Charlemont House, Parnell Square N, Rotunda, Dublin, D01 F2X9, Ireland, Cill Chainnigh
Gallery containing the reconstructed studio of Francis Bacon and a strong collection of French work.
Nice gallery with modern art as well as impressionist masterpieces by Monet, Manet and Degas plus Francis Bacon studio and collection. There was also a temporary exhibition of childrens paintings. It is a rather small gallery but the admission is free and it is definitely worth visiting it. Check the opening hours before coming in (I think it is closed on Mondays).
2022 update: A much more relaxed visit. The gallery is really beautiful. And if you happen to be there at lunch time, stop at the café downstairs: one thing on the menu (not joking, but that one thing was one of my best meals in Dublin ever.PAST review: Wonderful gallery, definitely a must-see and a must-return. My latest visit was spoiled by noisy attendants, restlessly waking around or moving on their chairs — even worse, 10 minutes before closing time they starting shouting to get all visitors out, responding rudely when I pointed out that the official closing time was 6 PM: "It isnt! Its 5:50!" an unnecessarily angry man responded. Never happened to me before, whenever it happened to me to be in a gallery or museum near closing time, I have always been kindly invited to complete my round as quickly as possible, not almost kicked out 10 minutes in advance!
Our group had a fabulous visit. We had a lovely lunch in the resturant with everyone opting for the cheese and crushed baby potato toasties. They were delicious. We were then met by our lovely guide Tony who showed us the beautiful stained glass then the Francis Bacon studio. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the visit many thanks Tony for sharing your knowledge and looking after us so well.
Fantastic place to spend a few hours 👍....
Great gallery, small and very accessible, cafe had lovelycoffee. The only drawback was an attendant in the gallery was playing a game on his .mobile phone and the constant ping was very distracting from it
museum is not very huge but lots of wonderful pictures & they have brilliant classical music concerts on Sundays 12-1pm ... every time different professional performers...today we met a violinist Anna Cashell & harpist Aisling Ennis...had a wonderful hour!!! ( the entrance is free but tickets need to be prebooked)
One of the best small galleries in the world. Masterpieces of French impression along with Irish masters like Jack B Yeats and Sean Scully. Also includes Francis Bacons studio.
Quite small but really interesting collection of 19th, 20th and 21st C art, Irish and European. They could make more of the history of its origins, that is glossed over a bit. Its also a lovely, calm building, quieter than the National Gallery. Its free, so its worth a wander even if you only have 20 minutes. The cafe at the moment is really good- short menu, but good (vegetarianfood.
Francis Bacon studio very interesting and remarkable collection of impressionist paintings but the highlight has to be Harry Clarke’s stained glass work The Eve of St Agnes- soo beautiful, I was impressed!🎨
Havent been to the gallery since a secondary school trip. The gallery is beautiful, bright and welcoming. Francis bacons studio should be seen by everyone. Bones in the attic was truly inspiring thank you ladies!!!
Great Gallery! Free entry. Has Francis Bacons studio (workshop- cool to see!
Beautiful spot. Free and relaxed and some beautiful art. Gorgeous old Dublin home and, when I visited, a really sweet local childrens art exhibition. Some beautiful Irish work and the quirkiness of Bacons studio.
This was the first pub that we tried real Irish Guinness, the taste was so different from what we have in the UK, looks very old in history, nothing much has been altered, great place, very busy.
A wonderful way to while away the hours when on a short stay in Dublin. It is fascinating to see how the concept of a modern gallery flourished when it is carefully nurtured.
Great small museum. Francis Bacons section and reconstructed studio are very interesting. The temporary childrens drawings exhibition is not to be missed!
The highlight had to be the artists Moores painting . It captured your attention on entering the gallery . It was very beautiful.
We put this in our top ten usual things to do in our video on you tube under the channel of Eat Walk Learn. Free and totally unexpected, the smallish collection has a big bang. Youll find a few masters, but the real joy in the museum is the glass window exhibit followed by the whole Francis Bacon suite. They recreated his entire studio, down to cataloguing the dust! Its fun to think about how a genius could work in such mess. Maybe theres hope for me! Anyhow, watch our video for the nine other unusual things in Dublin that we recommend. Youll be quite surprised. And dont forget to visit the Memorial across the street.
Easily my favourite gallery in Ireland - though I was never a Bacon fan before, the restoration of his studio and the counter-opposing study give an insight to the life/work of one of the great 20th century artists. But mostly I go for the Harry Clark leaded-stained-glass display, and the two Rodin statues.Superb.
Quick visit this time, enjoyed browsing in their lovely bookshop. Its a really interesting space, something to suit all ages at a very affordable price. I enjoyed a tasty lunch in the cafe, will be back to explore more.Dorina H
It was a beautiful calm experience. My Son has Austism and was a bit hyper but disturbed no one .The Staff kept a professional eye on him .We had a great time .Beautiful Memories.
Nice for an hour or two to get a take of early 20th and late 19th century art in Ireland. Set in a beautiful building, lots of seating to rest and not nearly as busy as the national gallery. Interesting to see the connection in society at the time and what could have happened to the Hapenny Bridge!Interesting exhibition of Francis Bacon and his studio and some modern art. As someone who doesnt normally go to art exhibitions, it was most enjoyable. Admission free.
Always a special place to visit, great Paddy Graham exhibition on at the minute. The old favourites are there like the stained glass pieces and Francis Bacons studio. My daughter loved the interactive part where you learn more about the collection of items in the space. Highly recommended and the bookshop is irresistible!
