I love The Last Unicorn. I moved out of state for the past few years, and came back last year. I wanted to go to the Unicorn, so I checked the website, their Facebook, and Google to see the hours, then tried to go there last night. They were closed without hours on the door or any indication that theyre ever open!Whether they are or not I wont make the trip to try again unfortunately. Beware of the posted hours.

This place is much better than it used to be. Brighter interior, new bar, a menu that is inspired and delicious. Cant wait to see what they do next .

Never thought that a small town in Maine would be home to such an amazing restaurant! Not only is the food delicious, the menu is so well rounded with foods both traditional and unexpected, we would have liked to taste everything on the menu if we could eat so much. The stuffed poblano was succulent, the potato pierogi the best we have ever had (and we have had pierogi in authentic Polish restaurants before). The short ribs were falling off the bone, with creamy mashed potatoes, the chicken wings fingerlicking good. All dishes we tried were very flavorful and perfectly seasoned. After eating like kings, what topped everything was the unbelievable cheesecake with pecan praline. The creaminess and flavor of the cheesecake has me now searching for a similar taste bud experience since, but nothing compares even here in my home city of New York! The food quality and menu are only matched by the friendliness and professionalism of the staff, in particular our host and waiter Paul. He took time to explain the items on the menu and detail, had interesting conversation with us about Waterville and beyond, and was a pleasure to interact with.Another big plus is that the Last Unicorn is located at a convenient location on a beautiful plaza with outdoor seating in the spring and summer, where we had the pleasure to dine last summer with an equally enjoyable experience; even though, even if at a different location, we would go out of our way to get there. Well make sure to return every time we are in Maine!

The Last (time I’ll go to theUnicorn RestaurantCall me sentimental, but I used to work at this restaurant during its Hay Day. I remember lines out the door with people waiting on the sidewalk to get in. I remember the food quality always being so high and unique. I wouldn’t call the prices to be exorbitant, rather competitive, but you always had a great evening regardless of how much you spent. Sadly, this is no longer the case. I went to this place last Friday, what a joke! One person, a very nice man was working the front, haggardly wearing the host hat as well as the waiter, busboy, and bartender hat. It’s funny because if all the other restaurants in Waterville that night weren’t overwhelmingly packed (even in COVID), one look at the prices would have made me get up and walk out. Who charges $24.99 for Chicken Parmesan? I can make it for $6.00. I stayed and ordered my favorite Cajun Salmon with basmati rice and a salad. The salad did not come before the meal as it usually does, probably because there was only one waitperson on that evening. The salmon came overdone and dry, but I was so hungry it didn’t matter.I can no longer recommend this place or refer to it as one of my favorites and it breaks my heart. Good luck to whomever is running this establishment. It may do well for now with all the overflow customers (those who really planned on going somewhere else). Once the new restaurant opens inside the new hotel, this place will struggle for sure. The Waterville community can’t afford its prices for the subpar food they serve, and with one person, up front running the show, the service is going to decline. The old cliche is true, "All good things must come to an end." Too bad because I used to love this place!

Our food was good...bacon carbonara, chicken parmesan, flank steak, and fallen eggplant towers. First bottle of wine was out of stock, but the one recommended was Good. Good selection of craft beer. No light bulb over the table. Not very busy probably due to COVID. I suspect the outside seating is nice when weather permits.

I was born and raised in Waterville and the Last Unicorn was a staple local restaurant. Recently moved back after living away for a couple decades and could not wait to go to dinner here. Unfortunately it is under new ownership and they replaced many staples on the menu. Overall the food was average and the prices high. The fallen eggplant was recommend by the server, it was only ok. The pumpkin bread pudding was phyllo not bread. On the plus side, drinks were good and service good. No idea why the new owners are not staying more true to what worked for years. Prices too high for gravity of food served for sure.Update came back for another shot....wose than last time. Poor ingredients, over priced. Why the new owners messed with something that worked is beyond me. Wont be back and do not recommend.

Tonight at The Last Unicorn was a treat. We ate on the newly expanded patio (closing the street so that The Last Unicorn and its neighbors could add outdoor tables was a great idea). The menu was as expansive and varied as usual. The three of us were all happy with everything, from the pleasant and attentive service to the wings and perogies as appetizers, to the entrees. My homemade fetuccine caprese with shrimp was outstanding-- the pasta was substantial and perfectly cooked; the tomatoes and shrimp were fresh and generous in portion. The ribeye my wife ordered was flavorful, properly marbled and huge. My daughter had the shrimp salad, which was enough for dinner and tomorrows lunch. Weve been going to The Last Unicorn since 2007 a couple of times a year most years and have found it consistently good and sometimes very good. Tonight was one of the very good times.

I had a great meal but my mother had the eggplant with marinara sauce that had fine twigs in the marinara sauce. I thought she was being over reactive but when I checked the dish there were bunches of them and I tried to eat one and it was like eating a stick. Turns out they were thyme that should have been removed before serving. The cook never came out to apologise but the waitress was wonderful. I just question the cooks credibility. That is a mistake that a novice in the kitchen would make. I will not go back for awhile hoping that the cook will be replaced. Too bad really because I have had great experiences there in the past.

A friend and I had lunch at the Last Unicorn today. The food was delicious, but when I asked our server why they didnt wear masks, I was told "we take them off inside and then forget to put them back on". I am in the elderly and system compromised group. When our waitress served water, beverages and meals on the table she was only about 18 " away from us. Also, cloth napkins and reusable menus were used. I would not go back there until this virus has passed, if ever. Even after asking about masks, she didnt show concern for us. What a shame!

