The Flying Moa - Bar in Auckland, New Zealand
Been here a few times, 5 star across the board, food, service, atmosphere.Highly recommend
Soooooo just been told the food will take as long as it will take.... when questioned further as to how long that would equate to we were told one order of cauliflower popcorn would take 45 mins... interesting the place is half empty and the quiz function that should have been prepared for takes precedence over one measly order of cauliflower#preciouschefsPost script: offered more drinks ... what happened to responsible alcohol sales - food and alcohol vs drink up we cant feed you!!!
Favourite place for an afterwork drink. Staff are friendly and food is yummy!
This place has lost a lot of love. I took friends from out of town to have some lunch and drinks. The food was pathetic, I could of got more meat on a $5 pizza from dominos. Staff member serving drinks had one arm in a cast whilst the other older staff member was more interested having a drink with friends at a table. The chicken was the only good thing here. Friends said theyd never come back.
Fish and chips can feed 2 people so order 1 to start off with, customer top knotch
Great coffee and service however the squid/calamari was rubbery which was shame as everything else tasty thankyou
Initially thought it was a lovely place and good atmosphere, I wish I could say the same about the service. Waitresses were so rude and then food took over 2 hours to get to us with everything coming at different times. When they ran out of food after hours of waiting! Would definitely not recommend.
Quality of food was great ,service fast , friendly staff , wouldnt hesitate to go back for dinner again
Nice, open and spacious inside with a lovely outdoor seating area. Staff are relaxed and friendly and were prompt to clear our table when we visited. Food came out promptly, was very nice and my special requests were well catered for. Great that they have a pool table too, the perfect mix of bar & eatery.
Amazing service and food. I was there last Thursday for drag queen bingo and it was amazing
We really enjoyed our lunch here cool vibe and the staff were great, took a little while for our drinks to come but when they did we enjoyed them.
The first time I went there, I would rate it 4 out of 5 unfortunately this second visit was the polar opposite. A rude staff member destroyed what could have been a delightful visit. Too bad as I could have seen myself as a regular.
Imminently skippable. Needs new management.Went for a quick Sunday lunch at 12:15p. 3 kids under 5. Heaps of tables available. Was told “no tables” at 12:15 due to “2pm reservations” (1h45 later). I assured we’d leave in an hour, but staff had no interest — they couldn’t be bothered to turn any tables. They sat us at the bar with high chairs. The empty tables sat empty the whole time.Sure, it’s a pub. But Joylab places are generally passable. Food was meh, but the management was downright rubbish.*Update: management has now commented that I should have made a booking — for their unoccupied tables and washed-up pub fare. Validates my review — steer clear*
6 of us went to dinner the food was amazing and Grace our server was terrific definitely recommend
Nice atmosphere, great selection of food at reasonable prices and generous portion sizes. Nice selection of desserts and good drinks menu
Staffing really needs to be assessed for big televised sporting events. The wait for food and drinks was crazy long. 2hr wait for the platters to come out. Ordered drinks around 6:10pm and got them around 7pm. Was another 1hr for the next round to happen.. having to chase staff for an update on food or drinks. The Ribs are definitely some of the best.
Has some good vegan options (loved the dumplingsand staff is super friendly and patient to explain the ingredients.Great place to watch games!
Great food, service and a lovely long lunch with a very nice wine by Left Field
I used Efpost to settle the bill & was charged an extra $3.26 for the "convenience" to use Paywave. The Manager on Duty did not mention this to us & thier was no signage to warn us patrons!
Absolutely fantastic! Food was great, friendly and fast service. Very reasonable price.
