The Hollow Tree at Oxford - Restaurant in Noorder-Paarl, South Africa
Yes. Back to the old name Oxford Arms.Great Venue with excellent beer and food.Staff put up with a lot from our group... Even after the last round... We still had a few more. Highly recommended!!
It is no longer part of Hollow Tree but still a very good venue. Back to the old name of Oxford Arms. This was an institution in the Durbanville area and looks like it will regain that popularity. Good food , good beer selection and very attentive staff. Outside seating is the best in the area. Go as a couple or meet with friends. Had a great afternoon.
Brilliant food, beautiful scenery and good craft ciders and beer on tap
Its nice but not great nice food but overpriced
Their food is absolutely divine and the place cozy and warm with the fireplace. Prices are reasonable as well
Service was very good food not what I expected been here before and the food was better
Good food just sorry no Pizzas but good value for money a nice setting
Went there for their breakfast special yesterday something has changed. The table cloths were dirty from the night before and there were no side plates on the tables. Asked for soft eggs got hard. Food was not as good as it was three months ago very disappointing
The vibe is amazing, it is a typical pub atmosphere. The food is simple yet delicious, it is typical pub food. Steak , eggs and mash or pork tjops and mash are just to name a few of the dishes. The staff are friendly and helpful. They have a very nice variety of local craft beer and ciders.
Great food and lovely setting.... Would recommend this place for a good food and time out with friends
Really nice atmosphere. The food is not too pricey. You can book tables. It has tables inside and outside depending on what you would prefer. Would recommend if you want to quickly grab a bite and eat and also for breakfast with family and friends
Good meal at a reasonable price and will be back for more. Sirloin steak nice and tender and they got the medium to rare right. Have a nice fire going for the cold winter days and it is raining on Election Day, so was a good choice for lunch.
It was lovely main course but dessert big let down awfull malva pudding dry &hard. custard was nice but i had ice cream it wasnt vanilla ice cream it was cheap sorbet.pity.
Really good breakfasts but their dinner options arent that great. Good outside smoking area
Always the best experience in town, most affordable breakfast with excellent service, cant find better priced meal anywhere! 👍🏻 👍🏻
Hollow Tree has a cute outside area at the back, perfect for a Sunday breakfast in the shade. Our breakfast was well priced, delicious and we had great waitrons.
The food, good average meals. They also have a breakfast special reasonably well priced. The bistro. Clean, organised. Small areas. Average.
I would honestly give my experience a negative mark - it is a cute place however, the crowd it attracts shows something different. It was my first experience there and I sat down - quickly, a customer started telling me/ giving me a sermon on "white supremacy".... I SPECIFICALLY STUDY ANTI-OPPRESSION & ANTI-RACISM... I do not want to hear people talk this way. All in all, knowing that this individual is a regular (and is actually a friend of the ownersI will not be back. AND I will not ever tell any of my friends or family to attend. I hope that someone in management addresses racism both by customers and by in house. It is unacceptable. End of story.
The Hollow tree was great. The waitress was very pleasant. The general ambience lovely. To add to that the beer prices were very affordable.
Food was excellent and so the service. Will definitely visit again!! Tanx you so much!
Must say its a very nice place with everything from food to drinks happy people makes a happy evening
On Saturday night the bartender in the smoking section, Stephanie, was just lovely. Funny, attentive, and just a pleasure to be around. Lovely bar, fabulous restaurant.
Really good place to get camel thorn beer, representatives come around every 3 weeks to keep the pipes clean resulting in a good well maintained delivery system for high quality beer.
Looked like a nice place. Sat outside it for about an hour ( dont ask why). Wasnt too busy. Would like to go inside some time. There were some children outside with sticks, which was pretty scary - they looked like a cult. Im sure the guy watching the cars will keep them at bay though - all good
absolutely shocking, i was verbally abused by the staff, manager was no help at all, she actually backed her rude, disrespectful, impolite, aggressive waiter. needless to say, i would not recommend this establishments to anyone. it is an absolute joke.
The service was lacking urgency as we waited 20min from the moment the waitress took the order for COFFEE only. I was wondering how long it took to prepare water, the ingredients for the coffee and how long it took to walk back.At the time i was thinking to have an early supper from there as well...needless to say though...Very poor service indeed.
They have nice beer and the food is piping hot when it gets to you. Just had trouble waiting to be seated and our orders to be taken. Enjoy the old oak hollow tree a bit more because the venue a bit bigger and they make fires to keep people warm.
