The Hemingway in Victoria
Description
Checked their menu online and made my way over, turns out prices have increased by £5 which RUINED my plans
MoreI used to love this place, I used to come here a lot a few years ago. However, at the moment it is completely different that it used to be.We had the worst vegetarian Sunday roast ever. The meat substitute was some sort of mashed potato’s with beans and curry fried in a pancake. All the elements were extremely dry, specially the potatoes. We had to ask for extra gravy sauce, but it was still no good. My partner and I were very disappointed with this food.
MoreWhats not to like. Id call in every night if it was my local. Unfortunately I live 140 miles away. Hoo hum.
MoreThe Beef Wellington was hands down some of the best pieces of meat I have ever had, and that at a somewhat affordable price. Beer was good too. Definite recommendation!
MoreLovely pub to have a drink and really nice staff. However it was the worse Sunday roast I ever have. 7 of us and all super disappointed. Vegetables weren’t cooked, potatoes were dry, gravy was tasteless, vegetable patty was terrible and the meat was definitively not good quality. Sticky toffee pudding wasn’t so terrible but over cooked. Maybe they aren’t just cooking good roasts because we had the salmon croquettes as a starter and that was tasty. Hand cut fries aren’t good either.
MoreOur very favourite spot for a Sunday Roast! Food is delicious and service is fast, friendly team. Make sure you book a table as they are usually quite busy ;)
MoreSadly I don’t have anything good to say about this pub other than the company was great but I brought that with me! We went for Sunday lunch and we ordered a variety of roasts: the vegetarian option was the most revolting offering I have EVER tasted; I’m still not entirely sure what it was. One of our chicken dishes was spicy chicken, not standard roast as on the menu, and the other chicken roast NEVER came. The roast beef was lovely and so it should have been at £22. We repeatedly asked where the other roast chicken was and after everyone else at our table had finished eating were told the chicken roasts were now sold out.. We had to wait a further 20 mins for an alternative. It was actually shocking! To add insult to injury no reduction to the bill was offered as compensation. I truly felt for the young girl who was the manager on the day as we were not the only table suffering from awful over-priced food and terrible service but perhaps the owners of this pub need to have a very hard look at whether they are just in this game to rip people off or to supply good, affordable food to customers who would love to give them their repeat business.
MoreI could not have liked the dining experience less. The impressive physical facade of this beautiful Victorian pub betrays the cacophony, ineptitude, sloppy service and poor cuisine that awaits the hapless customer.Beyond the din of packed in diners struggling to be heard, you are greeted with a wall of overly loud Latin American music. I love a bit of Tito Puente as much as the next person, but I came away with a sore throat from having to shout to be heard.Dont expect great food. The vegetarian roast option was a disastrous bit of deep fried dough flecked with indiscriminate vegetables. In addition to this, the dish did not come with roast potatoes, which is strange as it was described as a roast with ALL the trimmings. It really was vile. The roast beef at £22 was tasty, but with its accompanying tasteless Yorkshire pud scarcity of gravy and disappointing roast potatoes, it made the price tag seem very inappropriate. Of the two roast chicken meals we ordered, only one arrived and that one was a spicy half chicken that you might expect from Nandos and not with a roast meal. The other chicken failed to materialise and the staff seemed to not care less. One of the servers even had the gall to state "Hey, were busy" Having reminded them of our order, the server announced that they were now out of roast chicken, and the hastily ordered replacement of baked Brie appeared to confound the kitchen staff so much so that the reheating of this little bit of cheese took them a full twenty minutes and long after everyone else had finished. With no reduction for this error, it fell to one of our party to remind them that it would be customary to at least waive the cost of the replacement Brie. The Hemingway seems great for those who enjoy the buzz and the noise with their pan-Mediterranean cuisine and their craft beers, but it doesnt do the traditional roast at all well and needs to have a long hard look at itself as to whether it can justify those prices with such poor standards of food and service .
MoreBelow average. We went there for a Sunday roast, it was unimpressive. What ruined the experience even more is the time it takes to get anything, not even going to talk much about the one order that wasnt even filed by the waitress, which meant an additional 30min wait for no reason. They didnt even apologise for the missing order, or the time it has all taken, they just blamed it on Sunday being their busy day, but hire more people then, or set less tables!!!
MoreI loved the halloumi courgette cake with salad. Delicious food and great atmosphere.
MoreSpace is great for drinks. Not many options for ciders, just Aspalls and Rekordelig. The food is okay, had a crispy belly bun and the filling and bun were very dry. The pork belly was actually crispy, but made the whole dish even more dry. Its a shame as I do like their Sunday roast and the atmosphere!
