The Heartwood Cafe - Restaurant in Medicine Hat, Canada
We both had the beet Borsch soup, Gerry had the vegetarian quiche and i had German fritters made of German sausage and cheese. Very good and filling. The Fritters were a meal alone, very hearty eating. They have a German menu on Mondays, we like German Food so we are back tomorrow, Monday for lunch again.
I just happened to walk by this place and decided to stop in during Sunday Brunch. It was delicious, and staff were lovely. The vibe was really welcoming. I cant wait to come back the next time I am in the Hat.
Me and my bf drove thru town on our way to Vancouver and decided to stop for breakfast. Decor of the place is very cute and our server was very friendly. We waited for over 45min to get a sandwich and an omellette. The coffee my bf ordered was sold out, his omelette came without the sausage and bacon he requested and my gluten free sandwich came on a regular bread. Lucky for me I know gf bread from regular wheat, I would warn people with severe allergies not to trust this place. Upon returning the sandwich, it took another 30-40 min to get the replacement. Our quick breakfast stop turned into almost two hours. Needless to say, two cups of coffee, a soggy sandwich and an omelette run us over 53$, they didnt even take care of the drink for the inconvenience, I was rather floored and would never go back...
My first time here and I will be back as often as I can. Amazing food, awesome service and great atmosphere. I will be telling everyone I know about how good the food is here. The food here is so good you would swear your Grandma and your Mom are back there cooking.
I ate here on Friday, ordering the borscht and it was awful.Ive been here in the past and it was good before. Now Im hearing that the original owner is gone and there is a new owner. No wonder for the change in the quality of food!Worst part is, there has been no talk about this at all. People have been coming to Heartwood for years and now the new owner is just riding on the coattails of what the previous owner created. The baking is about the only thing that hasnt changed. Hence the 1 star.
Immediately upon walking in I loved the decor and vibe of this place! Lots of old style tables and chairs, a cabinet full of games...I could see spending some time hanging out here! Not sure if it was an off day, but my coffee and my poached egg were cold. They made a fresh pot immediately upon me mentioning the coffee though. It’s too bad I didn’t care at all for the type of coffee or blend they were using. And I noticed a couple of different people walked in and then left because no one was around to help them. Anyways I’ll give them another try because everyone has off days and it is holiday season 😊
Has great vegan options that are also present in their sunday brunch!
Heres a wonderfully funky, innovative space for coffee or snacks.Try the sauerkraut fritters, do yourself a favor! Every other item ordered was delicious, none so unique though!
Sunday brunch was easily one of the best meals I have ever had in my life. The eggs Benedict is off the charts delicious. Will be returning regularly.
Great intimate venue for social food, beer and local musicians. Passing through and would definitely stop here again.
Amazing food, friendly staff. All around a good experience
Went for breakfast with the most beautiful women I met in 20 years. We had the eggs benny and 2 Americana coffees...was to die for .best breakfast Ive had in years along with the company and atmosphere it was heaven..Looking forward to a return engagement.
Cute place, nice food and lovely people!
Always a great place to hang out for honestly, every age. Multiple visits with the most accommodating staff for my kids, warm environment, great food and superb collection of board games!
Absolutely Wonderul! I would categorize this as gourmet cafe fare. I ordered the chicken avacodoe panini with carrot apple soup and my wife ordered the Reuben sandwich with a house salad. The flavors were perfect! You can really tell these owners are serving their customers the best food this side of the railroad tracks. Staff were all very friendly. Decor was a simple country antique with a comfortable atmosphere as if you had been here before. Casual dress code. I will be returning and I would highly recommend The Heartwood Cafe to anyone looking to have a wholesome meal. Did I mention they seve local brewery beer, Hells Basement and Travois, have an outstanding honey lavender latte and sell bone broth!! If I could give this place 10 stars I would. Great job guys! You nailed it!
All I can say is wow!!! I finally went for lunch here today and it was absolutely amazing. They use fresh local ingredients and I was pleasantly surprised with all the healthy wholesome options. The staff was so nice and knew what everything on the menu tasted like. I will definitely be coming here again and will be telling everyone about this hidden gem!!
