High St, Bray SL6 2AB, Riverside
Modern gastropub with traditional decor and standout English dishes with a twist designed by Heston.
Stumbled on this restaurant gastro pub whilst trying to find Fat Duck. Love it’s wooden indoor architecture and very cosy ambience. This pub dates from the 15th century. Was extremely lively. Got a nice table in a small concave. Their steaks were superbly done. Enjoyed the food in general. Worth the visit when you are in Bray
Incredible food, impeccable service and great atmosphere.. Highly recommended to anyone who is visiting the area and willing to splash a little on a lovely meal.
Excellent service for a start. Fabulous setting. Very tasteful decor with a couple of odd surprises which add to the ambiance. My starter didnt knock my socks off, but my main did. I had grouse. My partner had duck. Her green coffee sauce was out of this world. The duck was delicious. The grouse was cooked differently through three cuts, all equally good. However, towards the end of the meal, the meat and sauce suddenly blew my mind. I mean really blew my mind. I had to stop eating. It was like MDMA on the taste buds and I was tripping. Few more mouthfuls and I had to shed a tear of joy. Desserts were delightful, surprising us with unseen pleasures. Fill your boots. We did!
Fabulous experience, Maisey was an amazing host and the food was incredible as expected. Can highly recommend the Twisted Bloody Mary delicious.
Went fut a Sunday roast and it was a near perfect one. Plenty of food and the 3 courses menu is splendid.Would i go back? This is a difficult question to answer as 1h drive from London might not br worth it (unlike thw Fat Duck)
Had a fantastic meal here and was definitely worth it.The menu has a wide range of items so there is something for everyone. Its on the pricer side of a meal so expect to pay for the quality of food you get however it was certainly worth it.The scotch egg was by far the tasty so do try it. Great cuts of meat and perfectly cooked. I do agree with other reviews that the triple cooked chips were disappointing, a few of them were impossible to even put a fork through as they were so "crispy" on the outside. The staff were excellent and very attentive despite it being very busy. The quality of service is 5 star for sure. The atmosphere was good as it was busy but its very much a traditional pub when you walk in and the atmosphere reflects that as does the seating, benches and table. Will happily return when looking for top service and excellent food again.
Too expensive, food was goodAmbience feels underworked, a bit more effort could make a nicer feel.
Lovely restaurant so full of character. Waiting staff were excellent. We were given 4 course meal gift as red letter day but they made you feel no different to if you were paying yourself. So polite and friendly and welcoming. Very attentive without being too attentive. Knew the menu well and could explain the dishes perfectly without having to check everything. Perfect with allergens knew exactly what was in each dish without having to check with chef and excellent alternatives provided. A lovely little touch with a happy anniversary board. Would 100% recommend this restaurant. It was a lovely memorable special Occasion and everything was top quality with super knowledgeable pleasant, friendly and welcoming staff - thank you
Well if you want to have the Heston Blumenthal experience on a relatively tight budget this is the place. I cant count the amount of times Ive been to this pub. With its authentic decor rich history of famous people and royalty visiting. The menu is fantastic and it is dramatically cheaper than the fat duck just across the road. I love this place
I don’t normally write reviews but I thought I would write one as I was disappointed by my experience overall. We were charged 260 pounds for 2 nights for a very small room. We didn’t have towels the first night, there was nowhere to put feminine hygiene products in the toilet so they had to be put in an open bin in the bedroom, the coffee machine in the bedroom didn’t work and spilled boiling water everywhere. We really like the decoration of the room. The food was very nice but overpriced and took a long long time to come out to us. 13 pounds for a vegan main which had a few chickpeas and squash but was mainly leaves was ridiculous. Overall the staff were lovely and I would have given a much higher rating if it wasn’t so expensive.
Great food! Fresh and flavoursome, as you would expect from the Hinds Head/Fat Duck team. Also, great service. We did bust our budget with our wine choice, but there is a range of options available
I had a great experience at The Hinds Head last night. Really nice and cosy venue and still cant believe we spent a good 5 hours there. We arrived quite early and the staff was very welcoming and we got the option to sit at our table or the bar (as we were early). Once we sat down staff members gave us some time to settle and then the drinks menu was handed over to give us some time to decide. They were very knowledgeable when it came to questions on the menu and also gave us alternative recommendations and suggestions.Lovely food options on the menu and really enjoyed each course. This is of course personal opinion, I felt the lamb I ordered had a bit too much salt.My favourite was the dessert, really tasty, interesting flavours and combination of ingredients.Once again I want to praise the staff that they are friendly, efficient, professional and made it a great evening and a wonderful experience.