This will be a bit longer review than done of my others, in part because there was a lot going on the evening we were there.First the food. It was very good. The cheese dip with bacon, amazing. We had the seared tuna - excellent I was told, and crab cakes as a meal; very good but small portion for the money. So the food experience was very good, albeit pricey for Waterville ME.Now the not so good. Simply put, the restaurant was, other than the outdoor dining and social distancing spacing between tables, not following the prescribed pandemic guidelines for service. No servers wore masks, menus were not single use, and were wiped down using the same cloth as other menus, no requirement customers wear masks to their table, paper towels in the bathroom were a standard kitchen roll standing up near the sink, meaning everyone who dried their hands touched it, no contact tracing info taken as far as we could tell. Its hard to point out all this stuff, as the staff was attentive, the chef came out to check on customers (again, without a mask), and the food was good. But we wont go back. We felt uncomfortable. Other may not. I just wanted to point out what our experience was that evening.

A little on the expensive side but so good. Edamame potstickers are a great appetizer. Great wine, atmosphere, and the best bartender waterville has to offer. Rack of lamb and black and white sesame salmon are heavenly. So happy to spend an evening at such a nice restaurant tucked away in waterville with my beautiful girlfriend.

Waitress was pleasant. Food was okay. Perhaps my expectations were too high? Idealistic menu, fell a little flat. Not awful but lacking. Service was slow for few patrons. Salmon was tasty. Drinks were great. If you want fruit, then youll be satisfied. Pass on the brie. Otherwise fresh.

The drink was delicious, the food was just ok and the service wasnt great. We had to ask about our salads 3 times and opted not to get them to go after they were forgotten about. My friend got no side with her entree and I ended up with a side I didnt order. I wouldnt go back.

Worst dining experience in a very long time. When we arrived it was busy but not overrun. We were told it would be 5 minutes. 30 minutes later we were seated, after several others that arrived after us. Upon being seated, we expressed being ready to order as we had a young child with us and wanted to get in and out before she melted down. Again we waited 20 minutes. Other tables seated after us ordered first. Then we waited over an hour for our food. Friends, I ordered a COLD sandwich! The whole dining experience took over 2 hours! My kid was a rock star and made it through the horrific ordeal. But it was just that, horrific. The food wasnt even great. Certainly, not good enough to justify this. The service was even worse. They basically ignored us, and acted like we were bothersome when we inquired about our food. I would rather go to the dentist and have a tooth drilled, than return to this restaurant. The reason this is the last unicorn, is because all the others already went out of business.

Customer service was great. The drink Reggae was disappointing and had an after taste of olives.the blue cheese dressing was overpowered by too many strong herbs in the dressing. The creamy mushroom sauce was great with the rice but on the too dry chicken was not very good. If the person who made what they called Derby Pie was happy with it...they need to try an actual Derby Pie in its birthplace...very disappointing overall.

We were a party of four. The server offered us bread while we awaited our order. 30 minutes later we flagged her down and inquired about the bread. She then hurriedly brought us some without apology. We waited another 30 minutes for our meal. The food was very well prepared and tasty. We didnt have dessert. We were not offered a dessert menu or told what they might be.I dont think we will return as there are better local options at this price range.

It took about 20 minutes for someone to take a drink order, another 10-15 for them to take our food order, but it didnt seem really busy in the dining area with only 1/4 of the tables full. The chicken was dry, as was the dessert. The food was way over priced for the quality and quantity. Also if you want fresh ingredients, probably shouldnt go here.

Food was decent service was great. Lunch portions at dinner time are small so be prepared for that. Also if you want to split your check if you have a party of three or more you have to go to the bar and the bartender does it for you. Would be nice if the server would take care of that.

This place is so good I wish I could give more stars. For central Maine this place has amazingly great food, wonderful service and delicious drinks. I had locally made sausage cooked in a marsala sauce with mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes and peas over restaurant made paparadella pasta. Amazing. If your in the neighborhood looking for really great food try out the Last Unicorn. Expect to pay 15$ to 30$ for entrees.

I dined during lunch time with a friend. I ordered chicken pita with hunin sauce. The chicken breast was dry, and there wasnt much there The pita was full of green lettuce, which is terrific. But there was too much, it was like they were filling up the pita so they could distract from the lack of (qualityingredients. The one slice of tomato was a light pink, almost albino tomato. I wasnt impressed in the quality of the plate for the cost. The pita also had no flavor, wasnt soft or warm as better restaurants serves. The side salad with green goddess dressing was tasty. The decor was nicely decorated for the holiday season. I wouldnt be eating here again.

Food was unremarkable. The zaatar chicken was tasty, the calamari was over battered and bland, and the salads were generic. The service is what got them 2 stars. It was over an hour and half between us sitting and being served, and the service was really inattentive and disorganized.

Party of several, took such a long time to be served about 15-20 minutes for drinks. 45min to hour for appetizers. About 1- 1/2 for our food. Maybe just a bad day, but little disappointed. Arrived at 3:15 slow time and left about 6:00 pm. Food was rather pricey but good. Around $15-$20. I had a Burger with kettle chips, maybe from a bag. I dont like evaluating a place, but there it is. Spent about $225.00 total. I dont think well go back.

Innovative and excellent food; good service; good beer selection (meaning something I really liked).Between the four of us, we had a chef salad—large and varied, with freshly-made dressing; Sesame Seared Salmon, which disappeared off my brother-in-laws plate quickly because it was so good, leaving him surreptitiously scraping the tasty sauce off the plate; Thai Sizzling Catfish—my sister-in-law loved it; and my West Indian Chicken—tasty and fruity, with just a smidgen of heat on the tongue.Dessert for all was a Maple Walnut Blondie, a good portion of baked sweetness with a Maple drizzle and whipped cream. We all agreed it was a good meal, a great meal. All but the chef salad came from the specials menu for tonight, so they are examples of the restaurants best.
