The Food Temple - Vegan restaurant in Lisbon, Portugal
The dishes are so small you can finish them in a few bites. I dont understand why so small... Its a shame. The service is good though.
Beautiful venue and unique experience eating outside on the steps but I didnt think the food was amazing. It wasnt bad but it didnt wow me at all.The vegan cheese was bland and there was not much distinction between the varieties other than smoked.Croquettes were tasty and a unique find. Mains were small for the price and didnt stand out.Definitely advise getting a reservation online. Also bill was wrong, service was just fine.
Eating in the steps outside was such a nice novelty idea, Project Mr Bubble was Dj’n in the alley way… the food, the ambience and the service has made this place my new favourite go to Vegan restaurant in the quaint alleys of Alfama Lisbon.
Probably one of the best vegan restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of dining at. It is nestled away down twisty Lisbon lanes, under street lighting at night, the allure was magnified as we approached the steps adjacent to the restaurant where people sat semi recumbent on cushions separated by specially made wooden tables were beautiful plates of food occupied. Such a beautiful setting. We sat inside as it was a little chilly. An open kitchen with a content and peaceful vibe where creativity spread its wings and flew! The food was inspired and totally and utterly delicious! I watched the chef, with focused contentment, as she created the look of our dishes and they were beautiful - a treat for all the senses. I wish I could go back over and over again.
The pipi was the only decent part, the eggplant salad was completely tasteless. Waiter was pushy and repeatedly, subtly suggested we should get something more because what we ordered "was not enough" (btw it def was). Messed up the bill twice. On top of that, sure, eating on a staircase is cool and hipster, but definitely not comfy and does not justify the prices.
As the restaurant was highly recommended on Google and the location looked fancy, I was excited to try the vegan food there. Sadly, I was extremely disappointed! The tofu tarte tasted bitter and wasnt enjoyable at all. I payed 20€ just for myself only.Maybe you add a few more dishes on the menu as well (maybe one or two basics as well).
Oooooooo dont skip this place. Watermelon gaspacho was worth the whole trip. Pretty busy place, get reservations for the stairs. Someone did come to apologize for the service, but the quality of the food was good enough for every single star. All this tells me is that this place is new and you gotta get here before it blows up. Very cool spot, fantastic food.
Really tasty and creative vegan food. The dining atmosphere is also very unique. The staff are very friendly. We loved our starters and the main dishes. Definitely will come back in the future.
Very tasty food, but prices are not in any relation. The cheese platter is not at all like the presentation of the Instagram pictures from the restaurant.(we got far less than half: three mini pieces of three different cheeses and no crackers). "Beetroot pasties on sautéed spinach and tomatoes with truffle mayo" tasted very good. Unfortunately, we got three such small blobs of mayo that you didnt notice them (the next table had 10 times the amount of mayo on the plate). The sautéed spinach was 1 1/2 spinach leaves and the tomatoes were simply two cherry tomatoes that happened to be on the plate. The dessert plate for 12€ was definitely the highlight! All of the food was very tasty but we paid 35 euros (for two starters, olives, two drinks and dessertand didnt get nearly full.
Simply the best vegan dining experience in Lisbon. Had a tremendous evening and can’t wait to come back.
We loved our meal at The Food Temple. Such a relaxed and friendly vibe. Thanks for welcoming us in, on a busy evening. So happy we fit in those delicious desserts after such a varied and filling dinner!
Really excellent food, excellent service and lovely ambience. We enjoyed the live music a lot as well! All vegan and good gf options. Great place for a quiet date :)
Great good, especially the starters. Nice craft beer selection. Very helpful staff. Beautiful setting. What more could you ask for?
Best vegan restaurant Ive been to, so far. Went back a second time to eat there, you do have to make a reservation cause its always full. You are eating on the stairs with cushions and a table made to stand on that stairs. Very nice and fun people working there. Wide menu, and if something is unavailable then they dont just scrap it, they make up a new dish for that day.
Absolutely fantastic vegan food and heartwarming authentic people working and living there!
