Kom Ghorab, Old Cairo, Cairo Governorate, Egypt, Al Jizah
Coptic Orthodox church with a wooden roof in the shape of Noah's ark, a 5th-century pulpit & icons.
One of the most important church in all over Egypt you can find it in the old Cairo it has this name because was built above a fortress of babylonia.
We imagined the hanging church is hanging with some cables 😄Its a nice, special church that we cant see in Europe. The architecture is special, mixing orthodox, arabic. We saw some priests who live here, some special wooden chairs, nice paintings, etc. The church is very small. We are not Christian so... thats all.
Interesting spot in the Copt Cairo. For free. Worthed a visit.
We visited this church in 1993 while we were staying in Giza. A beautiful church with history dating back to the 9th Century built on the site of a much more modest church in the 3rd century. We were told the Holy family sheltered here during their flight thru Egypt. This was confusing , how could this be when the original was not built until the 3rd Century ? We understand the alter stone was from another church were the Holy Family did shelter. The other theory is the church was built on the space where the Holy Family did shelter during their flight. Either way this is a historic building that has an ambience of its own and is definitely worth a visit.
If youre looking for a church with a bit of history, the Hanging Church is well worth a visit. Its one of the oldest churches in Cairo, and its said to be named for its location above a Coptic cemetery. The church is also known for its beautiful architecture and its collection of icons and religious paintings.Make sure to go inside and check out the decorations - theyre really incredible.Theres no entrance fee, but it can be a bit difficult to find. Just look for the crowds of people and youll know youre in the right place. If youre looking for a unique and interesting experience while in Cairo, be sure to visit The Hanging Church..
A beautiful, historical church with a lot of amazing artifacts. Really enjoyed our visit.
BLESSED CHURCH FOR SAINT MARY,VERY NICE PRESERVED COPTIC ARCHITECTURE....BESIDE THE COPTIC MUSEUM....HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
The ground of the church was that it was the very place where Jesus and Mary hid in Egypt. The church is very uniquely built with absolutely gorgeous architecture. It is called the hanging church because the whole church is situated on two towers with no basis on the ground at all. Also, the oldest church in Egypt, it’s free to visit. The beauty of this church was mesmerizing. Definitely a do visit place.

A church with an interesting, unique architecture. You will understand only when you go in and move around. Workers are very nice and friendly, they let us see around even if the museum was actually closed.

Ancient Coptic Church with beautifully-crafted artwork.
Loved it! Stayed for prayer service and make sure to wear a shirt with sleeves (short or long is ok, no tank tops). This church in case you dont know is Coptic Orthodox. Free to go in!
Old churches holding within many sacred and holy tools that were used by saints or used to torture them.
Absolutely woth it to visit this iconic church. Its all an experience to connect with spiritual history as well as great architecture work to preserve such memory.
Cool place to visit. Amazing history.
A very interesting place to visit and learn of the history surrounding this area.
Unbeknownst to me, the church is built over the grounds where Mary and baby Jesus hid while in Egypt. The church is ancient and found inside are many reliques, such as the bones of many martyred saints. Its a place to pray as well as a tourist attraction.
An incredible historical place to wonder back in time. Built over palm trees in the ancient times and it’s still stand above the ground! Well kept and well maintained with such strong energy can be felt inside. Mary’s ‘monalisa’ eyes that watches over you in blessing. Still an active church for prayers. Free entry. Must see!
The Suspended Church, or Al-Moallaqa, is another name for the Hanging Church. Because it was erected atop the Roman Fortresss southern gate, it is known as the Hanging Church. As a foundation, logs of palm trees and layers of stones were built atop the ruins of the Roman fortification. The Hanging Chapel is a one-of-a-kind church with a wooden roof shaped like Noahs ark. The Coptic Patriarch lived in the Hanging Church from the seventh through the thirteenth centuries. Important elections and religious rituals have taken place in Al-Moallaqa.Al-Moallaqa is linked to the renowned miracle of shifting the Moqattam Mountain. Patriarch Abraham (975-978), the 62nd Patriarch, was asked by Al-Muizz, a Fatimid khaliph, to verify the veracity of a Bible text. Al-Muizz requested that Patriarch Abraham move the Moqattam Mountain in order to demonstrate the gospels words, "If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, Remove from here to yonder place, and it shall remove" (Matthew 17-20).Following three days of prayer and fasting in front of a portrait of the Virgin Mary on a column in al-Moallaqa, the Virgin Mary came to Patriarch Abraham in a vision and informed him what to do. There is a picture of the Virgin Mary.
One word for this place... FantasticHighly recommended and would strongly suggest you have a Tour Guide.. well worth the extra cost.
This is a must visit place in egypt. It has some great history associated to it from alexanders and romans. Unlike the Pharaohs, this is a great variety of history to learn from in Egypt. The staff is really amazing. They offer free tours for the sake of GOD. There is some repair work also going on there but overall, a great place to visit.
Oldest church in Egypt and also called as hanging church because it has little support with the Ground. A must visit place for all visitors those who visiting cairo.

