The Greene Oak, Oakley Green, Windsor SL4 5UW, United Kingdom, Tougue
Country gastropub with ceiling beams and flagstone floors, contemporary decor and a garden terrace.
My husband and I visited the Greene Oak as part of a party of 6 on Sunday for lunch. We had not visited the Greene Oak since the start of the pandemic, so were eager to return for a lovely roast.Standards have certainly slipped since our last visit. Despite having plenty of front of house staff the service was still poor, upon arrival we were ignored at reception for some time, drinks were forgotten, long waits to clear plates, it all felt very amateurish. The food has certainly changed since our last visit, and not for the better, cold plates and small portions. We will not be visiting again and I would urge you to take your custom elsewhere.
Arrived for Sunday lunch to a very busy and buzzy pub with a warm welcome from the manager.Sadly that was the last of the warmth. Both roast beef lunches came out cold. Two slices of cold meat, on cold plates, covered in cold gravy with, cold Yorkshire pudding and cold pigs in blankets. We asked the table staff to exchange it for hot food ..no apology was offered. The plates came out again , and the food (and plateswere just as cold as the first ones. The manager offered no apology, and said in a sarcastic tone “if your food has come out cold twice, I don’t think the next time will meet your expectations either”At this point we left. So, if you like your food cold, with management that don’t care, this is the place for you! (Customers can do sarcasm too)
Lovely pub indoors and outdoors. Really nice atmosphere, great food with a lot of choice and friendly staff. I would recommend it!
Food good was nice to meet up there with good friends. Wine really nice. Staff really friendly
We went here today having seen they’d recently won an award and weren’t disappointed. Great service from start to finish and really tasty, we’ll cooked interesting food, reasonably priced - an all round great experience. We’ll definitely be coming back 👍
Absolutely fabulous place. A beautiful outdoor location. The staff couldn’t have been friendlier and more helpful. Everyone of our group (7 of usLOVED every bit of our meal! Definitely recommend! Oh and the singer with the acoustic guitar was AMAZING! Great voice, not too loud and we loved his choice of songs (esp Oasis!)
From its lofty “can I help you..?” Lack of welcome at the door to its indifferent and inattentive delivery of a frankly lacklustre meal I found myself wondering what on earth I was doing there. I can accept a little sneering from a place that serves an exclusive gourmet meal, it’s quite common in Paris for waiters to be surly… but not in the shallow end of Windsor…I rarely have to return a meal as unsatisfactory and if I should then I would expect a good deal more humility and willingness to put right something that has been such a grave disappointment. I would also expect the bill to be adjusted to just include the wine which was whilst expensive for a simple Merlot entirely satisfactory. I will not be troubling this establishment with my entirely unwelcome presence again.
A lovely restaurant but it’s so expensive for just a drink. Have to say the service can be awful. Have stopped going there.
Staff were excellent but no burgers on the menu as was a Sunday. Didnt want a whole roast, just a burger 🤣
We love going to the Green Oak. We are so lucky it is our local pub.The staff is so friendly, enthusiastic and caring. Thank you to Ria, Andrea and Grégoire for always looking after us so well. The food is amazing and there is a nice garden. This pub is highly recommended.
The green Oak, is one of the best pubs/restaurants in Windsor. The staff are very attentive and knowledgeable about their wines and real ale.The food is tasty and nicely presented.I would highly recommend the Green Oak.
I stopped in the early afternoon while exploring the area, and ended up sitting and enjoying some coffee and a snack. Fiona was lovely, and very attentive to my needs. I ended by making arrangements to to bring my husband back to dinner that evening!
Lunch on rainy day - random selection from six pubs in area visiting. Winner.Friendly staff, nicely set out and large garden area. Food was great and £21 for two courses, good value. Will return
Another 👌🏼 meal out here, this time with family visiting from Belgium. Beef shin and aioli pasties, steak tartar that you can trust and a hearty pint of our local Guardsman, who could ask for better!? Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and a special mention to our waiters with the incredible memory: we know we were fussy and didn’t order much, but you really did help make our night a fun one, thank you. Didn’t catch your name but we were on the round table, booked for 6 in name of Hiney. We’ll be back... 😁
Amazing service. The best filet steak I’ve ever eaten. Thanks so much for finishing of a perfect birthday weekend.
A great local pub, exciting menu, friendly and engaging staff. Went as party of four on a travel zoo deal. All the party loved it.
Sorry that this has taken three months to write but my family and I visited the pub at the end of May after a trip to Legoland. It was straight after the park had closed and the children were beside themselves hungry. We walked in and we’re informed they were booked up and couldn’t seat us for 45mins. Grand/Parents were dismayed and not being locals unsure of what to do to get the children fed quicker. The manager clearly saw our distress and rallied his staff to clear down a suitable table inside (it was a cool eveningto sit all eight of us. The food was absolutely lovely (though if you have beige eating children like mine it may not be to their liking 😳🙄), brought out quickly with fabulous service. The waitstaff went above and beyond to entertain our flagging 6,5 and two 2yo children. The only mild downsides were we couldn’t stay for a drink/longer due to beds calling and the prices were a little high (I’m a tighter Northerner 😝. Perfectly acceptable for the area/quality).
