Oudekerksplein 23, 1012 GX Amsterdam, Netherlands, Amsterdam
13th-century church, now Calvinist, hosting religious & cultural activities including concerts.
Climb the tower! Adrian (forgive spelling my mangave an incredible, feisty, and informative tour. One of my favorite parts of Amsterdam tour.
Beautiful church building in the centre of Amsterdam, taking up a huge footprint in De Wallen just to the south of the central station. The tower of the church can be see from all around the area and is worth heading over to even for just a look around the outside perimeter of the building.
Church with a very interesting history. There is audio tour available in Dutch and English with lots of interesting information.
You can climb the tower. The guides know the history very well.Definitely worth a visit.
The walk on burials, literally.Once you step inside youll be astounded by its height to the roof, truly astounding. The stone floor is not less interesting as its literal burials.A relaxing and calming museum. Good to get away from the commotion for a while.Have a good one.
12€ for almost nothing, inside u cant really see anything because there is not a lot to see, definitely overpriced, also the giant light globe thing makes zero sense. All in all very confusing for a church.
Surprisingly a lot of empty space and minimal decorations. Saskia - the 1st wife of Rembrandt is buried here. There are very interesting carvings on chairs depicting allegories.
A good area, yet paying to visit a church i dont like!
Meditative place away from the hassle and buzzle of the city. Listen to beautiful organ music and look at the art.
Do not expect the normal majestic architecture of a church or cathedral. Had the entrance fee not been €12 then the rating would have been higher. The current art installation wasnt to my taste but then each to their own I suppose.
This church has an outstandingly old and tall tower with breathtaking views. One can visit it on a group tour.
A truly awe-inspiring church with a great exhibition by Obá; would definitely recommend a visit just to see which artist youll end up seeing as they change overtime (free audioguides are available in both english and dutch).
Although I didnt enter, it looks amazing.
In the middle of the center of Amsterdam a majestic and the most old church of the city. Recommended to visit, especially due to the low time required to do it. Roof and very major of the interior are sill made with original wood
The Old Church is currently under renovation. I chose to climb the tower with a guide and some fellow tourists. It was quite informative to learn a bit history of the church and its bell tower, our guide Lukas was quite knowledgeable. You could have a bird’s views of the entire city of Amsterdam from the 34-m platform. The entire city was built in a swamp, so not many high rise or high buildings in and near the city. It was well worth the guided tour! Cheers!
A very beautiful churh that you need to visit when you are in Amsterdam a very good example of this architecture
Wonderful old church!
Oldest building in Amsterdam checked off my list. Was amazing just walking on so much history. The bells is a special experience for sure. Beautiful
Had a nice tour up the tower with a friendly guide!Perfect view over Amsterdam as this was a former watch tower to overview the city
Beautiful old church, but Im afraid there isnt a whole lot to see. Once youve stepped inside, youve seen pretty much everything there is to see. They had (a temporaryexhibit that was interesting, but also very limited. Not necessarily a must-see attraction, but might be worth it if youre nearby.
Beautiful old church, huge! Quite empty inside, it is about temp exposition and the building itself.
The tenth Open Tower Day in Amsterdam took place on Saturday 26 March2022 March 26
Worth a visit! I came on the Amsterdam City Card!
Very interesting church interior and they occasionally have art installations within. I wish that I had realized the interior tour and tower tour are completely separate! If I did it all over again I might skip this part and just do the tower, although by the time I was there, they were sold out for the tower climb due to limited capacity.
I recommend taking a tour up the Old Church Tower! The views are breathtaking, the tour guides are very well educated, amazing piece of history!
We were doubting wether to enter or not, but so pleased we did. It is a calming location, with free audio guide (tickets are 14euros..). There was a art expo which was mind intriguing. You should visit!
Ok church and interesting for its history but not much to currently see inside. Could be improved in their permanent exhibit.
Beautiful quaint cafe in an old church with cute views of the street. Has both Indoor and outdoor seating options
Beautiful church with a vast historical background. The stained glass windows are beautiful! There isn’t too much to do inside, so I would suggest visiting when there is an exhibition going on, to have more to see.
Its a beautiful old church. I loved the wood maded ceiling. Solid and not ostentatious. Free to visit by Amsterdam City Card.