Was a bit alarmed by the set lunch menu as there were no options at all for non-meat eaters (I had put in the booking that a guest was pescatarian). However, once the server has checked with management, they were very flexible with providing suitable alternatives. The food itself was genuinely excellent, no complaints from anyone (roast beef, roast pork, fish of the dayand the portions were very reasonable. The sides that came with the dishes were top notch too.The bill was asked for but it seemed forgotten that it was a birthday lunch as it came out quite quickly (I had also mentioned this in the reservation). The bill was soon whipped away though as they also realised that one of us only had two courses and therefore they needed to adjust the price. I dont know whether at this point they realised the birthday aspect, but one way or another, a birthday treat came out and it was (alsodelicious. It then took a while to get someone to provide a card reader once we had received our corrected bill.So despite excellent food, the service issues mean 4 stars instead of 5 as the provided booking information seemed to be overlooked, which for this price point and reputation, shouldnt really happen in my opinion.
Overall the experience was good, but perhaps a bit overpriced when compared to similar restaurants. The service was attentive, knowledegeable and friendly. The space is suitably pub-ish although the sits by the entrance have more charm than the back rooms. There is a vast collection of drinks and the local Pilsner was delicious. The food however, was underwhelming (against a michelin star and £35 for a main), the food was overseasoned, slightly undercooked and salty for my taste, it would have been fine for a normal pub, but its not a normal pub price. All in all, it was a good experience but not one I would travel for.
I have been out of the UK for 6 years, and came back for a wedding . When asked what I wanted to order I said a beautiful Rib eye steak medium rare that would melt in my mouth. What I got 🤔🤔🤔Was a " when Harry met Sally" moment, a gastronomic orgasm and the pineapple cheese cake wasnt far behind, and whilst being looked after by a brilliantly trained and run staff who helped make the atmosphere Amazing and truly memorable..
£7 for a pint of lager and £9 for chips! The Barman should have been wearing a balaclava. Not for me sorry. It’s Maidenhead not Mayfair! In fact the pubs in Mayfair don’t charge £7 for a pint, it’s about £6.
I know there have been mixed reviews lately for the Hinds Head (including from me). However, my husband and I had a fantastic meal with exceptional customer service and delicious food and we really couldnt fault our experience on Saturday night. I believe there have been staffing issues recently, but if you speak to a member of the team they cant do enough to ensure you have a positive experience. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
Disappointed tbh. Heston needs to get his hands round The Hinds Head again. I used to love the place and it was always somewhere to come to celebrate but last nights meal was a huge disappointment. We paid £400 for 4 of us and we only had one bottle of rose and two beers between us so the rest was on food. I wouldn’t have minded if I felt the standard of food was appropriately exceptional but to pay that price and be fed triple cooked chips that were quite frankly so over cooked it was like eating batter by itself, average starters and dry fish for my main, I’m not a happy customer. With the rising cost of living and people being able to afford to go out less now, when you do go out you want it to be worth it, especially at £100 per head! On a positive note the waiting staff were efficient and friendly, no complaints there.
Superb. Excellent food; stunning service; and such a great pub vibe. Relaxed environment eating seriously tasty food.
The food is so good here. One of the highest quality pubs I have ever been to. Thank you for a great experience.
Lovely setting if not a little dark and low lighting a bit of a shame on a sunny day. The staff were competent and professional but lacked warmth and friendly interaction and the decor and tableware of a good standard.I was surprised that it was Michelin starred as Ive had better meals. The pea and ham soup served in a small espresso cup meant mouthfuls of smooth soup and lumps of pea and ham. The scotch egg was average in respect of sausage meat and breadcrumbs. Possibly a little over cooked. The beetroot and goats curd salad was bland and matt looking, certainly not as exciting as the description on the menu. There was a little too much salmon in relation to the rest of the items on the plate and the tea flavour not detectable almost required lemon and black pepper instead. The duck did not fall off the bone as I would have liked, was too tough and triple cooked chips not my thing as more like biscuits. Additionally served with a potato puree which was good but the puree was adequate and the chips overkill. Would rather have had a salad. The greens were well cooked. The profiteroles didnt work with the combo of Meringue and choux pastry and had no garnish whatsoever. In the dark lighting looked like piles of poop squashed in the middle of the bowl. Presentation poor. Strawberry cream was nice.Wine was great for a basic wine. Not sure if champagne or prosecco on arrival but was far too sweet and not good.It was a good balance of dishes and nice to taste so many different flavours but too heavy on carbohydrate for a 5 course meal. Better use of colour could have been made. This is a harsh review but for the price and the Michelin stars Id have expected far more.