Was excited to try this place after seeing it’s good reviews and being recommended it in a few online travel videos. The starter we chose was nice- vegan cheese board with bread. The mains were not- the gratin and the tofu pie were bland and not pleasant. Outside is where you want to be, make sure to specifically request outdoor when booking to avoid disappointment (we made this mistake). I would come back and sit outside with some drinks and a couple starters but wouldn’t come back for a proper meal.
Nice vegan spot, hidden behind the busy Martim Moniz square.
Great vegan food, great ambiance, staff is wonderful - whats not to love? What are you still doing here? Go make a reservation!
So, the whole experience wasn’t that great as we expected when reading the other reviews. We ordered the bread, there was no bread anymore. I ordered one of the two crafted beer, only the other one was available. The menu that we got was outdated, so two dishes were not available.About the food, the taste was fine, but from the consistency it is clear that the dishes are prepared before and heated just before serving, this happens in every restaurant, but it’s not that obvious.I have to say that the staff is nice and provides a good service. The location is also nice, and the food is not bad, but it’s not a place I would return.
This is a hidden gemIt is located so perfectly in the old town with the stairs in front of it. The staff was so nice. And THE FOOD!!!! So special and delicious. It shows that they love food!I had the root gratin and it was just awesome. For dessert I had a raw cake which also was very tasty and creamy. So much of the food is also gluten free! So the perfect place for me.
really lovely, the meals are creative and delicious. eating on the steps outside on a warm summer night was really incredible! really great atmosphere, nice staff, reallly couldn’t recommend this place enough
Its a place that is really nice to sit in. Beautiful and nice with a good and relaxed atmosphere. Recommend going there not hungry. Drinking there wine and sitting can be very nice. The food takes a long time to come out, the dishes are really small in relation to the price, and their description on the menu sounds much more interesting than the taste. I would not have come there hungry but glad I sat there because it was nice place.
Ive never written a negative review of a restaurant before. Ive never had an experience that warranted it. Also I can justify the occasional bad experience, because sometimes that happens - we all have our off days - and yes, a few of the staff here definitely seemed to be having one of those days when I visited, but thats not what the negative review is for.I sat on their steps outside that theyve converted into a patio and it was very pleasant until the smokers arrived. Okay, I get it; Portugal has very laxed/no laws about smoking, but generally my experience is that most people are polite about not blowing smoke in other peoples faces especially while theyre eating. Not so much at The Food Temple. I would ordinarily say that the smoker is the problem and theres not a whole lot the restaurant can do about it, but heres what happened. The first of the smokers to arrive very politely went to bottom of the stairs and across the alley to smoke, but then was told by one of the staff that it was okay to just smoke in the dining area and gave her an ashtray. I was STUNNED. Why would a staff member tell someone to smoke in the dining area when theyd made an effort not to? Because apparently the staff member also wanted to smoke in the dining area.It got worse from there. There was a cigarette dangling within a foot of my face and the food for the entire meal (also in the face of a nearby toddler dining with their familyand in the end the only flavour left lingering in my mouth was cigarette smoke. Super disappointing and unpleasant experience.
Great vegan food and top service in the cutest setting - sitting on the stairs outside. We ordered most of the menu and everything was delicious. The dessert tasting platter was awesome.
The place Is nice, they just have 2 main dishes, the service Is long cause there Is a lot of people even If you have a reservation, go with Time.I took a main dish was very nice "gratin" then I wanted to take dessert but Is was so long that I Ask for the bill, then They told me they didnt take internacional credit cards, I was counting the coins to pay 15€ cause I didnt have cash with me. Otherwise I could feel that the Energy of the staff Is very nice..
This is such a wonderful restaurant! Beautiful setting, you can sit outside on some steps and eat off a small wooden table. And the food is incredible, delicate and unusual dishes, almost fine dining but not at all pretentious and reasonably priced. Maybe the best vegan food I’ve had in lisbon. Worth making a reservation first.
