The Stafford London, 16-18 St James's Place, London SW1A 1NJ, Gueckedou
Luxurious hotel dining room bringing inventive, seasonal twists to classic British dishes.
I have eaten breakfast at least once a month for several years here as I work close by - I have never needed a reservation as it is usually quite sleepy and we dont stay more than an hour. I made arrangements to meet there on a Friday morning at 08:30, and as usual the restaurant was completely empty, but an incredibly surly hostess told us that we were not allowed to eat there as they were saving all of the tables for the residents. We advised her that we ate there regularly and would be quick, but she was adamant that she need to keep the tables. If they want to be empty and not serve outsiders, that is their business, but the way it was handled was rude and frankly against any rational restaurant business practice to turn tables. I will not be going back for breakfast, lunch or dinner - doesnt matter how good the food is, bad service always ruins a meal and the experience.
PERFECT! Thank You Giacomo!! You made our night even more special ! Food and drinks recommendations were just spot on! Will be back for the sunday roast and crepe suzette! 😍
Great experience! From the Welcoming, to the end of the service passing by the SommelierNice wine, fantastic puddingTop British cuisine : we were there for itNo disappointment at allI loved it, and recommend itThanks for your service and the spirit of your restaurant 👌👏PS : top choice of Roederer Champagnes (Cristal fresh at the entrance and magnums🍾that I also usually advise at France Terroir as well. "Super on all the line"
Just had dinner there for my birthday. Not only were they open on Sunday night, which is rare for a lot of top restaurants in the area, but the service was attentive and the menu full of things we couldnt get back in the states. Everything from the drinks to the surprise birthday cake slice at the end were five star quality. The Venison Wellington was so tender it melted, yet the crust remained firm and flaky and the sides tasted like their own meals. We got our moneys worth and I hope you do too!
Staff where very nice. Was an overall great experience
Great service, good menu. What more can one say
Firstly i would like to thank all the staff at The Game Bird restaurant at The Stafford Hotel, they are all amazing. We started our fabulous meal with 4 Pyefleet Oysters, amazingly fresh and perfectly prepared. For main, I had The Game Bird (of coursewhich consisted of the Roast Squab Pigeon, Buttered Turnips, Apple Puree, Bacon & Garden Herb Barley Risotto all of which was absolutely beautifully cooked and looked amazingly presented on the plate. My daughter went for the Tomato Consomme which looked and smelled amazing, so pretty on the plate and then the Steak and Ale Steamed Suet Pudding with Triple-Cooked Chips! I went for the Purgatori red wine from Catalonia, again gorgeous and fruity although my palatte is not as educated as most. Dessert i always go for the cheeses as im not really a sweet tooth. Again a lovely array of British Cheeses carefully selected accompanied by seeded crackers. A big thumbs up to all the staff under the direction of the Executive Chef Jozef Rogulski fanatstic job as always and always the finest attention to detail. Fine dining at its highest level!!!
Thought we had booked a table but they couldnt find it, luckily I called to make a change when I found out. Rude staff hung up on me and only answered after 20 phone calls. Wouldnt bother.
Lovely staff, especially Virginia from Palermo, Sicily. She made a very scrumptious crepe suzette! Good value for money! Highly recommended!
I visited The Game Bird for afternoon tea. The hotel and restaurant were beautiful, really nice ambience as you would expect for afternoon tea. Staff friendly and courteous. The tea itself was lovely; the only thing that couldve been better was the sweet items on the menu. Its reasonably priced.
The Game Bird epitomises what great restaurant cooking and hospitality should be for London. A creative menu sitting on traditional British produce and each dish executed very well. Nothing lacks substance or flavour. The waiters are attentive, polite, warm and polished. You can tell their staff care about the job and have pride.
Its second mortgage territory in terms of prices, but the service is impeccable the cocktails delicious (if eye-gougingly expensiveand the food is fantastic. Try the venison Wellington!
I had dinner with a couple of friends and I have to say we were really pleased with the food but the best part has been the staff, they made us feel very welcome and were so professional! Special thanks to Marco, Alfonso and Alberto who looked after us and made our evening in the Gamebird so enjoyable!
