Whitewashed, canalside pub with a homely feel and a hearty menu of seasonal British dishes.
The Malt Shovel in Rutana
Description
Excellent friendly service. Good location next to the canal and lock. Good ambience inside with wood fire burning. Good food, good proportions.
MoreThe team were amazing from booking and serving our food the manager Rhys was exceptional as with the his customer service and ability to go above and beyond, if a bonus is to be rewarded he deserves one..Well done to the team..worth visiting but do book ahead to avoid disappointment..
MoreStaff Were Very Friendly..We Received Our Dinner Very Quick..We Had The Roast Dinner..it Was Lovely..it Could Of Been Hotter..The Extra Dish Of Potatoes Were Hot..But it Was Still Nice
MoreReally lovely pub, the Sunday lunch was amazing.
Had a lovely lunch and the food was very good. However, only one starter was ordered out of the four covers which arrived after the mains. Whilst we enjoyed the food, the chairs were stained the carpet was dirty and the walls needed painting. So although we enjoyed our meals, the place itself felt shabby.
MoreNice rustic pub with excellent food and brilliant servers. Located right next to the canal, easy to pop in for a pint on a walk.
MoreFood was great. Pizza, Burger, kids fish.Staff were excellent and friendly.Lovely location.
MoreLovely pub in a great location. The food is great and the service from the staff was fantastic. I actually had a bit of a problem with my meal but the lady serving us sorted it out straight away with no fuss at all, cant really ask for more. I highly recommend!
MoreIt is in a lovely position overlooking the canal and the staff usually save us a window table. The menu is tasty, but, more important, the staff take great care with my coeliac friends requirements.
Morethe foods are beyond great, friendly staff and cozy place too
An all-round wonderful experience, excellent food, wonderful attentive, friendly staff & very congenital surroundings. One of my go to places for a catch-up with friends when visiting from Australia.
MoreLocated just by canal, large outside area. We had lunch and everybody liked their food. The burger I had was one of the best burgers Ive ever had in a pub.
MoreDecent pub in a great location. Perfect for a summer afternoon drink by the canal. However the board outside clearly says:"As about our selection of cask ales""We are cask marque accredited"However the ales available are all dull, tasteless, commercial dishwater. The craft beer revolution happened years ago, its hardly a new thing. If you are going to position yourself as a "cask ale" pub then at least have a few proper craft ales. If you cant bear dealing with microbreweries then theres always Brewdog and Beavertown.Even divey chain pubs have these nowadays.
MoreOrdered on Just Eat , got to 3pm I ordered for 2.30pm and the restaurant cancelled the order!! Im left hungry and really angry . I order a regular Sunday roast from them and Im treated like this?? I phoned to complain and the girl said its because they run out of beef ??? Well if you havent got the food dont take the order!! I was offered turkey instead but Id have to rebook the order and she said Id have to wait at least 40 minutes, so I didnt bother!! Thanks for treating me so BADLY!!! Its not as if the food is cheap either .
MoreHad a lovely Sunday roast at this fine riverside pub. Food was fantastic and presented perfectly. Service from Ben, who attended to us from start to finish, was impeccable. Great service, nice relaxed atmosphere and would definitely recommend!
MoreI have been here several times and always appreciate the warm atmosphere. This time unfortunately my meal was over cooked and we were in a rush to eat and go somewhere else so couldn’t send it back. Told the waitress the veg curry with chicken had the chicken over cooked and rice too… other meals were fine. Not what I expected. Will go again hopefully this was just a bad day…
MoreHad family dinner for my birthday, Fish and Chips was gorgeous, delicious little flower pot dessert too.Shout out to chefs Danny and Chris and Courtney who waited on us so attentively.
MoreHad a very pleasant meal which we all enjoyed, the waitress was very attentive and informative and the barman was great. Good selection of beers. Thoroughly enjoyed it. August 16th
MoreGreat place, loved the ambience, delicious food. Great customer service. Would recommend going there for a nice and splendid evening.
