The Flying Squid - Fish & chips shop in Dunedin, New Zealand
Best whiteing and chips!
Good fish n chips, not bad burgers either
Great cod. Nice chips
Worst fish and chips ever since change of ownershipStore bought fish, chips and everything elseCan buy what they have for cheaper and make it at home and be 10 times better
Bruh like the best chips and burgers in town
Blue Cod and chips, my first ever meal in New Zealand and cooked to perfection.
The worst fish and chips that I have ever had. The chips were floury and the fish which isnt fresh by the way, its all frozen. The fish was just gross, had an awful taste to it. Service was friendly enough so that was a plus.
Me and a mate felt very sick after eating here. Probably mild food poisoning. Dont recommend. Over priced as well
Good fish, good serving size and absolutely delicious chips... highly recommend
Love it since my student days! Nice chips, not soaked in oil and was a nice feed with friends :)
This place is the best. best staff and owners. best food. would recommend 10/10.
Honestly the fried blue cod wasnt that great, especially for $9.50. The batter was so thick and low key tasted undercooked ;; the battered hoki was ok
The chips are very good and a scoop is a very generous amount, though a little too salty. Friendly service.
Fast and friendly service. Fish and chip are awesome. Not a fan of the seafood stick and oysters from here, too much batter.
Great fish (Blue Codand chips. Lives up to the reputation Ive heard from others.
Just had Blue cod and chips and was really looking forward to it. Fish was not fresh and had a doughy batter that was undercooked. Very disappointed with this expensive throwaway. Chips where great.
Always love Squiddies!!! The best hot chips in Dunedin!! (Ask for extra salt).
Very nice chips, descent price, not so descent fish.
Chips are yum batter a bit thick and gluggy , they were just ok, have been twice now.
The owner was very friendly and fish n chips were not greasy at all!! It was so good!
They state gf items on the board but they do not have gf items apart from a sausage which they will cook with gluten items and there chips are not gf. Good food, very yummy the rest of the family enjoyed it. They need to not advertise gf items they no longer have.
One of the best takeaways in Dunedin! Their blue cod and shoestring chips is simply to die for! The batter on the fish is crisp and light, the fish tastes amazing and they add that finishing touch by topping it off with a little lemon pepper. The chips are cooked perfectly and crisp but still nice and fluffy inside. They have a decent menu with gluten free and dairy free options available as well as burgers. Behind the counter is a selection of chilled drinks as well as a few lollies and treats if you cant quite wait for your meal to be cooked.
Fish came from the super market, as did the fries. The battered sausages had horrid thick, under cooked batter. Pretty disappointing. Perhaps they were having a bad day, but that doesnt excuse super market fish and chips. Could have bought the same thing from pak n save for 1/3 the price.
When you ask for no sauce on a hotdog you expect no sauce, also dont expect for the jam donuts to be burnt or the chips to be stone cold. Ended up throwing the majority of the meal in the bin as it tasted like I was eating out of the garbage can. Wont be returning.
Great food! Crunchy chips and fish and squid rings are excellent! Had 3 meals and 3 times satisfied. Thank you 😊
Specifically asked for no pineapple or onion on my burger..... What did I get.... Pineapple. At least it was not onion as well. Generally good value and nice enough burgers.... Just annoyed at poor service. Called up to tell them about their mistake and they said "oh sorry sorry mix up" them hung up on me. Just bad service and poor effort. Probably wont go back.
Great place to buy lots of takeaways from. The service is good, and because it is often packed, you may wait ~10 mins for your order. Dont have high expectations here, afterall it is a takeaway shop (nothing fancy); however, for a takeaway shop it is clean, fast and cheap - 3 great reasons people go for a feed. They also have lunch deals for some of their burgers. This shop has fed me through exams countless times.
Have been a regular customer for some years now and sadly the standard is not consistent. Some days the blue cod and chip are yummy and on other days the blue cod is mostly oily batter and the chips are lukewarm! It is a bloody disappointment when you get home to eat. Bloody disappointing of late.
Really awesome place for chips. They offer shoestring and crinkle in a variety of sizes and are always quick. While theyre a fish and chips store, they offer a lot more than just those two items.
They were really busy but still managed to get food out fairly quickly and cooked well. Chips ok, vege wontons are a tasty little bundle, burger was good but the battered hoki was chewy. So still having problems finding a good proper piece of battered fish, in Dunedin
I got ripped into by a fish and chip shop the other day asking for shoe string chips and all sauces. This is been the only place I know that sells shoes stings since I moved to the South Island
Definitely one of the best fish and chip shops in Dunedin. I can highly recommend the blue cod, and the chips are excellent. The students rate this place and they should know. A+++
Crinkle cut chips was nice but there burgers were average. I can see why its popular with the students. And its reasonably priced.
Really nice chips here-soft on the inside and crispy on the outside, not too greasy and well priced. Probably could do with some extra seasoning though, then that would 100% boost it up to a 5 star.
Chips were ok. But everything else was processed food made somewhere else. Only students staggering home at 3am would enjoy the fare!!
Really good fish and chips. Not too greasy and the snapper was delicious. Gets pretty busy during student semesters, not much room to dine but fish and chips are best eaten outdoors anyway.
this would have to be the best meal of fish and chips ever. real fish beautifully cooked and brilliant chips that were not dripping with fat. well donewill be back
The best, THE BEST! Chips in town. Crinkle cut, fatties, shoestring, a Mix even! My fave is their garlic salt seasoning. OMG! Addictive, if youre a chip fiend like me. They have been consistent since I was a little kid and my eyes still light up when I see, hear of, go to, The Flying Squid. In my opinion this place is iconic.
Hands down best shoestring chips in Dunedin and only a short walk from the library for efficient study breaks and close to the stadium too for post rugby munches. highly recommend!!
More expensive than the other fish and chip shops around Dunedin. Best deal at this place are the $3.80 lunchtime burgers, but still lacking compared to burgers at other fish and chip shops with similar prices without any special added.
Fish and chips made to order and sufficiently drained so you avoid the need to die afterwards. Popular with students, so avoid around peek times.
The shoe string chips are the bestGreat lunch time burgersThe cheap fish is average size but taste great
Just very average fish and chips shop. Do not order mussels, its disappointing. No lemon, no homemade aioli, but the serving size is quite big.
i feel the need to revise my previous rating comments. i had to go elsewhere for blue cod whilst the flying squid was closed for christmas holidays. i went to a place that also has good reviews for but found it expensive and got fish that didnt taste like cod. Im 99.9 % certain it wasnt cod.it is hard to get good blue cod at a reasonable price so if you find a place that delivers - stick to them. ive never been disappointed by the blue cod from The Flying Squid.
Great place and never a dull moment - all chips are cooked fresh to order and always piping hot! Awesome work , please don’t go out of business soon
Best kumara fries I tried in New Zealand! Awesome - a must take if you are here. Veggie burger and regular fries on the other hand were nothing special. Very friendly and nice team working on meals.
The curly fries there are just amazing, and the fish tastes like frozen fish, but its still really good. Plus, you can get the university wifi while waiting. Highly recommend.
Probably the best fish n chips shop in the North Dunedin, it is very close to the Central Library, and the food is very good for its value - a $2.80 bag of shoestring fries is more then what a single person can eat!!
Okay fish and chip shop, good location, prices keep getting increase while quality has been going down the past few years, have screwed up my order a few times so I dont frequent it. However its okay and is always pretty busy.
Cheap prices and good amount of food always! For less than 8 dollars, I could eat a whole fish burger and medium sized skinny fries! Always my fav 😉