Moreabsolutely love their beef wellington - this is the single best meat dish I have had in all of London. great atmosphere and fun hunting inspired decorum. super friendly staff
MoreGreat pub - good selection of beers, quiet outside space, great food and Sunday lunch. It is easily a 5 star review except that the prices are just eye watering. £7 for a scotch egg? Outrageous - however great it is.
MoreSuch a delicious roast -good value for money Ill definitely be back.Really lovely staff also
MoreThe best pub food I’ve had for years. And a cool, welcoming local vibe too.
Was looking forward to getting a meal and wine. Ordered 2 glasses of soda with a dash of lime for us to have whilst we decided what we’d like to eat/drink and got charged £6. If a glass of (mostly icewater with a dash of squash is £3, I dread to think what everything else costs. Left swiftly and went somewhere more reasonably priced.
MoreLovely pub with good beer and a great atmosphere. Would definitely recommend
I went to The Hemingway on Sunday, for the Sunday roast and it was not the best. I had the beef fillet roast, the potatoes were so dry and hard. I could have used the potatoes as Balls for a game of cricket. Vegetables was OK nothing special very dry, Yorkshire pudding tasted like sand paper, beef slices was OK. Only reason I gave it a two star is because of the beer, The Hemingway beer was lovely. My second picture shows i couldnt finish the food and how much i left. So, if you want to waste your money then definitely go there.
MoreA cozy place full of hospitality and a nice environment. They have a very tasty beef Wellington at a very good price.
MoreGreat pub with outdoor seating. Loved it for a round of Saturday pints!
Nice pub. Very spacious. Lovely atmosphere. We had a birthday meal here. We had the Beef Wellington (A-), the harissa chicken burger (C), the risotto (A), the fish and chips (B), the calamari (A-).I would return.
MoreThat taco is white af but still love the place ha
£3 for a soda water!! that’s water out of the tap with a soda stream. 🤦🏽♂️ soda extortion aside, this pub has dived under new ownership. how can you screw up a pub with perfect location, decent set up so bad?!
MoreVery disappointed at the vegetarian roast today. I should of know from the description - ‘vegetarian roast’, but honestly the roasts here have always been decent. The main was a sort of dry veg and chickpea curried burger/patti with a sort of lentil gravy. One lonely boiled carrot, a piece of broccoli and loads of spring beans. Looked strange and tasted blah.
MoreBrilliant pub! Me and my partner have been coming here for 3.5 years. The food is amazing especially the fish and chips, the staff are brilliant, friendly and always willing to be at your service. Definitely our top pub!!
MoreIll get my one tiny negative out the way - please get better craft and cask beer on? You have some amazing breweries nearby (Old Street & Howling Hops to name 2please please get some proper craft or cask ales - not just Doom Bar (owned by Molson Coors and Beavertown (Owned by Heinekenthese arent craft.Anyway, aside from that minor detail this place is fantastic!Friendly staff, talkative and relaxed but very efficient and professional. The Beef Wellington was absolutely amazing, me and my mate ordered one each - they are meant for 2 people however we both hadnt eaten all day in anticipation of this meal and we both cleared our plates. The fillet of beef was tender and served medium-rare, it was seasoned very well and as Ramsay would say, it was beautiful. The beef basically melted in your mouth. The duxelle was free of water and the deep earthy taste from the mushrooms was top notch. The puff party was cooked well being light and crispy. This was served with a side of beans, stem brocoli and cabbage all again, well seasoned and cooked just right with only a slight crunch. Lovely. This came with a gravy boat.A further side of triple cooked hand made chips was also served, these were also lovely and fluffy with a crunchy skin.We shared a bottle of red with this and it paired with the meal perfectlyIn Central London youd pay over £70 just for the Wellington alone. This pub, being quiet and sofisticated yet laid back with some awesome music (most of which I noted featured in the The Inbetweeners as a coincidence, which was a fun twistmeant for me we had good value for money too, considering the rising costs of ingredients such as the fillet.Would certainly return for another Beef Wellington and a bottle.Hats off to the chef and the barman for a top afternoon!
