Inside was a beautiful old buildingOutside left a bit to be desired. That I can get passed as building being renovated. But what I think could be done is a far more professional approach to their process! It definitely needs some polish!!

The facade is currently under restoration but you can still visit on regular opening hours. I loved reading the history of Melbourne and seeing accompanying old historic photos and illustrations. The massive replica nugget on display is a nice bonus too.

A great museum, and think its exhibition varies in time. Building was well maintained and the overall heritage buildings and parks around here were greatly preserved.

This place is amazing! Quite apart from the beautiful old building designed by a 19 year old, the museum blew me away. It is underrated and a hidden gem. We found it by accident during Open House Melbourne and was astonished by the depth and detail in the history that was display. I highly recommend every Victorian/Australian visit this place. There was so much information with photos, original documents (the executioner’s book!), news articles and personal stories. The people who put this together should be commended, they have done a fantastic job - it is up-to-date within the last few years. It is not publicised very well and the map location pin is not accurate for the entrance, but it’s a must see! I want to go back.

Really enjoyed this museum. Despite the name, most of the museum isn’t about the treasury itself but rather a history of Melbourne as a city. It took us about 2 hours in total to go round (reading everything). The current short opening hours are slightly annoying - including closing for lunch - which meant we had to return the next day to finish off.

We had our wedding here and it was an amazing experience. But the poor service from an old flabby dark-skinned rude lady officer ruined (wish I know you namethe perfect situation. Do us a favor, stop volunteering there and go home.

Old Treasury Building is a beautiful 19th century building which was used to store all the gold from the gold rush era of Melbourne. Today you can learn about Melbourne’s history in the museum housed in this building with some exhibitions as well. Located next to the Treasury Gardens it is worth checking out if you are in Melbourne city.

Little but informative museum in the city, easily accessible by tram or take free ride on the city circle. Paid car park around the block. Ground level is mainly Melbourne’s history and main attraction is basement which includes gold vaults. Good for kids and best part is FREE ENTRY.

A really nice museum to look at the history of Melbourne. It has free entry with a donation. There are people at the entrance to greet you and see if you want a map and also gave a general idea of the museum layout. There are two levels with the first level about the History of the City and the lower level about the Golden history. The lower level was the housing for the caretakers and the old gold depository. There is actually quite a bit to see inside, particularly if you like reading about history. There was also a room full of beautiful paintings.I wasnt expecting much when I came but left quite happy with what I learned there.

Free entry. The building is just down the road from St Patricks Cathedral, so its a good idea to visit both consecutively. This history museum is a standout for its very helpful and friendly staff who will greet you warmly and give you a brief introduction of the exhibits. The permanent exhibitions provides good insights into the history and growth of Melbourne. Dont miss the exhibit of a huge gold nugget (replicafound during the gold rush.

I got married here to my beautiful wife. It was everything we needed for our special day and managed to get our family and friends into the room to help see our ceremony. The stairs out front provided photo opportunities as did the side area with the garden. Ill forever recommend this place to anyone waiting to take the next step in their life.

I enjoyed finding out about the huge population increase of optimists and desparados when gold was discovered in Victoria, the tough sparse life on the goldfields, the strategic journey the Chinese took to reach the miners. Many of the older buildings in Melbourne grew out of this wealth and the Old Treasury Building built to secure the fortunes still seems sturdy and fit for the purpose. We spent more than an hour looking at the two exhibitions and learning about Melbournes past.

Great place to visit. Loads of info about early Melbourne with very knowledgeable guides who give overview of what to see bringing history to life. The building itself is magnificent with a history of its own. So glad we ventured in....also its free, donations are always better to give when your met with an option to keep buildings like this alive.

This is a good quick stop if you’re done with the parliament beside this building. There’s a few things to learn here and a nice basement to quickly have a look at. If you have an extra half an hour, this is certainly a nice place to pass by. Not to mention that there is a garden beside here as well.

This amazing piece of Melbourne history, designed as a strong hold for riches dug up during the gold rush is a must see! Still in use as a Government building, everyone is welcome to come inside and see the historic static displays on the ground floor. Read the exploits of Bush Rangers - see the armour worn by Dan Kelly, Neds younger brother and death mask of Mad Dan Morgan.

Great museum, especially considering that its free. Helpful personnel greet you at the entrance and give you a quick explanation of the museum. There are 3 parts: the bushrangers, the foundation and history of Melbourne, and the basement vaults. A visit will take you anywhere between 30 min and 2h depending on how interested you are. There is a lot to read if youre interested!

This free museum is an excellent visit! Youll learn about the gold trade (tell your kids its about where the gold came after Sovereign Hill), and other interesting history displays. Awesome panorama of Melbourne then and now. The caretakers apartment is on display too. Eight children raised in that tiny spot. And theres a display of Real Gold. Im sure it was real. Anyway, check the opening days, theyre a bit eccentric.
