2 The Folly, Hertford SG14 1QD, Azul
Simple pub with a compact menu, wooden bar, stained glass and comfy leather armchairs.
We were moored on the Lea outside the Barge, because it was raining we stayed aboard. Promising ourselves, we will be back .Edit. When reviewing I do try to give a true assessment whether positive or negative, but Google can be insistent when asking for reviews, so this was my response . I thought the pub looked inviting which prompted me to remark "we will be back" not at all negative.
Friendly & pleasant staff.Good food.Regularly changing real ales & ciders on hand pump, selection of keg beers & ciders plus bottled/canned beer. Plus a selection of bottled/canned craft beers.Has regular events including quizzes .My favourite pub in Hertford also my local.
The food here was just simply incredible. The chips were cooked to perfection and it filled my mouth with creamy deliciousness. The tartare sauce was delicious and filled my mouth with joyous flavours. Now moving on to the cod I mean what can just simply incredible I loved it so much and it were well worth the price will definitely come back
The pub itself is OK, nice location on the river but majority of the garden is at the back and tatty, with picnic tables crammed in.The pub has recently changed their menu, but it is now far too expensive for the pub. If I am going to pay these prices for food and would want a much better experience than a regular pub.
I have worked in Hertford for over 30 years and the Barge has been a staple pub to the wonderful town of Hertford. My last visit was appalling. We paid over £10 for 2 small bottles of beer served in a plastic cup!!! Never again, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice…
Staff very friendly and remembered my order when I came back to get more drinks. I had the Sunday roast which I really enjoyed, Yorkshire puddings amazing, but the beef roast was far too fatty for my liking, but would return again!
My old watering hole when I lived in Hertford. Very quiet for a Friday but thats not a bad thing.
Nice little pub and good food menu. If you have accessibility issues parking is perhaps an issue being a short walk away.
Lovely setting, food very good.... only issue was no chicken option for the roast dinner, just red meat. One of our party had to have a burger.
Have come back multiple times because we’ve just been so impressed. What a pleasant surprise for excellent food in a pub hidden away by the river.Vegan options have always been delish and there’s always plenty of choice with a comfortable price- great value for money. My personal favourite is the grilled peach salad, the portion is fantastic, presentation immaculate and taste sublime.Another honourable mention is the cauliflower starter dish. Fantastically cooked cauliflower with a sticky sweet crispy coating- absolutely fantastic.I think the only thing I can fault the food on is the flatbread that accompanies some dishes: it has always been too hard and slightly stale tasting, if that improves in any way, I literally wouldn’t be able to find faults.Service has always been prompt and staff members are lovely, the interior and exterior seating is fab for all weather. I highly recommend.
Nice staff, super quick service on the food order. Had a camembert starter to share (can recommend the parsnip to dipand cod and chips for main (loved it). Vegetarian options available and also looks like dietary needs can be catered for.
Popped into the barge for a lunchtime beer and snack away from the crowds in town. Lovely situation by the river despite the building site opposite where Waitrose used to be.Nice friendly staff and good food & drinks. Service was quick too.Good spot to get away from the crowds but good for people watching if youre into that too.
Very comfortable local in Hertford. Set along the River Lea. Popular, and can be busy at peak times. Good ales and enough to choose from, plenty of outside tables. Very clean and tidy, nice people, good service. Will go back.
Having just completed a bike ride from Enfield lock to Hertford a well earned pint was due !!! Nice looking pub right beside the canal with an old world setting inside !! Spacious beer garden outside ideal in sunny conditions. Selected a pint of Stowford Press cider that was excellent. The pub also does food but I cannot comment on that as I did not eat !! Will definitely revisit !! 👍
Just had lunch and OMG the truffle and mushroom risotto to die for! AND GLUTEN FREE BANANA FRITTERS for dessert! Stunning lunch thankyou chef!! 💖 My husband loved your tuna steak with Mediterranean salad too ! Beautiful tomatoes! X
Weve been here a few times now and its still not disappointed us. The food is great and its got that proper pub feeling that you look for when you walk in, the tap selection good but personally for us if they had Gunness and Campden hells on tap it would be perfect
My partner and I visited the Old Barge today and was very disappointed in the food. We both had the fish and chips which we found to taste quite bland. The batter tasted of oil and the chips as if they had been cooked in the same reconstituted oil that had been used over and over. The last time we visited the pub was probably before the lockdown and we had a really enjoyable roast meal. However it has put us off going back again
Great food especially the chicken skewer! lovely pleasant staff..and great outdoors seating area
Classic pub, we had fish&chips and it was really good. Nice&cozy place
Paid for a simple bangers and mash meal and it came out cold. When I asked them to reheat the chef said it was hot and refused.Would not recommend based on the service and attitude of the staff.
Three Thirsty FarmersThree Thirsty Farmers a field they did farrow. And farrowing that field the three thursty Farmers they found there a threepence a piece in the furrow they farrowedTo buy them three pints of the best cider around, of Three Thursty Farmers to cool them selves down.Lovely cider lovely day great pub and dog friendly too
What a lovely pub! The staff are so friendly and the food was yummy too. Thanks for a lovely afternoon and very happy to have found this little gem 🍻
Outdoor seating area to the rear of the pub, great if you like sitting under a large umbrella and your not taller than 5"13.
Great pub in the centre of Hertford yet calm by the canal. Great ambiance, good beer and good food
OK- Tuesday lunchtime meal at bar. Barge burger was fine - need skin removing from fish for fish and chips. Beer good. Short of staff.
Popped in Monday lunch time for a drink and a bite to eat. The food was lovely. My wife had cod and chips, the batter looked nice and crisp, which it was, I had the crab linguine. For dessert it was chocolate brownie and eton mess. Good vfm. Service was excellent. Definitely pop back when we are in the area again.
