I have been challenged by life. Not giving up : self destructive. Coronavirus provided my room here. Im happy ; for it will be over soon. To have a bathroom around the clock : I cried and went to work on my songs

Well, the room itself was just fine. It was like staying in an old boarding room almost. Dont expect perfection from this place but do expect a clean, well cared for hotel with a friendly staff. The only reason this is getting a 4 star is because the window in our room faced another building which is no big deal but the alley not alley thing was covered in disgusting trash. Appeared to be from the other building but it was pretty gross. Literally just kept the curtains drawn. Other than that this was the nicest cheapest non hostel we could find.

Stayed 1 night at a great rate. Its too bad the staff does not match the charm of this vintage hotel but then you get what. you pay for. An acknowledgement of my greeting or being greeted warmly would be a simple no cost improvement.

I stayed at The Monarch a few months ago and I’m planning a trip up to San Francisco again. The customer service was beyond exceptional! I absolutely loved the level of professionalism provided by the staff! The hotel itself was perfect, comfy, & exactly what we were looking for! This is my go to place when I go to San Francisco!

When we arrived at the Monarch Hotel the Hotel was clean and very inviting. Maria welcome us with her friendly attitude and severing heart. I explained to her that my daughter had brought her friend and we would need another bed. She said no problem and put us in another room at no extra cost. After reading all of the reviews, I couldnt believe how nice the rooms are, clean and comfortable. Rooms have ceiling fans that keep temperatures comfortable.I took a walk to check out the homeless problem. Not many homeless, did run into two police officers who work the Homeless Division. They told me not to worry they patrol the area all the time. My daughter and her friend were going to a concert a block away from the Hotel. The parking garage was only a block away from the hotel. It was a great time and the location was fantastic. Will definitely be back.

Worst experience in a hotel Ive ever had. No AC no WiFi, tv was from the yr 1990 and they only gave us two pillows and they were the cheapest pillows you can get. Parking was very hard to find unless you parked in a parking garage, that costs $32 a day. The elevator was very old, all in all the whole hotel is old and located in a terrible neighborhood with too many homeless people that keep you up at night.

Love the quaint-ness of this hotel! I was not to fond of the location, due to the amount of homeless people in the area. However, it was only a few blocks down from Nob Hill and that makes up for it. The staff has been wonderful. Maria was very polite and helpful!

Fake description on google. It says free parking and free WiFi and a A/C. What we got is 90$ parking for three days and bad WiFi which we couldn’t work with and no A/C. We also waited 10 min at the description when we tried to check in. Edit your wrong information. Room is good clean and big enough but little noisy from the homeless people. For this hotel our stay was too expensive.

I was terrified to stay there with my kids and family coz of negative reviews. Indeed there r lots of people in street with nowhere to stay and can be noisy time and again but i have nothing complain about hotel itself. It is clean with very friendly staffs. Happy during stay.

Hard pass. Entry-level youth hostel experience. Not for the faint of heart.Various outlets and lightbulbs werent operational. Loose bathroom tiles. No air conditioning. Ceiling fan in the room dangled precariously and squeaked throughout the night.Sophies choice on whether to have a cooling breeze or noisy downtown traffic with open windows.Mostly original construction, fixtures and amenities. Staff are pleasant. Our recommendation would be to avoid this property until they invest some capital back into the property itself. My heart still breaks for this neglected beauty.

You get what you pay for in this case. So, as long as you expect very little from the hotel then you will not be disappointed. It’s old, yes it’s old and everything is old. It’s as clean as the staff can clean an old worn down building. I will pay more and stay someplace else next time. No A/C in the building was not a problem for comfort but with the windows open in the room all night the sounds of crime and sirens abound at the Monarch.

