The Old Treasury Building in Saint Albans
Description
Inside was a beautiful old buildingOutside left a bit to be desired. That I can get passed as building being renovated. But what I think could be done is a far more professional approach to their process! It definitely needs some polish!!
MoreThe facade is currently under restoration but you can still visit on regular opening hours. I loved reading the history of Melbourne and seeing accompanying old historic photos and illustrations. The massive replica nugget on display is a nice bonus too.
MoreWell earth to look at exhibitions arr of good and interesting topics , and it is free .
MoreFantastic museum in the old treasury Building. Quite a lot of history on the tour. It’s free to go see the museum.
MoreNot open on a saturday.-the museum.dont waste your time
A collection of Melbourne’s old history and some temporary exhibitions. Can go there after a walk in nearby parks.
MoreBeautiful experience today at theOld Treasury Building. Friendly staff members who were very friendly and explained about the "Gold Rush" history before entry.Definitely worth visiting: they have 2 floors open at the moment. Interesting history, specifically about the "Gold Rush".Free entrance as well :)
MoreBeautiful building showcasing Melbournes history. Museum and building are worthy of a morning or afternoon visit.
MoreA great museum, and think its exhibition varies in time. Building was well maintained and the overall heritage buildings and parks around here were greatly preserved.
MoreA great place to get some instresing history of Melbourne in the 1885 time period
MoreThis place is amazing! Quite apart from the beautiful old building designed by a 19 year old, the museum blew me away. It is underrated and a hidden gem. We found it by accident during Open House Melbourne and was astonished by the depth and detail in the history that was display. I highly recommend every Victorian/Australian visit this place. There was so much information with photos, original documents (the executioner’s book!), news articles and personal stories. The people who put this together should be commended, they have done a fantastic job - it is up-to-date within the last few years. It is not publicised very well and the map location pin is not accurate for the entrance, but it’s a must see! I want to go back.
MoreInformative exhibition on the history of Victoria well set out and free
BEAUTIFUL OLD BUILDING ADJACENT TO PARLIAMENT HOUSEMelbourne is blessed with colonial era buildings. This is great example. Once the state treasury building it now serves as a museum space.Located at the top end of town on Spring Street.
MoreFantastic step back in time.
Great museum for anyone looking to learn more about the history of Melbourne. Some exhibits are a little text heavy, but overall an interesting experience with a cool ground floor
MoreReally enjoyed this museum. Despite the name, most of the museum isn’t about the treasury itself but rather a history of Melbourne as a city. It took us about 2 hours in total to go round (reading everything). The current short opening hours are slightly annoying - including closing for lunch - which meant we had to return the next day to finish off.
MoreOld Treasury Building on Spring Street, East Melbourne, VictoriaOld Treasury Building is regarded as one of the finest public buildings in Australia.
MoreWe had our wedding here and it was an amazing experience. But the poor service from an old flabby dark-skinned rude lady officer ruined (wish I know you namethe perfect situation. Do us a favor, stop volunteering there and go home.
MoreOld Treasury Building is a beautiful 19th century building which was used to store all the gold from the gold rush era of Melbourne. Today you can learn about Melbourne’s history in the museum housed in this building with some exhibitions as well. Located next to the Treasury Gardens it is worth checking out if you are in Melbourne city.
MoreHavent been to this museum in some time. So many wonderful new exhibitions.Staff very friendly. Efficient entry and exit following all COVID restrictions.Love Museums Victoria. Were lucky to have such amazing museum.
MoreLots of interesting Melbourne history to read about while exploring the vaults.
I had an amazing experience here at the Old Treasury Building. The staff was friendly and the visit pleasant. Coming here was a great idea, I had the chance to learn more about the history of the city through illustrative panels and historical artifacts. I recommend to visit the place, and it’s 100% free!!
MoreA beautiful building, well maintained and reflecting Melbournes gold rush boom-time. Some great permanent and temporary exhibits sharing stories of Melbournes growth and the gold rush. Check out the vaults while being entertained and educated. Great for kids too.
MoreLittle but informative museum in the city, easily accessible by tram or take free ride on the city circle. Paid car park around the block. Ground level is mainly Melbourne’s history and main attraction is basement which includes gold vaults. Good for kids and best part is FREE ENTRY.
MoreA really nice museum to look at the history of Melbourne. It has free entry with a donation. There are people at the entrance to greet you and see if you want a map and also gave a general idea of the museum layout. There are two levels with the first level about the History of the City and the lower level about the Golden history. The lower level was the housing for the caretakers and the old gold depository. There is actually quite a bit to see inside, particularly if you like reading about history. There was also a room full of beautiful paintings.I wasnt expecting much when I came but left quite happy with what I learned there.