MoreMalt shovel (Vintage Inn).Well cooked Sea Bass and Steak, nicely presented with excellent service.Dog friendly, inside and out.
MoreWe had an amazing dinner today at Malt Shovel and this wasn’t the first time we had a good time there. The food is always tasty and well-made, the place itself has a wonderful atmosphere, and don’t even mention the fabulous staff. We were served by Ben and he was amazing. When you see that the staff is having fun, smiling and enjoying their time there while working it tells a lot about the place, too. It’s really important to hire nice people and then provide them with a good place to work so they’ll contribute a huge portion of the pub’s amazing energy. Keep it up guys because we’ll return from time to time.
MoreAmazing vegetarian options and atmosphere. Staff are very friendly and caring and make you feel really welcomed. Food is outstanding and desserts are to die for. Thank you so much.
MoreGreat venue, good drink selection. Outdoor seating is excellent with seats by the canal, benches on the lower level grass and also extra decking area. Good size inside. Only wish they had a licence to show the football!
MoreFantastic sevice from Philiippa even in the heat she was so proffesional to our Table and others Even the chef was out helping . The other staff on shift were so friendly. We will be booking again. The food was so nice my Ribeye steak was cooked perfectly. Thank you
MoreNice pub with outside table seating along the canal side. It can be a little smelly if the wind blows the wrong way, but thats only happened once for us. Good range of drinks and though I havent eaten there the food looks excellent.
MoreHad a lovely meal here 2 evenings ago, could not fault anything about it. Lovely rustic decor although we sat outside by the canal. Easy parking, very good prompt service (thank you Sarahfood was tasty, plentiful, very well presented and reasonably priced, our compliments to Kai the chef. We ordered the camembert to start, then pork belly and fish and chips. Would definitely recommend eating here and would definitely return.
MoreLovely food, service was good. Toilets clean. Great choice of soft drinks. Wasnt over impressed with dessert, but the rest was lovely
MoreHad a really meal with my friend on the 30th June 2022 The waitress Shidley was brilliant despite the busy atmosphere. Great food great family place definitely recommend it.
MoreGood food and good beers, nice staff and plenty of multi level outdoor seating. There is a large dedicated car park adjacent, but be mindful to sign the parking register at the bar or expect a fine in the post. Bicycle parking is a bit ad hoc, we used the big white iron girder leading down from the street, its too wide for D locks. The attached gate is a possibility, but I dont know how often it is opened.
MoreWe were welcomed kindly by the staff at the malt shovel, even our wet dog was welcomed with a pigs ear. Food and service was great. Kai the chef added an artistic flare to scrumptious Pate which looked nearly too pretty to eat and Kyle and Lucy were attentive to our needs without being too much. Great experience! Also ask for the flower pot desert you won’t be disappointed!
MoreShame i cant give -5. This place should be closed and burnt down. Nearly 1 h waiting for food what was not for human consumption. Unexpectedly chips was very good and the Yorkshire pudding was ok. Rest I wouldnt feed my dog with.
MoreGood food and excellent service
Since Reece (new managerhas taken over the cleanliness has massively improved inside and out. Food is great and staff go above and beyond to keep a happy atmosphere. Animal friendly so there’s always something to have a laugh about. Try sitting canal side and watch the boats. Lovely place to relax.
MoreI met an old friend for a catch up after work at the Malt Shovel. Sat by the bar for a couple of drinks and I was so impressed with how welcoming the barman was. He was very friendly and really made you feel at home. Will definitely be coming back and will try the restaurant next time.
MoreGreat Sunday roast as always 😋Fabulous sticky Toffee pudding too.