Can’t believe it has a Michelin star. Should be reassessed soon. At best good pub food. Nothing inspired or beautiful. So disappointing. Waitresses pleasant but one does not reach across guests to put wine or bread on table.Amateurish service. very expensive for what was provided plus £18 plus added for service for an overpriced lunch. Don’t talk about the “famous” triple cooked chips. Greasy and overcooked and didn’t finish. We were sad at end of lunch as so disappointed with experience.
Amazing food in an ancient pub in a quintessential English village on a warm summer evening. Staff friendly and attentive, wine selection fantastic.
We had lunch here for my birthday and, honestly, it was PERFECT. We were looked after so well by the lovely staff, the menu choices were great and the food was just astonishing. We had Sourdough, Devils on Horseback, Tomato Salad, Pork Chop and my wife had the Quaking pudding while I had the Pineapple Cheesecake.Every ingredient of every meal was so well thought out and delivered. We will never forget how good it was!
Had lunch today (Jubilee Saturday). Given the day the restaurant was very quiet. I’ve had the pleasure of dining here many times and as you’d expect the food is wonderful (more of that in a momentbut set in a very relaxed pub environment. There isn’t a dress code and the gents I saw dining were anything from a t-shirt and jeans through to a jacket/blazer and trousers. Personally a relaxed shirt and chinos feels appropriate. I had the devils on horseback (a prune wrapped in bacon and slow cookedwhich was wonderful, along with the scotch egg (very small but it is a “taster” plateand the “special edition (for jubilee weekendof coronation chicken served on fruit bread. All three strangely complemented each other. My wife had the mushroom macaroni which she said tasted amazing and was a generous serving (see pictureand I had the fillet Hereford beef. (Not inexpensive at £68even considering the chef owner….however the bone marrow jus/sauce was a perfect companion coupled with the crispy/glass textured triple cut chips. We finished with the trifle (imagedwhich was delightful. There is a childrens menu which my son had the roast chicken which was suited him (he’s a fussy eater). With a couple of cocktails and three soft drinks the bill was a respectable £260.
Cant give this 5 stars because I was served a beer that had turned, which rather surprised me. No problem to have it changed though without a £2 surcharge for price difference.
Absolutely phenomenal - the dishes are traditional English but elevated in true Heston style. It’s just tasty food in great combinations and we really enjoyed our delicious meal.We had the crab with scones, and mushroom parfait for ‘snacks’, which were unusual and delicious. We shared the salmon starter, it was nice but nothing special. We both had the halibut for mains and it was truly amazing - soft flaky fish, wild garlic purée and we had the yummiest buttered cabbage with it! Was fab.Desserts were (surprisinglyless impressive but still better than most places you’d visit.Overall a truly memorable meal, we’d love to go back.
Delicious cocktails. Cosy and welcoming vibe with eclectic decor. Came here for drinks before our fat duck dinner across the road and BOY WAS THIS PLACE FRIGGIN GOOD! The interior decorations are unique and quirky but it works. 100% recommend if you are in Bray
Wow, what a wonderful experience, the food was exceptional, the staff so very friendly and helpful. The place itself was amazing with so much history behind it, would recommend to anyone who likes that little extra. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for, worth every penny.Thank you so very much x
Really good food especially the desserts. Waiting staff all fantastic, polite helpful and efficient. Surprisingly managed to get a table at the last minute on a Sunday lunchtime, bank holiday weekend as well.
If the prices were half as much Id say it was an average meal at an average pub. Its nice, the staff are nice and attentive, but the food was really really disappointing for the price point. £60 for a 300g ribeye that was chewy and relied on sauce for taste is not reasonable. I am all for overpaying for food when it is good, but this just wasnt. The pie was decent, but tiny. Good wine list. Probably wont come back, shame.
