The Hellenic Museum in Saint Albans
Description
Privilege
Soooo pretty......in the heart of Melbourne. Who would have thought. A beautiful oasis of greenery and atmosphere. Ohhhh so lovely🌳🌳🌳🌳
MoreA beautiful gallery with helpful staff and a gorgeous special exhibition! I highly recommend visiting.
MoreHighly recommended for art lovers
Well worth the entry cost of $12! All the different exhibitions were super interesting and very well presented.
MoreThe staff is adorable, and the exhibits are interesting, but it is all laid out in a "classic" (ahem, boringfashion. This is a quiet small musium with exhibits and small notes beside them, I guess it could use some more modern approach to show the magnificent Hellenic history.
MoreVisited Hellenic museum today with my friends. Such amazing hidden treasure didn’t even know was there. The way it was displayed, explained, attention to detail and aesthetic was just first class.I would highly recommend to visit this museum.
MoreI didn’t plan a trip to this museum, but I’m so glad I stumbled into it!! It was an awe inspiring experience to view ancient and contemporary art, especially the intricacy of ancient Greek pottery, jewellery and statues!! Usually I’m not a huge fan of contemporary art in museums but the exhibits here tied into each other subtly and succinctly, and if you get a chance, check out Henson’s photography exhibit upstairs- they capture relics such as Alexandrian earrings and gold chalices being used by a modern model. The staff were also so amazing and Evelyn was super kind!
MoreReally cool! A good range of exhibits. I paid $12 for an adult ticket.
Variety of exhibitions, didnt expect half of them, really friendly staff, no cost to store bags, cheap entry. Incredibly interesting experience, will definitely return
MoreVery interesting artefacts and sophisticated displays. Beautiful old building. Worth a visit.
MoreVery interesting, great Museum
What a beautiful museum, tucked away at the top of the city. Super friendly and informative staff made for a great start. A lovely and varied collection of pieces from the early bronze age to the Roman period, different time pieces that were a joy to see. I mean they are from Europe..so to see this in Oz was fantastic and worth a visit before this exhibition ends. The sculpture..is breathtaking and worth seeing. There is an Olympic torch exhibit too which was so interesting. Easy to get to as on tram and train line. Only $12 entry fee - worth it! No food or drinks but cafes nearby.
MoreIts a good place for history enthusiasts and little ones with interest in mythology and Gods. However nude statues can be a barrier for some ethical groups. Otherwise climbing high stairs is typically a problem for older people. They have public tours in every first Saturday of the month. Good value of money, friendly staff and very calm and quiet environment. For a taste of different experience, recommended a visit.
MoreLovely venue. A beautiful old building filled with a comprehensive collection of artefacts from the ancient period to modern day. Highly recommended.
MoreExceeded expectations. A somewhat small museum but has a very good selection of artefacts, art and exhibits. Can be appreciated by most people but is definitely a treat for fans of Greek mythology, the history of Greece, ancient warfare, the Olympics, Christian history, etc. The navigation through the galleries isnt always clear but theres always something interesting and occasionally stunning in every section. The highlight for me was definitely the virtual reality experience (Gods Myths & Mortalswhich takes you back in time to an immersive learning experience. You can cover the museum in 45 minutes quickly or about 1.5 hours if you really read everything.
MoreAmazing exhibitions. Wonderful blending of the ancient and contemporary.
Gorgeous little museum with a great mix of ancient and contemporary pieces of art. Hidden gem housed in the old Victorian Mint building.
MoreA wonderful Museum hidden between those tall buildings. The exposition is marvelous with artefacts of the archaic and the geometric periods. The statues, despite being copies, awoke in my soul true devotion and perplexing feelings. Even the staff is very welcoming and kind, very easy to maintain deep and cultural conversation with. (To them, if you go to Spain some day, just tell me ☺️). I truly recommend stopping by this museum.
MoreThis was a truly special experience! With a wide range of ancient Grecian artifacts, and just history history and history! It really takes you back in time to show you the wonders that Greece brought into the world and extreme sufferings they endured from the Turkish people in a bid to survive their language, religion and freedom. The staff were also very friendly and the Greek lady who was hosting tours was extremely knowledgeable! 🇬🇷
MoreDefinitely a hidden gem of a museum in the heart of the city. The main exhibition creates a cohesive timeline of Hellenic culture and history, supported by a very informative and well structured audio guide (that the helpful staff member assisted in setting up on my phone). Great way to spend a quiet afternoon relaxing and learning.
MoreSuch an amazing day at The Hellenic Museum for school holiday workshop, Boardgames, Strategy & the Underworld. This is such a cool place, housed in the gorgeous former Royal Mint building on Williams Street. The exhibitions are stunning. I felt transported back to the museums in Europe. The staff are, in no word of a lie, brilliant! They really brought the myths and history to life and were so welcoming, knowledgeable and interesting. And finally, this workshop for kids (and us big kidswas the bees knees or should I say, golden fleece? We learned about and played the games Hoplite Petia, Egyptian Senet and Chinese Go and the kids made their own games also. Thank you Valentina, Ben and Tom for making our visit so memorable and wonderful! We will definitely be back. Highly recommended!
MoreThis is a bit of a secret because it is in a building behind a large fence that doesnt draw you in. Fact is the location seems to say not for the public. However! The museum is fantastic and well worth it.