We went for a drink last weekend I ordered 1 large glass of house red 1 Gordons gin and Fevertree tonic cost £18.45! After politely querieng why it was so expensive the bar person took £4.00 off, which is still expensive for a Gordons gin and a house red. Not recommended.
Lovely pub, with a nice range of ciders. Food looks great too, will definitely come back to dine sometime.
Nice place on the river, nice food, went at a quiet time so the service was relatively quick. Bar staff seemed a bit distracted at times but were friendly. The seating behind the tent is a bit scruffy and closed in. Had to climb over tables to get up. But everywhere else is pretty.
Foods good if you can get any, we went on a busy summer day and they had to close the kitchen due to excess volume of orders :(The queue for the bar is long, but there is plenty of seating and its dog friendly!
Food was Fantastic, Truffles and mushroom risotto was cooked perfectly. Steamed vegetables lovely and tender.Young girl that served me was polite and helpful.Thoroughly enjoyed my lunch there today .
Really welcoming, really cozy and really good service. Friday evening meal was hearty and made with care. Just right. A lovely way to end the week.
A nice old pub next to the river, with a good range of beers and some decent food (inc. some good vegetarian and vegan options), serve in a dedicated dining area. Staff were very friendly.
Found by chance, during a bike ride as a shelter from a spring storm. Excellent british cuisine and excellent ales on tap. Very welcoming and very nice and helpful waitresses. Average price. If I go back there, I will definitely come back.
Came to have a bite to eat over the bank holiday weekend with my partner, to be told by the bar staff that the kitchen was closed for an unknown amount of time because the chef was too stressed out. I am completely understanding that people work hard and need a break & the staff were really polite about it but to close the kitchen in the middle of lunch service is just ridiculous.
Really nice pub in a great location next to the river. Also doing a duck race over the Easter weekend, with very high standard of duck decoration being shown.
Have to add another review for the Old Barge. Simon & Sally run a great pub and have a first-class team. I love that when you go there its always familiar faces that greet you with a warm welcome. The food just gets better and better. We visited Sunday 27/3 (Mothers Dayand had a delicious Sunday lunch, that we could not faulty. Our 6 y/o son was delighted with his chicken and chips lunch too. Lovely drinks, lovely food, lovely setting. Why go anywhere else!?!
I really like this pub, I have nice memories spending time here with my mum.I came here for lunch today and it was really nice. There is a good selection of vegan items. I had the gnocchi, my partner, the Moving Mountains burger. The gnocchi was a little too oily for me, but that could be down to personal preference, and it didnt stop me from finishing it!I did feel that the mains could have been a little cheaper, and I didnt like that the gnocchi was two prices, but I was charged the higher amount.I would however still return. The staff were lovely and there is a nice selection of beer.
One of the best pubs in Hertford. Great location on the canal, ideal stop off for walkers and cyclists heading to Ware or coming through to Hertford. Beer garden is great with loads of space and heaters for the winter months. Food is great and beer selection is really good. Its nice that it changes time to time and love that they have 61 Deep on tap! Highly recommend for at least a drink or 2.
Lovely catch up with an old work mate, over a Great couple of pints of 3 Brewers Copper 👍🏻🍻
Absolutely A-MA-ZING beef cheeks! Excellent service, the location is perfect by the river! You should definitely try it out! They bring lollipops at the end as well!
Delicious, hearty, good quality food and friendly service. Good beer selection too, including few international beers.. Very nicely surprisedExtra charm added by river views and authentic interior
Nice little stop-off after making the 360 turn at the end of the navigation. Mooring (lucky!in front of the door.
First time Ive been here after being recommended several times. Ive got a few allergies and the server was very observant. The roast dinner is absolutely mouth watering. I had the beef and it was so tender. I like a lot of gravy, so I asked for more and I got a small jug. Fab food, service and atmosphere. All adhering to covid measures.
Awesome Burger! Food was great the service was quick and the pub is in a nice location. Park in the car parks near by because there is next to no parking next to the pub. Awesome!
Tucked away on a historic island in the middle of Hertford, this pub has low slung ceilings and an old world vibe in the bar area, but with a bright and airy dining space at the back. The food was great with a wide variety of pub grub, and the guest ales were interesting and varied.
Excellent venue, superbly located riverside. Huge range of ales, good range of wines, bottled beers and gins. Food is superb, very good value for money, very well cooked, generously portioned. Will be returning.
Very pleasant meal a little pricey. Brilliant pub to just grab a beer and sitting by the window and watching the world go by very slowly.
A lovely and cosy place. Prices a bit higher than the normal pubs. Next to a river, has a little bit of outside space with benches in the front. As much as i could explore, it looks quite small, not very many people fit inside.
A mixed experience. The Old Barge was well reviewed and we saw on their website that they did Sunday roasts, so we dropped by to experience it. Firstly I should say the staff were friendly and attentive, and the best part of the experience, but the food itself could have been better. We both had a slow-cooked beef roast dinner. My beef - rather than being tender (my assumption from being slow-cooked), was quite tough. In fact some of it was inedible because it was dry and even blackened at the corners. I imagine it had been at the surface of the slow cooker and thus caught, so I had to leave bits of the meat, which was not a promising start. The veg that came alongside was similarly mediocre - the swede was completely underdone and almost difficult to chew. The other veg was generally acceptable and mostly boiled to the point of tastelessness. The highlights were the roast potatoes however, which were great. The Yorkshire pudding was also to a good standard. For dessert we had a fruit crumble with custard (greatand the Baileys bread and butter pudding (even greater), which saved the meal in our opinion.Other than that, the choice of beers was good and our selections were of good quality. Overall Id recommend a visit but avoid the Sunday roast like the plague.