I am lost for words and there is no exageration to this review.Arrive at restaurant this eve, bikers party in full swing. Sit down to a stained tablecloth. Menu I am handed is covered in sticky residue. I swap it out myself for another that I have to clean with a serviette. There are gnats flying about the beautiful proteas on the table. The waitress (was served by her at Tygervalley branch last weektakes the order. Everything I ask for I am reminded is extra. The only salad on offer is a "green salad." Can you add feta I ask and give it a greek salad twist? "I will ask, but it will be extra." Can I have water please? "It will be extra due to the water restrictions."In the mean time a fire is being lit in a 30m2 room and starts smoking us out. Positive thing I reckon, because maybe the gnats wil do a runner and I can talk without have to fear one will fly into my mouth. I keep waiving them away likeca plane steward at Cape Town international (maybe orange glow sticks would have helped).A trio of sauces are placed on the tables. All three caps have old sticky residue on them. I clean them only to sit with an oily residue on my palm where I touched the plastic bottles. The chicken fillet burger arrives. I have to go and look for salt and pepper on the condiment rack. Only pepper is to be found. Waitress no 2 offers to bring some. On second bite of chicken it is clearly raw, soggy, pink and cold to be exact. The waitres (similar to my experience with her last week at Tygervalley is MIA), so resort to asking the guy stokingvthe fire to call the manager. She profusely apologises and offers to take the meal off the bill.In the mean time three of the bar crowd spills over into the dining room, where we are the only dinners. The two women, swearing like there is no tomorrow, proceeds to tell the guy how they need to sell him some vegetables (must be a biker party / networking event). The guy in the vilest possible language (referencing female body parts), merely chats away to these two potential suppliers. I turn around and say, "is that really necessary." The women duck for the door. The guy, clearly still sober, to his credit apologises saying he did not see anyone sitting. The smoke from the indoor fire was bad, but no cloud hung around to make us invisible.I ask to see the manager again. She arrives. I invite her to sit down. Very very politely I explain the shocking chain of events. She cannot be accountable for the guests language, but can certainly have a quite word with them. It quickly becomes clear she is trying her best, but with two kitchen staff and two waiters, she is plugging a sinking ship. Another person / staff member arives and just interups the discussion I am having with the manager. Then like a ghost, the waitress arrive with the rescued chicken. Two pieces on a side plate. Yes, thats it. The original plate with its barely touched contents are long gone. She polutely asks, "is everything OK?" I look at the manager, she looks at me, the waitress looks at us. A moment of akward silence....The owner it turns out is on site, sitting outside with guests. Probably having a drink himself with the part crowd.I ask for the bill. Needless to say no credit for the chicken burger as promised. I pay the bill in full and leave. No manager nor water to apologise or at least politely smile. All of this in under an hour. It is barely 7pm....Outside I chat to the parking attendant and ask him if this is really a Jerry Springer show or am I in the twilight zone? His response: "I have to be honest know, at least three to four customers a week complain and say they will never be back. And you know sir, it means I get no tips."I give this gentleman a tip and drive away, excited to get home and review this disgracefull Durbanville dive.
Great small pub vibe. Good food, friendly staff and quiz nights on Thursdays. Definitely worth a visit. And theres a wide range of beers om tap available as well.
Service was good, food is good, theres quiz nights there on Thursdays and they have about 9 beers on tap. All in all, great fun
Pub quiz night was fun! Food was good, service ok. Would recommend
The Restaurant has got 2 Dining Rooms, 2Bars 1 inside and 1 outside garden area outside a tent area for watching sport. The following draught beer, Paulaner, Guinness, Windhoek, Castle and castle light, and black label, camelthorn. Craft beer. Jack black, CBC, Johnny gold, pumpkin ale, naked Mexican, liefsman fruitless. Various ciders, whiskeys, brandy, rum, vodka, gin. Breakfast, pub lunch, dinner. Popular meals, Eishe in,steak, burgers, tapas.
Also known as the Old Oxford Arms. Lovely place. Some days the staff can be a bit faster but their food is always good...
Drink and starter prices are a bit high and limited. On a positive note, the food is decent and the atmosphere good.
Can get a bargain breakfast but they are guaranteed to get at least one thing wrong, every time, guaranteed.Guess one just puts up with it for the price. Not the kind of place one would actually consider beyond convenience.
A cosy spot, with pub style food. I recommend reading the menu quite carefully, as almost entire sections are only available at the Old Oak branch and NOT at this location. The food is well prepared and tasty, but food and drink here is not cheap, and in my opinion, for the price, not good value, especially with the fantastic selection of other restaurants in the area.
Good pub lunches. Need 1 or 2 more offerings for those banting. Not me, but both guests, and many people cutting out carbs these days. Will be back.
Service was sluggish & both my dishes were cold.Actual venue is great with a fireplace keeping things cozy.
The Bar at the Hollow tree is a good meeting place ,has a good Atmosphere and very efficient Bar men and women .would recommend it to anyone visitor or residents in DURBANVILLE . CHEERS to all at the Hollow tree.
Lovely atmosphere, great food and service
Pleasant ambiance needs better lighting. Served me overdone fish ( Was like rubber). Served my friend beef wrap that was confirmed to be leftovers from the previous days roast... Will not be returning.
Love this spot. Outdoor seating in the sun on a summers day with a beer in hand.. nothing better! Or catch some sports on the TVs... great food as well!!
Lovely atmosphere and good service and the food is up to standard as well.
The Hollow Tree never disappoints. Amazing value for money, super friendly staff. A definite new favourite.
Great local atmosphere and service. Had a nice steak that was made well. Would definitely return
Went for a breakfast special here and have to say was pleasantly surprised at the value for money offering this breakfast was. Will definitely go have breakfast here again one morning.
Typical Pub, great to meet up with friends over a pint and a plat of grub. Enjoy their snack foods too.
The waiters are very friendly, coffee and burgers are average in taste and presentation. Prices are fair of the food and beverages. A fully stocked bar and a desert menu that have the South African favourites on it, can somebody say Malva Pudding? Worth mentioning a fire place kept my visit nice and cozy.
Previously the Oxford Arms Pub, the quaint bar got revamped through the Hollow Tree franchise. With a nice outside space at the back with a second bar, it is a good place to watch sports that isnt in a stuffy smoke filled bar. The menu has some local home-style cooked meals which makes the franchise quite unique, but taste is unfortunately nothing to write home about. Exception being their nice Eisbein served with sourcraut and mashed potatoes.
The Hollow Tree provides an old world tavern feeling with good food and hospitality. Service is mostly fast and efficient. Food tasty and well prepared. Pub lunch specials good value for money.