Food and drinks were on point!! Thanks for refueling us on our cross-country road trip!
As a band on tour, we had the pleasure of playing The Heartwood Café this summer and we highly recommend this gem to bands and audiences alike. From the moment we showed up, we were treated with hospitality and good humour by Jenny and the rest of the staff. The excellent food, attentive audience and overall terrific vibe make The Heartwood a prime spot for live music in Medicine Hat.
Wow. Been through the Hat 50 times! Today we met friends in this charming, eclectic, old towne restuarant for the first time. Here are the stats. Carnivore, omnivore, herbivore. Vegetarian, vegan, plant based. You ALL will be good here. Decor and stats out of the way now....this is what you can expect ....irreverent, casual, friendly staff...who nail front of house! BOH? Dont let the funky style fool you. Some serious cooking chops there. Outstanding soup. Beet salad...truffle fries..plant based burgers and the beef entrees were spot on. If you are sitting on the outside patio facing the Cecil...avert your eyes. You will need to. Just local color showing itself from time to time. We had an amazing time and a great meal!
Great supper with friends. Love the staff. Always fun to kid around with.We have to make it a games night soon. Will definitely recommend Heartwood if you want a good meal and fun friendly atmosphere
First visit, but AMAZING and Im quite sad that I dont live here and cant become a regular patron. Super friendly and relaxed (but attentive!service, the food was fantastic (we had the roasted red pepper soup, edamame and falafel burger and couldnt decide between the truffle oil fries and kimchi fries so she brought us a split order of both! 😊), and we enjoyed the service and feel of the place so much we stayed for lattes (lavender/honey/charcoal, and a regular latte with cashew milkand treats (basil & blueberry muffin)... all of it was just SO good.It will be my go-to spot whenever Im in town. Thanks to Mary-Ellen for suggesting it! 😋❤
Such a cute place and super Celiac safe!! Our first impressions were good, country kitchen decor, mismatch tables and chairs, friendly staff. Israel, our waitress, was amazing! Food was amazing. Had an egg salad sandwich and beet side salad and I was happy and full! Highly recommend
First of all… I have so much to say I’m not even sure what to start with. My partner and I are a connoisseur of local cafés when we travel. We always look for the café that is not a chain. Sometimes those are hits and sometimes they’re not. We were recently in medicine hat for a dance competition for our daughter and looked at the area around us and located Heartwood cafe.It was simply amazing! The server was incredibly patient and knowledgeable as we asked all the usual questions such as… Gluten-free, dairy free, is there honey? Is there quinoa? We are difficult people to serve ;-)Our food was rich and flavorful and most certainly handmade in every aspect. We got warm drinks and homemade lemonade along with desserts to go because we couldn’t not. The lemonade my daughter had Had was Out of this world. But the gluten-free brownie?!! Hands-down the best brownie I have ever had in my 41 years of being alive. I appreciate mindful and ethical and clean eating choices. I love when my food is locally sourced, prepared and served. Heartwood nails this on every front.I spoke with the owner when she was making my drink and she was kind, considerate and thoughtful. The Decor inside reminds me of teatime at my grandmas in a really modern way. So fun and I cannot wait to find a new excuse to go to medicine hat and eat there again soon. Please open another location in lethbridge.
Fantastic (and heathyfood and wonderful service. Jenny created a custom cocktail using a strawberry beer that was delicious. We were even indulged with a “fake” birthday cake & candle, and a colourful unicorn hot chocolate, to entertain our 2 year old nephew. I don’t live in Med Hat, otherwise would for sure be a regular at their games nights! They have some many great board games there- open ones for customer use, and also new ones for purchase (at very fair prices). Highly recommend this place! Apparently many people think it closed since it moved from downtown- hopefully Med Hat locals continue to rediscover the Heartwood Cafe!
Dont let the outside of the store scare you as the inside haa awesome decoration & ambiance. Great food, excellent customer service. Reasonably priced for what you get.Every Wednesday night is date night and theres live music.