Excellent set lunch menu - highly recommended for £24! Steak Tartare, Oysters and Plaice! Fantastic Summer Menu.
We had a family gathering at the Greene Oak. Their organisation of a big group with various issues caused by health and travel issues was outstanding. The food was excellent, the surroundings lovely and the service from all staff of a very high standard. We were never rushed as in some venues and everyone had a great time. Thank you very much.
What a smashing place! We went for a little birthday dinner, sat outside in a well kept, large patio garden, the garden furniture was good quality, plus there was plenty of shade. Staff were very attentive and hospitable. The food was really fresh, full of flavour. Ample parking on site. Nice clean modern toilets!
We had the BEST dining experience at this pub. The 5* reviews are well founded. The food was divine, the manager was incredible and personally gave us recommendations from the menu that turned out to be pretty perfect (get the shepherds pie. Just do it.All the staff who spoke with us were incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and source of the food & alcohol as well as just being incredibly friendly. Would also highly recommend the "gimlet" cocktail, I had one which was made by Diego - another gem of a staff member at this place! Can genuinely say, this was the best pub/gastro-pub dining experience I have ever had and I would highly recommend a visit! We hope to be back soon :)
Great venue but te chef wouldnt give us melted cheese. Found tis a bit snobby for what it is.PLUS the menu doesnt have any easy food on it. Nice food but nothing easy.Staff a bit hard to work out although attentive and professional.I would go back for te outdoor and indoor spaces and good drinks selection.
The meal was tasty, waiting staff were very good. ‘Supplement and sides’ charges ruined it for me and the meal is small without extras compared to what I pay elsewhere with sides included. Sorry guys…
Food was nice, a better choice of starters would be good in my opinion. Tables were very sticky, waiter said it was the sanitation product. I would recommend finding another product that prevents your arms sticking to the table
Just had the perfect Sunday late afternoon/early evening here! Food & drinks were amazing, but the service was even better! Will be back soon 🙂
It was clear we weren’t welcome. I know we weren’t wearing our Sunday best; we had a rough day at Legoland due to the hotel fire and just wanted some dinner. We were ignored and talked down to for 15 minutes until we got the hint and left.
Went for lunch, well priced and good quality. I had the oysters which were fresh and tasty, followed by a vegetable risotto. Friendly staff and pleasant surroundings. Definitely worth a visit
Great food and friendly staff. Went there when we had family visiting and we all enjoyed the evening.
A fantastic Sunday lunch at this venue, will definitely be back again. Bottomless champagne brunch is also advertised at a reasonable price which I would love to come and try soon.I did learn from a member of staff that this pub is not actually a part of the Greene King chain, which explained why the food was so good. I think it is a shame that this venue has the attachment to the Greene King brand, and it’s a name I would usually avoid had I not have attended on this occasion with a friend who had booked.
We went here for food friday 24/06 compliments to the chef beautiful food. But it was front of house staff that let the place down as my partner paid the bill and was walking out he heard one of the blokes say are you sure they have paid make sure it gone through. We had just travel 5hours to get to windsor and looked tired we just wanted food (nothern accentsa clear example of classism in 2022 wont be visiting again.
I had a great night at the Green Oak with my wife on our Anniversary. This is not a fine dinning gastro pub but it is good food with large portions. The menu offers a wide choice with options that you dont see on other pub menus such as Rabbit which both my wife and I had. It was very good and made a really nice change to the pub classics. We also had an excellent Tart Tartan for desert which I could have eaten twice over. We even got a free desert thrown in for free as it was our Anniversary. It is not cheap but you certainly get what you pay for. The rooms are nicely decorated and the place has a really nice atmosphere. The service was good and the guy serving us had a great sense of humor which added to the enjoyment of the evening. It is not up to the heights of the Crown and the Hinds Head in Bray but I would certainly recommend giving this place a try.
Convenient location, good ambience, friendly & helpful staff. Free parking.Food & drinks top quality but VERY expensive!(Meal & drinks for family of three, approx £80).Note: Service charge included at 10%.
Great gastro pub.The food offer is excellent. Everything is prepared to high standard with good quality ingredients. Service is attentive and discreet.I have been twice for lunch and will be coming back if I am in the area again.
Excellent food and a fantastic selection of wines, especially the fine wines available by the glass, awesome! The food was delicious and definitely a cut above most pub menus. The beef shin pasties were really good!We didnt dine in the outside area but it looked perfect for the summer months! The staff were very friendly and helpful. Its a shame we are not local, but we will certainly come back if we are ever in the area again.
Simple pub food prepared to a very high standard. The burger just melted in my mouth and the staff were on point too. Lovely outdoor seating area. Ideal stop off on the way home from Legoland.
Amazing food and attentive staff
What a lovely restaurant with a friendly staff and incredible food. This is a must go if you bring family from abroad.Ideal for: Everyone willing to experience a great British food set menu.Key Info: The options available are limited but the food was fantastic, we were surprised, I have to give my congratulations to the chef and our waitress was very good serving us.Pros:- Concise menu.- 5 stars service.- Amazing taste.- A very British pub.- Free car park available.- Well decorated.- Ultra clean toilets and facilities.Cons:- Short availability for the beers menu.