MoreFree entry. The building is just down the road from St Patricks Cathedral, so its a good idea to visit both consecutively. This history museum is a standout for its very helpful and friendly staff who will greet you warmly and give you a brief introduction of the exhibits. The permanent exhibitions provides good insights into the history and growth of Melbourne. Dont miss the exhibit of a huge gold nugget (replicafound during the gold rush.
MoreFree Museum, nice environment, nice staff(they will explain you a little bit of the history of this building), super nice of them. There are some instagramable spot too, they clean this place so well, and the information is so complete. They even have a big TV screen to show you some videos of this buildings history. Super nice, neat and clean.
MoreI got married here to my beautiful wife. It was everything we needed for our special day and managed to get our family and friends into the room to help see our ceremony. The stairs out front provided photo opportunities as did the side area with the garden. Ill forever recommend this place to anyone waiting to take the next step in their life.
MoreReally appreciated the beautiful old building. Its been appropriately modernised. Highly recommended.
MoreLovely old decor. You can feel the old fashioned quality of the place
An interesting chunk of Melbournes history can be found here. Easily overlooked, but what a cool nostalgic building.
MoreWhat a treasure. Beautiful old building displaying fantastic history of Melbourne. Amazing to learn the huge role the Gold rush played and the influence to Victoria. Also to see the photos of yesteryear and the forward planning of the city.Important history. Free entry, make it a must see.
MoreNice place to visit if u have time to kill
Wonderful place for a large scale strike and rally would definitely recommend to others for similar purposes
MoreI enjoyed finding out about the huge population increase of optimists and desparados when gold was discovered in Victoria, the tough sparse life on the goldfields, the strategic journey the Chinese took to reach the miners. Many of the older buildings in Melbourne grew out of this wealth and the Old Treasury Building built to secure the fortunes still seems sturdy and fit for the purpose. We spent more than an hour looking at the two exhibitions and learning about Melbournes past.
MoreWas a nice place to visit for a quick, self tour~ The replica of the famous gold nugget was pretty impressive🤩
MoreGreat place to visit. Loads of info about early Melbourne with very knowledgeable guides who give overview of what to see bringing history to life. The building itself is magnificent with a history of its own. So glad we ventured in....also its free, donations are always better to give when your met with an option to keep buildings like this alive.
MoreIts an imposing building with an interesting expo about gold rush and history of Melbourne. Also free entry.
MoreFantastic historic building about the history of Melbourne, its importance of settlement around the Yarra River and the Gold Rush.
MoreIts great that the feel of the rooms still holds the classic early 1900s feel. The rooms are all different. You can have a small and intimate wedding ceremony or choose a larger room and have more guests.
MoreHistory lesson of the day. Heaps of old photographs of Melbourne City and stories. Friendly staff and clean environment.
MoreThis is a good quick stop if you’re done with the parliament beside this building. There’s a few things to learn here and a nice basement to quickly have a look at. If you have an extra half an hour, this is certainly a nice place to pass by. Not to mention that there is a garden beside here as well.
MoreLocated at downtown Melbourne, on a free tram route. So getting there is not an issue and you also have a free entry. One can get to see the history of gold keeping, treasury and stuff. Near by to the Parliament of Victoria and St. Puals Cathedral.
MoreDefinitely a city icon, great architecture. Easy to get to . Just get off at parliament station .So much history in this building. Highly recommended spot for all tourists to stop by and enjoy. There is also spot to.do.around in this area just walk down collins.
MoreI love historical buildings and this one is pretty good and have a cool old gold vault underground. It’s free when we go in to visit. Staff also really friendly and helpful.
MoreThis amazing piece of Melbourne history, designed as a strong hold for riches dug up during the gold rush is a must see! Still in use as a Government building, everyone is welcome to come inside and see the historic static displays on the ground floor. Read the exploits of Bush Rangers - see the armour worn by Dan Kelly, Neds younger brother and death mask of Mad Dan Morgan.
MoreLovely place to take a walk in the evening..
A fascinating old museum. Free entry. Can visit the old treasury vaults underneath, and the old building keepers house.
MoreGreat museum, especially considering that its free. Helpful personnel greet you at the entrance and give you a quick explanation of the museum. There are 3 parts: the bushrangers, the foundation and history of Melbourne, and the basement vaults. A visit will take you anywhere between 30 min and 2h depending on how interested you are. There is a lot to read if youre interested!
MoreThis free museum is an excellent visit! Youll learn about the gold trade (tell your kids its about where the gold came after Sovereign Hill), and other interesting history displays. Awesome panorama of Melbourne then and now. The caretakers apartment is on display too. Eight children raised in that tiny spot. And theres a display of Real Gold. Im sure it was real. Anyway, check the opening days, theyre a bit eccentric.