Certainly worth adding to your list of must see places in Cairo.
Very beautiful church with amazing history behind it and beautiful architecture, the church is called the hanging church because the whole church is situated on two towers with no basis on the ground at all, and it’s the oldest church in Egypt, it’s free to visit and i do highly recommend it.
A incredibly well built, well maintained church in cairo, egypt. The historic and religious significance of this church is unfathomable.
The church is beautiful, situated in the religious site with three prominent sacred places for all three religion. A must visit.
While approaching the church from the street you can’t see anything that could explain its name (Hanging Church). It is actually built on top of the ruins of an old Roman tower. The tower, part of the former Roman fortress of Babylon, is nowadays still visible through a small window in the church’s floor. However, the ruins of another tower from the citadel of Babylon can be spotted between the Hanging Church and the Coptic Museum, located nearby, on the same street. The religious artifacts exposed in the church are antique and of great artistic value, its like visiting a museum. The icon of Saint Mercurius and the one of Saint Nofer are among the most valuable pieces. Although the Coptic paintings exhibited here look a bit different from the Orthodox paintings of the Greek or Romanian churches, the visitor can detect the Byzantine touch.Despite the recent renovation of the entire complex, the time capsule feeling is present. Its like travelling in time to the beginning of the Christian era, somewhere around Jerusalem. The ambiance is so serene, despite the groups of tourists and pilgrims.
Great and worthy place to visit to see the wonderful architecture of the hanging church. You can see the history in front of your own eyes...
A Beautiful & sacred place, the old coptic church is named the hanging church as it is built above a gatehouse of the babylon fortress & suspended over a passage, lots of saints and martyrs remains are there also, a must visit.
Gorgeous church with very unique woodwork and architecture. The story is amazing and it has been well kept for its age. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you are a history buff.
Beautiful and serene, very relaxing and different.Volunteers there to give information, not guides, not looking for money just share their knowledge. The canteen is a small shop but with a good selection.
1 minute walk from Mar Girgis Station.3 places to see there specifically : The Hanging Church, Coptic Museum and Market which is little beneath the church its kind of a small colonial road which sells variety of books, heritage shops and many options for eating as well.Hanging Church is built on the Fortress of Babylon which I came to know after reading about it in detail. When you enter church you can literally see the transparent glasses in which you can see the height at which the church is hanging above the fort.Entry to the fort is prohibited but church is open for all.Very authentic and unique kind of construction.
For more understanding of Egypt history… you should try visiting the 7 churches in this area… what a mix of culture and history in an extremely rich context… even the synagogue there is mixing between 3 religions.A must see
Christian spiritual hearth of Alexandria Built over roman ancient fortress. Three Worlds meeting in a Churchill. Must visit and sit to recharge your soul a bit
A very old and amazing church, its the most remarkable coptic place in cairo, there is many nearby historical and antiquarian places but the Hanging church is the iconic one.
Beautiful ancient Church. Went with a tour guide who took us around the place. Very interesting history behind
So glad I made it here. Murals on the walls in the courtyard before the church are amazing. Met some believers from all over the world here! As part of the Coptic area it is a breath of fresh air to know others believe in Christ as their savior as well and to cherish that. Spent some time praying inside.
Situated in the Coptic area of Cairo, it is safe to visit, the access being controlled by the army; throughout the journey we were accompanied by armed civilians.
This beautiful church is called Saint Virgin Marys Coptic Orthodox Church. This is one of the oldest churches in Egypt. It is said to have been built in the third century. The services of a guide are essential, if you want to really enjoy its architecture and history. The inside of the church looks like an overturned ark, if you look at the ceiling. There are 13 beautiful pillars which are said to represent Jesus and his apostles. There is a very muslim look about the church, specially the screens which have ivory and ebony work on them. The tiny crosses on them, are reminders that this is a Christian church. There is also a beautiful painting of the Virgin Mary, known popularly as the "Coptic Monalisa".Entrance here is free and there are clean and well maintained washrooms as well. I really loved the church, not only for the history, but also for the bright jewel like colors in the icons and stained glass windows.
I was somewhat concerned that Ill have difficulty finding this beauty but it was reasonably easy with google maps.Old, beautiful, and busy but worth the visit. Within a complex of other architecturally delightful buildings. Stop and marvel, there arent many others like this in the world.
The Hanging Church is the most famous Coptic Christian church in Cairo and the official residence of the Coptic Pope since1047. The reason for the colloquial name of Hanging Church comes from ancient times when the church was much higher up relative to the ground, which has risen up 6 feet to its present height.Inside, the church is beautifully decorated in the traditional Coptic style with lots of geometric patterns for tiles and screens, a Coptic high altar with a screen inlaid with ivory that is carved into segments showing several Coptic Cross designs and a Coptic style pulpit. Arrayed along the walls of the nave are relics from saints. The steps from the courtyard into the church is particularly photogenic and a popular photo spot. One of the many churches in Coptic Cairo that should be on any itinerary to this part of Cairo.
Really liked this koptic church, we can see both Greek and Arabic influence in the architecture. The top of the church is designed as Noahs ark. They have some really great paintings. They area is peaceful and very well preserved.
So impressed with what I saw. The holy sites, the holy symbols of the Coptic Church and early Christians. Egypt sure do have a great history the religion and colonialism destroyed. There the real tree trunks that held the hanging Church in place. Offer prayers for the less privileged there too. The ornaments of hermits and saints. Controlled environment, secured and valued. Traffic is light. You just have to go and see the history or the early church in Egypt ( in Africa). The museum has a lot of history about early Christian symbols and artifacts. First written scriptures in Coptic and Arabic. Early golden coins, holy vessels and antiques. Early Christians fabrics and writings on stones, bones, fabrics and woods.
Great significance! Not exactly a must visit, but if you are already in Coptic Cairo, you may as well take a look inside. Great photos of the Virgin Mary and Jesus and other prominent people related to the Christian faith
Great place to visit if youre interested in Coptic Cairo. Amazing art and the inside place of worship has a lot of great history. Would recommend you have a guide woth you to explain the stories. Popular spot - was the busiest of places we visited on a Coptic Cairo tour.
