The Lumsden Free House - Bar & grill in North Shore, New Zealand
Happy Hollowee♠️
The pizza we had was delicious, the service was fantastic. Highly recommend
Main hostess is one of the nicest most down to earth person Ive come across in the service industry. If youre a regular she will always ask how you are and make sure youre ok and sorted with your food and beer. Get to know her enough and she will sit at your table and have a laugh with you. Great beer, impeccable service, cheap and cheerful food
Decent pub with good beer selection.
Is their poutine the greatest culinary work of art in history? No.But its very, very good, and everyone who reads this needs to try it as soon as practicable!
Great restaurants went for quiz night with coworkers and had a blast
The Lumsden is my and my partners favourite, its a bit of a walk to get there from where we live, but worth every step!Always great drinks, amazing food and a genuinely warm and nice environment.Staff seem genuinely happy to be there!
Good choice of craft beer and awesome pizza.
Well situated, good service, drinks, food and a pool table. We had a fun night out there.
A great place to celebrate with friends, Rob the manager looked after our group so well. We will be back!!
Run by beer lovers. Come here for pub atmosphere and craft beers and basic pub grub. Great location. It is a good honest basic pub in the Newmarket.
Terrible food and would definitely not go there again or recommend. Told the head chef was cooking and would say he needs more training. Bad experience all round.
Great bar. Good beer and atmosphere. Really worthwhile for a visit
Lively atmosphere and a great range of wines and beers. I was dining in with 16 work colleagues. Tina took fantastic care of us, she is friendly and knowledgeable about hospitality. Tina got our drinks and food orders perfect. The food was great. I had slow cooked brisket which was out of this world. Highly recommended.
Just a quick stop and drink ok place
Not a bad place to gather. Beer prices excessively over priced, more than a classy Ponsonby or Parnell restaurants.
Great beer and food selection. Nice helpful staff. Comfortable outdoor winter seating.
Basic pub grub, good selection of beers, comfortable easy going place. Like it.
Good pub with a wide range of beers. For food its better to go somewhere else.
Really good choice of beersMore vegan options or a bit less fatty food would be awesomeHowever totally nice for a few drinks, can recommend!
These guys say on their social media that they focus on good staff, good beer and good food. Its a tick on all three for us. Really friendly and engaging staff, great beer choices and some absolutely fantastic food!
Saturday night, hours online says 11pm close but we arrived at 9:45pm to a greeting of last calls, and we were not even allowed one quick drink. Weak.
Been coming to the Lumsden since it opened and I love it. The rotating taps are great, especially as they normally have at least one stout. Food is also solid. Service has been great since Rob started and most of the staff there now have been around for ages and are awesome too. Glad it has survived COVID!!! Thanks team!
Amazing place and staff! We were being harassed by some weird guys and went here to escape, the staff were very accommodating and made us feel safe. 10/10 would go back to this place.
Great selection of na craft beers to enjoy in sun. Outdoor seating is next to nice little park.
Great place for your classic pub night-out! Staff members were attentive and friendly, which contributed to the enjoyable experience. Food was delivered to our table within a short time frame, and they were amazing. I highly recommend the mac and cheese bites and the steak. They also have a hot wing challenge which nearly murdered my taste buds, but it was an entertaining experience overall.
Good beer range that rotates often, food is great and very good value. Can get busy after work.
Lovely atmosphere good selection of craft Beer. Food is nice and manly comfort food. Would go back 👍
Awesome place to pop in for lunch and a few beers, always have at least one or two ciders on tap as well. Would highly recommend :)
Great place for a get together, conveniently located in the heart of newmarket. Servers were excellent and the private area is so cozy youd think you were relaxing at home!
Showing up to what looked like an Irish’s pub, I was pleasantly surprised that the night life on a Thursday was more than enough to work with. We came in hot with old friends knowing that this was going to be no ordinary catch up. Beers were spilt and smiles all round matched with a good feed to kick it all off. If you decide to bless this god given pub with your presence be sure to ask for rob. This big burly man had a strong pour but a soft touch with the presentation. Couldn’t have been more pleased with the food, service and staff. End up walking out with a full belly and my head swinging. 10/10 would recommend. Till next time The lumsden.
Food was pretty good and the atmosphere and lay out of the place is great. We went in for the "insane wings" but they were out of stock. Maybe if thats what youre after best to call in and check first.
Great beer and whiskey selection, and superior food to many pubs. Good staff and ambiance. Definitely my go-to pub, reminiscent of bars from back home in the Pacific Northwest. (Portland to Vancouver)
Really great atmosphere and I always love the rotating selection of beers. I had some food this visit and the veggie nachos were unexpectedly loaded! Definitely to share and super yummy.
Have been a couple of times and would thoroughly recommend it for a lunch or dinner and a chance to try great craft beer. You can get tasting racks, with plenty of different taps to sample. Their pizzas are excellent and the curly fry poutine was delicious. Good seating options inside and out. Staff were really friendly and attentive.