MoreIt is always a pleasure to enjoy time at the Hellenic museum.* Son and I went on Sunday to THE BLOCK PARTY at the museum, where we encountered birds of pray, Ancient board games, Ancient warriors as well as amazing 3D remodelled artefacts in Virtual reality. We had a wonderful time 🇬🇷🏺🏺🏺🏺🏺
MoreSet in this beautiful and iconic Royal Mint building in Melbourne, this is a beautiful and well laid out museum and considering its size, it has an amazing number of exhibits including a beautifully curated collection of artifacts and art spanning the history and culture of ancient Greece! Its somewhat of a hidden gem in this part of Melbourne and is highly recommended. It will take you to another world of culture, sports and wars!
MoreLoves the Hellenic museum. Interesting facts about Greek history.
A great place to know Greek and European history
I was expecting a bit of a haphazard accumulation of donated bits and bobs, but I got a really beautifully presented, concise look at Greek history. The artefacts are a solid survey of the hits of Hellenic history. Without giving anything away, everyone from the phamily to the phalanx will feel catered to.Has the best men’s toilet in the city. Fantastic tilework and sense of scale. The window and ceiling height are breathtaking. If you’ve got an hour or two free — maybe before the markets? Or you’re sick of your picnic pals at Flagstaff — I would 100% say, pop in.
MoreGreat little museum without being too big. Allow a couple of hours. Some exhibits are borrowed from Athens and are works class
MoreA hidden gem right in the middle of the city. I was awestruck to see the preserved artefacts, paintings, dresses, jewellery, weapons and shields from as far back as 800BCE. If you are a history lover like me, you can not miss this treasure!!
MoreThere is a surprising number of good quality exhibits in this modestly sized museum
MoreThe museum is awesome and so are the exhibitions. I think everyone should visit.I recently attended one summer cinema night and although the set up and the atmosphere was majestic, the service and attendance I found them to be less than satisfactory- definitely room for improvement there. There is need for more people serving at the bar and maybe table service for drinks as well? Just an idea.By the way I do hope that things improve because I definitely want to go back 😊
MoreWe attended an event in the grounds next to the Hellenic Museum last weekend and we were lucky enough that it was open to all attendees. We went in to have a look and were amazed at the exhibits. There was a mixture of ancient and modern exhibits, artifacts and art. As an added bonus we bumped into the director of the museum who had personally acquired some of the items and took a small group of us on a tour. It is well worth a visit even if you are not of Greek heritage.
MoreA beautiful and unique place to study, discover and celebrate all things historic Greek interwoven with the blended world of Australia.Inspirational, informational, well-curated, modern with a classical touch, fun, great staff, beautiful gifts.Best museum for the ancient history lovers!!!
MoreFantastic museum for those interested in ancient history; you can easily spend 2hrs here. I was also really impressed with the current exhibition statue the Messenger by Sam Jinks, which was an unexpected surprise. Would highly recommend spending a couple of hrs here to any history lover visiting Melbourne. There is also a cafe on site which I didnt visit.
MoreIf you’re in Melbourne and have an interest in Ancient history, do yourself a favour and go to The Hellenic Museum. Beautifully curated with pieces covering about 8,000 years, the museum provides information as well as incredibly well preserved artefacts. I was fortunate enough to visit while The Messenger exhibition is on and OMG. Go. It’s a must see.
MoreThis is a nice place to have a glance on the history and culture of ancient Greece!
MoreA broad but informative overview of Greek history, culture and art.
Great museum. Unique and quality exhibits.
Small place but huge collection. You will be busy for at least 2 hours.
An interesting place worth about an hour of your time. Most of the bigger statues are replicas but other smaller stuff is authentic.
MoreNice collection of artefacts from the benaki museums in Athena. Nice place to quicky bask in some cultural history
MoreNothing compared to actually going to Greece but definitely worth a visit if you love Greece and its history. Entry is $10 which seems fair. Beautiful old beautiful that was the old mint.
MoreNice little museum, lots of interesting artifacts and a good overview of the history. Recommended if youre near Flagstaff station.Making your way through the exhibit, you start in ancient Greece and progressively make your way through time. Each epoch is described before you see the items on display. We got through it in about an hour and a half, but to read the descriptions of all the items would take longer.Upstairs they have a good display of pottery items with enquiry questions for kids to engage with it as well. The video display of how pottery was made is pretty educational, I definitely learnt alot 😁.
MoreWonderful, small museum in downtown Melbourne. Inexpensive entry fee and plenty to take in and read and learn. We had only about an hour to spend and could have spent many more. Well laid out and the museum is housed in the old Royal Mint...glorious surrounds. Evelyn at chem is was friendly and knowledgeable. Well worth a visit.
MoreGreat small museum in historic Mint building
Small art museum , Amazing to visit just 5 minutes walk from Pegasus Hotel. Nice Collection n pic good to view. Love it.
MoreThe Hellenic Museum has a wonderful, but very small, collection showing the highlights of Greek antiquity, ranging from 5000 year old bronze objects, statues and pottery through to manuscripts, books, weapons and traditional clothing. Well worth supporting and encouraging more acquisitions. Great place to educate todays youth about the origins of western civilisation, art, culture and politics.
MoreAn absolutely top-rate collection of artifacts from Homeric times to the Greek Revolution. Not a large museum, but quantity is no substitute for quality.
MoreYes, loved it. Apart from the museum, which is housed in the old Mint, there is a rear outdoor area for small functions with excellent catering. An enclosed area and an outdoor area. I had the privilege of attending a private wedding and then a 50th birthday party. I believe there were 160 guests and there was room for plenty more. Excellent. Highly recommend this place.
MoreBeautifully curated little museum of Greek antiquities and history, right in the heart of Melbourne. It is a privilege to be able to see these ancient treasures up close without being crammed in with crowds; and there is the incredible bonus of seeing some of Bill Hensons evocative and haunting images in a dedicated exhibition room.
