The small town atmosphere alone is worth the visit. No airs here. Good not gourmet food, which is good. Reminds me of restaurants from years ago...Will return.

This place was simply amazing. Not only is the history fascinating, but the staff and owner were incredibly gracious. The owner gave us a tour of the place and even gifted our handicapped daughter a present to make her smile (she has cerebral palsy). We drove all the way from Virginia just to eat here, and we are so thankful we did. The food was superb and the atmosphere was just as we hoped. Wonderful experience from beginning to end! Make sure to read the history of this place before you go—it’s remarkable.

An unexpected automatic 20% tip and 4% credit card charge for a party of two was not cool and left a bitter taste on what was a pleasant experience. They must not want returning customers with that BS, and it was apparent with such a small crowd on a Friday night. The history was great, the food was good, but the business is sus.

Very historical place to visit and have dinner. George Washington came here several times around 1775. Alexander Hamilton lived upstairs above the restaurant for two years.Food was pretty good, but rather expensive ($250.00 for four people). Not happy they charged me an extra 4% on my total bill for using my credit card instead of paying with cash. Then, expect you to consider your tip on all of that combined.Servers were pleasant and had plenty of knowledge of the history. Service was on the slow side. After dinner they invite you to pose for pictures with authentic muskets and wear costume hats from the 1770s era.

I cannot even begin to write a review that does this place justice. We traveled all the way from Tennessee to dine here and it did not disappoint! It was an absolutely beautiful building in the most adorable town. The staff was amazing from start to finish. They allowed us to dine for 3 hours just taking in the environment and we did not want to leave. The food was cooked to perfection, the live music perfectly set the mood and our waitress (unfortunately I do not remember her name but she had the most beautiful Columbian accentwas precious. Seeing her interact with my wife and telling stories of her own experiences in this great place was perfect. Finally the owner Mr. Norden was phenomenal. He ran nonstop the entire time we were there but still somehow found the time to lead us around going out of his way to show his appreciation for how far we had traveled. Myself and everyone else owes him such a debt of gratitude for how he has preserved this historical place while others in our country would have left it behind. Thank you for everything you do sir and we cannot wait to visit you again. From TennesseeClayton and Mandy

There is so much history here that at times the stories seem fictitious. But this is a tavern which competes for the title of oldest in the nation, and it can only be assumed that a lot of history happened here. We met the owner who regaled us with tales of George Washington, Benedict Arnold, Alexander Hamilton, and of course Major John Andre, the most famous spy of the Revolution who spent his final days here prior to his execution. I bought a few rounds of the Tavernkeepers 76 Porter, made from the same recipe given to George Washington during his stays. The food was rather expensive ($25.00 for a burger and fries), but otherwise it was an enjoyable visit to this historical tavern.

Although dinner was good, I tripped on the step down and landed on my already sprained ankle while walking out from the main dining room and towards the exit. The restaurant is extremely dark in that area and to my recollection, there was no sign that said “watch your step”. Nevertheless, this additional injury has unfortunately exacerbated the pain of my previously sprained ankle. I highly suggest the establishment making this area more visible and potentially put up a sign so other people don’t trip or fall.

Very cool place with a great history. Small menu and a bit pricey but the food was very good. We ordered the Fish and chips and the Grilled Flatbread...both worth it. The town also has lots of history and worth exploring if you have time. Service was great and friendly!

My family and I visited the most historic restaurant/ tavern in NYS. If you love food, History and Architecture this is the place to come. The place where Washington, Hamilton and many others used as a place to relax, be entertained and plan the greatest country in the world. Bring your entire family, and enjoy as the founding Fathers did. Don’t forget your camera and who knows with so much history and years you might catch the ghost that dwells in the restaurant; book your reservation for Halloween in advance. An excellent place to spent evenings and travel back in time with their cooking, music and much more.