This place is a real gem, great food thats not heavy and greasy. They do all kinds of games/date/band nights. They have local beer on tap as well as spirits for cocktails. The diner decor is perfect for the neighborhood. If you havent, give this place a try, it is my favorite in Med Hat.
First time in this place... and we really like it!! Breakfast is very nice and the coffe is very good. The staff ladies are super friendly and very kind, we bring our little baby boy and we have not problems at all to having him there, the atmosfere and the music are very peacefully. I definitely recommend this place and looking forward to come back and try the next on the menu. We also bring home some home made cookies and maple bacon muffins. ♥️
The food was SOOOO GOOD!!!! I am pregnant and many times i feel sick from what i eat but i ordered the homemade soup and ham sandwich and it hit the spot! The waitress was very personal and caring and did not rush us but let us take our time ordering. Best place to eat in medicine hat.
My mom and I were travelling through Medicine Hat and googled healthy restaurants in town. This one came up! We were absolutely amazed by everything at this place. Excellent friendly service, interesting and fun decor and AMAZING food!! I have many dietary restrictions and they were amazing at making all the necessary accommodations. They defintely went above and beyond for me. I ordered the veggie burger and it seriously was the best veggie burger I have ever had. So much delicious flavour! The tomatoe soup was incredible too. It tasted fresh with the right amount of spices and flavour. The live music at lunch was relaxing and fun as well. This will be my stop everytime I come to Medicine Hat. Thank you Heartwood Cafe!! :)
What a fantastic place! My wife and I are on the whole 30 diet, we did it January and September for the past 3 years. This year being on the road for work I thought it would be difficult to continue. The owner and staff at the Heartwood Cafe made a completely new batch of recipes for me to eat there 3 times a day for 3 days. The food was spectacular!!Thanks Meghan and the team at Heartwood.
I LOVE this place! It has healthy vegan options. The kale salad is amazing, vegan burger was very good, vegan brownie was good, wine was yummy. They had live music, it was a young man with a guitar that made the atmosphere perfect.
Love this little gem! The atmosphere is wonderful and the food is delicious and fresh. I believe most items are from scratch on this menu. I just adore their beet salad and crave it often. Bonus is that their coffee and tea selections are heavenly!
Third time here. First time they messed up my food. Second time, I had tea. It was good and tasty. This time, the tea was good until the bottom of the pot....very bitter. The decor reminds me of good Value Village buys, but that probably works enough for Medicine Hat. Its not like his town is at the cutting edge of style.Depending on your perspective.....its a magnet for thirty-something, can-i-speak-to-the-manager-haircut, type women......is either a great thing, or a nightmare.
Ok so first, the place look goods on picture but!!! You really have to go there to appreciate the calm, cozy and the relaxing atmosphere of that awesome place. The food is great and really tasty. The owner is really nice and lovely. This is my new favorite place. Stop by and give it a try you will fall in love
We had a party of 5, the service was quite slow. We order three hot drinks, one coffee was good and the other two tasted burnt. After the wait, the chicken tenders were burnt. The portions were small especially when considering the price. Service was okay however we probably wouldn’t go back.
I love , love ,love this place. From the great atmosphere to the great food.I have ate there 3 separate times and have liked everything I have sampled. Staff is always pleasant and helpful. They have a liquor license and carry both local breweries as well as a Lethbridge brewery. They do specialty coffees and baked goods if you just need a quick bite or you can sit and play board games and eat a meal.If you havent been there yet it is worth checking it out.
I am gluten and dairy-free, and the staff were so helpful with telling me about my options.I ordered the kale walnut salad and the lemon vinaigrette was soo good!If you are gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, vegetarian, or any have any other special food need, I highly suggest this place for a nice and casual place to eat!
The Heartwood Cafe has the grandma vibes down-pat. The only thing thats missing is receiving a knitted sweater after being seated. The restaurant is decorated with vintage pieces, such as a typewriter, tacky old cans and dusty books. I ordered your classic eggs with bacon and toast, which really hit the spot. Wasnt a big fan of their homade ketchup though. If Im ever in Medicine Hat again (which Im doubtful aboutI will definitely visit this granny pad once more.