Very nice fancy setting, great service and delicious. Corn soup starter is a must. Pricey but not ridiculous
Had a late lunch / early dinner here on Thursday and was absolutely blown away!Every dish was presented beautifully and the taste of each was sublime. Presentation was superb and the choice was vast. Fresh market produce with a beautiful twist. All four of us enjoyed an exceptional meal.Service was out of this world. Very friendly and knowledgeable and absolutely nothing was too much trouble. The sommelier was extremely well educated with the wine list and we were even treated to a tour of the wine cellar afterwards. I can’t wait to come back here. Our whole experience was outstanding. Thank you so much for a beautiful afternoon.
My friends & myself visited The Game Bird restaurant yesterday for lunch, the service, ambiance, food & welcome was lovely..We first had a drink in the American bar, which is cosy& traditional atmosphere, staff were polite, very attentive..This was our 4th visit for a Christmas lunch,we would always recommend this very exclusive hotel...
Yes, its quite pricy for Sunday roast but the place also is the one whenever I crave Sunday roast. Especially when I am away, I just keep thinking about returning to have it!
A hidden gem. The food here is exceptional as is the service. We have visited a few times and will be back again. The wellington to share is very good and based on the number coming out of the kitchen its a popular choice with other diners.
Really disappointing afternoon tea. One tea didnt arrive, champagne never came, pretty meagre cake selection (mainly - nice - scones but rest pretty lacklustre), never offered fresh drinks, had to sit on our coats, etc ... not the level one expects in a good London hotel at all
Visited for Sunday lunch and the service level was way short of expectations for the price level and 5* hotel setting. Our arrival for the reserved table seemed to be a surprise and we were stuck at the back of the restaurant at a table that had to be made up in front of us for the third person, despite the restaurant not appearing that busy. They then messed up the order presenting a vegetarian with roast beef, and took the other roast beef plates away whilst their main was prepared so that we could eat together. However the same roast beef plates from before came back and had gone cold, including the veg/sides and gravy, which was a shoddy effort as they had clearly just been left on the side for ten minutes to go cold. They rectified this (albeit this then left the other diner eating their main alone!and one waiter was apologetic giving us the dessert for free, but the service was otherwise insouciant. One request for a bottle of water was also forgotten, and to cap things off they missed an order in the American Bar afterwards! More training required it seems. The food was pretty nice when it arrived but the service left me thinking twice before recommending and indeed returning.
We had such a great time staying at the StaffordThe staff were so nice really made our stay special. The manager Mark took us on a tour of the 300 year old wine cellar and showed us where during WWII people shelteredThe food at the Game Bird was very good. Ricky and the gang took really good care of us. As did Gigi and a lovely Polish woman in the American Bar. As well people at the reservation desk and the jolly doorman really made us feel like we were most wanted guests. I hated to leave.
Definitely middle of the road. The service was very personable, but a little slow in places (given it wasnt that busyand a lack of consistent wearing of masks was a bit concerning to me personally. The food was middle of the road (for what youre paying), the roast didnt actually look that nice and the potatoes werent good at all. Loads of Mangetout as well, which is an odd one to serve lots of seeing as its so marmite.
I had been wanting to come here for a while and wasnt disappointed. I didnt realise I had booked for their reopening week, it didnt feel like staff getting used to new ways of working. Service was slick but friendly and welcoming. My partner had the grouse, which was a special and not on the menu, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had a steak pudding which was deliciously rich. We had drinks first in the American bar which were well made and very enjoyable. A wonderful evening out.
