Art & archaeology museum with prehistoric to modern collections, including the Dead Sea Scrolls.
It is simply incredible how much archeology there is in Israel. This is a world class example of a national museum. The archeology exhibition does a great job of taking you from 750,000 years ago up until about 700 years ago. This is a feat of science communication that is very had to do well.Just as fascinating and interesting is the synagogue route. This is something that you shouldnt miss. You feel like you can travel the world in 100 meters by actually being inside of these houses of worship. Not to miss!
A wonderful surprise! I can write about all that i found interesting, but would need to weite an encyclopedia long note, If you come to Israel, it should be a must stop
They have a dead Sea Scroll exhibit and an amazing outdoor replica ofThe Temple mount and surrounding area in Jerusalem from ancient times
Very engaging. Lots of artifacts found in archeological excavations and a great, large scale model of second temple Jerusalem.
This was a favorite stop of many in Jerusalem. I recommend making this a first stop to see the model and get an idea of the layout of the old city before you start to explore. The exhibits are amazing and lunch in the restaurant was exquisite!
Fantastic exhibits. Really enjoyed the archeology tour, Judaism collection, and model of the second temple.
Arrived to find out it closes in an hour. No offer to reduce price because of it. Really wish I could have gotten a a view to decide if I want to recommend to friends or try to go ourselves another time. The reduced price is a nice courtesy they should offer.
Very nice museum. It may seem to be a bit expensive for tourists, but it is worth visiting.Huge collections of antiquities, art, and sculptures as well as the manuscripts of the Dead Sea
We went to see the Aleppo synagogue exhibit. It was amazing and we were very impressed. We after decided to walk through the Judaica collection and as always loved the collection. And then a delicious lunch in the cafeteria.
We had a tour by a guide called "the Museum Guy" he is highly recommended. He brought the museum to life. He has a wealth of knowledge about all the exhibits. Look him up on google and book your tour.
Gorgeous museum, very modern. Best thing is the story time and art for kids, every Thursday afternoon at 5. Free admission! In English! Its the best kept secret in the city!!
Spent time with the impressionists and then moved on to Canaanite and biblical era archaeology. Never enough time or energy to do everything. Nice that the cafe was operating on Saturday. Their food is very good.
The museum section for the Dead Sea Scrolls is excellent. In the fine arts section there is a very good collection of pre impressionist and impressionist paintings.
Wonderful artifacts and stories, incredible finds on display from all of history in the land. It would help if there was a clearer route to follow, we were regularly confused as to where to go next.
This is a world class museum with artifacts dating back to iniquity. From the Dead Sea scrolls to sculptures from Rodin and Anish Kapoor, to artifacts from earliest history of the region, this is a must see when visiting Israel. There are amazing restaurants shops on sight so youll want to spend the day.
Interesting experience. No photos allowed in viewing Dead Sea scrolls. The Dead Sea Scrolls were at the Exploteum Museum, Mobile, AL for 95 days beginning 20 Jan 2005. I volunteered as a docent. Now I get to see some again today, 29 Aug 2022.
This museum is on of the best in the world... absolutely unique and beautiful. The dead Sea scrolls, the model of ancient Jerusalem, the archeology section, the synogogues, the sculpture garden with its views of Jerusalem are all spectacular
Huge! We didnt have time to see everything, will definitely come again! Great exhibitions in international standards! The place is like a maze, we got totally lost, they could use some signs and better maps
Stunning, wide variety of pieces of art, from Paleolithic to 21 century.Easily can be considered the best art museum of Israel.
Big beautiful museum with all cind of expositions. From old Egypt to the modern art.Nice restaurant as bonus
The Israel Museum in Jerusalem is a great experience to visit. Huge place with a lot of exhibitions. I highly recommend to visit the Shrine of the book where you can find a significant exhibition of The Dead Sea Scrolls and Qumram.
We reached there late, just 1 hour before closing time so was not able to see much thing. The Musuem people asked us to leave by 4 45 itself.I suggest if you are planning go to the Musuem be try to have enough time.Where we went it was looking good and they have maintained it well.
A huge museum with a lot of exhibits. In addition to thematic halls with the history of Jewish culture collected from all over the world, there are exhibits with the works of impressionists, post-impressionists, national artists, modern art and temporary expositions. Separate attention deserves mini-layout of Jerusalem by the times of the second temple.