We usually come here for any sort of after works drinks since there is a really nice selection of beers, ciders and whiskeys. There is plenty of seating outside as well as inside, with more seating in the back area of the restaurant. You generally head up to the counter to order, both inside and out. They did sometimes come around to take order and brought an EFTPOS terminal when they brought the beverage. The menu changed recently and they had added and readded some items including the chicken waffles. The chicken, waffles and bacon were all quite crispy and the plate had quite a few layers of them. It was then drenched with maple syrup. I really enjoyed it. We tried the cajun wings and they were ok. The flavour wasnt very strong so it was almost like normal fried wings. The honey chicken pizza and the garlic cheese bread (which was pretty much a pizzawere both also quite nice.It is a nice place to come by for drinks and food. The outdoor area is quite nice during summer too.
Great selection of beers. Tried the Black Forest Stout which is low in carbonation and storee in room temperature. We were in two minds initially but it soon was a no brainer once the bartender got us to taste some. The wings pizza and nachos were pretty good too but the one thing that blew my mind away was this little beauty that I found in their vast collection. The North West Petit Luna. Its a hibiscus lime and sour ale, which has by far been the best sour beers I have ever tried. So thanks Lumsden Free House and the very warm, welcoming and friendly staff members who attended us. Cheers
Lovely atmosphere, great range of craft beers + ciders and cocktails. The staff are always really nice.Food is really good too, decent portions.Protip - making a reservation is a good idea as Lumsden is often very busy!
Location: very convenientParking: not sure as went walk from work.Staff: very friendly and considerate to customers needs. Quick on their toesService: good pace lets you enjoy the company and time at the bar.Seating: lot of options from table for 2 to table of 24. Indoor and outdoor seating available on request.Reservations: appreciated and required to avoid waiting timeFood quality: fresh and tasty. Made as per customers requirements.Value for money: a bit pricey but is good place to hangout with mates and family.Overall experienc: Good food, quick service...
Good food, great service, good prices. Reason for 3 stars - ordered lemon lime bitters but it was absolutely yuck.. Think fry made it with soda/tonic water. Im not used to soda water so found it disgusting.Updated: this time ordered Mediterranean pizza and it took way too long to arrive BUT it was tasty!still 3 stars because of late arrival.
Quiz night is fun, solid menu (the mac and cheese balls are a highlight, the deep fried cheesecake in filo pastry is an experience!), friendly service, plus good choice of beers. Love the book wall out the back and the very funny framed art in the mens bathroom.
Good place for a meal and catch-up - great staff and the food was tasty. They dont do table service so once you know what you want order at the bar and your food/drinks will get delivered to you. We were too full for dessert but the options looked pretty delish so will have to try them next time!
The wings were really nice. We ordered the hot and insane wings. Definitely wouldnt caution anyone trying insane. I had one bite and it took me a long time to recover. My girlfriend on the other hand was able to do them with some effort.
Its a good place to eat out with friends after work. Food is great and serving is generous. Good service and welcoming staff.
This is becoming my new favourite beer place. Very good selection of beer and lots of great food. Seems to always have good atmosphere, but partly because it is busy, so allow some extra time for ordering etc. Even better now that outside is also non-smoking
Best gastropub in Newmarket. Welcoming, neighborly and real. Not trendy and 100% better for not having any weird stylistic interior or decorator created fantasy. When I noted "real" I meant it. This is a signature New Zealand style venue.Welcoming staff and friendly clientele. The beer from the kegs is part of the extensive selection on offer which changes every day. So, you might find a new treat and never be able to get the IPA again.By the way, food is often in shared plates and eaten with fingers.Interesting selection of Hoppsters, Nitro, Dark Beers, Wheats, Ciders, Sours and Ales.
Superb service, food portions are great. My friends had Nachos and Fish n Chips and were very satisfied. This was the second time we had been a here in 3 weeks and it didnt disappoint. Great selection of craft beers and a great crushed apple cider on tap. Was a bit cold though, outside was raining and 12 degrees and windy, the single gas heater only heated the table directly underneath it. The permanently ajar front door didnt help. Cosy and friendly and very attentive and genuinely friendly staff.
We stopped by on our last day in New Zealand and couldnt think of a better send off. The pizza, chicken and waffles, and beer selection were great. Happy 5th Anniversary to The Lumsden!
Great vibe, great staff, great selection of drinks. It’s a really relaxed bar and a great place to take friends for a beer and watch a game. The vegetarian burger wasn’t excellent but it was ok. The pizzas did look great! Next time we’ll have one of those. The best part was the tables on which you can draw! It’s fun for kids and for adults! Really awesome concept.
Great selection of craft beers and a decent menu. Not crazy amazing but a perfectly good pub.
