Gastropub with open kitchen, ceramic-tiled dining room with oak floors, and lots of stuffed animals.
Beautiful pub, which is going for the premium vibe. £32 is very expensive for the Sunday roast. I would say go to check it out or for a drink, if in the area, but be aware it is expensive.
A bit pricey but its worth it. The dishes were very tasty and I would definitely return. It was also baby friendly with available high chairs and enough space for a pram.
I had a terrible experience at this pub. I was a guest at the Montcalm and the staff at the hotel highly recommended me to have dinner at the The Jugged Hare. To my dismay I was treated terribly and racially discriminated against by a member of staff and asked to leave because dinner started at 5 and I was 10 minutes early despite there being other (caucasianpeople sitting in the restaurant section already. I was the only black person in the pub at the time, every other person appeared to be having a great time and was being treated well.I left, and returned to the hotel. It is 2022 you’d think these things wouldn’t happen anymore but they do. Because of this I cut my stay at the Montcalm short and left a day early.
Giving 3 stars because the dessert (toffee pudding was out of the world). Steak was over done, none of the specials or key menu items were available. It was disappointing overall.
I think we caught them on a bad day when their service was overwhelmed! It took them 25 minutes to seat us, despite our having a reservation, and when they finally did, theyd run out of much of the menu (including the jugged hare, which was the main reason for our trip!).In the end I had the lamb burger, because I wanted to try the brains. It was a bit disappointing to be presented with a burger on a wooden board - it felt like Id ordered the fussy eaters option! I also couldnt detect any tongue in the tongue gribiche. I think if the burger was deconstructed, served on a plate, and the patty replaced with a lamb rump, theyd be onto a winner.Wed like to return because we feel we narrowly missed out on a delicious meal!
We absolutely love The Jugged Hare. Our last visit was on holiday to London in 2018, and we couldnt wait to return again on this trip. There are some atypical game options (maybe its only atypical for us since were from the US...not sure about availability of game across the UKon the menu which makes for a great change from standard fare. What you see in the picture is all 3 options offered for the Sunday roast special menu: Pork belly, half chicken, and beef roast (double order of the beef roast for our table). The pork belly was outstanding, even coming with a decadent and delicious piece of skin crackling. Every piece of the meal was perfectly cooked...not a single dry or overcooked element - either in the meat or in the vegetables. The Jugged Hare will always be on our list of must-have dinners in London.
Good staff, quick service, limited bar tables so get in early if you want to sit down. Reservations recommended
I went with my girlfriend on 13/08 we had a lunch. The food was amazing and the service fabulous. My girlfriend had an allergy and the manager Nasir (Im sorry if I spelling it wronglook after us very well. He was on top of everything. He recommended few dishes from the menu. Excellent food and customer service.
Excellent Sunday roast, massive portions, nice place, highly recommend.
Had such a wonderful dinner here! Super lovely staff, thank you Artemis!Had beef & pork on the Sunday roast menu, portion was generous and well cooked! Wine was excellent as well. Thanks, will be back ;)
Very disappointingThe beer and the price were not good enough to compensate for the bad service they provide. They very rudely kicked us out of a table because it was reserved even though they had forgotten to put a sign or even say something beforehand and never even apologized. Terrible
A great brunch place, not too much to choose from. But the options are tasty. The size of dish varies a lot. Roasts are good.
The food is tasty and based on the menu, much more interested in using the whole animal than a lot of restaurants. The service was good and there is plenty of choice for drinks. The only down side is the price, where they are charging a lot for what you get.
I use this place for a drink because it is near the Barbican. Very friendly, helpful and professional staff. Quite expensive ( but where isnt in this areaThe dead animals all over the place arent quite to my taste
Very nice place with charming and professional staff. The food is very tasteful with a large range of choices. The meat is superb and the drinks are good. Good proces. Worth a visit
Great food and good price (for the theatre menu). We went for the pre-theatre menu before seeing a show at the Barbican and was a great food and price. A la carte menu looks a bit punchy aimed at the local city bankers.
Extremely good service, wonderful food. A great place to hold a party.
We found this restaurant that is close to our theatre show anything goes and it really is nice and good is great. We had fish and steak dishes and they are both delicious; tasty and very well presented . The service staff are also friendly and offer great ideas. Will recommend to my friends for sure !The bread pudding is just as sweet to end the day before our show!
Food was excellent. Our waiter Gianfranco was attentive, polite and couldnt have done more. 4 stars because the manager was sitting at the bar in trackies and t-shirt and took a while for someone to seat us despite having a reservation. Booked for a birthday and was wondering if I had made a mistake from first impressions. However the food and our waiter saved it!