Had a lovely Michelin star lunch at the Hinds Head.Great Service from Maizy! New what she was talking about and seemed to really enjoy her job.Starters - Pea & Ham Hock Soup w/Mint OilScotch Egg w/Hollandaise SauceMains - Pork Chop & CabbageFillet Steak, bearnaise sauce & triple cooked chips.Dessert - Bakewell Tart w/ Yoghurt Ice CreamAll lovely apart from the chips (own opinionwere a bit over done thats why I didnt give 5star. Lost its inside fluffyness and was chasing them round the plate as fork wouldnt go into them.Would highly recommend!
Shared a fantastic meal with my other half. Service was great, atmosphere was very relaxed. Good selection of beers on tap. The food was amazing as to be expected. Highlight for each of us were the guinea fowl and the chocolate red wine slush with millionaire shortbread (The steak with bone marrow sauce was a close contender though).
So I was taken here as a birthday gift.. and it was lovely. Bray is beautiful. The hinds head is warm and inviting and steeped in history. The starters were interesting. There was a pea and ham soup with pork belly and ham hock. There was also a scotch egg. The soup was good. The scotch egg was spectacular. The roast dinner was gorgeous.. I had beef which was rare and tender. You get plenty of gravy and the veg were perfect. Im not a big fan of cabbage so that got left.I dont know what they do to the Yorkshire pudding but it was amazing.. had such good flavour. How do they do that? The horseradish was new for me.. I often find it too strong but here it was subtle and smooth. I was converted. The roast pots were fluffy in the middle and crispy bordering on too crispy on the outside. I liked them but you just might want to watch yourself if you have dentures.Desert was a treacle pudding.. umm Im sure it was really good but had a kinda black treacleish flavour which I dont much like so I ended up leaving most of it. It would be nice to have an option because I wouldnt have chosen it.The wine was perfect.. really lovely. And the service was attentive and professional without being intrusive. A real class act.I live a long way from Bray and if I was in the area I would definitely go again but I might not make a special trip.
Very comfortable pub with first class food and service. The food is top class, with quality ingredients. I had the rib eye steak with bearnais sauce. It was delicious, tender and full of taste. Had the cherry bakewell tart for dessert, again very well presented and full of flavour.
What a delightful experience. The food was so tasty and well presented. The missing star is the service. It was slow, and we waited for around 30 minutes between starters and mains.
The experience at Hinds Head was overall very good. We arrived 10 earlier and our table was set. We ordered the two courses Sunday lunch. Scotch egg and ham and pea soup as starters. For main I chose the beef option and my partner chose the pork option. They arrived in warm plates with roasted vegetables and potatoes as sides. The pork came with an apple saud option and a pork sauce and the beef with a beef sauce. We also ordered the popular triple cooked chips that were similar in taste and texture with the roast potatoes, crispy and crunchy at the outer part and soft inside. They were all delicious. They even brought us a toffee dessert for my partners birthday on the house. The building was also amazing . Highly recommend it.
Plus points- staff were friendly, efficient and attentiveIt ticked a boxWe were given a birthday desertHowever- I did not enjoy the cut of steak and it was just served by itself, no salad or veg. We both thought the chips were greasy and overcooked.I’ve had better scotch eggs than the one served here, the flavours just weren’t there and not sure why it was served with a Dijon mayonnaise, it didn’t complement it.For this sort of money I expect to be wowed and I wasn’t. You also can’t take drinks outside for some reason.
A wonderful country pub with the quirky, imaginative charm of Heston Blumenthal. Service is top notch, and we had a pleasant experience with two children under the age of 12. There is a dedicated kids menu, although some or the adult items such as the scotch egg will go down a treat as well. The wine list is excellent, the food is stellar and portions are generous. Strongly recommended.