Stunning "set lunch" menu and incredible value - the food is amazing! Spacious interior with several different sections so it retains a "small restaurant" feel, with a large, covered outside dining area too.
Good atmosphere and good food, drinks are reasonably priced. Waiters were excellent too, good service but not too intrusive. Will definitely be returningWould have liked slightly more variation on menu, but the menus available online anyway,
Went there for early dinner with a Travelzoo promo. Amazing food and friendly service!
Came in for late lunch. They offer a variety of food that i like from starters to mains. Comfort food for me! Most of their serving had a twist that makes dining experience surprisingly delightful and flavourful. Will be back!
Tasty food (can be bigger in portionand good space for group gatherings. The urinals in the men’s toilet are at adequate height.
Called in here on recommendation of a local, I was collecting some Jag parts, a journey from Cheshire had made me hungry! Sat outside under a large canopy, was served faultlessly with beer, great food and dessert. Ollie the collie was served sausages in his own bowl too so he was most pleased. 2 horseboxes converted into seating looks cosy and a nice idea, adding to the already lovely beer garden. Food was excellent, even a simple burger was clearly created with skill, and chips cooked correctly! Service was perfect, thanks for a great visit. Doubt Ill be around Windsor again but if I am.. I know where to have food!
Really nice roast. So we had a takeaway Sunday lunch at £14.50 pp. It was very tasty, with home made Yorkshire puds, crispy roast potatoes and tasty veg. Definitely will have again. Getting towards best in the area!
Great food and welcoming atmosphere, a bit on the pricy side but the Sunday roast was excellent and they accommodate our dietary needs!
Our first visit to The Green Oak was never less than excellent. We enjoyed a superb lunch and attentive service. The lunch menu is quite extensive and should provide something for all tastes. A word of warning for the ultra-sensitive - the tasteful decor contains quite a lot of dead things (small birds, butterflies and animal skulls). If this sort of thing offends you, go elsewhere. In
Lovely restaurant bar tucked away in a country location. Service is excellent and the menu has got some really different dishes on it like goat! We had a deconstructed shepherds pie and Guinea fowl. Prices are reasonable for the high standard you get but watch out for expensive additions like £4 for a bottle of still water!
After three visits, I can honestly say third time wasn’t just lucky but great. My first visit was good, the second not so good, but after leaving some feedback I was really pleased to see it was appreciated and taken on board. So the third visit was an absolute pleasure. After a lovely warm welcome, we were seated at a nice cosy table. A little gripe we had on our last visit was the quality of the service being a little inexperienced, but I can honestly say that the service was excellent this time around. Attentive and friendly but also well informed as their suggestion of a red Chianti to go with our meal was spot on as it had a great body and brought out the flavour of our rich meal. The starter of steak tartare was deliciously soft and the rich yolk, herbs and croutons brought out the flavour of the raw meat beautifully. The main was a 220g red poll flat iron steak aged for 45 days, cooked medium rare you could taste the juicy tenderness and quality of the beef in every bite. The pepper sauce added a little kick to the meat and soft mushroom was perfectly balanced out with large crunchy fries to give every combination put on the fork a deliciously different texture. The perfect way to wrap up a great meal is with a great dessert and the sticky toffee pudding didn’t disappoint. Firstly it was a decent size and with a perfectly balanced scoop of ice cream slowly melting and mixing with the toffee sauce, every bite was a delight. With so many gastro pubs in and around Windsor and Bray you are spoilt for choice. But in terms of charming ambiance, friendly and informed service and amazing food I don’t think you’ll find better value for money. I’ll definitely be back again soon.
Thought I would try The Green Oak for lunch and was very pleasantly surprised.Starting with a ‘genuine’ welcome as I arrived everything was great. I hadn’t booked a table so I was seated outside the main restaurant area. It was very clean with a contemporary feel and has some interesting presentations of ‘mounted’ butterflies. The giant scallops starter was very tasty along side some seeded bread (Sorry I forgot to take a picture as it looked so good I ‘tucked-in’ immediately). The ‘aged’ steak and fries was perfect accompanied by a side of root vegetables. I have to say it was a very impressive steak! The dessert was very nice too.All in all great service, great food, relaxed atmosphere and very well presented venue; I will be going back to The Green Oak very soon!
Visited this new gastropub for Sunday lunch. The pub has been refurbished and transformed in to a brilliant gastropub by two top chefs from The Ivy. We booked a table for six and ordered a number of starters. They were all amazing, worthy of a Michelin star. Well thought out, interesting dishes expertly presented. I highly recommend their version of Steak Tartare, one of the best I have ever had. As it was Sunday we all had the Sunday roast for main. Generous portions with clearly excellent ingredients and a few interesting twists on the standard Sunday lunch. Deserts again were fantastic. What I really noticed was how professional the service was. Sunday lunch in a pub can often be busy and staff can often seem under pressure. Not here, the service was warm and highly efficient at all times. A brilliant transformation. I can only hope the team can stretch there ambition to other pubs and restaurants in the area.
