Multi-building complex with an extensive range of Thai artifacts, historical dioramas & artwork.
The National Gallery in Lat Yao
Description
Privilege
Its temporarily closed due to renovation
Only a wing open but it has beautiful art. I will visit again.
Dont recommend for 200 baht
One adult ticket costs 200 baht.It is currently under remodeling.6, 7, 8, on display only in the exhibition hall.Considering the exhibition situation, the ticket price is expensive.
MoreColourful, vibrant, contemporary. Not as traditional as i expected.
Very nice modern art
If you can go on one of the free days, maybe its worth 30min if you are in the area. But 200THB for foreigners is certainly not worth the fee. No parking.
MoreIt doesnt worth the price (200 baht per ticket). You can see all the expositions in 15-20 minutes and few of them touched me.
MoreThis is a complete waste of money and a very disappointing experience. You pay the same price (200Bhtto visit this "so called" National Gallery, as the National Museum. Dont bother, visit the superb National Museum instead. At the National Gallery only a few of the rooms are open and yet they still charge 200 Bht. Even if all the rooms were open, it probably wouldnt get more than 3 stars. I say again, dont waste your money on this place visit the 5 star National museum instead. Youre not even allowed to take photos here. Its very rare I give a 1 star for a place, but this deserves it.
MoreMost photos here are from National Museum, Not from this place(National Gallerypeople who upload them are just confused. Small collections of art. under-maintained gallery. Not worth the admissions fee especially if youre a foreigner(multiple time more expensive than local people).
MoreDon’t waste your time. Really disappointing. Many of the photos with this listing are actually of the National Museum, which is nearby, and really terrific. Go there instead.
MoreNot very much to see but it’s free. i would recommend if you are into thai royal history in a beginner level. You can see some of the paintings by the King which are adorable. When you look at paintings of the Kings, they leave more impressions on your mind than just numbers like Rama VI.
MoreImportant heritage building with a wide ranging survey collection of art from Thialand including several works by the multitalented former King. Special exhibitions from time to time
MoreWas hoping to see more works from before 1950s, but overall nice selection of art. I took my time going through it and it took about 1 hour.
MoreMy timing was bad as well as my website information source that stated 30 bht as the entrance fee. I arrived and had to pay the tourist price of 200. Definetly over priced for access to less than a third of the exhibits. Though, there are well done sculptures and then paintings by the former king. Hall displaying primarily portraits of the former kings father is terribly overrated. Hard to appreciate the administrations investment in some of the artists displayed in that hall. Attending the free BCAC, esecially when it showcases its annual competitions, is far more worthy of the time and effort to get there.
MoreNot very exciting. Some nice landscapes. 25 quid to see Van Gogh work. Could nt be bothered. There are enough painting in the place to see free of charge. If I wanted to pay to see the paintings of a mentally ill man I would buy my uncle a painting set and some colouring books for Christmas.
MoreShort and sweet narrative of Bangkok fine arts.
Almost empty, rest is almost entirely art of princess which is not as good to give it like 4 rooms. No other artist would get this recognition if it weren’t a princesses
MoreGood to explore Thailand history, but the ticket is so expensive 200thb
Interesting place of you live in Bangkok and happen to be around khao San road. I wouldn’t recommend to go there on purpose if no exhibition is in place but sometimes they have some modern art events, then worth visiting
MoreA beautiful setting for a museum and a large collection of artifacts from all over Asia. The highlight was the royal carriages they are a wonderful representation Thailands craftsmanship and beautifully decorated objects.
MoreDecent exhibits, but scope for huge improvement given Thailand’s rich art & culture.Staff are friendly & helpful.
More1. Poor quality work 2. Many pieces are replicas 3. Over priced 4. Half of the paintings have no title or description of any kind. Four reasons not to visit the national gallery. In fact a whole section of the exhibition was made up of poorly photographed replicas of paintings that are hanging In the kings private collection. Im guessing that were all the decent work hangs :-(
MoreThe best part I liked was the Thai paintings from different times. Improvement can be to put more narratives on each painting for better understanding of foreign visitors.
MoreEven though the vast majority of the gallery was under renovation, the full admission of 200 baht was charged. Currently only takes about 10 minutes to view the gallery.
MoreNot very good experience. Its cheap but you will mostly see paintings of the Royal family and by the Royal family. To be fair, 60% of the museum was closed because of maintenance, but still it was more like small provincional gallery than national museum.
MoreWay better than I expected. Seamed small at first, but opens up to a good variety of exhibits. All very different, a good way to kill some time for free.
MoreGreat education place, lots of things to learn, cheap fee
The settings and statues are nice. However, there doesnt seem to have many nature and science related displays.
MoreGood museum. Loved the architecture of the buildings to begin with. The displays are also good. However, felt that there was not a lot of diversity. The museum shop was nice too.
MoreDue to the passing of the King entry to the national musuem was free when we went. The displays of the thai history were beautiful. I would have liked to get more information regarding the history of Thailand and about the previous Kings, but it is definitely worth going here as part of the temple tours. I would recommend going.
MoreA very good point to start visiting Bangkok. Free English guide every Wednesday and Thursday 9:30
MoreIts a beautiful place, some exhibitions are under renovation. A nice Thai restaurant is located next to the museum library, the food is very good and cheap.
MoreThe national museum, closed on monday and tuesday ,do not miss this place !!!
Quiet and large. But too many similar exhibits with mostly buddha statues. I also wanted to see modern history. Some rooms are under construction but mostly very similar objects.