More1. awful food sounds good tastes terrible2. Stinky dirty toilets3. Grossly overpriced- drinks don’t be fooled by the friendly airy vibe you are better off down the road at the empress or the Royal inn on the park all much better than this deceptive disappointment
MoreVery disappointed. Ordered tap Diet Coke and it was flat, so we exchanged for bottled coke. Ordered two veggie burgers. They were extremely stodgy made of sweet potatoes, ordinary potato and chickpeas. They had been overcooked so much that one side was completely crispy and on top of that there was a lot of oil in the burger. The young female staff member said that maybe The burger hadn’t been cooked very well today! Service was very poor. The worst part is we ordered olives and we found fungus on the olives. They took them away and said sorry we will take it off your bill and blamed it on the supplier. Very bad experience.I have been here before new year and loved the veg burger which was made the fresh mix veg. It was delicious. It’s as if the chef has changed.
MoreWent for a Easter Sunday. Staff were confused and erratic. Ordered drinks that never came, had to re-order, came back wrong, Soda Water Lime caused the most confusion.Requested a starter to arrive with a main for one of our party which was forgotten about. One of our party ordered a veggy roast, they had clearly run out and just slopped a veggy burger onto a roast dinner. When you consider how expensive the food is here you expect better quality.Overall poor experience and there are better roasts/gastro pubs locally at this price point which at nearly £20 a meal is on the high side.I did however see a dog chase a squirrel on the way home which improved the experience measurably.
MoreWhat a beautiful pub with lovely service and lovely people. Also, it has the subtle things, someone in management cares. Tampons provided for free in the bathrooms, toilets are good quality
MoreFood was overpriced and the meat was very fatty, there was lots of staff but they look like they dont enjoy their job very unhelpful and a bit rude and hard to get their attention.. Guinness looked like something out of a weatherspoons not even filled to the top of whatever random glass it was in
MoreStaff were useless and also rude to both my girlfriend and me. We were sat for 30 minutes without anyone bothering to ask us whether we would like to order. When I went up to the bar, I was greeted by a man who was grimacing at the thought of human interaction despite working in a customer-facing role. After a few grumbles he begrudgingly poured me two drinks whilst three of his colleagues did nothing behind the bar. We were then made to feel a burden when we were served undercooked chips that we wished to exchange for fries. After 15 minutes of one staff member trying to reserve us our undercooked chips and having them refried, we finally got what we had asked for. I don’t like being a Karen, and having worked in hospitality for 8 years I know it can be tough…but the service here was dreadful and there are no excuses. Avoid if you want to enjoy a pub experience.
MoreGreat outdoor area, if you can get a spot in the sun even better.Very close to Victoria Park and The 388 bus stops just outside it.Friendly staff and tasty food.
MoreBest roast in London by far. Lovely bar staff. Quirky features, good beer on tap. Can’t go wrong.
MoreTurned up for a Sunday lunch, having booked 2 weeks prior, only to find out our names were not on the list, despite having a confirmation email. No matter how hard the staff member stared at the list, the booking name did not appear. A table was to be made ready in 5 minutes so we were told.20 minutes later, the table was ready, we were guided to it by a less than enthusiastic staff member. (I get it’s a busy Sunday and serving food in a pub might not be your ideal career pathbut being made to feel like a burden isn’t ideal. We ordered food only to receive it 90 minutes later. People who were seated after got their food before our group. The food itself was amazing, 5 stars for that. Good portions, hot and well cooked. One of the best Sunday roasts I’ve had. To be fair, they discounted the bill, acknowledging the errors, but it appeared there was no management figure who was in control of the chaos. Get the service right, and it would be 5 stars
MoreI was shocked at the table we were given.A dark, dismal damp cold room that seemed like a store room. They brought a fan heater in and it didnt work.We asked to be moved as we were all very annoyedHealth and safety rules were not observed as my friend asked for a disinfectant spray and a cloth because our table was dirty and sticky TOTALLY WRONGThere was a load of dust and rubbish in the corner too. This was extremely concerningWe received an apologyDue to them being busy I realised they were not concerned.I thought about contacting the LBH Health and Safety department but we all said we will never return.Im Hackney born and bred.A real pity that this establishment has gone so far down.Sunday lunch is available everywhere and we have a choice to never return.Im sad to write this.
MoreAll the doors were opened so a cold draught was going through the whole dining room....we were all freezing. Beers were ok. Food was not wonderful. It looked nice but my fish was a bit oily and the chips not cooked enough. My wife took the burger and found cartilage in the meat.