Decent pub between Moorgate and Barbican. Gets busy and can be slow when serving. Nice garden area on opposite side of road but extremely popular so nor often available seats. Guinness is OK.
Quite a Nice experience, much of a traditional bar.
To get away with charging 32 quid for a roast, you have to make sure its perfect. Sadly receiving two slices of beef, one carrot and a giant Yorkshire is never going to cut it. Even the chicken, which was a massive serve, came with barely any veg. What was on the plate was tasty but come on guys lift your game? Or reduce your prices a tad.
You cant go wrong here. The Jugged Hate is famous for game and has been for years. It earns its reputation. Food is reliably great, usually on the robust and traditional side but always well executed. Service is fast and attentive without being overbearing. It is a good one to take friends visiting from overseas they will get the old Londons vibes they often want.
Mixed Bag. Chicken parfait was excellent. Staff were great and accommodating and it’s a great venue. Unfortunately some dishes were heavily over-salted which was a shame but on the whole I liked it.
Lovely restaurant separate from bar.Food was excellent and the staff helpful and friendly. Lots of great option on menu. Will return for sure.
Highly recommend their sunday roasts. Booking well in advice advisable.Restaurant is full of stuffed animals.
One of the better Sunday roasts Ive had with excellently cooked meat and plenty of tasty trimmings. Sticky toffee pudding after was nice too. Unfortunately gets docked a point as my friend didnt enjoy the veggie option, cauliflower steak, too much. Good service and atmosphere too.
Very good Sunday roast. Amazing staff, love the food and atmosphere.
I went to The Jugged Hare for a Sunday Roast for my birthday. We had a large table for 13 people at the back and had plenty of space, didnt feel cramped at all.The staff we accommodating and checked in regularly re food and drink. The roast is one of the best Ive had (and they did have meat options, vegetarian and a fish option).Great roast option in the City
Ended up coming here after my first choice venue didnt have space and am I glad I did. Even though they were very full, the staff went out of their way to fit me in. The roast beef was one of the best I had in London and I cant wait to come back!
The food here is exceptionally good; easily one of the best Sunday roasts I’ve ever had. The bar area is dog friendly and staff kindly brought ours a bowl of water. Service at the bar was a little slow and confused at times but it appeared at least one team member was new/in training, so allowances should be made. Overall, I highly recommend The Jugged Hare.
Excellent quality of food. Welcoming staff. Classic surroundings. Good elbow space. All dishes prepared fresh and taste great. Thoroughly recommend.
Went on a Saturday a couple of weeks ago at about 14:30 and were able to get in without a reservation for the bottomless brunch. The food was delicious; I loved the heritage beetroot, my venison was gorgeous, and it was maybe the best mashed potato Ive had in my life. Waitress was attentive and vivacious; we felt very looked after and welcomed. The only thing I would change would be adding in a cider to the included drinks on the bottomless brunch, as Im gluten free and wanted to balance the prosecco and bloody Mary with something a little lower percentage! Is it expensive? Yes. But the food is good quality and we had a really good time. Definitely a special occasion visit rather than a weekly pub lunch.
Excellent gastropub!! Good is great - proper scotch eggs and black pudding crickets WOW 🔥🔥🔥 friendly staff, great place for a few beers 🍻
Lovely atmosphere and staff, went for the Sunday roast and for the price-point its pitching itself at, it wasnt nearly as good as it could have been. Our starters (wild boar scotch egg & sourdough with bacon and parsley butterwere nice. The beef was full of gristle, and the Yorkshire pudding had clearly been made at the start of service and kept semi-warm on the side. Nothing majorly wrong here, but its an expensive lunch and for the price (£26 for the roast beefI would have expected a much better standard overall. Id come back and give the a la carte menu a try, because maybe thats where the quality is - the Sunday menu aint it.
Mixed feelings about this place and trying not to let the lack of atmosphere due to stealth lockdown cloud my judgement in this review.Staff were friendly but clearly at a loose end with lack of customers. Nice setting, lacked atmosphere. The Christmas set menu was full of great choices and did not disappoint but at £65pp (plus £3 supp for cheeseit just isn’t worth it.The terrine was tasty, well presented and a generous portion. £14 normally on a la carte. The roast turkey again was sizeable - the sprouts were delicious in cream with bacon bits. Potatoes were delicious but, come on, are we on potato rations?Stuffing and pigs in blankets were lovely. Plentiful gravy, cranberry sauce and bread sauce.Cheese (£12 on a la cartewas decent but over priced. The fourth course was tea/coffee with a mince pie. It would’ve been nice if at these prices the miniature mince pie was restaurant made not out of a box.Great selection of wines available.Toilets are basic and you can smell them at the top of the stairs at the start of the dining floor close to where we were sitting.
