Beer lover's pub with craft ales, microbrews and bat-shaped taps, also serving ribs and hotdogs.
Good range of beers, service was a bit hit-and-miss, food fine. Would visit again for just beer
No worries, guys; you just ignore me during a quiet period - Im more than happy to go elsewhere. Good luck with the cost of living crisis in combination with your woeful customer service. 👍
Decent enough beer, bit pricey though and slow disinterested service. Its possible it thinks its cooler than it is
Excellent selection of beers, and nice atmosphere
Amazing bar, with nice people and great variety of beers! The small bites plates were also tasty!
Good beer selection and very helpful & friendly staff, good atmosphere overall but the only thing that was a bit of a let-down was the food which was (I hate to way thislike a bit worse version of the fare served at wetherspoons.Definitely worth a visit for drinks though and Im sure the food hits the spot after half a dozen pints.
Got off the airplane and made my way straight here as it was near my hotel. First hour in Scotland. Pretty cool little place. Being Canadian I waited for a server to come by... But they dont. Have to go to the bar to order food and drink. Youre welcome other North Americans. Not a ton of seating so I imagine on a weekend its certainly standing room only. Lots of beer on tap to choose from
Excellent gluten free burger with an excellent bun. They had a whole gluten free menu and not one, but two gluten free beers on draft! Very welcoming to dogs. Service superb: professional and friendly. Excellent fries too. Very lucky to have this place in Edinburgh.
The selection of beers is good and has a nice atmosphere, however we were disappointed by the food. We got the steak club which was really dry and tough. The bat wings were OK in flavour, but again the meat was tough. Would visit here again but just for drinks.
The food was pretty bad. There is no way that the beef in the beef stew was stewed. Fries were cold and the steak in the steak club was flavorless and extra tough.
This is a quirky big bar! The decor is very fun and grungy. Service is a little slow, but what bar isn’t. They have a great list of beers available, and they serve food pretty late. They do have a big menu as well, that should appease to all. The item we ordered did leave some more taste to be desired, but it served us well in our time of haziness.
Great floor plan with lots of seating. Good selection of draft beers, including house-made and local craft brewery options. We arrived shortly after opening on a weekday and must have come at a tough time as there was a roof/rain leak, kitchen was closed indefinitely and one of the cask ales had soured. From the other reviews it sounds like this is usually an awesome spot. Would love to give it a second shot when were back in town. Cheers!
Great place for a casual drink with pals but the food needs an upgrade. Sorry to say these were sad burgers all round. Also no basic sauces were offered (no bbq sauce or brown sauce!!Luckily weve had a few decent drinks to wash them down with...
Its okay. I expected to love it here based on other reviews but it should be far better than it is. Vibes were weird - bizarre music choices (Beatles followed by some weird electro?), sticky tables, the barman was quite frankly rude, and the menu on the wall was super high up and hard to read. Print some paper menus for whats on draft, or have it available online, come on!
Came across The Hanging Bat after searching "craft beer places" while walking around Edinburgh, and let me tell you: This place rocks. They have so much variety on draft, in cans and in bottles. Its spacious, and they serve good food. Its far enough away from the main stretch so that its not swamped by other tourists, but still very, very easy to reach. Plus, the bartender on duty — whose name I unfortunately didnt get — was more than willing to talk to me about all of the beers they had, whether made locally in Scotland or elsewhere in Europe (I visited in the early afternoon when it wasnt too crowded just yet, otherwise I wouldnt dare waste his time). He really took his time to discuss beers he liked, and beers he thought I might like. I mean, you could totally tell he knew what he was doing and that he was just damn good at his job. I ended up starting with Staring Contest, a collab between HB and Loch Lomond Brewery, which was beyond great. Just overall a fantastic experience. If I ever make it back to Edinburgh, Hanging Bat will be my first stop.
If you like craft beers, the hanging bat has got you covered. The staff is very nice, the place is spacious and cosy, the food is great, go visit them when in Edinburgh!
One of the worst experiences I’ve ever had in a pub. Asked for a cheap beer with my girlfriend as I didn’t have my glasses so couldn’t read the badly written chalk sign. I was given a 12 quid 2/3rds of a pint and shown the card machine without being told the price. I immediately tried to get a refund only to be given a smug response by some hipster assistant manager who couldn’t cut it at primark.