If you are interested in how humans developed comfort in life and how the things evolved even at macroscopic level. I would highly recommend you visit the three floors museum. You can click photos but not to much. If you find yourself lost in the museum there are security people in every section of the museum. You can find some screens playing videos. There is library inside which now restricted entry due to COVID19 situation.
Beautiful Museum in Jerusalem, you will get a lot of fun to visit museumThe Israel Museum (Hebrew: מוזיאון ישראל, Muzeon Yisraelwas established in 1965 as Israels foremost cultural institution and one of the world’s leading encyclopedic museums. It is situated on a hill in the Givat Ram neighborhood of Jerusalem, adjacent to the Bible Lands Museum, the Knesset, the Israeli Supreme Court, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Its holdings include the world’s most comprehensive collections of the archaeology of the Holy Land, and Jewish Art and Life, as well as significant and extensive holdings in the Fine Arts, the latter encompassing eleven separate departments: Israeli Art; European Art; Modern Art; Contemporary Art; Prints and Drawings; Photography; Design and Architecture; Asian Art; African Art; Oceanic Art; and Arts of the Americas.Among the unique objects on display are the Venus of Berekhat Ram; the interior of a 1736 Zedek ve Shalom synagogue from Suriname; necklaces are worn by Jewish brides in Yemen; a mosaic Islamic prayer niche from 17th-century Persia; and a nail attesting to the practice of crucifixion in Jesus’ time.[2] An urn-shaped building on the grounds of the museum, the Shrine of the Book, houses the Dead Sea Scrolls and artifacts discovered at Masada. It is one of the largest museums in the region.Jerusalem mayor Teddy Kollek was the driving spirit behind the establishment of the Israel Museum, one of the leading art and archaeology museums in the world. The Museum houses works dating from prehistory to the present day in its Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Jewish Art and Life Wings, and features extensive holdings of biblical and Land of Israel archaeology.[2]
The Israel Museum is a great destination to visit when in Jerusalem. It is a fun activity to do alone, or in a large group with other people. I would differently recommend visiting this place to anyone who is in the area. I personally enjoyed my time here.
A very interesting and beautiful museum. The permanent exebition, collections and the changing ones are very good made and arranged. Very good place to visit when you are in Jerusalem.
We absolutely loved this museum. We got there late and was only able to spend about 45 mins in the museum itself. We spent a lot of our time viewing the amazing model of Old Jerusalem outside. We easily could’ve spent hours there. Got to see so much and we only seen about 1/3 of it. Definitely want to go back one day.
There are about 7 exhibition hall with constant and temporary exhibitions, small park, open exhibition - Jerusalem in the second Temple period and Shrine of the Book. Here is kids hall with cognitive exhibition and plays. It really doesnt many museums in Israel which have kids ground. I didnt take, but recommended take a headphones. It will make your visit interested, because almost each exhibit has audio comments. I recommended to visit museum every citizen and guest of Jerusalem.

The museum covers nearly 50,000 sq. meters and attracts 800,000 visitors a year, including 100,000 children who visit and attend classes in its Youth Wing. Among the prizes awarded by the museum is the Jesselson Prize for Contemporary Judaica Design, which recognizes outstanding design of Jewish ritual objects. Winners include Moshe Zabari (1990).
The experience was great. The audio commentary device provided with the tickets is really helpful for someone interested in more details than a casual visit. Also inside the campus, one can find a nice vantage point into the city of Jerusalem from the top of a hill.
One of the most amazing museums around. It is modern, well set out and has the most incredible artefacts form the Near East, extending back prehistoric times. It is set our chronologically and is well signposted. The site has a cafe, museum shop and plenty to see. Dead Sea scrolls are even here!
Absolutely fascinating with beautifully presented exhibits and highly knowledgeable staff. The Shrine of the Book guided tour is a must. Could spend a week there easily
Very nice museum with wide range of archeology collection and expositions indoor and outdoor. The museum is so big therefore make sure you have time in abundance to visit this place. I was amazed how carefully and reverently they cherish the Dead Sea Scrolls. The ancient Jewish manuscripts found in the Qumran Caves in the Judaean Desert from Second Temlple time. There are also the Rose park and Knesset nearby.
A very nice museum, worth the price. 54NSL for an adult. Many exhibitions and not so many people. I love the whole arrangement, everything is in order, clean and neat. Audio guide is available in English, French, Spanish, Hebrews, Chinese and etc. The only problem is the other vision than English might not that complete and in good order. The biggest pity is that the visitors are not able to see the Dead Sea scrolls, they are hidden in underground. But other things are great.