If you like Francis bacon, its a must
Great historic building.wonderful art,Houses a great John Constable collection, whilst alongside modern and contemporary arts also... beautiful.
A lovely art gallery with some nice paintings. Just the right size for an hour or two visit.
I love this gallery. Providing a huge range of fine art and always interesting new arrivals.
Second time to visit the restaurant here. Good coffee, good grub and nice staff. They cater for all diets and most tastes and its not too expensive either. The gallery itself is always worth a visit and is easy to get to. An important cultural spot still standing all these years on.
Interesting gallery with some modern Irish arts.
A very recommendable gallery. Just fitting size for a few hours visit. Free admission. Mostly modern art, but I do think the collection is enjoyable for every art lover. The stories behind Hugh Lane and the beautiful Charlemont House are interesting and worth learning. There is a café and a bookshop. The café is especially pleasant.
Enjoyed thoroughly my visit to the Gallery. The location is beautiful and pristinely kept. The collections are very interesting. I really loved Francis Bacons art studio...it is really worth a visit.
Free entry for public, good for people who understand art. Not suitable for families with small kids. Paid street parking available around the Rotunda hospital. Has toilets.
I was impressed, I didn’t know that the gallery has Monet and Degas! Amazing. Nice gallery plus Francis Bacon studio and collection. I loved that. Has to be visited.
Huge surprise. I could see few iconic imperessionist paintings including Degas and Monet, but biggest treat was workshop of Francis Bacon and his works.
WHAT a great gallery. I went in just to sus it out for my tour guests, and was wowed immediately. All forms of art from Harry Clarks stained-glass work to Agusta Rodin and many many impressionists too.I could have stent hours there - alas I was called away by work.N.B. like most Irish galleries the Hugh Lane is free. With lovely chatty informative staff at front desk too.
Beautiful gallery of art and a top notch cafe - a nice walk from central Dublin was well rewarded with this fantastic museum quality gallery filled with both Irish and international artists of great acclaim.
Not there for years.good to see up grading of building. Hugh would have loved that! Cafe lovely.soup yummy and a wander around old friends.scully bacon etc. People fussed when the state paid 1 million for tatty artists studio!! I took inspiration and went home to make art in my own messy studio!!.
We stumbled across this museum because the Writers Museum was closed, and were so happy that we did. Dublin was very lucky to have a patron like Hugh Lane. The modern art is stunning. So many surprises. And the building is architecturally stunning.
What a wonderful museum. Irish artists (Francis bacon, jack yeats etcplus some superb french impressionists. This Hugh lane had great taste and huge courage in buying the impressionists.
The Francis Bacon room is just amazing, his studio is in the gallery 😍. I saw the Hara K Bell 🔔 beautiful. His art is conceptual, not my thing but hey, the bell was cool af 😎. A thing of beauty created from weapons of death. So its deep and moving. I dislike those old paintings of the rich, the eyes 👀 freak me out. Its like Instagram in the 1500s except your filter was a fella with a paintbrush. Heaven forbid a female could be just as good, thank goodness for some changes. Anyway the gallery is cool. Go if you like that kinda stuff. Or if youve never been to an art gallery, its a good start.
Was over due a visit to The gallery. I enjoyed the art on display plus seeing Francis Bacons mews/workspace from his mews in London .
Incredible space and collection. Francis Bacon studio is a gem. Must visit for any art lovers.
Really beautiful free art museum in Dublin. Larger then expected with an extensive collection from Irish and international artists
Very nice gallery free of charge and with lot of interesting paintins and artAlso includes a small shop for mainly books. And a café which unfortunately was closed when we were there.
Art Gallery housing paintings belonging to the famous collector and bequeathed to Dublin city. Theres a sizeable collection, featuring a large smattering of modern art, impressionist, nineteenth and twentieth century portraits. Also on show is a permanent exhibition on eccentric British painter Francis Bacon as well as temporary ones of present day artists!
Lovely art gallery at top of Parnell Square. Interesting selection of paintings. The history of the gallery is also interesting. The original plan was to build it on a bridge across the Liffey. Some beautiful stained glass by Harry Clarke. Entry to the gallery is free, and you can make a voluntary donation of you wish. Currently it is compulsory to wear a mask while you are in the gallery.
I was happy to see the Bacon studio recreation. I understand its place in Dublin is debatable but it was a chance to see it and I wouldn’t have come to the gallery otherwise. A similar thing has been done to Margaret Olley’s studio in Sydney when it was moved to Tweed Heads. Really good to see especially as it was where Melvyn Bragg interviewed him for the South Bank show. They should also use some of the Syvester interview from the sixties. The paintings they have are far from Bacon’s best but hard to compete with the Tate Modern and Bacon was never really connected in his work with Dublin. Like Joyce, these ex-pats never left much before they left, so the museums struggle. To get the Kensington studio is an achievement and a drawcard. The other work in the gallery is interesting too with some good portraits, a couple of Rodin sculptures and a modern exhibition I didn’t care for. Lovely building and nice to spend time in.
Great place. A must-stop if visiting the museum. Clean food prepped before your eyes. Lovely location with pleasant and efficient staff. I loved everything.
Free Entry. Great art from Monet, Manet, Degas and even including works by Francis Bacon inuding his actual studio he painted in
The Francis Bacon studio was really well reconstructed and impressive. A small selection of other works but nicely curated. Upstairs had some modern exhibitions. Overall exceeded my expectations. Would recommend!
The gallery, free to visit, includes some impressive works of art especially from 1800 onwards, including some contemporary works by international artists. The centerpiece is a reconstruction of Francis Bacons study, and an exhibition of some of his works.