This hotel is absolute trash. The pictures online are nothing like what you actually get. The room reeked. The sheets were nasty, stained and had burn holes in them. The carpet was filthy and there was trash underneath the bed. There was also what appeared to be feces under the bed but I definitely did not get close enough to know for sure. The shower was disgusting, thankfully I had brought a pair of flip flops I used as shower shoes. The street that the hotel is on is absolutely awful as well. (I am aware this is not the hotels fault but I feel obligated to warn anyone who is interested in booking this hotelThere’s no parking at the hotel so I had to parked a little ways down the street and I did not feel safe walking from the parking garage to the hotel. The streets smell rank and are covered with human urine and feces. If you’re looking to stay in San Francisco please chose a hotel in a safer neighborhood. It is definitely worth a little extra money and I regret my choice in booking this hotel and wish I had chosen a better location.

Let me make this quick, the pics you see on the website are not what you get, our room smelled like piss and was dirty. Would not let my dog stay here. I came in late and had no choice but to stay the night, the homeless shelter across the street was fun to look at( sarcastic). There were cars on the street that had signs on the dash board reading “ please don’t break my windows I have nothing of value in here” WOW. I would give a negative star I would.

Decent hotel for the price. The service was alright, there is free water and coffee in the lobby. The basement is a bit scary so I wouldnt visit at night by yourself. Its not the hotels fault but there are homeless across the street camping out. The beds were decent and the rooms were spacious that included a large closet and a safe. The bathroom was decent, however, the door kept getting stuck. The stairs were creaky and the elevator did break down once. Despite the homeless, it has a great location as its under twenty minutes away from Japantown and about 24 minutes from Chinatown. I would come back here.

PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE YOU GO!!!:Allow me to list all the ways in which this hotel did not follow through on any and all expectations:There are no microwaves or toasters in the rooms. My family had to specifically request a fridge and have it brought up, even though our order had included a fridge already. We were on a higher floor, and anytime we wanted to microwave food we either had to wait for an ancient, clunky wooden elevator (theres only one for the entire hotelor go down all the stairs to use the one hidden in the dark kitchen behind the lobby. The wifi works only in the early morning. I suspect this is because they use a wifi that isnt meant for so many people to use. Even sitting in the lobby, pages would not load, and my laptop and phone both said there was no connection. I was really irritated and enraged by this because they promise Free WiFi, and they need to follow through on that.Dirtiest bath tub I have ever seen!! There were dirt and stains that would not come out no matter how hard I scrubbed! The cleaners always brought the minimum amount of towels possible, even after we repeatedly informed them that we were a party of four that would need more than one washcloth, one hand towel, and one body towel.Overall, this hotel is in a great location, but only worth it if you can get over what is stated above. Also it is unacceptable for the hotel to promise certain things and NOT HAVE THEM!!!

After reading some of the reviews I was on the fence about booking this hotel but I did because my cousin said it was decent. And yes, it is a great hotel with great staff. It was noisy but it is located in the middle of the city so I expected this. Homeless was not a problem. This hotel was in a great location for all the tourist sites. I enjoyed the stay and WILL book them again. If you read the reviews like myself dont always rely on them. This was a great hotel. Clean and helpful. Unfortunately to get a blow dryer you needed to pay which sucked.

The hotel is clean inside. Service seemed to be really nice. It is a bit of a walk to the hotel. The most upsetting part of the stay was the out of control homeless camp right next to the hotel. It is disgusting and extremely upsetting to walk through peoples bedding, urine, and worse. It also feels extremely unsafe.

Great budget friendly hotel with a very convenient location, comfy beds, friendly, helpful and thoughtful staff. What else you can wish for? We enjoyed our stay a lot. We loved that the building is old so it has a soul and a story to tell. Room was a decent size with a HUGE walk-in closet. Bathroom wasn’t redone in a while but I can’t complain about it for the price I’ve paid for the service I got.Yes, there are some homeless guys hanging around outside the building but this area is full of them wherever you go. Honestly, we couldn’t care less. We got a very nice hotel room for a very good price, come on, why would I care about couple of guys living nearby:)Also, We didn’t hear even one serene during our stay and we didn’t know that there is a fire department around the corner before reading some reviews here now.Overall very good experience. I definitely recommend this place for budget travelers!