I was looking forward to the Sunday Roast at the Stafford Hotel; Id found it while looking up alternatives to Simpsons on the Strand. The reviews I read espoused the great menu to look forward to. While the food was sublime, the service was substandard. My compatriot had arrived a little early and was waiting in their delightful reception. We stepped through to the restaurant, looking forward to being seated in such a wonderful setting; and waited. We waited some more. Wed caught the attention of 3 different staff (I assume one was the sommelier but they werent introduced as such), eventually a hotel guest joined us in the queue at which point the staff perked up and seated them; followed by us. Due to Covid the menu was provided via QR code (a link to their website, so double plus points there for not using a white label app), we found our choice (Sunday Roast, with crab and smoked salmon for starters), and this arrived fairly promptly. The salmon itself was delightful, and full of flavour; the side additions not so (especially the crumbled egg yolk). The sumptuous main arrived (the meat, potatoes, and veg), followed by a dashing of gravy, some of which was judiciously poured over my guests leg; there was no notice of this from the staff. Accoutrements were propositioned and we elected for the Horseradish. This was delivered to the far corner of the table, despite clearly being meant for two. The roast itself was divine, meat to rival Kamadhenu; Potatoes that were the crispiest Ive ever seen (seriously, Im fairly sure NASA should be involved in the investigation). Its just such a shame it was overshadowed by an entire waitstaff that could plausibly be on their first day.
Beautiful upmarket restaurant. Fabulous location, decor and ambiance and impeccable service. Food was delicious with plenty of menu options. Very high class.
Beautiful location for breakfast, with a great menu and attentive service
Went there for Sunday lunch. Probably the best Sunday Roast we have had in London so far.The price was reasonable considering the service, atmosphere and location. Exceptional decoration with a Christmas touch in it. Surprisingly the portions were generous as well. Excellent list of wines too.Would definitely recommend for a Sunday afternoon.
An absolute classic, superb food, superlative wine list and world class service. This is a real must for those that love classic British food with a modern twist. You simply won’t go wrong.
Fantastic spot with a very British menu focused around wild game. Food was impeccably done with the wild boar appetizer being the highlight. Definitely recommend for those with a game and fowl palate. If you have dietary restrictions or that doesnt appeal to you, best to find another place.
Came here for a birthday lunch and the team were lovely and attentive. The food was well made and fresh. Didnt expect them to do anything special for my friends bday but they brought a small bday surprise and even sang quietly for us :-Highly recommended!
Lovely setting, average food. Service was attentive, the decor was luxurious but the food, forvthe price was a let down. Starters were good but we chose Cote de beouf to share and it was fatty and not well presented. Sad to say it was bland as were the additional vegetables. I would not recommend going here for the food again.
Really Excellent service, fantastic food, great wines and drinks, and a perfect atmosphere for a relaxed yet smart dinner. I would highly recommended this restaurant.
Just Amazing! Went for our anniversary and we couldnt have found a better place. Presentation, flavor and temps were all done to perfection, staff were very attentive to our needs and gestures. Would highly recommend the Crepes Suzette.
Really incredible service despite the high levels of posh hahaha. They were so kind to us even with a baby in a stroller. We both had a smoked salmon platter to start (sharedand suet pudding with mash and creamed spinach. Everything was well presented and tasted incredible. The facilities are excellent and again cant say enough about the staff making us feel welcome with our infant. We will return for the suet pudding but also want to try the duck Wellington!
A 5 star setting very classic in decor. The Eccles cake was rich and delightful. I had the rosemary cured monkfish it could have a bit more rosemary as it didnt stand out l. For main my friend had the guinea fowl and proclaimed it was the best they had ever had. I enjoyed the lamb which was tasty although I found the dish a bit wintery. Fantastic service throughout.
Superb food in the most pleasing room with great service
I loved the place very posh but the downside for me was I had a roast and the gravy just ruined my experience there. But otherwise it was amazing
The food was great. The presentation was great. The service was great. I really enjoyed the food and the wine was spot on. I do recommend it. Not too expensive for the quality offered.
This place isnt cheap, thats for sure. However, it is super special and worth it for special occasions. The decor is exquisite, the room is comfortable and relaxing, full of period features and chic touches. The service is charming, attentive and seamless. The food is delicious. The smoked salmon trolley is a sight to behold. I only wish Id had room for dessert! I loved it from start to finish.
