Trafalgar Square art museum whose masterworks trace the development of Western European painting.
We’ve had the most wonderful experience at the National Gallery this weekend. The building is amazing, but most of all the personal touch of Alan, who told us everything about the paintings and their history! Alan should be a guide at the museum, his knowledge is amazing and his way of telling about the paintings is remarkable. Thank you for making our day and visit unforgetable! 😊
A truly inspiring location that I have been visiting since I was 16 years old. Best to buy tickets in advance for shows so you can skip the long queues to get into the building which seem to snake along the street!Once inside the collection is simply outstanding and free, with such an incredible walk through history
A beautiful art museum to spend days and days at. Walked in for a few minutes only to discover an endless opportunity for exploration. And the best part, its free! What a gem! Just go!
I cant emphasize enough how mesmerizing the national gallery is. Easily needs 4 hours. There are so many breathtaking pieces of art that you would stop and look for minutes without a blink of an eye. Please donate to the gallery. The staff is v welcoming, friendly, and helpful to everyone.
Thoughts: the gallery entry is free of charge, the building architecture and interior design is amazing, you can get tour guide to explain major paintings and the story behind them. If you are tight on time or not interested in paintings, this gallery can be skipped.Time: around 2 hoursChildren: although children are allowed to enter, I believe that it is not suitable to anyone less than 18 years old as they will be bored since it only presents paintings and nothing else.
Spent an amazing afternoon here and what a treat to see so many famous works of art. The entrance is free (rare in London! ). We really enjoyed wandering around taking in the art. Highly recommend.
💡 PRO TIP: Daily guided tour from 3-4 PM with Free admission from Tuesdays - Thursdays (excluding public holidays)Incredible collection! It is rare to see Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Monet, Renoir all under one roof. Great paintings, really well maintained galleries, organized & a lot of benches to rest and enjoy the paintings furtherFrom viewing renaissance to classical paintings here, you will completely get lost in the middle of the greatest artists in the world. The gallery has Nice restaurant and a coffee shop along with two separate shops to take back some really quirky souvenirs!
Beautiful building, breath taking pictures and great collection. Its free to visit except few exhibitions which are chargeable and require pre booking. There are multiple rooms segregated based on the artists or the type of art. Just amazing to visit.Right next to Trafalgars sqaure, so as much centre of London as it could be.
The story of European art, masterpiece by masterpiece 🎨🖼 Besides, the entrance is free and great shop is inside with books and staff for painting and embroidery. Also there is a tasty Cafe with meal and snacks ☕️
Words cannot express how incredible this museum is, an absolute must for any art lover. It spans a huge collection of artworks from some of the most important artists of all time, such as Botticelli, Caravaggio, Velázquez or Gainsborough, among many others. It is immense, so it requires more than a visit to be thoroughly explored. Simply amazing, and free, so theres no excuse not to visit it.
I went there with my daughters and wife.In my country it is very rare to have a chance to see painting done by Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Monet, Renoir etc...There are some pieces of art that you might want to reserve some time just to check all the details, they will blow your mind. All the museum is spotless, all the employees that I talked to were very helpful and very nice.It was a great visit that I want to repeat as soon as possible.
Vast collection of masterpieces from celebrated artists. Well organised collection. Flow of people was well organised too. On top of that, the entrance is free, you just have to book tickets online ahead of time. I actually booked mine only a couple of hours before our visit. We stayed for a couple of hours but mind you, you can stay the whole day there and still won’t be able to finish seeing and appreciating all the amazing works. Worth a visit. 👌
One of the best painting collection in the world. Many important artist from different ages. The building is amazing. Good restaurant inside. Dont miss it.
The national gallery is one of the most beautiful and old buildings in London and it’s free to visit. So If you love art and want to see some oldest paintings of the world then this place is for you. The gallery is situated in Trafalgar Square and the closest station is charing cross. This building was founded almost 200 years ago and has more than 2,300 paintings from the mid-13th century to 1900. Generally in weekends it’s quite crowded so better plan to go on weekdays.
It always takes my breath away. I love to go in and find my favourite paintings even if I have only got 45 minutes! The joy that this treasured building is free to enter makes it possible to do this - and makes me so proud. I used to go straight for the museums…. Till the first time I went in! I was stunned by the depth of Turner’s paintings and the sheer size of some….. and the way they glow. Pictures cannot do it justice. Always try and make time for the gift shop. Look up at the ceilings…. Look down at the floors. Magnificent.
Visiting The National Gallery has been a pilgrimage for me every time I am in London and everytime the experience becomes more magical. The museum is a brilliant treasure of western art. An absolute must see.....