Was just in town for the weekend, and decided to stop by after a morning of biking and museums. Fantastic place - I had the quiche and green salad, my partner had an egg salad sandwich and beet side salad. Ingredients were very fresh. Everything was absolutely phenomenal - great food, great iced teas, great service. Highly recommended - and even if youre just passing by, its well worth the short drive off the highway to downtown.
I ordered food from Heartwood for pick up during a recent stay in Medicine Hat. Once I got there, I began to wish I was eating in so I could absorb the atmosphere a bit longer. The smoky, eerie sky outside, the amazing music inside, and the Old Alberta decor had me close to tears of joy. They even packed my food in mostly compostable packaging- the cherry on top, if you will! Check it out!
Always a great dining experience. Such a unique place to eat. I love it. Roasted Beet Salad is my favourite.
I can definitely see this being a nice place to go with people. I went on my own just to check it out. The staff were nice and I was surprised to find how quiet it was on a Saturday evening. I saw boardgames and darts along the walls. As a place to stop in for a bite to eat, there may be better places to go but if you want somewhere that has a good atmosphere and options to do things it may be a good place to hang out with people. Just not alone. 😋
Love the new location! Great little cafe and the ambiance is very relaxed and welcoming. Always enjoy eating there - especially their tomato soup and egg sandwich. Great coffee and selection of teas.
Chickpea burger and the Beyond burger, both equally fantastic. We started with a cup of the vegan cabbage soup and shared a kale Ceasar salad which was worth the hour and a half trip to try. A well spent Saturday looking for vegan options. The entire staff were friendly and knowledgeable. It was a great feeling to find vegan options without having to adapt the menu...and usually explain what is and is not exceptible for a vegan options. To top it off there was three vegan dessert choices... We chose all three and loved every bit. Great place great food!!! Updated info May 17/2018 patio is expected to be ready in the near future. Great food outside...perfect combo.
Just visited the new location on North Railway. They have exceptional food and friendly service unfortunately trapped in a poorly put together dining room. Clashing colors, disconnected decor, and very little attention to detail. It’s clear they were going for eclectic, but didn’t quite nail it. Still worth the stop though!
This is a great place to go for coffee/tea or a meal with your friends. Beautifully decorated. Friendly and helpful staff. The owners are lovely. The food is delicious. Great presentation. Their new location is homey and inviting. I really enjoyed the beetroot salad and rooibos tea the last time I was in. Hoping our community makes this little cafe leave their mark on this town! Go give it a try. Youll be glad you did.
First time here and very happy to see an establishment of this variety in this neighborhood.Revitalization is based on available social environments with a multiple ways of catering to its guests. The Heartwood Café does this splendidly!Heres to the railway district being brightened even further.Thank you for the pleasant experience.
I love this place! they have recently moved from their downtown location and with the move brought many new great things. One of the best things for me is the longer hours. I was rarely able to make it down before because they closed before I was done work but now they are open late! Also the expanded menu is awesome.I would recommend the Breakfast Pizza and a cinnamon latte if going in the morning. If heading down in the evening I would recommend then German Pizza!!! and "The London". I cant say enough great things.Lots of vegetarian options and gluten free stuff too.
Love the atmosphere and food. Wasnt to happy first time I was there while 4 staff were giggling and chatting a few feet from till when there were four seperate people waiting to order. And our plates stuck to the plastic table covers making it a disaster to eat and spilling drinks. I get the reason buy ruins experience. I would just paint the tables and ditch the covers and plastic. But have still recommended it and will continue to come. Just some kinks that need to be worked on
Great place for food that not only tastes fantastic, but looks equally appetising. There creations are unique and healthy, with options for gluten intolerant people and vegetarians/vegans. Even when some of my meal wasnt tasting right, they corrected it without hesitation, and thats something many food establiments lack when it comes to service. Great place. Will be coming back again.