Stayed here for 3 days as part of a tour group. Room was ok and clean. Floors of whole hotel havnt been vaccumed for a while. Old elevator was rough but kinda fun! Is an old building so you have to understand that things arnt going to be modern. The area is terrible. Its the homeless part of san fran and either though we were never bothered by them its definitely not a welcoming part of town. Our room was the last room and right next to the alleway behind and if you look outside you may catch someone going to the toilet right in the street. Yep only saying that because i was unlucky to see it.Constant sirens and bring some ear plugs.

Pros: good staff service, room service clean, central location near shops and restaurants, free flow coffee and teaCons: weak/absent Wi-fi, location is on the edge of the “dodgy/smelly” Tenderloin district which may be a surprise to some visitors if you haven’t done your research on the neighbourhood. Like other hotels, it is pricey for what it has to offer.Having said all of that I would still consider staying here again myself if price was cheaper, but would probably not recommend it to friends/family.

A decent hotel for a budget traveler. It was sleep worthy, the bed wasnt too bad. Keeping in mind the building is old and historic but there was mold on the wall in the bathroom, the tub needed a good scrub, the safes were antiques and the keys were missing and our door didnt lock. Luckily, nothing we had was stolen, the staff were friendly and polite! If there were a few upgrades Id book again!

Stayed in this hotel for 3 days this week. It was a terrible stay. Old outdated floors makes squeaking noise anytime people walk. Plumbing system needs a change as it stinks all the time. Small lift, couldnt get the shower rite either its too boiling hot or cold. Being in the downtown location be prepared to bothered with homeless and junkies swearing and fighting noises.

The Monarch Hotel is most absolutely a amazing option for person traveling to San Francisco that wants a good accommodation, without having to spend a ridiculous magnitude of money for it. The building is on the older side, but the room worked for one night. The elevator is pretty Bad to be frank, but there was a sign inside that said theyre working on renovating it. The room is dated but its not a deal breaker. Also, rooms are a little bit on the smaller side, but there is a closet, a private bathroom, which is a plus, and a flat screen TV. The bed was pretty comfortable as well. There is no air conditioning, but its san francisco and you really have such nice summers here. There is always coffee in the lobby and it is actually really good. I felt safe at all times of day while here. .

The pictures are quiet old, as the rooms. We had an issue with the room, I flushed the toilets after a pee and they were stucked, also the water was continuously running so the bathroom and the corridor get all wet... I had to go quickly try to stop it... Well I had mixed water and pee on my socks after, amazing! All this to explain how I was expecting some apologies that never came, instead they were acting like it was my fault, they changed us in another room, smaller, with no view and no heater... So, obviously, Ill not recommend them to anyone.

Decent place to stay no doubt, our room was clean, the lobby was nice. They do have an elevator it is old but this is an old hotel so yes there are parts that are old. Staff was pleasant like other reviews mention the fire station is near by, we did have a lot of sirens going off throughout the night but it was okay for us, there is a lot of homeless people surrounding the area but like others have said they dont bother you just stay alert youre good, there is parking available but you will have to pay quite a bit I think they said 32$ for over 12 hours or something so we opted out of a rental car because it wasnt worth it we just used Uber which was great. Lots of things close by to walk to as well. There is a mini fridge in the room, king bed huge closet the bathroom was small. There is no do not disturb signs to hang on the door knob so housekeeping kinda tries to walk in without saying anything that was a bit surprising for us, but decent place for sure.

Everything is fine in this hotel. If you are visiting San Francisco, it is a good place to stay. I stayed 3 days in it and I mostly visited San Francisco by foot because the Hotel is near most of the attractions (except the Golden Gate bridge). Staff is very friendly and they help you out whenever you have questions. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5, is the wifi. There is only one router for the whole hotel so sometimes you have to go to the lobby if you want perfect reception of the wifi.

We had an unexpected layover in San Francisco, I called up the hotel at about one in the morning looking for a room. The hotel staff were very friendly and very helpful they were able to get us a room for the night and they even let us check out late at 1pm the next day without additional charge. The building is old but the rooms are clean and comfortable for the price this place was a fantastic option I would definitely stay here again. The hotel is a short walk to Union square and about a half hour walk to the waterfront excellent location.

