Penn St, Penn Street, Amersham HP7 0FA, Amersham on the Hill
Flower-covered 18th-century pub with inglenook fireplaces, original beams and an imaginative menu.
Give this place a miss! Went for Sunday lunch as they used to sell child size portions to OAPs.When the beef arrived it was sinewy and inedible, couldnt cut it even with a steak knife.
Great pub, great food, great beers, great staff.Family run pub in the heart of Penn street, had a chicken burger on the specials board with a crème brulé which was delicious.Would highly recommend
Consistently one of the best pubs in the area. The menu is excellent, and the choice of Sunday roasts are always great. Well located for walkers and people who want to engage in the traditional look walk round the woods with dinner afterwards.
Went at 4.30pm so not very busy. Nice pint and fantastic hanging baskets.
I went, with relatives, for a meal and chat after a family funeral at the nearby Chilterns Crematorium.Booked in advice, with special food requirements for some, it was a friendly, well-organised welcome.I very much hope to go back on a happier occasion and to do justice to their excellent range of real ales.
Very pleasant pub. Helpful and friendly staff.
Very friendly welcome when artived, the gentleman who greeted us was very sweet and patient with my daughter who was deciding on what fruit drink she wished, absolutely amazing chips!! Beautiful garden with the most gorgeous hanging baskets we will definitely be coming back!
Have been here for ages. Always great choice and quality. Good beers too. Staff very attentive
Had a great pint of Badger best bitter. Thanks
Friendly helpful staff. Sandwiches were nice
Visited this pub for a quick drink with my wife. Ive been to better pubs and been to worse. The people on the next table had ordered food which looked good. I dont have any desire to visit again but equally I cant say it was bad. All a bit average in an area where there are lots of good pubs.
Good pub, with quality food and beer. Recommend the sandwiches for lunch. Friendly efficient staff. Nice village location
Typical old fashioned pub. Very quaint. Food and service were excellent
Lovely country pub. Good beers and food. Well worth a visit.
Typical village pub with surprisingly expensive food and drink. Lovely place to sit and enjoy some fine weather and the sound of leather on willow.
Lovely pub, staff were all very welcome but two ladies, Chloe and Alyssa especially so and always are every time I go in. They are great! Can’t wait to go back
Our food took an excessively long time for the starters to arrive (the restaurant / pub was not busybut then it took well over an hour for our mains to arrive. When we then had to go and ask about our foods arrival, our food was immediately brought out.The roasts were stone cold, the vegetables were so overdone they were mush and also cold, everything was tasteless. The burger had obviously been under a hot lamp for too long as it was dry and unappetising.Obviously we won’t be returning.
Nice country pub with friendly staff and good location for a wake close to the crematorium. However we were disappointed with the buffet. We Opted for the more expensive buffet as it was lunchtime and people were travelling a distance to attend. There was not enough food for 20 average appetites.Chicken skewers were dry and sausages were undercooked. Bruschetta inedible.Sandwiches and potato wedges were all gone before some people had their food.
Nice to have a beer watching the cricket on a sunny day. Food offering could have been better on a warm Sunday when you don’t fancy a roast dinner.
Nice food apart from the "crackling" with the pork, which would have resisted an angle grinder!Update: was thinking about another visit today but something awful seems to have happened to the menu. Very few choices and none that Id want!
Friendly atmosphere and bar staff, some of food ok but not much variety ( buffet & very little of it.
Friendly, cosy and welcoming. Unfortunately there was no wi-fi signal inside, which could be a benefit, but I needed contact with a friend 150 miles away and didnt realise the lack of signal.
Tasty food, good service and friendly staff. Beautiful pub
Went for Sunday Roast for 4 adults and a child after a walk to build our appetites. Starters were fine. But not the roasts. We had 2 dry chicken roasts. Most of the chicken had to be left. 1 beef roast that was chewy. 1 pork roast with no crackling and uncooked fat around the slices. All roast potatoes were soggy!Kids sausage and mash had overcooked sausages so our son left half of one and barely touched the mash. They serve it with peas but we asked for raw carrots instead. Weirdly they couldnt offer any raw ones.It was as if the meals had been kept warm an hour longer than they should yet we know the kitchen was backed up because they told us it was. We didnt mind waiting an hour for the food but at £160+£20 service, this was a very disappointing experience. We did mention these issues but no dicount offered. I still have indigestion! I honestly dont know how you can mess up Sunday Roasts!Id recommend The Crown in Penn instead (or any other local Chef and Brewer eg Feathers by Cliveden). 100% better roasts and value.