Great museum! With large collection and exhibits worth exploring and will keep the curious tourist for a few days. The archeology halls are full of interesting treasures and so is the ethnography. What we like the most are the temporary exhibitions of art and design.
Not big but also not small Museum. The main purpose of it is to show expositions around the Jewish culture and the Jewish area of habitat. You can find here Egypt archiology, modern art, Jewish relics, interactive kids rooms, open park of sculptures, and lots more. In combine with handicap accessibility and modern museaums solutions, a great place to spend the day.
A wonderful place to visit. You need atleast more than 4 hours to carefully visit all the exhibits. Its worth spending half a day in this place that is rich in history. The Art section is also very interesting.
Incredibly complete collection of artefacts in relation to Israel. This museum is HUGE. One can easily spend a day there as there are several themed galleries. As they are accessible individually, you can easily skip those that you have less interest for.You can access the museum by car (parking availableor simply come by taxi as many stand ready at the exit to get you back home.Photos are prohibited in the galleries.
This is a wonderful museum. As a first-time visitor to Israel, it taught me so much! It covers ancient times to contemporary art. You definitely will need several hours to see all of it: they also have restaurants and cafes when you want to take a break. Of course, seeing the Dead Sea Scrolls and the striking complex in which they are housed was a highlight.
My wife and just spent an amazing 2.5 hours going through just ONE part of the Israel Museum. We lead groups to Israel from the States often, but most times only have time for the scale model of Jerusalem and the Shrine of the Book when we visit here. So today we came by ourselves specifically to see the archeology section (12), and we were NOT disappointed! They do a wonderful job walking you through history and enabling you to SEE things with your own eyes you have only read about! Enjoy some of the photos. (Which are allowed as long as they are not flash.)
Wonderful and most informative museum covering long history of Israel. Really worth spending a whole day to see the extended premises and exhibits. You can see complete historic synagogues moved here from remote countries. The Dead Sea Scrolls found in Qumran Caves in Judean Desert also attractive to visit in a special building of the Museum. There is snack bar to have quick bite and rest a little before continuing the tour. The video guide is a must for those who wish to understand the details shown here. Highly recommended for every visitor to Jerusalem.
This is the best museum in Israel and one of the best museums in the world. Its worth a day to visit. Get lost in archeology and not waste time in what you do not care about because there is a lot to see. Recommend archeology and artifacts collection from the world including amazing masks. And modern art. And wonderful temporary exhibitions. Come and see in the sculpture garden the work of James Turrell (you can get around)
One of the best museums I’ve ever seen although I’m not religious at all! The Dead Sea scroll and the modern art and exhibition. Really worth spending a day staying if not days. Really recommend!
By far the best museum in Israel, absolutely a must visit if youre in Jerusalem.I particularly recommend the archeological section - it takes you from the earliest history of humans in the Levant until the ottoman rule over the land of Israel. You can spend hours upon hours there and still have more to see.
Loved my time at this museum! There is a wonderful outdoor art area that took me by a very pleasant surprise. The museum itself is massive. I spent about 2 hours inside and didnt get to see everything I wanted to. Awesome place to get lost for a few hours.
This is a must visit museum if you are keen to learn about Israeli ancient times and also get a chance to review many different aspects of Israeli society and its development across decades. The section on fashion is unique. You need at least 4 hours to view all the museum, maybe even more time. What really surprised me was seeing many Chinese tourists spending time in sections on the Dead Sea scrolls and other purely authentic Jewish exhibits.
I just spent 6 hrs visiting with my wife at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The site is so large and contains various fields of interest that we saw only a fraction of it.You can see the history of mankind and prehistoric objects to see and learn of our evolution. Also, other interesting sections on Sigmund Freud and modern art.The museum of book (Shrine of the Book), most interesting to see how the Dead Sea Scrolls were conserve for some many years and what they tell us about the Jewish people, amazing.
In this museum u cam see a lot of history of Israel. Really incredible. If stay some days in Jerusalem, u have to go to see for sure. There are a lot of historical artifacts: statues, mosaics, paintings, from different periods from the Phoenicians to the to the Greeks to the Romans, up to our days.
The museum has a ton of incredible artifacts, art, and models important to Jewish culture. I found the models of Synagogues from different parts of the world especially interesting, as well as the sculpture garden. I wish I’d spent more time here. Go in the morning and spend at least half a day in this museum, it’s totally worth it!!!
