The George Carvery & Hotel in Ripon

Recently moved into the area and wanted to try out the George again (its been a few years since last here). We were not disappointed. We visited on seniors discount night (Thursdaysand it was already pretty busy by 6pm, creating atmosphere but no so busy that we felt uncomfortable. Very smiley waitress service. Thanks, well be back.

Food excellent they do need another bar problems getting too and from eating area and bar walking back from bar with drinks is impossible unless someone comes the other way and holds the door !

Nice food and pub. Plenty of parking too.

Absolutely cracking place to stay. Brilliant Staff, Excellent food and a warm and inviting atmosphere. My room was clean and well equipped. The bed was very comfortable, so much so I overslept. If you get the chance dont miss this place. Its a Gem.

Delicious roast dinner. Carvery with lots of choice including fish and mince and dumplings, tasty veg. 2 over 65s went on a Thursday night which offers meals for £8.Staff are so friendly, the man who we paid our bill to was great fun

Best carvery/roast Ive had. I love coming here and they have a great dog friendly area to eat in too! Win win!

Absolutely love the place, greeted with smiles from all the staff, Dave and his team repeatedly checked that everything was ok and to a high standard . The food is quality and the place is always clean and tidy. Well worth the money and a tip for efficient young staff👍🏻

We were just heading home after having a lovely few nights in flamborough and decided to take a detour on our way home to Cumbria. We decided to stop off at the George carvery for something to eat. The food and the service was excellent. Not sure of them name of the guy maybe one of the owners. He was very friendly and funny and my one year old son couldn’t stop smiling at him. Think my son was throwing his book on purpose , so he would make him laugh.Couldn’t fault him at all. Really good with children. Food was good. Would definitely come back if we were ever passing although it was a long detour for us. Good place to stop off if you want some decent food. Would highly recommend this place.

WOW !! What appalling service !!! Ordered to sit down and wait ! Family waiting over 40mins to get a drink. I have had far superior service at a burger van. I would not recommend

Turned up after hearing great reviews however they couldnt accommodate us as they said they were full in 40mins time .....its a carvery 2 of us we would have been done and dusted by then

Came on Sunday, the staff and the owners were nothing but welcoming and beyond kind! The roast was probably the nicest roast I have ever tasted, although I wish there was a few more side options! But overall was beautiful food and lovely service! Will definitely return!

Have not been for 4 months food still superb ,3 meats ,pie option all the veg 2 people glass of wine and a diet coke £ 32 any more comments needed

Here on holiday, passed The George and decided to try it, first class staff and food probably one of the best Carveries weve ever had 5* for sure

Fantastic great choice ,we were taking a relative who now lives abroad and wanted a Sunday roast he was not disappointed. Loved it.

Rang to book a table for two at 12:35 to book for 4:30/500. Was told on the phone the table can only be booked for 4:00 so explained we will be arriving between 4:30/5:00, was told fine as long as they have the table back for 6:00.Arrived at 4:48 to be told our table is not available and we had to be there for 4:00 if we wanted a table.Explaining my phone conversation and could not get my head round the fact you had to be there when they say not when you want to book for. Was turned away after driving half an hour to get there. Very bad service will not recommend and will not be calling back!

My wife and I visited this wonderful venue a few weeks ago. It was our second visit, and we were keen to savour their carvery. Once again, we were impressed, both by the service (David is a warm and friendly hostand the quality of food on offer. I have worked and lived in various parts of the UK, as well as holidayed in many UK destinations, and I have to say, this venue does the best carvery I have ever eaten. The meat (I had the beefwas succulent and tender, while the vegetables were fresh and delicious.If you want a very pleasant dining experience, then I would highly recommend this place.

Great carvery, but small plates and you cant go back for more. Difficult to fit everything on the plate. Very popular and busy at weekends.

Great food and a lot of choices in the carvery. There is no reason to be hungry when you leave.

Sorry to say that I have to give this place a bad review due to the unacceptable behaviour of the landlord. My husband and myself were passing and decided to call for a drink but we were too early so we parked in the car park and set off for a little walk until opening time. However we hadnt gone far when we were approached by a man who turned out to be the landlord. He asked us if we had left our car in his car park so we told him that we were planning to return when the pub opened. He was extremely arrogant and abusive, telling us to remove our car immediately and accusing us of leaving the car while we got a bus somewhere. Admittedly we had gone in to the bus shelter when I got a phone call to get away from the traffic noise. However we had no plans to get on a bus, in fact the bus would have taken us back to Ripon from where we had come. However he didnt believe this and continued to be very rude. We have had a meal there before, which was okay, definitely not the best carvery in Yorkshire as advertised, but we had been planning on trying it again. After this distressful episode we definitely wont be setting foot in the place again. I would just add that we are both in our seventies.

The owners are honestly so helpful and generally nice to talk to! When my dad stayed his room was very nice and clean any issues were sorted straight away! When Id go to see my dad Id end up sitting and having a drink and a chat with the owners for hours!! Been back a few years later still lovely staff and the food is really good!!!