Lovely place under some construction- 2,500 or so buried here
This was great! A must see if you love history/art/architecture and are in Amsterdam. I also did the tower which was a great experience. The church itself has markings of family crests all over the floors and some curious artwork inside.
Impressive church. Entrance fee seems a bit steep as there is not much to do inside
Very interesting and historical church. The accepellas singing really set the mood for a very somber and reflective time. Dont rush. Take time to sit, look around at the details of the architecture and listen.
Great. Always nice to visit this beautiful monument. It’s in a vibrant area of town, and shines in special light night and day — the Red Light District is just meters away, so for any tourists visiting beware of a lot of people of a younger crowd strolling the area.
Such a beautiful architecture ! and interesting cultural events (witnessed Susan Philipszs "The Fall" ... OMG Goosebumps !!!)
Beautiful Gothic architecture of The Oude Church impresses. The ceiling of the Oude Kerk is the largest medieval wooden vault in Europe.More than 700 years of history, just imagine how much these walls have seen and heard! Rembrandt himself and his family were parishioners of this Church! Awe seized us with the first sounds of the Magnificent Beautiful Organ. That was an incredible experience !
Visit just before closing time, interesting history and beautiful place.
Interesting, but not worth 12€ in my opinion. I have went in because I had a Museumkaart. If I had to pick 3-5 places to visit in Amsterdam, not sure de Oude Kerk would be one of them.Still, it is a beautiful place, especially the staines glass windows.
Amazing experience about history. Ones you must visit.
What happened to us is unbelievable and outrageous at this church. Nowhere was said that an exhibition was in progress inside. We simply wanted to visit and see the interior of the church. We used the Ansterdam city card. The unpleasant woman at the entrance told us that because of the exhibition, the price of the visit was more expensive and made us pay 5e more each...What she forgot to mention even though we let her know we wanted to see the inside, is that the exhibition was in almost absolute darkness, some poems being told in the background... So no way to see anything... Very disappointed.Extremely poor communication.
We supposed to have free entrance with the Amsterdam City card but were charged extra €3pp because there was a "very expensive exhibition". The exhibition, which was some kinda darkness themed display with candles making only a dim light, made it impossible to see anything of the inside of the church.. Its not only that we had to pay extra for the entrance but we didnt even see what we came here for.. Absolutely disappointed. They should have told us that this exhibition makes it impossible to enjoy the churchs interior.
Visiting in early November 2019 and the church is currenly a noisy, dusty building site. We were told at reception there was an exhibition being installed and some building work going on, so it may be noisy, but large areas of the interior are roped off, windows covered and there were building materials eveywhere. I understand the renovations need to take place, but even at the discounted rate of 7 euros per person, it was too much to pay for what essentially a building site.
Great old church. Not a practicing church now. Lots of relics, cool staircases, awesome stained glass, a giant pip organ too. Well worth checking out, and spending an hour at least there
The oldest church in Amsterdam. They now use it as a museum, although the amount of offerings and information available is minimum. Possibly the most interesting thing they have to offer is Rembrandts letter for the intent to marry, and learning that the floor is a graveyard with thousands of early Amsterdam citizens buried below the stones. It is an interesting visit, but again, the amount of history and things to listen to on the guided audio tour is not particularly expansive.
This is the 2nd time Ive visited this place and its worth every cent of the admission. Would love to have gone up that spiral staircase.
This is a really beautiful old church. Its kind of sad that it isnt used anymore as a church. I found it fascinating that there seems to be burial chambers under the entire floor. And a copy of Rembrandts and Saskias marriage record on display.
If someone tells you theres not much to see, theyre an idiot. The organ is magnificent and the floor is all tombstones of the dead. The church still has its original stain glass windows and its possibly the oldest church in the netherlands. Right next to the red light district! Lol get your sin on. English translations are available through the hearing devices inside.
This is the oldest church in town, as its name indicates and its truly beautiful. In the interior there was a rather spooky but quite interesting art installation as a kind of remembrance of the thousands of people buried in the Oude Kerk (one of them being Rembrandts wife).
As other people have alluded to in the reviews, the inside is absolutely not worth the entrance fee however the church is still a landmark in the downtown area and worth a visit to admire the old and beautiful architecture. Its located near the red light district which means its centrally located to casually stop by and check out the exterior for free.