MoreA nice musuem wt tons of artifacts to view and check. Do visit when you have time.
MoreThere are many artifacts from Thailands history here, but the museum provides very little context in English or Thai. The objects are somewhat in order, but largely follow the old "put everything on display, but dont tell a story that links them to the countrys history" model of museum operation.
MoreMore than half the exhibits were being renovated, but the ticket price remained the same.We went in, and enjoyed the museum anyway, but it was a rather short visit due to the renovations.
MoreNote: The national Museum is undergoing renovation and some sections are closed or are in need of repair. The 200 baht entrance fee does not justify a visit at this state. For the new and remodeled exhibition halls, its deservingly good at 4 star. Go learn some history!
MoreSo much history and stories here. If you are new to Thai history, be sure to take advantage of a guided tour offers in English, French, German and Japanese. Appointment required.
MoreRaciest! like most of Thailand attractions. At the ticket office to the right hangs a sign in 2 languages 1st Thai 2nd English(coz all Europeans speak and come from England!). In Thai is a much more cheaper price that is meant for Thai face only and in English is 4 times more the price. They will say this is the foreigner (that the culture respect for Europeansprice but never asked to see my I.D. Simply they look my face and issues me a high price(racial profiling). I argued a little but the uneducated simpleminded woman remain sure in her way that this is righteous and why should i not pay more. If i did this to non Europeans in my nation my shop would be shut down before evening and Im in court tomorrow for Racial Discrimination. Also my photo on paper the next day no doubt with the titles "White Racists" i will have to move home from all the hated and dog poo hitting my door. They have joined the UN and this white face pricing system is illegal report it not accept it . Ask yourself how many of them immigrate to our European country and live under the Equality Act and do a back stroke in it. Never will they recruit a qualified European Chef to work in there THAI restaurants in Europe but they only have Thai ethnics immigrants only. Go to a Italian , Spanish tapas bar , french bakery in Asia and see .......only there own kind work there not a single job opportunity a European. Asians are the biggest Farang Racist hypercritical humans on earth
MoreNew renovation can present histories treasure in wonderful arrangement. The lighting and setting up is wonderful. If staff can present and create more story-teller guides or tools or leaflet or poster would be the best place in BKK to visit.
MoreThailand museum is not as grand as others we have seen in Europe but this is a very decent place to visit and get to see largest collections of Thailands historic masterpieces.A guided tour will be ideal to wand around the compound and enjoyed explanation of each prices and relevant history.
MoreGreat collection! Reading up on Thai history and art before coming in will make the visit that much more pleasant! My two favorite halls to visit besides the Siwamokkhaphiman Hall are the
MoreI always love to visit national museum and art gallery. Less crowded by tourist. lot more to see. This bangkok national museum is great place to visit. 2-3 hours required to visit all the sections. Staff is polite and helpfull. They have answered my questions.
More“Often touted as Southeast Asia’s biggest museum, Thailand’s National Museum is home to an impressive collection of religious sculpture, best appreciated on one of the museum’s twice-weekly guided tours (free with museum admission; 9.30am Wed & Thu.Most of the museum’s structures were built in 1782 as the palace of Rama I’s (King Praphutthayotfa; r 1782–1809viceroy, Prince Wang Na. Rama V turned it into a museum in 1874, and today the institute consists of three permanent exhibitions spread out over several buildings. The history wing has made impressive bounds towards mainstream curatorial aesthetics with a succinct chronology of prehistoric, Sukhothai-, Ayuthaya- and Bangkok-era events and figures. Gems include King Ramkamhaeng’s inscribed stone pillar, said to be the oldest record of Thai writing; King Taksin’s throne; the Rama V section; and the screening of a movie about Rama VII, The Magic Ring .The decorative arts and ethnology exhibit covers every possible handicraft: traditional musical instruments, ceramics, clothing and textiles, woodcarving, regalia and weaponry. The archaeology and art history wing has exhibits ranging from prehistoric to the Bangkok period. In addition to the main exhibition halls, the Buddhaisawan (PhutthaisawanChapel includes some well-preserved original murals and one[…]”Excerpt From: Lonely Planet. “Lonely Planet Thailand (Travel Guide).” iBooks.
MoreThe old building in the front is not well-maintained and not really worth a visit. Their sculpture section has some of the best pieces in modern Thai art history though. The inner garden and more airy space in the back which hosts more contemporary art are not bad.
MoreAs of feb 2016 part of the museum is under restoration. Even with half of the museum open to public, the museum makes the best and most underrated tourist destination in bangkok, in my opinion. Come here to see some world class Buddha art. The museum itself is old, lacking helpful signs and curation. The upside is you get to see the treasures up close and without the annoying tourist crowd. Hopefully after restoration the museum gains the shine it deserves. Def recommend!
MoreGreat museum of the Thai history and even more interesting exhibitions of various periods sculptures, tools, handicraft etc. A must see in Bangkok.
MoreI was lucky enough to get in free to this quirky museum just behind Khao San. If, like me, you are used to National Galleries in the US and Europe the main collection will probably be a disappointment, the most interesting things to check out are the paintings done by the current King of Thailand, hes a dab hand with a paintbrush. However, head outside and youll find a glasshouse that hosts temporary exhibitions. On my few trips here I have seen some great photography and sculptures. I wouldnt go out of my way to visit, but if you are in the area and need a culture hit its a nice way to spend an hour.