In previous times the food here has been excellent. However, the experience this time was disappointing. I had a chickpea curry which appeared to be mostly tinned tomatoes and Mr didnt feel his fish and chips were worth the price. Saying that, customer service pleasant enough and a lovely place for a drink.
A good place for a Wake, nice and quiet, good buffet and respectfully handled. Could improve by having a real cider (made from 100% applesthough
I recently came to this pub for a family event/function. Everything was prepared for us when we arrived. We were greeted by staff and taken care off the whole time we were there. Although we were provided with a buffet of food, I myself am vegan, and I was prepared a separate plate which was given to me, which was incredibly kind, even though there were vegan options amongst the buffet food items. The staff were friendly, presentable and kind and were incredibly attentive. The pub is self was lovely, it has a great outdoor seating infront and the indoors has plenty of room.
Nice pub shame the food lets them down. Staff pleasant and helpful. The bar is clean and well laid out and gives a good impression when you enter.I had lunch, sausage and mash. Sausages appear precooked and were hard, difficult to cut. This was a well made and tasty product spoiled by the cooking. Served with a slightly dry mash, bland undercooked red cabbage. Onion rings and gravy were presentable.Landlord, catering tricks and shortcuts arent working. Have a word with the cook.
We used to Visit this pub every Sunday and had a couple of poor visits, food quality has declined, today we thought 3rd time lucky, unluckily they lost our order first, then the Sunday lunch beef was cold, my wife’s sausage and mash was bland as anything, we had to ask for gravy just to finish the meal- we were offered a free dessert, which we kindly declined. We will have to give this place a miss for a while after 3 poor visits! Hopefully they get back to the quality and service they used to offer as the pub is lovely and in a beautiful location.
Lovely old pub opposite the cricket green. Great ambience, welcoming staff and a fine selection of food and beverages. Recommended
I visited the pub on Sunday 24th Oct. We were quite a large party of 11 including children. The service was fine, food also very tasty and had a very nice time. The pub environment was really nice, cosy and staff very friendly. Also a dog friendly pub.I’m not local to the Amersham area, but would definitely go back if in the area again.
We visited the Hit & Miss today after our dog walk and decided to have lunch for 4 as well as a few drinks. After we sat down and ordered drinks, one of the White wines was not up to standard, and this was reported to the Waiter. Not alone did he change it, but he fully understood our issue, was exceptionally knowledgeable on wine selection on their menu, and was a pleasure to deal with throughout our time there. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, our doggies sat quietly under the table and seemed to have a very happy experience as well. Great ambiance, great food, friendly and courteous staff and fellow customers. All in all a great experience. Highly recommend!
Beautiful looking building in a country village. Food was really lovely and staff friendly. The furnishings were as the pub is named a bit of a hit or miss.
Very pleasant pub serving a good range of beers and great food. Wait staff were exceptionally helpful and pleasant. Outside tables conveniently positioned for watching the local sides cricketing endeavors (if thats your bag, manon a pleasant afternoon.
Lovely country pub with friendly staff, beer garden and food menu.
We usually come here after walking the dogs in the woods nearby and its normally a pleasant stop to have a drink outside. However, yesterday, before I was even able to turn the engine off in the car park, the pub owner came to my window and shouted at me, he asked if we were going to the pub, I said yes. Then he kept shouting and asked "when you go to the festival will you take your car?". I wasnt even aware of a festival, and felt this behaviour was unnacceptable. It felt hostile, so we turned the car back and drove down to another pub.I supported the pub during covid, buying cakes at the weekends but I no longer feel welcome.
Beautiful, dog friendly pub. The lemon and lime posset was delicious 😋. Wine and cocktail selection were good too. Will definitely be coming back.
Beautiful little treasure this! Lovely welcoming pub, with a good selection of beers and awesome food!! Best Roast dinner Ive had in a long time. Highly recommended
Managed to be seated on arrival without prior booking around 6:45-7pm on a Saturday, and were shown to an outside table. Orders were taken at the table and service was quick. Overall, a good place with friendly staff and good service for decent price drinks.