Stayed here 2 weeks ago and it was a bit of an odd experience. I arrived on a Sunday in the early afternoon. I asked the guy working the front desk if it was too early to check in and it was(no biggie, its what I expectedI left my bags and I was just double checking there wouldnt be an issue with the time I was expecting to return later that evening(sometime around midnight). The guy working started acting a little weird with how he was communicating with me, he asked me about 3 times when I was planning on coming back, which I had already made pretty clear. Then he asked what I would be doing when I got back around midnight... this caught me off guard a little, and then he went a step further and asked if I wanted to "hang out" when I got back....So unprofessional... and it also made me really uncomfortable.Thankfully that guy wasnt working when I returned or during the rest of my visit. The other two gentlemen that worked the front desk during the rest of my stay were very nice and helpful and remained professional. Not sure what the deal was with the first guy.The room was ok, but nothing spectacular and certainly not worth the price. The AC was broken so I had to have the windows open... that was interesting(to say the least). The bathroom was kind of gross. Not cleaned well, and the sink backed up everytime I used it. The ice machine is all the way in the basement, and its kind of creepy going down there by yourself. It smells really musty and moldy down there and It made me wonder how well and often the ice machine is properly cleaned. Cant say I would ever stay here again if I were in the area and I certainly would never recommend it to anyone I know.

I thought it was a very comfortable hotel,my room was clean, the front desk clerk was very people friendly and helpful. The lobby was a nice "first impression" ,but the elevators were a bit iffy, its an old building,so... just let it happen and youll be fine. The only downside for most is the noise outside your window, bring earplugs or keep the windows closed, personally I didnt mind it. When u live out in the countryside then its fun watching the noisey nightlife of the city. The parking is around $35 ,garage around the corner or valet, both kind of expensive, but cheaper then if u park on the street and possibly get your car broken into.hey its the city.and its fun!!

Thank you Monarch Hotel! Very friendly and helpful staff. My daughters and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The hotel is quaint and has a "historic" feel to it. Though there are homeless people all over....we were never bothered. The room was clean . We stayed 5 days. Each day we came back to find our room clean and our things still there.. . No bugs ( I really appreciated this). We requested top floor and they complied 😄😄. I would stay again.

Considering its located in a very Pricey San Francisco, the quality-price relation is acceptable. Old hotel, old rooms, old elevator, old stairs... everything is old, but at least I didnt have any problems at all. You should consider this hotel if youre only looking for a place to spend the night at, just as I did. Beware that theres a Homeless care center right in front of the hotel, so there are many homeless around the area. Monarch is located nearby many restaurants and some shops, theres access to public transportation as well.

As someone who travels for work often and stays in a lot of mediocre hotels, I am not often pleasantly surprised. I have stayed at the Monarch several times, and although it is simple, I am ALWAYS happy here. The rooms are clean (SO important!), the beds are comfortable, and the staff is super nice. The location is fantastic for walking around, and there are a ton of restaurants and places to go out within a block or two. One thing-- the first time I stayed here, the internet was super spotty, but the second time its working very well, so they may have updated it. Fair warning, its not a luxury hotel, but if youre the kind of person who would rather spend money on eating, drinking, and doing activities instead of staying in a super nice hotel room, its really great for the money. Its a lot of bang for your buck, hands down.

Know what youre getting into. Its an older hotel, so rooms are smaller and might not be the most updated. That being said, I really liked it! It was clean, and met our needs. The staff has been so friendly - we came early for baggage storage, but they let us check in early without a fee instead. They also helped with other aspects and made us feel comfortable. Great price, with your own bathroom (not usual for SF at this price). Be careful at night.

Location is not the best area. Bums across the street fighting 24/7. Construction going on for a high rise being built also across the street. Just a few blocks away you hit nice area with malls and upscale stores. Is it the hotels fault for these items not really. The reason I took away stars is the wifi . Its horrible. In fact dont even plan on using it. The second reason is the walls are so thin you hear everything.Other than this the place is clean. Friendly helpful staff. Decent sized rooms with no bugs and nice size tvs with plenty of channels.