Incredible gallery with a great selection of art. A must visit for van gogh fans. It can be very busy in some sections but there is great sign posting and routes so you can decide what you would like to see before venturing into this huge gallery!
Perfect place for an art lover. They have maps displayed at the entry which makes it easier for you to cover all the areas inside the gallery. It is beautiful and a must visit. Also,it is free to visit, you just need to book a Free ticket at their website.
The national gallery is such a beautiful building and can be visited for free. It is completely accessible with lifts for anyone who needs it, including prams. There is air conditioning so it is a nice place to go to get out of the heats. Some exhibits can cost money to visit and you should check before you go in case you would like to pay to see something extra.
Amazing collection, but the museum should be more modern. Suggestions (if they wont more Ill be glad to provide): The paintings description should have QR codes for full analysis and description and connections for other sites and videos. There should be an App with the 3 paths suggested and by Author, period, technique, etc. but also another were we could choose our own path in advance.
Love it!Recommend to Visit!Incredible !some painting are so realistic and beautiful, colors are so bright, you should see all of them with your own eyes one day . I sawRembrandt , Leonardo , Monet, Van Gogh , PicassoSome of the paintings are more then700 years
What a GEM. Places like this make me thankful there are so many affordable and free places around London to culturally enrich ourselves. Especially museums with collections as extensive as this? Please dont pass up a visit when youre in the city centre! Theres understandably so much to see and do but an hour spent here is as good as any, truly. If you want to get a good look around Id set aside 3 hours (took me 4 but Im slow!), because they have so many works from such an array of artists, and they introduced me to so many names Id never come across before but will be on the lookout for going forward!I particularly appreciated the short but very detailed summary on the wall of each room regarding the works inside as a fair few museums dont have that, or at least not at the same frequency of occurrence or level of depth.Cant recommend enough, visit this museum!
A huge gallery with impressive pieces of art. I absolutely loved it. Make sure you have plenty of time when you go there. And a very pleasant bonus: its free of charge ❤️
Excellent free day out in London! Beautiful works of art to see, fantastic building and friendly staff. Good gift shops, cafe was a little pricey, toilets were good. Plently of seating to rest if you are with elderly family members.
My last visit is on June 2nd. I relaxed a lot to admire the greatest masterpieces in the world, I always feel at home. It will be my favorite destination every face I come to London. At the moment until the end of July you will be able to see the Raphael exhibition, I recommend it.You can easily take pictures, the important thing is that they are without flash so as not to ruin the works of art
What an amazing collection that is well organized and free to the public! Three “routes” suggested by the gallery depending on the “era” of artists to help you navigate. I especially enjoyed the Monet and Van gogh selections, and it was great and SO creative how they compared the two women portraits of Picasso and Ingres together side by side - a superb educational moment that helps to make the public more art-involved! I was also pleasantly surprised by a Klimt! You can easily spend an entire day navigating the gallery slowly and absorbing the descriptions and artwork; however if you are pressed for time, I suggest focusing on one of the three “routes” and allotting about 1-1.5h to really enjoy the artwork without rushing.
Beautiful collection, I would recommend this museum to someone that really likes paintings cause the museum is all about that. I specially liked the “Picasso Ingres” area, really nice to see it with my own eyes.
It was great place. Clean. Beautiful. There were lots of people in there, as aspected. The down side for me was the fact that there was no guide.I know there are tabs on the wall to explain some of the paintings, however, there were some things that had no explanation and there was no one to guide us.Overall, it’s a good place to hangout for the weekend.
Had a great time viewing renaissance and classical paintings here. A lot of them were inspired by religious figures and events. The ice cream art installation outside was said to mean political instability, I dont recall which artist is responsible.
We spent about 3 hours at the Gallery. The app Keeper of Paintings will keep your kids entertained all the time. My daughters (11 & 5 y.owere enthusiastic to find all the colours for the palette and to collect all the badges. This app is great when you are visiting a gallery with kids. Also we went to a a workshop in room 34. I love these workshops because they enable children to develop and improve their painting skills.
Super fun paintings! There are even Picasso and van go in there which was a very fun expireince. Love how you can see big Ben from the outside
One of my favourite places to visit in London where you can just wander for hours or just spend a short time, so whatever suits your needs. As its free entry, you can come and go as you please. I would recommend setting aside a couple of hours though as there is such a good collection of many masters paintings. It takes my back to when i studied most of them at school. So I always have such fond memories when i visit here. Come as a group and get the children involved and start to appreciate some art or I like to even go by myself on a rainy London day and spend a few hours meandering through. Great for locals and tourists alike.