The food here was a absolutely delicious. My boyfriend and I had been talking that many vegan places serve food that all kind of tastes the same after a while but this place is an exception for sure.I’ve eaten all these ingredients (tempeh, root veggies, cassava, tofu,…before but the way they tasted in these dishes was completely new to me. The portions are a bit small but somehow still filling, so don’t have to put you off !The staff is extremely friendly and service was well-paced.We sat outside on some stairs which was also a nice addition to the experience.Overall: 10/10Ps. reservation is highly recommended and so easy to do
One of my favorite dining experiences in a long while. The chocolate dessert was one of the best things Ive ever tasted, and the tempeh as well as the tofu pie were phenomenal. Lovely, friendly staff, and unique dining experience sitting on the steps outside the restaurant. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Best place to relax and feel free! * in the middle of historical part of city you can hide on the stairs of Fado district 🌿nice vegan & vegetarian options 🌿& of course very well coming personal. I love to visit this place just to feel it and of course to try some new dishes *
Probably the best vegan food I ever had. Brilliant dishes. Staff was super friendly and authentic, the location is very neat and a bit hidden in between small alleys. Would definitely recommend!
Nice restaurant. We made an online reservation. If its nice and warm, cou can sit outside as well. The food was very good and we enjoyed ourselves very much.We both tried the tofu pie and were very pleased.I can definitely recommend it.
This is one of my best dining experiences ever. I showed up without a reservation and they fit me in. The location is beautiful. You can eat outside on the steps or inside in a lovely but very small space. The staff is very friendly. The food is delicious. Its not meant to be faux meat. Its just really wonderful vegetarian dishes. I would eat here again.
Amazing vegan food, one of the best I have ever tried. Really kind and attentive service
Small menu with interesting options. We tried almost everything on the menu. All of the dishes were nice and creative, but a lot of them seemed to miss something. Still, I love when a restaurant serves dishes I would have never came up with myself.
I cannot begin to recommend The Food Temple enough! This restaurant is tucked away quietly between residential buildings. You can choose to be seated outside on the steps. The food will be delivered Tapas style in a carefully crafted order. For the overall price of the restaurant combined with the experience, this is a must.
Way too experimental food; its a shame that the main dishes tasted totally bland despite the fact that so much effort and thought was being put into them. Though, the biggest downside is disorganisation in the service. We waited more than one hour for our meal. And please keep in mind that although they take reservations (google mapsbeginning from 18:30, their kitchen is not open until 19:00. They may as well consider not taking reservations until that time to avoid prolonged waiting time for their customers. Regardless of these cons, they made some discount for the waiting time trouble, which I appreciate.
Actually the atmosphere is really nice to have a dinner. But unfortunately we had some problems:- Although they accepted our reservation request at 18.30, we were informed that the kitchen would be opened at 19.00. If I need to wait for the kitchen, then theres no point to have a reservation.- We waited about 1,5 hours for our main dishes to be prepared and served. (We needed to ask about this delay twice)- Meanwhile some other tables received their meals much earlier than us, although they ordered much later. It looked like a serious planning/coordination issue.- Unfortunately the food didnt taste good. It looked too experimental, simply but tasty food could be much better.+ While paying, we were offered some discount to make the problem about delay up. That was the only positive thing.
Officially my favorite português vegan restaurant in Lisbon. I happily ate my feelings. Also, the waitress is very kind.
Cute place, but food-wise it needs some improvement. We got a tofu pie with some steamed veg, but it was too tough to bite. The other dish was rice with coconut and tomato sauce, strange combination. Good wine on the positive note
A delightful little vegan restaurant with a fantastic array of beautifully presented and creatively mixed ingredients; this place is a must for any plant based foodie who appreciates works of art on plates! The staff are friendly, helpful and appreciative of feedback. Highly recommended!
I have been to a lot of restaurants in Lisbon. Fantastic ones, because I live here. But since there are so many, I dont see the point of visiting them again. I rather try a new one. But this place was one I visited twice, and never got disappointed so far. Great experience
Came here for dinner and the food was fantastic! Tried 5-6 dishes and all of them were very tasty. The outdoor area is unique. Tables are placed across stairs outside of this spot. Enjoying dinner and a drink in this spot provided one of my best experiences in Lisbon!