Coming from New York, my daughter and I were so excited to have Afternoon Tea in one of London’s best restaurants, The Game Bird. When we arrived, we were seated in a very dark area next to the Wine Closet Wall. My daughter and I are vegetarian so we asked for non meat finger sandwiches. The sandwiches were scant and odd. One of the items we didn’t know what was inside. The waiter had told us but we did not understand what it was. There was plenty of food but not at all up to par of what others tea rooms serve. After we left, I started getting weird chills throughout my body. I felt sick. That evening, my daughter and I were vomiting all night. We missed our tour scheduled for the next day, $200.00 US dollars wasted and we missed our reservation for tea time at Sketch. I waited a month to make that reservation and that was lost. Thank you Game Bird for ruining our holiday with food poisoning. We spent an entire day in bed.... I will NEVER go back.
MyFamily loved the high tea at this gorgeous restaurant. The food was delicious (but don’t order food for everyone. We had too much leftoverand the service was impeccable. AGreat British experience.
One.of the great restaurants of London. They dont care for trends only good dishes done with great integrity. They even do chicken Kiev. It will be an expensive night out here and the wine list is not cheap, but do expect a fantastic dining experience.
We tried the tasting menu (£60 eachand the food was fantastic. The pigeon was cooked perfectly, great ham, and the dessert was creative and divine. The scallop ceviche was OK but overall enjoyed the food. Would definitely go again. We had a bottle of red and it was lovely too. But in the end the bill showed £140 more than we ordered. They fixed it but I would expect no mistake as such is made in places like this. 4.5 star not 5.
The service was impeccable. The menu is rather conservative, very traditional British/French fare. The menu was large but felt somewhat limited. Steak tartare was lovely, and steak and ale suet pudding was also excellent. Pistachio souffle was excellent too. Suspect the steaks are excellent. Price is the major issue. Youll struggle with < £75/head for 3 courses without drinks. If you are after a special dining experience, you can get more wow for your buck elsewhere. If price isnt an issue, and your a big fan of great classic meat dishes, this could be for you.
Having read great reviews, we were very much looking forward to dinner here. First of all - food was very, very good, but it was also relatively expensive (bill of £125/head), so it should be.The ambience was very mixed. Our table was barely 4” from the next one so we may as well have shared a table with our neighbouring diners, given that their conversation dominated our dinner. Service was patchy - we had a number of waiters over the evening - with a very long wait at the end for someone to take our bill. I’d probably go back but it’s definitely not appropriate for a client dinner or special occasion.
The staff was great, the food was amazing, I cant say anything bad about the meal I ate except that they gave me so much I felt guilty for not being able to eat it all. They were able to accommodate me on short notice and I had the best Thanksgiving someone could have when theyre on their own away from home.Ill be going back next year and stopping in whenever Im in London.
Absolutely riveting and well worth its high ALC pricetag. The venison tartare is amazingly meaty and moist, and the lamb lobscouse is one of the best lamb dishes Ive ever had.
Great staff, good food and knowledgable sommelier with a good wine selection. Based on the quality, ambience and service it should be far busier but that was lucky for us, am sure it will not last! A hidden gem...
Fantastic food - traditional British fare with a modern twist. Starters included a venison tartare as well as wonderful scallops, although we were tempted by the trolley of cured meats and fish. For mains we had the pigeon served with a hip flask of consommé as well as the super-rich chicken kiev, which came with a smart leather bib to protect you from the potentially violent butter eruption. We ordered from the a la carte, but I noticed they also have a reasonably priced set menu (2 courses £25 or 3 courses £30). Its fine dining but service is friendly and relaxed, so no feeling out of place in the very smart dining room.
Fantastic place!! Ambience is expectedly very exquisite, and the food is sumptuous for sure. The pigeon is wow - I just wanted to chew on it forever. Deer caviar was amazing, ray was lovely, and oh my god that pistachio soufflé - was definitely a Pocahontas moment of me running through a soufflé forest rolling in all the riches all around me. James Durrant is extremely friendly too and was such a pleasure to talk to. Would recommend for sure!!