Great place to visit if you like art . Must place to see even once for London. Many famous artists for free . Some of pictures are just incredible and some rooms are like castle
One of the best art museums located in the heart of London at the famous Trafalgar square. You have to book tickets in advance online, however, entry is totally free and in case of non rush hours they do not even check your tickets which mean you dont have to stand in queue as well.In addition to the portraits and the paintings the architecture of the gallery from the inside is really wonderful.Recommended for a long visit for art lovers but even if you are not an art lover - still recommended for a quick visit if youre in Trafalgar Square.
I love the way the National Gallery have made visits easier by proposing three different routes - the A, B or C. This makes a visit there more manageable. In the past, I have been somewhat overwhelmed by the vastness of the collections. The artworks were beautifully displayed but noisy schoolchildren fooling around and amateur artists plonked right in front of some paintings blocking your frontal view tended to mar slightly the wonderful experience. On the whole, though, it was a wonderful experience.
Free entry. Central location. Many many many famous paintings here. Architecture is always amazing in London. I really wanted to see the painting inside the Skyfall movie but the location is not the same with the scene. That was a little bit disappointing.
Its for free! So you cant make a wrong decision going there. I can definitely recommend the museum! Many famous pictures and a very nice architecture.
Amazing! As a person who doesnt like that much of paintings, i have to say that it was a amazing experience to visit this place!A lot of different pieces and my favorites was the paintings retracts the landscapes and elements of nature and there are o lot of them there to make you feel emotionals! The Monet and Gogh paintings are really beatiful, i cant wait to visit their museums!
Wonderful in every detail! I went to visit there today, and I’m in love! You will find important moments of history in the form of art, everything is very beautiful, clean and organized. They have a cafeteria and restaurant inside the gallery which makes it even more attractive!
Beautiful gallery! Beautiful!Must visit while in London!Lot of seats inside. I love just to sit down and soak in the atmosphere. So much to see!Entry is free but you can make a donation.Toilets , coffee shop and gift shop inside.Nice view of Trafalgar Square from balcony.Security guys and lady at the desk were very nice.
Incredible experience at national gallery!! Great paintings, really well maintained galleries, very clean and a lot of benches to rest and enjoy the paintings further. The gallery is vast and theres always so much to learn about the portraits themselves and even the little shop has a choice selection of good stuff often at decent prices.
A gallery thats free to explore and its absolutely intriguing to read up on the history of some of the most famous paintings in the world. The gallery is vast and theres always so much to learn about the portraits themselves and even the little shop has a choice selection of good stuff often at decent prices.
Incredible experience at national gallery!! Great paintings, really well maintained galleries, very clean and a lot of benches to rest and enjoy the paintings further. I love how smooth it was to enter the gallery with the booked times and very very covid safe with hand sanitisers everywhere.
You can only see a snippet of the national gallery in one visit but dont let that put you off! I think its helpful to have an era of series off artists that you want to look at otherwise it can be overwhelming. Dont necessarily just search out the most famous paintings, there are so many lesser known gems (and the rooms arent do full!). Friendly staff although not all particularly knowledgeable about art I have to say! Tempting and expensive shop is rather dangerous! Need to keep coming back to see different sections, could do this for years.
Beautiful gallery with some truly unique pieces such as The Van Gogh sunflower - booking in advance needed due to Covid - the museum is free as many in London they ask for donations but this isn’t obligatory - next to the national portrait gallery and trafalgar square. Definitely recommend it.
The building itself is worthy of a visit, the pillars, high ceilings, and wallpapers are impressive. The impressionist room is a star-studded room. It really does have a shock factor. The toilet facilities are great and I highly recommend booking a free ticket online before arrival.
Simply wonderful. It was my biggest dream to see a few paintings like William Turners the fighting Temeraire, the Ambassadors by Hans Holbein the younger etc before death and dreams do come true. I visited the gallery today. The entry is free, thanks to the British government and one should remember that the gallery is very crowded. I sat in a chair nearby to enjoy the beauty of a painting but I couldnt sit for more than 30 seconds due to the profusion of people coming and going around. Also, dont forget to wear a mark as London is becoming the epicentre of Covid-19.
I really cant describe how this Gallery is so important to our heritage. This has been something we both wanted to visit in a long time. Amazing paintings but to many to name. Every painting is unique in its own way. You can spend hours in here. Nice restaurant and coffee shop. This Gallery is spotless.
A heaven for art lovers...Every time I visit London, I try to spend some time enjoying the greatest paintings of all time under one roof. And what could be better than the fact that it is absolutely free of cost. The facilities are incredible and the gift shop is also wonderful.
One of the best galleries in the world and definitely worth a visit. Love the winding, huge beautiful rooms full of classic art. The staff in the Cafe were great when we visited. Other than a bit too heavy handed on the unnecessary heating we have no complaints about our visit.