Really nice staff. Not much atmosphere, chilly, no heating. Food really lovely but very small portions. Havent been there for years and was disappointed to go back and find its not so good. Not good value for money.
We had a visit for dinner with friends & family. We went on time and had a very warm welcome.Being vegetarian, you don’t get enough choices usually, and a similar case was with this beautiful pub. We ordered the food. But, the girl who took the order came back and offered few more choices to eat, which were completely off the menu. It was really a kind gesture that they explored the options to tailor the needs of the customer. The food served, and it was scrumptious. We loved it.... We had a wonderful evening and as we had a bit of travel to reach back home, the girl at the counter offered Coffees as a gesture to boost the caffeine 😊 The entire staff is very friendly. I highly recommend to visit this.pub and encourage the local businesses.
We had our mothers ‘wake’ here on Wednesday. The staff were fantastic, we were on tables of six to the side room of the pub. We had pre booked the tables & the food. We had more then enough food for our party of 20. (As There was a lot left over, some people in our party took some homeThe food was delicious & we were very well looked after. I would highly recommend The Hit or Miss if you are thinking of booking here for your function. Thank you very much! 5star service all round!
This is supposed to be a decent place with good reviews, and thats what made me visit The Hit or Miss, driving all the way from Watford.Ambience is Hit. Its location is Hit - right across the picturesque cricket ground.Whilst food was Hit as well, they missed out on my main dish.We were there around closing time, and I give them benefit of doubt for missing out on my mains. Perhaps it was not possible for the chef to make the dish in time. What disappointed the most was the service - very poor. There was no communication weather my main dish would be served. My mates got there food served albeit serviettes and cutlery. We waited for good 5 minutes and there was no sign of anyone bringing those (of course we could have walked up to the till and got it ourselves)After about 15 mins or so, I chose to walk up and enquire about my mains. They had not made it, nor they acknowledged or not being aware. There was no "sorry" for not providing cutlery, no smiles while serving, no enquiries of how the food was.Perhaps they are reserved for "different" type of peopleWill I go there again? Hit or Miss?Based on what my mates commented about the food, absolutely yes. Based on experience of how we were served (and ignored), perhaps no!!I wish them good luck!!
Awesome place if you like top quality food, worth the price you have to pay for it👌😋
We were 20 minutes late for our reservation but the staff accommodated us really well and were extremely professional. Sunday lunch was very enjoyable, with a good choice of menu options. Highly recommend this lovely pub and happy to return. Our dog was also welcome which was great.
The pub was recommended by a local ; we were from Stamford. Its a super dog friendly venue with above excellent staff who were utterly welcoming, friendly, efficient and great with dogs. The food was the best Ive had in a very long time from a pub establishment (Im in the hospitality industry). Delicious and filling. The menus is not ordinary with great options available for all types and volumes. Very cosy and traditional yet have the capacity to cater for large groups and events. Great Village location too.
Had our mums wake here on 3rd June and would highly recommend. Very professional attentive staff and wonderful food. We just opted for the basic buffet but it was absolutely brilliant. Everyone commented. Thanks so much to Dotty for organising this for us and making a difficult day turn into a pleasant get together in memory of mum.
Came here for lunch with my family. Food was fantastic and very reasonably priced. Waiters were very friendly and helpful. We were sat at a table in an alcove which could not be seen from one end of the bar, this meant we were left waiting to order for a little while. However once we had ordered the food came very quickly and was very good. The pub itself is lovely and ideal to visit after a walk through the surrounding area. Would definitely visit again.
This pub serves constantly good and imaginative food. Unlike many other pubs you can hold a decent conversation as other diners are not shouting at one another. The staff are always friendly but efficient. Well worth a visit.
I needed to write and just asked if I could sit all day and do just that. Bearing in mind it was Good Friday.. they let me have a table to myself and I stayed for 9 hours... I did have dinner in.the evening and I am a vegan.. it was the best bit of grub in a long time eating out.. garden veg with rice simple but full of flavour.. please do more veg and vegan chef!! Beautiful staff, cool landlord and all round the best pub for miles ❤ thanks guys xx