Very friendly pub with an energetic busy vibe. It has a table service policy, unless you want to sit at the bar. Not my first choice but it seemed to work very well. I sat at the bar and was well looked after. Impressive array of keg and cask ale and some very interesting spirits (Speyside tequilia!? - it was really good).
Excellent place to eat and have a drink. The food is very tasty and the portions were great for the price (I got the small chilli con carne, and my boyfriend got the Hanging Bat Burger). There was a plethora of beers from draft beer to canned beer (some of the cans had really nice art on themin a variety of prices. I personally got an oatmeal stout recommended to me in the bar after I accidentally picked up an over my budget beer 😅 Thank you for the great suggestion the beer was great. 🍻🍺🍔🌯
Very nice atmosphere with some funky exposed brickwork and fancy lights. Huge selection of beers, although I was disappointed to find only one cider! Nonetheless, the cider was very good; only two thirds of a pint though! The toilets were also very trendy.
🦇🍺Well its rated one of the best pubs, but I think thats based on style alone, a hipster trying to be cool but not quite pulling it off.Its interesting enough (or tries to beas long as you dont want a full pint and just 3/4ths.
Nice bar, huge beer selection, would recommend checking the beer list in advance bc it’s a little overwhelming. Nice staff + ambience
Stay at home is good advice from COVID times. This place has not washed its ice machine or glasses since 2018. Charging the world but dropping the standing please stay at home and dont go here.
Excellent bar for burgers/sandwiches, beer and cocktails. Huge selection of both canned and on-tap beers, changing during the evening at times. Tasty cocktails even for the more tricky drinks like Old Fashioned. The food selection is a bit more restricted than for some more "touristy" locations, but what they do they do well.Food+drinks are self service, but service is quick and very friendly.
the mac and cheese was one of the worst things i’ve ever eaten in my life. it was bland putrid cheese soup with a few pieces of pasta, that could be drunk through a straw. the three other meals ordered at my table were also sub par, dry and bland. you couldn’t pay me to eat here again. i’m not even disappointed i’m absolutely disgusted. save your money and don’t eat here. staff also dismissive and frankly rude.
asked the Barman for a pint of Lager and was presented with a glass of beer(which tasted like pond watermore fitting to a dolls house..... when l asked said Barman about the size of contents.... he said its 3/4 of a pint..... man in the 80s & 90s this place used to be class but now being run by swindlers, and they wonder why the place is dead.....
Amazing selection of beers and a giant list of great starters to snack on - the staff was very accommodating and the back garden was quite cozy.
Fantastic beer selection, great music, great food. Atmosphere buzzing. Staff know what theyre on about.
Awesome food, drinks, and general vibe. But I may be biased as a huge fan of Batman and punk music.
Great choice of beers. We ordered beef stew and fish & chips which were decently prepared too.
This place had a nice vibe and friendly staff that knows there stuff. They have tap and cask beer, and also a huge selection of Vans and bottels. We did eat here, initially they forgot my side of chips and our two meals were far apart timewise, but the food was tasty
Atmosphere is bright and eclectic. Not overly noisy nice atmosphere. Fish and chips overcooked, fried completely hollow inside.
I have been there three days ago with my girlfriend and our experience was not the best. We ordered the chilli with rice and tortillas and the chicken club sandwich. The chilli was absolutely tasteless as it was the rice. The chicken club sandwich would have been nice if it wasnt for the chicken being burnt. The only good note were the parmisan and aioli fries which were very nice.Overall it was a very underwhelming experience.
Loved the vibes of this place. Right up my alley. Was not prepared for the MASSIVE selection of canned beers. I didn’t have time to pull up the full menu with the QR code, but I’m sure I would have had some paralysis by analysis. Too many options! Some of the draft beer was being switched out when I ordered, so I ended up with a milkshake ipa. Not my favorite, but still pretty tasty. Service was friendly, and again…huge beer selection. Not a huge whisky offering though, so FYI there.