My overall expectations for food in the UK are a bit low so this is nice, but nothing that special given the Michelin star. Friendly staff and generally reasonable food, but unless youre interested in some specific items here there are many cheaper or more interesting alternative places. Not the same level as The Fat Duck across the road, but pretty reasonable "pub" food. It is a bit pricey for what it is, and I found the starters a bit disappointing. Also overall food was slightly saltier than expected, but I think this is a personal taste issue and the scotch egg and desserts made up for an overall positive experience. Highly recommend the desserts (rhubarb trifle for something a bit tart and chocolate wine slush for a not so sweet, slightly bitter dessert). Also the "something to begin" items seem nice. The starters were a bit too salty (would have preferred less salt and salt on tableor boring and the mains were OK (mine was bit cold). Dinner by Heston (or ultimately The Fat Duckis a better overall choice if youre interested in a more funky gastronomic experience. Especially as they do not have the tasty mushroom ketchup here for the triple cooked chips. However Id say the nibbles and desserts here were better than Dinner.
I think this was the best bread, bearnaise and by far the best mushroom parfait- definitely recommend it if it’s available. Also a particularly good fillet steak special. The service was lovely, although occasionally entertainingly confused. The chips were actually slightly hard, and one portion was extremely salty- the other was fine. The cherry bakewell was great on the portions with cherry but very underflavoured without. My partner liked the devils on horseback more than anything else. The sommelier was also fantastic- absolutely spot on recommendations.
Indulgent food my heaven. A place to go with your best friends and enjoy an evening of fine food and exemplary service. The scotch egg, perfectly crispy on the outside but with a still runny (tinyquails eggs on the inside - how? The more traditional steak and chips, cooked exactly how you like it with the most delightful sauce. Quakers pudding - it shakes on the plate - a warm panacotta style pudding from medieval times reimagined for the discerning 21st century clientele. A relaxed atmosphere, unpretentious but attentive service and food you’d struggle to cook anything line it at home. Just brilliant.
Really great food and atmosphere. Especially recommend venison carpaccio and scotch egg. Great selection of wines by glass.I didn’t enjoyed bone marrow sauce that came with steak unfortunately. In my opinion having more options for steak accompaniments would be nice, maybe some peppercorn/mushroom sauce options. But overall - really great meal.
Wonderful food, setting and staff. Looking forward to returning. Dishes that sound simple, but were sublime. (Pea & ham soup with mint oil, roasted cod loin, quaking pudding - every mouthful was bliss)
Wonderful food and attentive service. The staff were good enough to give us a third side dish on the house.Lovely ambience. Cant wait to go back.Good value for a Michelin star restaurant.
Really top quality food and wine and staff were very attentive. Five stars for that. .. . Prices are very punchy though. Portion sizes are just adequate not generous. Dessert menu is a bit lacking. Food quality and staff made the overall experience worth the 5 stars.
Fantastic experience! We called in by chance but ended up trying the Hind’s Head quavers, the signature scotch egg and, of course, the triple cooked chips! All were out of this world! Not even over-priced when you consider the quality of ingredients, the work involved in producing such fine and unique food and chef skills! Amazing, show-stopping food. So glad we called in!
The food was well prepared and tasted excellent, however the portion size for the price was very disappointing. One tiny strip of belly pork and two spoonfuls of some barley (with no vegetables included), lost on a giant plate cost nearly £30! And no apology or concession was offered when I pointed this out to the serving staff, they merely smiled and nodded. A meal for two came to a whopping £159, but we went home hungry and out of pocket. Disappointing value for money, not sure I will go back again.
Firstly just like to say that the food tasted good and the staff and service was great, really friendly and knowledgeable. The price tag was just too high compared to the food we received. £200 for 2 drinks, 2 starters, 2 mains and 1 desert, and I was still hungry after the meal.Quite disappointed as I had heard really good things about this place. The biggest disappointment was the desert menu, I have a real sweet tooth and nothing on there really stood out for me. My partner had the strawberry soup, which was alright, but not for me.
Absolutely amazing food and great service. First eat out after lock down and you just have to go somewhere nice. Been here couple of times and standard is always high! Scotch egg is crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. Mushroom Parfait feels like thousands of mushroom explode in your mouth, extremely tasty. The steak looks ordinary compare to other dishes but dont let the look deceive you, this is steak cooked to extreme perfection!! Pork belly is just so tender and succulent. Went there for my birthday and there is a special surprise at the end. Also I brought my own cake and the restaurant is so accommodating that they let me leave my cake in their fridge for me to take away at the end. Just make sure you mention to them before hand. Absolutely loved my visit and you wont be disappointed!