Best place I have been in Lisbon! If the weather allows you can sit outside on the stairs and it’s absolutely magical and unique. The food is high quality, presentation is beautiful and seriously so delicious. Before going here i thought its more a home style restaurant but the food we got was high end perfection. We also had a bottle of wine which was also nice. The menu is always changing which is nice. The service is nice and attentive. The prices are good for a vegan place in Lisbon.I would love to live in Lisbon to be able eat at this place more often:)Don’t forgot to reserve! It’s a way for them to insure the best quality;)
“Nice ambient” “Pricey” “Small portions”We were lucky getting a table on the inside without reservations since this is such a popular vegan restaurant. However, the ventilation wasn’t that great and the air was stuffy and oily with the open kitchen and small indoor space. After waiting for almost an hour for all our food to be served, me and my friend both felt a bit uncomfortable. The food was very experimental and there were some nice smokey flavors which we absolutely enjoyed. But the portions are really quite small. So maybe the restaurant could consider serving bread? That could solve the problem of small portions and the long waiting time.
Probably the best restaurant I’ve been to in Lisbon. And it’s because the food is really good and the place is super authentic. Being inside a neighborhood that you can literally hear kids running around and people talk from the buildings. You can sit on the stairs and enjoy the weather or inside. The place us small but feels just right, the menu changes daily and has A soup, 3 tapas dishes and one main. Take all of them - this is also what is recommended. For vegan food in lisbon it can’t get better than this. The prices are also pretty reasonable. The only thing I would worry about is getting there, the metro station is in a pretty sketchy neighborhood- I would recommend getting there early.
A bit of an underwhelming experience. I was excited after reading the reviews, but the food was just ok for me. I tried a couple small plates, but expected amazing flavors or something special because of the prices, but I didn’t think it was worth it. Interesting seating outside on the steps. The staff wasn’t the most welcoming either. Overall, an ok experience, but was a bit disappointing with all the other great choices in Lisbon.
Great vegan food in a hippie restaurant! The restaurant itself was very small, so reservation is recommended. The tables are also small, but it adds up to the atmosphere. Its not a restaurant where you can sit for hours, as the service is very fast! They have a daily changing menu, and their dishes are not expensive at all! Quality of the food is very good, everything was delicious (leave some room for dessert!!!!)
Must go in Lisbon, whether you are vegan or not. My girlfriend is vegan so we sometimes visit vegan places. Often I as a not vegan am disappointed, however, this time it was the best meal I had on our 4 day trip, including non-vegan meals.Very affordable, very delicious, very creative, amazingly friendly staff, great beers. The atmosphere is very cozy and romantic. It is a small room where you are sitting in the kitchen. Everyone speaks English very well.If you want to eat here, make a reservation, or show up at 19:30, because this place is very popular with locals.
This restaurant has to be one of the best veggie restaurants weve been too! They have a set menu each day of soup, three tapas, main dish and dessert. It took some finding and is hidden down a little side street. You have a choice of sitting inside or out but if you are sitting outside you will be sitting on steps but they have cushions and a tables set up on the steps which is looks great. The staff are really great and they have English menus. I admit Im a meat eater but what I really loved was the unexpected :)
A wonderful place with a wonderful atmosphere! Sitting, or rather lounging, on the stairs was very enjoyable and there happened to be a neighborhood fado concert which created a fabulous live soundtrack to our experience! the menu is small and fixed: that day they had a vegan interpretation of Portuguese bread soup which was amazing! I am a decade long vegan and I will attest that their food was delicious and interesting ( often, that is a challenge with vegetarian and vegan cooking). Some comments have mentioned pricing as an issue. I struggle to understand! For my husband and I, paying 45 euro for a 3 course meal, and wine, and desert is more than reasonable!!! Thanks you for the experience Food Temple 😊🙏