MoreReally mediocre Sunday roast, and for almost 20 quid. Had heard great things, so was super disappointed. Guinness was also served in a generic glass, had far too big a head, and tasted like licking a bit of metalStaff were lovely
MoreBeautiful roast dinner, FULL of flavour - the vegetables had little notes of Orange glaze on them and were non-typically British by NOT being over cooked!I ordered the Roast Beef - a delicious cutMost impressively the service was first classUpon arrival I saw a huge lineup in a house full of customers and the waiters were brilliantNever stopped working, were always attentive and most of all gave us their undivided attentionDefinitely going back!A*
MoreWe had a very enjoyable afternoon here. I would recommend the Beef Wellington for 2. Really tasty. I don’t think it needed the salad?! but hey ho. Toilets are phenomenal. Look forward to returning.
MoreI come here now and again for a bit of a treat Sunday lunch for the beef Wellington. It’s not lost it but it’s certainly less impressive than it used to be. And ten quid dearer. It used to come served on an impressive wooden board with two gravies and two potato sides. Now it comes on ordinary cheap white plates with one gravy and one portion of chips. The greens are good but for some reason they add bacon to it which is odd when you have so much meat already. And also a cold salad next to the hot greens which makes no sense. Anyway the Wellington itself was really good but the 30% price hike and big drop in presentation means I’ll be going elsewhere for my Wellington in future.I also got their “gazpacho” which was nothing to do with a gazpacho. So thick it was almost solid and I was picking bits of skin out of my mouth for minutes just from one spoonful. It was also green which seems odd for a tomato based liquid salad. And it essentially just didn’t even taste like gazpacho. Massive failure.
MoreA fabulous meal, one of the best beef wellingtons Ive ever had and £44 for 2 people. We were also celebrating so ordered a bottle of Laurent Perrier Rosé champagne which was delicious and fairly reasonable at £90 (considering restaurant mark ups). Lovely service and the lavatories are really nice. To note, they are unisex loos, which I had no issues with but some people question
MoreThe food was delicious and great customer service. Only removed one star because it was pouring with rain and the covered area leaked really badly.
MoreDespite the previous reviews I am writing based on my experience here today on a weekday lunch. Came here early to avoid any crowd and managed to get a seat outside with the sunny weather. I ordered the beef wellington as there are not many restaurants in London that serves this wonderful dish. Although on the menu it mentioned for two, if you have a big appetite then you can finish it with no issue. That’s what happened to me 😀. Overall the wellington was cooked medium rare and perfect juicy. Loved the stuffing they made for this. I would definitely recommend you to go for this if you want something different. I was the first customer to order this and it does have a long wait of 45 minutes for this which was mentioned to me by the server. Overall this is definitely a nice gastropub in East London near Victoria Park to have a good meal.
MoreLove the Hemingway especially for beef Wellington. In fact I’ve only ever had the beef Wellington here... it’s that good. Staff really welcoming - the back dining area can get a little noisy especially when some people I sit on high pitch shouting, but that’s not the Hemingway’s fault. Not cheap - but not a rip off either. You get what you pay for: good quality food and wine in a good setting. A place I go to regularly.
MoreBeen here a few of times and the food it bang on - great roasts, loads of flavours and top desserts. Lively but chilled atmosphere as well and some disturbing taxidermy on the wall which is always good. Kid friendly or trying their best to be kid friendly, the place is usually so busy, you just have to squeeze the buggy, etc in where ever theres a gap, and make sure your toddler drink someone’s drink
MoreI am not sure if there has been a change of management here, but my word it is such an awesome pub now days! Really reasonably priced drinks, brilliant food and a lovely chilled out environment to sit and chill in! The bar staff were absolutely brilliant too, super friendly and professional! It looks great inside with lots of faerie lights all around. Comfy sofas and good outside seating! Great place!
MoreGorgeous grub and beautiful staff. If youre into sawdust and chair chucking, table turning bar fights, then youd find the Hemingway a bit if a bore. If you like ambience and interesting people with comfy places to sit, then this gaff is for you.
MoreA popular pub at weekends, often with a long wait for a table. Short of time we decided to eat our Sunday roasts outside. Not something I would recommend in the late autumn, as the food got cold very quickly and the staff weren’t attentive. The food was ok, but for a roast dinner, only 2 roast potatoes each seems a bit lacking? We asked for some extra gravy but it didn’t arrive. After mentioning about our disappointment at this forgotten request while paying the bill, the staff member didn’t say much then rudely began a conversation with another a colleague. It seems they were simply too busy to offer any apology!
MoreAmazing service, first time there, can tell its not going to be the last one, refreshing pints and 5 star food, had asparagus wrapped in Parma ham with poached egg and it was theeee best, very friendly staff and prices that dont bite! Highly recommend 👌