I and my family visited the George last Sunday for the first time. The carvery was excellent and good sized portion desserts. Very helpful and friendly staff, couldnt do enough for us. We will definitely be visiting again.

Very good. Really friendly, lots of room, very clean and the carvery is tasty, huge portions nice meat and veg. Very well worth a visit.

Absolutely fantastic hotel to stay at. David was so welcoming, friendly and attentive throughout our whole stay. One of the best hosts I have had the pleasure to stay with.Room was really cosy and spacious and the bed was very comfy.As for the food at the carvery... Wow... absolutely amazing. I was looking forward to the carvery since I made the booking and it did not disappoint. Big slices of meat and really tasty and fresh veggies to go with it.Will definitely be back in the future and I would highly recommend to everyone.Thanks again for a great stayEDIT: I forgot to mention the other staff were very friendly and helpful too, especially the waitress, I think her name was Jess... very polite, professional and nothing was too much trouble.

Amazing food, carvery was delicious with loads of choice and self service which I prefer. Absolutely delightful staff, so welcoming, great service, we were very well looked after. Four stars rather than five as the toilets and seating area could have been nicer, but will definitely be coming back

This is a fantastic place to eat. Beautiful food, excellent service from David. One of our party was Vegan and there was nothing too much trouble, they even prepared vegetables without the honey graze. We would definitely recommend it and we would visit again, if we did not live in Scotland. But if we are in the area we will. Over 55s get reduced rate on Thursdays.

* Edit (Nov- We dont live anywhere nearby but me and my partner have been here a number of times and always rated it as the best carvery. I think the food is amazing and the staff really friendly and accommodating, when we just turn up, when we happen to be in the area. Its what made this carvery so much better than the others. Today, however, we got point blank turned away from the building with a have you got a booking? and were fully booked. Have a good day. While I think its great for them that they are fully booked, for me what made this carvery better than the popular chain carvery (and othershas disappeared. I liked the fact that before they would do their best to fit you in, but today not even a bit of a wait. Its like what made this carvery better than the others has gone and its just like the standard ones. We instead went to a different carvery a number of miles away. Would I visit this carvery again? Probably not as I dont really want to travel there and get turned away and as we dont live nearby booking would be more problematic as it would be harder to guarantee a time. Would I recommend this place to others? Yes, the food is good, but definitely book if you want to visit on a Sunday and dont expect the friendly, accomodating staff who appreciated every person and went out of their way for others.(AugGreat carvery. We visit whenever we are in the area and always thoroughly enjoy our meal! Would recommend.

Here follows a FALSE ADVERTISEMENT.They claim to serve the BEST CARVERY IN YORKSHIRE???? OMG Its not even best in village and there is only 2 pubs... I think most of these reviews have to be family and friends of the owners, or they have been offered discounts to put on a 5 star review!!! They have to of been.... If not they need to get out more often for a proper carvery with some choice of vegetables. B bland blandWe watched a very young waitress attempting to clean a dirty table with a napkin before another family were seated, its all well having young staff but you need a bit of experience to help train and inspect what clothes your staff wear as this was another issue we had as the length of skirts needs addressing... Me and my family will NOT be returning to this place which I think they wont even mind as they will get lots of passing trade but not many regulars returning. Its a shame as ivr looked forward to trying here as I pass it daily. NEVER AGAIN....

Lovely warm greeting from David & Keith, willing to assist in any way they can, the room was fantastic and everywhere was immaculate. We would highly recommend their carvery, lovely fresh veg and no dried out meat. Thank you!

Stopped in for lunch whilst out riding my motorcycle. They found me a table very quickly and had my coffee there by the time I had returned from the bathroom. Had carvery which was very nice and all the staff were polite. Well worth a visit and I will be popping in again if Im over that way on a day out.

The carvery this place serves is one of the best Ive ever had. The staff are lovely, the decor is very nice and it is an absolute bargain with children eating free. Definitely somewhere we shall eat again.

Great food, great atmosphere great service. They really make you feel welcome and look after you. We were there with my daughter and the kids and felt very comfortable. Very careful when clearing tables after people.

Visited Skipton asked Google nearest carvery ended up here. Pleasant staff, service good. Toilets clean. Food better than Toby, but not like your grandmother used to make. Why do people not use seasoning when they cook ? Veggies were good just lacked seasoning too.

One of the best meals around since I got them to thicken up the gravy years ago. !!!. Dave and the team really look after you. I also think its a good idea to only be open 4 days a week. It sort of makes you plan your meals out instead of just being able to go any evening or day. Keep up the good work.

Called in on the roof chance whilst passing. Glad we did. A very tasty and filling carvery with 2 roast meat, a fish dish, chicken dish and what appeared to be a beef cobbler, to choose from. Roast and mashed potatoes, 3 separate types of veg (roast carrot & parsnip, peas & green beans, broccoli). COVID safety taken seriously. Tables well spaced. Staff very friendly and great customer service. Pensioner discount on Thursdays. Spotless toilets.

Excellent. Food is fantastic, the service is out of this world good. Such lovely owner who makes you feel welcome and caters to your every need. Highly recommend coming here !!