The location was acceptable. However, this hotel felt old and smelled musty. The room floors creaked incredibly loudly, and noises could be heard easily coming from the hallway and other rooms. This place was depressing. It will be my first and last two star hotel experience. The whole hotel had a nasty, almost urine like odor. The room was a decent size, but the floor was super creaky. The bed was like one large spring and sunk in the middle. The room had no hair dryer. It was very musty and seemed to be moldy. The staff was very friendly, the lobby was fine, and the price was right but basically... Never again. Do not stay here.

The Monarch is very good at being exactly what it is: an inexpensive, centrally located hotel in a city where space is at a premium. Yes, the room is maybe 150 Sq feet total and could use a little paint in places. However, it is clean and the bed is nice (although it is NOT A queen- it is a full no matter what it said on my reservation). As such it is perfectly adequate. After all, if you come to a city like San Francisco and then stay in your hotel room you are doing it wrong. As other reviewers have said there are homeless people wandering the streets in the general vicinity, but that hardly makes it a bad neighborhood (hell, there are Tesla and Jaguar dealerships a block away!). You see, San Francisco is a large densely populated city; it is going to have individuals who are less fortunate. All major cities do, and in San Juan and Seattle it is much worse. Being human too, these individuals wander around as they please and dont stay in "slums". So, if you have a delicate constitution and are bothered by this you may want to skip the Monarch and other hotels under $300 a night.

The Monarch is a great, inexpensive, centrally located hotel that provides a place to sleep, but dont expect much of anything else. You get what you pay for, which means no fridge, pool, gym, or any other frills. Not even coffee makers in the room or continental breakfast. You can have coffee in the lobby 24 hours a day. Thats it. If you need a place to stay, quick, like you just got a hooker and dont want to take her to your place, this is a good place to choose.

No noise privacy, can hear every other room down the hall. The room is very dirty, no air conditioning only a ceiling fan that feels like a subway train crossing overhead, was afraid it would fall off and hit us. No fridge, no ice bucket. Towels were like sand paper because of how used they are. Tub was very dirty. Internet is slower than NetZero back in the 90s.However, the lobby was nice and so were the staff.

Its a nice budget hotel, basic but okay. Bed was excellent, and the housekeeping was fine. TV had HBO. Staff were friendly but not over-familiar. The decor is tired, but the carpets were being renewed while I was there. My room was right at the far end of the hotel, and there the Wifi was frustrating - slow and prone to drop. The area isnt great - avoid walking southeast from the hotel (especially Ellis Street), and there is a homeless shelter next door, but much of the surrounding area has been bought up for redevelopment so gentrification - of sorts - should be on its way. Finally, you have a very pleasant Mels Drive-In serving traditional American food and an AMC Theater in the same block as the hotel, and you are very close to Van Ness, which offers some fascinating architecture - many prestigious car showrooms are there - and buses going to the Wharf, etc. for just a couple of dollars.

I was booked into this place by my companys travel agency. I want to fire the travel agency.Short list of issues: No parking. Elevator is big enough for one person and maybe a small cat (provided you hold it over your head). Elevator may or may not actually make it to your floor. Room was so poorly insulated that I could hear movement in rooms down the hall. No air conditioning. Window opened up on charming street scene below where I could see the addicts attending to their habits. Nice view of the local porn theater.I decided that there was no way I was staying, and when I went down to say so-long the desk guy actually told me that I couldnt leave. Really...he said I couldnt leave. I said "watch me" and walked out.Ive seen other reviewers claim that the negative reviews were from "picky travelers". Hey, Im fine with basic accommodations, just give me a clean bed and a quiet room where I dont feel the need for a concealed carry permit and my own oxygen supply and Ill be right as rain. I drove down to the marina district, found a nice place for much less money and it included parking. If you like local "color" in the form of homeless street people, enjoy surly desk staff, and you dont mind paying top dollar for an overly hot room where you get to share in the conversations and other activities of your fellow guests then by all means make a reservation right now!
