to the beautiful collection of 70s music they play on Mondays. Awesome place!!!
Overpriced and poncey with rude staff who had the cheek to ask us to leave to free up a table after paying over 20 quid for a bloody roast!
Ive been here many times in the past ten years, but only this evening have I been made to feel welcome. Charlotte is an asset because she is cheerful and more importantly my drinks were poured perfectly. This is important!
a hugh big thank you for letting us hire your room for my dad wake 10/08/2022 the food was amazing i been told thank you daniel and paul for helping us at a very sad time highly recommended
Great drinks. Intuitive, prompt and friendly service. Lovely food and great decor and ambience.
An awesome local pub great menu , on tap selection and super chill friendly vibe Paul will take great care of you there!
Decent East Dulwich pub on Lordship Lane. Only one cask beer - and one cider - on handpump when I last visited. We shared a couple of tasty dishes at lunchtime - salt and pepper squid and a large fishcake. Friendly staff.
My chicken roast today was very mediocre, the potatoes where cold and soggy like they’d been heated in a microwave. Very over priced for the quality of food we received.
This was originally a complaint. The manager responded quickly. I dont want any action - a blameless post mortem will suffice. I look forward to visiting again. I believe it was a one-off and in giving a two star experience a fresh go to see if was a five, having a bad day. BTW, there is no reply button, hence edit review becomes the feedback mechanism.
Great food for reasonable prices. Good atmosphere and very friendly and cheerful staff. One of my favourites.
Excellent service really organised, yummy Sunday lunch and a very good portion. Didnt have to wait long. I cant wait to return. Thank you.
Visited the Palmerston on Saturday it was very busy but the service was exceptional. There was a great selection of drinks and cocktails, and an amazing vibe. Will be back soon!
We got there at 8:45 and the waitress asked us to wait at the table. . When they came to get our order was 9:05 and they told us that the kitchen was closed (for 5 minutes)… they usually serve good food but I won’t be coming back for a while.
Irrelevant from anything else, we visited on Sunday afternoon. Ordered two pints at the bar and paid for at the bar. Price seemed a bit expensive. So I asked to check if it was correct. They checked and say it was correct. Later while back at table check price list, indeed was than it should have been. Looks like the staff added a 12.5% service charge to my bill despite me ordering at the bar. Normally Id put this down to an accident which Id understand, but given I questioned the price and they never mentioned it had service charge, I think is was malpractice hence the 1 star.
Had a bad experience here on Saturday evening. We were told it was table service but no one came to take our order. We were also given two different wrong menus so after 3 trips back and forth to the bar we finally had a cocktail menu with prices. Ordered espresso martinis and a beer (at the bar as no one came to take our order despite all the staff standing around). The espresso martinis were watery and disappointing. Wouldn’t recommend for the price.
Pretty good food in a friendly pub setting. We went on a Sunday and the roasts were pretty good, the veg were excellent, and they were generous with the meat. Sauces were in sachets, which I personally found slightly annoying.
1st time at The Palmerston at is was a great experience. We originally booked for 1.30pm but as we have a new born it would have been difficult to make this time. I emailed go ask if we could move our booking an hour and received a response in 10mins from Dan to confirm it was fine which was really nice of him. When we arrived we was given a table with plenty of space for the pram and for us to be comfortable. The food and drinks menu was great and the options for the roast were perfect! My wife got the beef and I got the pork and we were more than happy with our decisions when the plates arrived. Our servers were all great and made us feel at home. Thank you all for a great lunch and we will definitely be returning!
Slightly disappointed. Servers were friendly, interesting menu but we waited ages for our food. The table next to us arrived 30 minutes later but were served at least 15 minutes before. The staff were very apologetic for the delay but when the food finally arrived one portion of chips was cold. Could be so much better. Next time well get some street food from the market outside.
The best pub roast Ive had, maybe ever!! Its a shame in some ways because its a bit in and out with little time to relax outside of the meal before the table is needed... But its the only flaw in an otherwise perfect visit
Really disappointed. Starter looked dreadful and tasted horrible. Greasy crocquettes with an odd sauce. Roast meat was dry and chewy. Vegan roast was just about ok. Salmon was served with gravy!!!!! Didn’t stay for pudding as it had been an awful meal.
Service staff great - nice atmosphere for a drink - food leaves a lot to be desired. An uncooked lump of salmon delayed one of our meals by 30 mins, followed by a second cooked lump of salmon that tasted awful - a bit like cod liver oil.
Delicious roast pork, amazingly friendly staff and general good vibe. Drinks on the pricier side but overall would definitely recommend.
Great service but had a terrible vegan roast. My main was a lump of beetroot wrapped in pastry. No protein and no taste. Vegans have tastebuds. Lets stop trying to make vegan food look like meat and instead focus on taste and nutritional balance of the food.
We have had Sunday lunch here before but unfortunately on this occasion the food and service werent great. We had the beef and on all three meals the meat was chewy and the potatoes under cooked. No one even came to check if everything was okay. We waited but in the end I had to go down stairs to get someone. They brought the bill up and didnt even question why there was so much food left on our plates. Not the usual fantastic standard we are used to from The Palmerston!
Great Sunday Lunch with family in this lively and popular local pub. Service was fun, relaxed and friendly, Henry, our server gave his recommendations and they were spot on, loved the croquettes for a starter. The main roasts were excellent, portions were generous and the meat was succulent and tasty. Good value for money, worth booking to guarantee a table.
Came here for a Sunday roast last weekend and whilst the service was very friendly, it was pretty shambolic, made bearable only by the friendliness. Waited a long time for the menu, drinks, desserts, but the roast came out quickly. Roast was ok, although some of the parsnips were undercooked and too hard to eat, and no exciting sides on offer. Lamb and yorkies were good though.
