The Great Mosque in Damascus stands upon the site of a Christian church, which had replaced the temple of Jupiter, which was almost certainly the successor to the temple of Rimmon in which Naaman had to worship.(Alan R. Millard)

The Ummayad Mosque is the biggest architectural work of Umayyads, which is the first Islamic dynasty, in Damascus. It is one of the largest mosques in the world and the most important work of Umayyads. Besides, it is one of the rare works that were not damaged in the Syrian civil war. The Ummayyad Mosque is at the end of the so-called old bazaar of the capital Damascus. It is forbidden to enter the courtyard of the mosque with shoes.

The details of the buildings are amazing and the must ask for assistance in the tour to understand the real history. This place can be over crowded and safety measures for corona are not taking place well.

A beautiful building steeped in history. I have been here several times over the years. It has been partly renovated internally however not as sympathetically to its true style however I am grateful that the people in charge of this have attempted to do this albeit not in keeping with its original features to some extent. It has been a temple then a church then a mosque. It is the site of burial of John the Baptists head (Hazrat Yahya ASIt is also significant for shia muslims as the site where prophet Muhammads peace be upon him holy household were brought as prisoners after 72 men and children of his grandson Imam Hussain AS were martyred on the plains of Karbala/Ninevah by the ruler of the time Yazid he tried to suppress their message but it lives on for history to judge him for what he was.

One of the oldest war machine for breaking the doors of the castles and strong one is placed there. This place is most important for Muslims because the head of Hazrat Imam Hussain is burried over here. The place where Hazrat Imam Zain Ul abideen did the last Sajda (bowing the head to Allahdid over here, and this is the place where the Jesus will seen to the world. Must visit once.

One of the oldest & largest mosques in the world, located in the Old City of Damascus. Inside the mosque is a Shrine of John The Baptist (Prophet Yahya among Muslims). It is widely believed that his head was buried there (see attached pic). Adjacent to the mosques wall is the tomb of Sultan Salah Aldin Al-Ayoubi, the greatest Muslim fighter (i.e., the same Salahuddin portrayed in the movie "Kingdom of Heaven" starring Orlando Bloom)We were toured by the Mosques Administrator himself, as we were a group of visiting Diplomats. Per the Administrator, the site of Umayyad Mosque had been a place of worship by the pagans since the Iron Age.When the Romans conquered Damascus in 64 BCE, it was converted into as the Temple of Jupiter. Then later on converted by the Christians into a Cathedral, dedicated to John The Baptist, in the 4th century. Later on again, converted into a Mosque when the Muslim Arabs conquered Damascus in 734 AD... (i verified the facts on wikipedia & its the same story).A visit to this mosque is truly amazing. However, i highly recommend for tourists to visit this place on LATER date.

Resting place of the head of John the Baptist, nearby and wandering around the place ( some years agoin reverence I came across some learned English gentleman - astoundingly propped up against a stone column (inside the mosque near the artefacton his arse with BARE feet, to my knowledge this is a HUGE "no no" in Islamic culture. Jarringly to the eye was the fact the soles of his feet (pushed apart to the worldwere caked black with dirt, the Syrians were moving past this spectacle taking it with good grace. What must they think ??One day Syria will rightfully be a major tourist destination.

This is such a different, beautiful mosque with a long history - a mix of Persian and Ottoman detailing, so quite different from the blue ceramic tiling you see in other mosques. The courtyard and minaret are breathtaking. The inside is very spacious as well and can accommodate lots of visitors and prayers. Females are given brown cloaks to wear.

Note that if you are not an arab, they willMake you buy a ticket. The guy got confused with me and threw me out of there because I was not an arab—surely. But I spoke in Arabic with him and he realized that I did not have to buy a ticket. My impression is that every time I go to a mosque, there is this sense of ownership from some of the workers that makes them feel empowered to scold you around and yell at you. Do not let that happen.I got in and then a woman was scolding me because I was sitting in the middle (when there were another 100 women sitting in the middle too). The mosque is huge and beautiful and there is the tomb of some important person that everyone wants to visit.

A very old mosque with a interesting long history. The original building was a temple few thousand years before christianity came. The it was revamped and made into a church. Once islands arrived they converted it into a mosque. You can still see the original surface of the temple that once stood. The mosaic paintings still decorate parts of the walls. Very peaceful and serene environment once you enter its great courtyard.

The Umayyad Mosque, also known as the Great Mosque of Damascus located in the old city of Damascus, is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the world. Muslims believe that Isa (upon him be peacedid not die on the cross but Allah (ﷻraised him to heaven and he will return one day to defeat the Dajjal (Anti-Christ). According to a Hadith, he is on the second heaven. The Prophet (ﷺmentioned, “During the Me’raj (Ascension), I met Isa (upon him be peaceon the second heaven. I found him of medium stature, reddish white. His body was so clean and clear, that it appeared as though he had just performed ghusal (ablution, cleansing of the entire bodyand come.”

After the Muslim conquest of Damascus in 634, the mosque was built on the site of a Christian basilica dedicated to John the Baptist (Hazrat Yahya Alaihissalam), honored as a prophet by Christians and Muslims. A legend dating to the 6th century holds that the building contains the head of John the Baptist.[citation needed] The mosque is also believed by Muslims to be the place where Jesus (Hazrat Isa alaihissalamwill return at the End of Days. The mausoleum containing the tomb of Saladin Ayyubi Rahimullah stands in a small garden adjoining the north wall of the mosque.

The site is attested for as a place of worship since the Iron Age. Damascus was the capital of the Aramaean state Aram-Damascus and a large temple dedicated to the cult of Hadad-Ramman, the god of thunderstorms and rain, was erected at the site of the present-day Umayyad Mosque. One stone remains from the Aramaean temple, dated to the rule of King Hazael, and is currently on display in the National Museum of Damascus. The Temple of Hadad-Ramman continued to serve a central role in the city, and when the Romans conquered Damascus in 64 BCE they assimilated Hadad with their own god of thunder, Jupiter Thus, they engaged in a project to reconfigure and expand the temple under the direction of Damascus-born architect Apollodorus, who created and executed the new design.