Great food and wine list, friendly efficient staff. Socially distanced tables, staff wear masks, clean and safe but still buzzy.
Amazing! We had the sourdough, black puffing croquettes, and scotch egg to start, and then the roe deer and jugged hare for mains. Everything was tasty and perfectly cooked, and the service was excellent.
Lovely gastropub located between Moorgate and Barbican Stations. The decor is very striking; comprising oak flooring, red leather seating and a collection of stuffed and mounted animals.Specialising in game and Sunday roasts, you definitely need to book to avoid disappointment. Even then, however, options sell out and you can be waiting a while in-between courses.A good selection of both beers and wines. I really cannot wait for it to reopen!
Decor is very heavy on the taxidermy and mounted animal heads (deer, rabbits etc.so youve been warned if you dont like that kind of thing! While the establishment is known for its meat dishes, theres a variety of vegetarian and plant based dishes as well.Staff were warm and welcoming and all wearing masks. At least one person in a booking is required to track and trace, but ideally everyone does it, just for the safety and well-being of others.I had the sweet potato cake main (sweet potato cake, grilled broccoli, sweetcorn relish, crispy kale), and it was so delicious! Also had the Smoked Cornish mackerel rillette, which was also very well done.
The service, the ambience the whole experience was just amazing! The food was so delicious! Not to mention how much Dan was so attentive and such an excellent host to me and my husband! It made us go back a second time and book a 3rd table for our next dinner outing for us and the family. Honestly two of the best dinner dates weve had and actually enjoyed that we cant wait to go back and have my family enjoy the same experience. Thank you :)
Unique interior with stuffed animals is not for everyone. Very meat oriented menu with game, birds, steaks. Well presented food as youd expect for the price. Wine pairing suggestions. Good location for a pre show dinner, Barbican Centre around the corner.
We booked this as opposite the Barbican. We cannot fault the service, food or the atmosphere. We went there for a special lunch time celebration meal. All our meals were perfect. The staff were attentive and paid attention to all our needs. The food was fresh well cooked seasoned and to specific dietary requirements. 5* all round. Forgot to take photos of more meals or deserts to excited to eat them. Absolutely want to go again.
Came for the Christmas menu. Lovely decor (though vegetarians may not appreciate the mounted heads on the walls). Great friendly service. The food was great and filling.Came back for the normal menu. Service and food still very good.
The Jugged Hare is right by the Barbican. A very popular and noisy pub. The restaurant does regular gourmet nights and this Suffolk Venison dinner is my first delightful experience. It is held downstairs in their private dining room. There were 5 tables of 8 which made the space a bit cramped for the servers. A bit like dining in a cruise ship.I was unfortunate enough to be seated just behind another person so could always feel the servers squeezing through and rubbing their bums against your back! It was quite exasperating at times.Food was great. The venison themed night paired with 5 different wines are sure to be a hit for wine connoisseurs.Would highly recommend trying it once. Minor irritation is the high admin fee when booking their tickets online.
Lovely place, friendly service. We went there after visiting the Barbican and had a Sunday roast: meat, gravy, veggies and roast potatoes were excellent but Yorkshire pudding was a bit flat and a delicious bavette with mash potatoes.
Ate here are part a deal with the Montcalm hotel. I booked dinner for 8.30 and let them know we were dining as part of the offer. On arrival I was glad we had booked as it was very busy so one might have expected a delay with service, however we were not informed of this and had to let them know we were dining as part of an offer as there is a special menu.Starter was delicious but it went down hill from there. Our main arrived before our wine (we didnt order wine until after starter as received a glass of prosecco at the start of the meal). Desert was nothing really to should about.Service was very slow, had to wait to long to get/pay for the bill. Our coats were collected from the cloak room and dumped on us.I would possibly drink in the bar area but very put off by the restaurant and wouldnt recommend.
Very diverse and gamey menu. Lots of fowl but also a good mix of beef, pork and other dishes including their famed hare which is exactly what it sounds like (a slow roasted hare that is served in a jug or large pitcher with hare blood). They also commonly have a fish dish on the daily menu. Its a great atmosphere and incredible menu. I liked but did not love my meals. In my opinion you go here for the experience first and meals second.
Pretty amazing place for eating some game or hearty British dishes. The daily specials are the star here, great flavour and big portions. The environment is quite nice, kind of takes you out of the city and looks like a modem countryside restaurant.
I think this is a great place. Its very unique and is different to other pubs but I think that adds to its flair. They have a great selection of beers, spirits wines and soft drinks. There is a great restaurant as well and the staff are great.