Been here a few times for food and its always great and the staff are super friendly and the service is perfect! only annoying thing is there always seems to be a few things not on the menu or they have run out...!!! the steak is great but never seems to be on the menu - one good positive the head chef actually came out to apologise - so thanks! But would definitely recommend - Please just get more steaks in......
Food was excellent, the staff very friendly and warm. Definitely come again
We had Sunday lunch here yesterday -DREADFUL!! Whilst the food was edible the prices are a rip off for the quality and overall what you get! I called the day before as I couldn’t see a children’s menu - I was reassured that ANYTHING on the menu is half price for children. Our son is FOUR YEARS OLD … we ordered him chicken and instead of veg he had chips … then ice cream and a juice. So EVERYWHERE children usually have desert and drink included … NOT HERE!! £14 for his chicken dish; £4 ice cream plus £2.80 juice … so that’s £20 for a child under 5 years old! REALLY … when I challenged the waitress she said ‘yeah, we’ve just put our prices up! From what??? There isn’t a price for the child’s ‘menu’ … I asked to speak to the manager who hid and sent her back with a new bill - chicken now £9, but ice cream still £4 and drink still added on! We’ve been all over the country with our son … even Gordon Ramsey doesn’t charge those prices!!! The main staff are polite enough but no one really knows what is happening. The manager hides every time there is an issue … there were a few!! This place is a total dump and I would NEVER recommend it … the music is so loud, it’s like being in a night club and the door was left wide open so it was freezing … we could not wait to leave!! If I had more time, I would’ve refused to pay for the ice cream … but this place is just full of greed - we needed to go!
Had a lovely lunch with a friend. The food menus was excellent for what I was expecting from a pub like venue. Our food was excellent and so was the service. I would definitely recommend.
Lovely pub with smart food. Staff is so friendly and kind. Ice pops for dogs are a fantastic addition to the menu (Rosie loved it).
The Palmerston serves excellent food, nothing fancy or exquisite but always good ingredients cooked freshly just how you’d expect. Not too mention they have a Sunday roast for everyone (even the vegans!at good value for money. Service is exceptional - friendly, attentive and efficient.
A lovely meal out! Food was impeccable - the mussels tasted very fresh with a lovely sauce to match, and the steaks that two people in our group ordered were cooked exactly as requested. Staff were very accommodating and friendly, including a wonderfully witty waiter who attended to our table for most of the evening. Will definitely be returning soon.
First time visiting this pub and it was OK. Our visit was very mixed, firstly we saw a lot of empty tables outdoors which did not say they were reserved and thought they were available. I went inside the pub trying to order a drink and was told that they were only accepting bookings and that all the empty tables were reserved - no one turned up for 20-30 mins at these tables and seemed like the management of the pub did not want our business. At the last minute, they offered us a table for an hour and that was enough. We ordered some small plates and sides - the venison croquettes and plate of chips. The chips tasted good but didnt feel as if they were made at the pub and like the other comments suggest I do think the food was overpriced. The croquettes were nice but again it was £8 for two big croquettes and Id be expecting that price in West End or at a Michelin star establishment.
I absolutely love The Palmerston in East Dulwich. Im a local and this is my go to place and where I take all friends and family. There is an indoor and outdoor area. The food is great as is the price. Best of all the staff are so welcoming and make you feel like a part of a family. The Palmerston is a wonderful pub. I thoroughly recommend it.
Popped in for lunch after a walk in Dulwich Park and was delighted. Their sunday roast is a really generous portion and delicious, they have a good selection of beers, friendly staff, and a really warm atmosphere. Will definitely come again when in Dulwich!
First time visiting since it was taken over by new management. Pleased to report it still has the best Sunday roast in East Dulwich. We were sat in the the private dining room upstairs which was quieter than the bar.Service was great; our waitress was really attentive and regularly came upstairs to see if we needed anything.
So how to do this review ... Well. Its definitely very good food BUT its overpriced for location. £25 for a main is central London prices and the location doesnt support that . Toilets are poor and the vibe of hipster/distressed chic isnt what food needs. Choose if its meant to be Michelin or gastro. In-between at moment, so I understand why its at risk of closing. Overall Id go somewhere else bit thats just me. Give it a try and see. Oh and my father in-law cut his finger on a chair due to it having been broken.
This is a gastropub with the mission of providing an informal "fine dining" experience in a pub environment. So, the quality of food served at this establishment is of a higher standard than one normally finds on Lordship Lane. The prices reflect their mission. While the food is great - the service could be more attentive. We have eaten here several times and the food is always spot on. The lamb with white truffles is exceptional.
Lovely Sunday roasts and food. The liver with caper butter was exceptional. I would recommend this place to anyone who is able to eat food- 99% of people I guess. Some of the staff seem a little away with the fairies 🧚♂️. Like one barman who said he didn’t know what the roasts came with- despite them being the main thing on the menu. Odd but funny
This gastropub serves really good food and has a good selection of beers, wines and cocktails on offer. All served in a relaxed, cosy atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area!
Reasonably formal gastropub with restaurant quality food and a large wine list. Had the weekday lunch special for £15.50 - beautiful fish croquettes and a light but unremarkable chilli pasta. My wife had nice (but quite rareonglet steak, and very good pear tart. With a pint and a glass of wine, and obligatory tip, the bill came to £51 which we thought was very reasonable
Lovely atmosphere, and great roast! you get loads of veg and roasties all cooked to perfection- not pictured in my photo unfortunately. I like the upstairs where you have a separate space for your party, apparently can fit 30 people and is bookable for a minimum spend. The staff are friendly and were always around if we needed more drinks or anything. Been here for our friends birthday for the past three years now. Highly recommend.