Currently here and not many roasts available from 1730hrs.The drinks are well served and the steak I had was really nice! However, seated outside you can see its getting quite run downThe decking and tables are chipped, loose and dirty. Seats have splatters of well aged bird poo too. The outside seated area could really do with a bit of work to improve the image and environment and its a really nice and quiet piece of the world to be seated in.Service was quite mixed, the waitress who served my garlic and cheese mushrooms dropped it on the table and stormed off for literally no reason at all.Two sides were ordered as a main and when asked if they can both be served together, a very sarcastic "yeah yeah yeah Ill try my best" and span around finishing his conversation with a colleague. This pub is dog friendly outside and a section inside only.
MoreBooked family meal here, was very friendly, quick service. Food was hot, fresh and brilliantly cooked. Plenty of parking and allowing dogs on the premises was a bonus.
MoreStrongly recommend.. Very attentive people working their.. Really get the feel that going to work is a fantastic thing. The atmosphere is like a family get together. Food was perfect and service was too. Along with all of this you have a beautiful location.. Your sat on the side of the canal, which supplies lots to look at.. I will be going back ...
MoreGreat location next to the canaldeserts are really tasty
A good night out.Great service, good atmosphere and lovely location. The food was brilliant and catered for gluten free without any hassle. I have to say the food was brilliant and well worth a visit.
MoreLovely pub along Frays River. Excellent service, food was lovely and there is vegan options! Its dog friendly and theres free parking. Im definitely going back. Thank you.
MoreAbsolutely lovely pub. Staff were friendly and welcoming. There was a big group of us and everyone said their food was amazing. The desserts were to die for. Thank you Dan and his amazing team for a lovely evening.
MoreA good sized pub next to the canal, friendly staff. Fantastic sweet potato fries. I would book a table and check when serving food as they don’t always serve food outside. Went here twice, first time was okay, the second time was better and we tried a third (those sweet potato fries), but we were told we couldn’t have food outside and we had our bikes so had to move on. Really does have a nice outdoor area along the canal. Would love to see a few more veggie options.
MoreAverage place. Went here with my friends and expected a better environment as from the photos it looked good but in real there’s a bad scent coming from the lake right next to it.Sat down to have food and got to know that they would serve food after 2hrs from the time I came as they had only 1 chief!Expected better from Malt Shovel as me and my friends walked for 30mts to get there.
MoreBeautiful Pub. Wonderful staff. Gorgeous Sunday roast, fresh ingredients cooked to perfection. Unlimited gravy. Heavenly dessert. The staff can not do enough for you and are very attentive even though its busy.
MoreWeve have often driven 🚘 past and meant to drop in for a bite to eat and drink 🍽🍹outside. Today was lovely and sunny 🌞 so this time we did, and Im so glad we did.Its not just the food that makes a good pub. Its also the staff👨⚕️👩⚕️. Kyle 🧑⚕️ looked after us and the banter was FOC 😆😂Was re-assuring to see the team took Covid seriously. I didnt see one member of staff with their mask 😷 hanging down below their nose, like a lot of places do.We decided to have something different for dessert, so we both had the Chocolate Flower pot. It was delicious 😋We will definitely be visiting again soon.
MoreWhat a lovely place here..the staff were really great, funny and great sense of humor, really made us feel welcome here. Cam here tonight with 8 friends and the food for a pub was absolutely delicious! Fresh and presentation was of a high quality restaurant...little hidden gem here and will surely be back..
MoreFantastic menu, would be great if they added more vegan options for my vegan friends. Their Sunday roast was very good and the portions were generous. The staff is helpful and friendly, highly recommend this place.
MoreWaitresses are so nice! Will definitely be coming again.Burger was delightful, such warm hospitality. Would give 6 for politeness if I could!
MoreNice little pub located by the canal. Was here for lunch with some work friends. Lunch deals are good. I had the Steak and Ale Pie and Chocolate brownie. The pastry on top was nice but the meat was full of fatty bits which was not very nice. By the time I got rid of the fat there was hardly any meat left. Rest of the food was good. Staff are very nice. There is lot of outdoor space and seating. Prices are decent. I would avoid the Pie in future.