Sadly when a member of our groups rack of ribs was barely warm, the restaurant only returned it no warmer after 5minutes. We asked for a fresh dish but the staff said theyd only cook a new rack and in pathetic defiance not 3 small onion rings, the salad or the childs portion of fries to provide a proper dish. Other dishes were a bit steeply priced for what was received, everyones fries were rock solid and impossible to get on forks as they were all blunt, all contributing to the 2star rating.
Ive now been to this place three times, first out of curiosity based the reviews, the other two out of lack of choice of late night openings in the area. Entirely unclear why this is dubbed the best pub in Edinburgh. It has no resemblance with a pub, the staff is inattentive and some of them rude (particularly the tall bold guy), the drinks menu overpriced given their choice of beers. Not returning, Id literally rather go home instead. Total tourist trap.
Great beer and good people. The fish and chips werent too bad either.
The food was fantastic, the beer (and choicewas spot on. To top it off, the staff were friendly and knew their stuff.
I love this bar. It has a great atmosphere, superb (i.e. very expensivebeer and music. The draft beer menu is carefully curated and constantly updated (google “Bat Taps Twitter”). The staff are great too. Although they can be grumpy sometimes when its really busy with stupid, drunk punters 😉
Amazing craft beer bar, excellent selection of beers and very knowledgeable and helpful staff
Had lunch here midweek & was very quiet. On the main Lothian Road. Stands out from outside but doesnt look like like a pub or bar.Quite large inside spread over a number of different levels & more "pub like". Wasnt very obvious what choices of beer they had but whilst I was looking round spotted bottles of Tegenseer in the fridge which I like so went for one of those. There are maps on the walls showing where their beer comes from but a simple menu would have been fine. I ordered a hotdog will chilli, mustard etc & barman seemed to take an age messing with a tablet before the order was processed.Disappointingly the bottle of beer wasnt properly chilled. Food was very nice & made for very substantial lunch. Not bowled over with this first visit maybe just bad timing & am willing to try again when next in Edinburgh.
Really nice choice of beers and loved that they gave you a wee taster so you could try before you buy! Quirky wee place but we tried to order food and were told the kitchen isnt working which was disappointing. We also had bought Groupon vouchers the day before which werent honoured due to this. Bit of a let down!
The app for table service is slow and weird, the service itself was a little dismissive. We asked for a "glass of water" on the app comments and to two different servers for no avail. The tap beer was brilliant though.
Very good selection of beers, both in keg and in cask. The food is really good as well, we had the onion rings and the chilli cheese fries and loved it. Fantastic pub.
Great place for a beer, always rotating lines, tap takeovers, very friendly and knowledgeable service. Quirky decor and good facilities in general, smoking area out back. Snacks and bar food available. Great place for a swifty on your own, a date, or a group. It gets very busy at points, seating goes fast, so pick your time well. Always impressed keep the beers coming!!
What a gem! If you’re into craft beer this place is a must!!! They have a wide selection of beers for all tastes and the atmosphere is wonderful. Big chesterfields and lots of tables downstairs as well as lots more seating upstairs. The have a small food menu that is reasonably priced. We had a large pulled pork nacho and it was big enough for two.Dog friendly and the staff are friendly too.
Super cozy pub, perfect to chat with friends, different places to drink inside with different themes, awesome casket beers for you to try out so you can have a break from Guinness and Brewdog a little. Staff was super nice too and price was super cheap for the quality of those beers, price was displayed for half-pint, and I encourage you drinking half-pints, so you could try other casket beers.
Amazing beer pub, often changing selection of fresh craft beers, which they tweet on a weekly basis. The food selection is also nice and the bar staff can recommend some weird and wonderful draughts, you can even have a wee taster. There are 3 levels of seating area plus a large bar area so you can come alone or with a larger group.
We had ribs, chicken wings, chips and some very strong Belgian beers (11% !!).Loved the experience and almost had to crawl out!Highly recommended. The barman who was ending his work there gave me a sip of the Tzatziki beer.... really interesting sour beer.
This is an amazing pub with a great selection of craft beers from a variety of breweries across the country. This includes both cask and keg. It is very beer centric, although they had some decent ciders in the bottle fridge too. The decor is cool, including the toilets even, with beer barrel urinals and hand pull taps! Thoroughly recommended