We absolutely Love The Old 76 House! The fact that its a Historical Landmark is what originally piqued our interest. Once inside, the old beams in the ceiling and the decor made us even happier. The ambience of the fireplaces are amazing, especially on those cold wintry days when weve wandered in to enjoy a fantastic bowl of French Onion Soup. The food is always hot & delicious and you can tell its homemade not frozen and microwaved. They have Colonial recipes they use and it just keeps you tied in to the Old World style. The Pot Roast, Shrimp Scampi and Chicken Cordon Bleu (my pictureare among our top favorite dishes. For dessert we love the Crème Brûlée, The Apple Cobbler & The Bread Pudding. (À la mode is a Must!!The staff is always very Friendly and accommodating, and we Love Robb the Owner. What a Great, Personable Host hes been, always sharing details and facts about his Beautiful Restaurant. I have suggested this Restaurant to all of my Friends & Family, and we drive about an hour and a half just to enjoy ourselves (and a great mealyear round. Theres plenty of parking and lots of great food & drinks. Bring your appetite, your Family & Friends and your Camera to capture some new great memories!

Me and my friend went to a book signing with Tim Kennedy a few blocks away and we were feeling very proud to be Americans afterwards. Somehow this spot came to mind because I had heard of it a few years ago and Im so glad we decided to stop in. It feels super authentic.... Because it is. The building is older than our country is and it has been visited by many of our founding fathers and significant events have even taken place here. Supposedly George Washington loved the beer here so much that he brought the recipe to his family farm in order to make more. When we were there we enjoyed the awesome, tasteful live music. My burger was definitely delicious and all the employees were very helpful and welcoming. After the meal we walked around the place and soaked in all of the really cool pieces of History hanging from the walls. It looks like the front part of the building is the oldest and some of the back parts like the kitchen have been added over the years. They have beautiful fireplaces, But there were no fires going while we were there. It looks like there was some outdoor seating on the one side and there were plenty of tables so we didnt have to wait at all. It was a little more expensive than your average place but it was worth it. It was also a little more fancy than I expected And I will definitely be going back for a date night at some point, But it was still a good spot to go with my bro.Historians seem to agree that it is the oldest restaurant in the state of New York, But there is some debate about whether it truly is the oldest in the country. No matter how you slice it the building is super old, but there is some debate around whether the restaurant was originally located a few houses down before moving to its current location around the time of the revolution. You can do some googling and come up with your own conclusions, but either way you should go to this place for dinner because its great!

The venue is special and filled with so much history. We had brunch there a few weeks ago and it was a little disappointing. Our server was aloof and uncaring. The food arrived cold but the setting was pleasant and enjoyable. The trio that was playing did a nice job.

I met a friend coming from further north who drove over an hour to get to this place and it was pretty unimpressive. We thought my son would like it because hes a big history buff. It more like any other local tavern. The food was decent the server was very nice but the food took a long time and she just wasnt a good waitress. Its definitely not somewhere I would go back or recommend anybody driving more than 10 minutes to go to.

Five star experience from beginning to end. The escargot was well prepared and very tasty. The short rib ravioli app was just as good. Plenty of flavor. The sea scallops were soft with a great buttery flavor. The tavern burger was delicious! Cooked perfectly with awesome flavor. The Home made bread pudding was outrageous! What a great dessert. The crème brûlée was equally as good. Well made cocktails however the $18.75 charged for a Bulliet rye Manhattan was a little over the top. Sterling service provided by our very professional and attentive server Joe Bux B. He was kind enough to explain the history of The 76 House. What a treasured past . Great atmosphere and easy parking makes this one of my new favorites.

Came here for Mothers Day. The crab cake was good. Both the salad and the endive plate were unremarkable. The filet mignon was decent, though I asked for medium and parts of it were rare. I did not like the bread pudding. It was too thick, not wet enough, and had quite a few raisins. The chocolate ganache was better.

My boyfriend and I came here Friday, February 12th, two days before Valentine’s Day! It was our first time, and we had the absolute best time! I am a history major, and my boyfriend LOVES American history as well, so we really enjoyed the atmosphere. We definitely had the best seat in the house next to the fire! We got the NYS strip which was cooked to a perfect Medium Rare and I got the Lamb that literally fell off the bone! Everything was amazing and there service was as well fantastic! We will be back!

The Mary Taylor Band was playing live, with a packed house, and delicious food not quite to the level of Gastro Pub, but well above the sticky, salty fare usually found in neighbourhood pubs. A lovely, boisterous crowd, mostly between the ages of 40 - 60, enjoyed the music, as I ate Butternut Squash Ravioli, slightly undercooked (but otherwise prepared "al dente" style), and dabbled in French Onion Soup. The soup was both late in arriving, and salty to the point it burned my mouth. After adding an entire glass full of water during the course of consumption (never did that before), it was watery, but drinkable. The bread and butter was served warm, and added a nice touch, but our bartender Terry was new - her 2nd day - and not properly trained on the menu, and had a difficult time multi-tasking. We had to ask her 4 times for water without ice, before we actually received it, and she had to turn to other servers to answer our food questions. Despite this, the sheer history of the Old 76 House (its where Major Andre was jailed, and executed during the revolutionary war, and where George Washington frequented), along with the usually fine food, make this restaurant, and pub a keeper. I recommend.

Really quaint, historic place to visit. We had brunch which we all really enjoyed. Very good selection of foods, not just breakfast. Salmon done perfectly. Omlete station was great. The only thing I would have liked would be a hot tray of eggs already made instead of having to go through the station. There are no eggs just ready to serve yourself, but hardly a reason not to go. Food was really good. But just know, if its cold outside they do not put heat on until they open. We had 11am reservation and it was freezing for about 20 min.

Wanted to come here as it is a pretty historic place! The atmosphere was very fitting. It’s unbelievable how we were in rooms from the 1600’s and 1700’sThere is live music there all of the time which is a sweet add on.We went with the Yankee Pot Roast, Amish Chicken, and Steak. Each were very good and left everyone pleased with their order. The desserts were great as well. I highly recommend the Austrian Tort. As well as their homemade sherbet. It’s a good place for a night out and I would highly recommend it!

We had a fantastic lunch at the Old 76 House in Tapan. The atmosphere is wonderful! It is inviting As soon as you pull into the Parking lot of the restaurant/Tavern. The old building is kept nice along with the grounds decorated with autumn mums and miniature Pumpkins. Inside is decorated with historical paintings, clothing, muskets, furniture ect. I read about the Old 76 online about it being Haunted. Table 2 was the table we made reservations for. Thought we would visit a historical tavern with a twist. We arrived at 12 noon Saturday. 1 table was sat and we were the only others in the entire restaurant. We ended up taking the table next to table 2 as it had large comfortable side chairs lol. It was like sitting in your living room relaxed. We faced table two So we can see if any ghostly shinanigans would happen lol. We started off with drinks I ordered the Peach Madra my husband Ordered the 76 House hard cider. Both were fantastic. The winner of the two was the Peach Madra. Superior flavor when it comes to any Peach drink i have ever had. It is very refreshing and strong at the same time. I orderd two throughout my lunch and was tipsy by the end of the second. I ordered the Onion soup and husband ordered the Stuffed clams for apps. Both were flavorful. My husband and I both agreed best Onion soup we have ever had. For my main entree I ordered the Meatloaf with mashed potatos. My meal also came with crisp FRESH mixed veggies. Lightly seasoned. The meal was fantastic and stuck to traditional recipe. With brown gravy. My Husband ordered the Big 76 burger and loved it. Especially the carmalized onions and the thick cut bacon. The roll was fresh and soft. We were full and could not finish our plates. Wish we had room for desert. Will def order that the next time we travel down. Our waitress was very nice. She stopped by our table often to see if we needed anything as did the waiters to top off water and clear plates. The ambiance is a 10 when it comes to comfort and historical decor. I took plenty of pics. We drove an hour to The Old 76 House to have lunch and it was worth it. We plan on another lunch visit with my parents and children so they can experience this Historical tavern as well.We did experience something strange on our way out. Stories say that table #2 is haunted. Guests have encountered strange cold spots. Revolutionary era coins found on or around the table. Along with strange noises and apparitions. Even heard money falling from the ceiling and being stuck to the bottom of ones shoe. When we left our table on the floor next to table #2 was a super shiney Dime and penny. I picked it up and placed it on table 2. Little excited i showed my husband and we made our way out of the restaurant. I went out to my car and right in front of my car door on the ground. I picked up a super shiney 1 cent euro. Coincidence? Ghostly experience?? Hmmmm?? Was someone ghostly sending me home with a small parting gift? 😉 Definitely worth the travel and will be making Our way back down in the next few weeks and this winter in hopes they do light up those fireplaces. Go check it out yourself. Ask for table 2 or table 1 right next to it. 😎👻

The Old 76 House is a fun old tavern with historical decor and nice spaces for small and large groups. There is a bar and space for a band in front, and several seating areas. The scallops and vegetables were good as was the service. The bread pudding was ok but would try a new dessert next time.