Response to Manager feedback for how our group was badly treated.Since you don’t allow customers to respond. I will just add my experience yet again to advise the public of how rude your staff is including the manager behind the keyboard.1. Please explain how your staff gave plenty of notice to our group when clearly there are others still around and our group can see that? Place yourself in the customers shoes. We were only told that you were closing a few minutes before which we were clear of and for your information we were not “asked” nor nicely to leave. The body language and scene we witnessed and stereotyping prior to being forced to leave is why I will be taking this complaint further.2. If race was not the issue then why was the other table who were also there and of European descent not approached the same way we were by Jordan who is meant to be the manager. We were very much aware of the closing time and were happy to comply yet you failed to allow us enough time to finish our alcohol that you served us and called as “last drinks” before closing as paying customers. we knowingly were just weary of the other table and were about to finish up. If you had a specific closing time then maybe you need to let your staff know to not serve anymore alcohol. The fact is this whole situation could have been avoided if your Manager Jordan owned up to his rude approach and managed the situation appropriately.3. Noone even your venue tolerates physical/ verbal / homophobic abuse yet you failed to mention or apologise because it was your staff who displayed the above towards our group. Our group only retaliated because of the actions your staff showed towards us.Apart from the fact that we will not be back I will not accept your “Sorry you feel that way” I am appalled of such a response let alone from a manager. Noted we are not the only group who have been treated this way and to have this experience according to reviews so I will happily share the truth :)
UPDATE!Ha! Can’t reply back so I’ll say it here! Your response is as weak as your service. The old copy and paste trick huh. Did you forget about the other group who were also there til close but decided to pick on us then threatened to call the cops and accused us of having gear (Drugsjust to get us out though you served last round 30min before you decided to close and expected us to chug a tower down? What a joke.Absolutely pathetic! You don’t deserve any stars and should be fired!Food was average at best, staff were even worse! Thanks for the unpleasant experience Jordan Gaylord.
Food is decent but a bit pricey. Good atmosphere though, and friendly staff
10 June 2022. If I could give this place no stars I would. For the amount of money we spent here I hope to warn other group bookings that if your wanting to enjoy an evening of leisure and a catch up with your family even on special occasions. The flying Moa should be avoided at all costs. We booked here for a birthday and even though it was average food, towards the end of the evening two staff members in particular were very rude.We were all enjoying time with family aware that the place was about to close. They allowed us to order our last drinks and the rush to get us out of there after ordering was surely displayed with their discriminating actions.Jordan Edwards- “Manager” on site spoke so rudely to our table, the unnecessary unconscious bias towards our group was outright demeaning and need to learn what hospitality is about. The other staff member “Emily” who had an attitude of someone who obviously didn’t like her job.Won’t be returning here what a complete waste of money all because of two staff members who don’t know how to make a first impression on their customers.I mean for goodness sake they didn’t even let us eat our birthday cake because the staff member was more concerned about closing in 5 minutes. 🤦🏽♀️ Shocking Flying Moa.
Went there for lunch. I had the Calamari which was cooked to perfection. Chips and salad also came with the main. The service was excellent and I like the fact she came back to see how things were going. The background music was not loud so you could hear what people were saying. Definitely 5 stars
Food is amazing. Pork belly and prawn roll is so tasty, and pan fried fish(fresh fishand chips very nice. Staff are very friendly and welcoming. Good vibe.
Service was OK but the food was disappointing. Had the steak for lunch and it wasnt great. Expected a better standard for the price ($42). The meat was tough and quality sub standard. The salad was basic as with just tomatoes and lettuce, but the leaves were old and brown on the edges. And the hand-cut chips were recooked. Overall the food was disappointing..OK if youre just looking for a drink and catch up, but Id avoid earing there.
Food was incredible! So tasty and full of flavour. Best pub meal ever. Will totally be back!
Went on Sunday for a lunch. Service is average - had to sort out my own menu, was not offered water - probably still in red light mode. We had the burgers - string fries were average but the burger was ok.
Wanted dinner and a beer. Was not granted a menu until took a table allocated to me by staff. Then I couldnt get a beer as I was away from the bar on my allocated table that I didnt want to sit at. I questioned this system and was told I have attitude. I have dined at thousands of pubs ND never had this difficulty. So I left as bad service with being treated like a child will not woek
Staff are lovely. But food not so great. Our starter dumplings were cold in the middle. I couldn’t eat my pasta because it was flavourless unfortunately. My partner had pork belly and said it was “ok”. The general overview of the experience was “ok” we would say. Drinks were good. I’d probably come back for drinks but not food.
The very best around! If you haven’t been, make sure you do.Great beers, food and staff!Shows sports on a big screen and has awesome specials most nights.Make sure you try the ribs, you won’t find anywhere better!
Fab place! Went to the Flying Moa and ordered the fish tacos and pork bites as well as a few drinks. The food was absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced. Staff were super friendly and accommodating. If you’re in Mount Wellington and looking for a nice spot be sure to check it out, highly recommend!
Unfortunately, they didnt beat my expectations. The food was too oily and tasteless and their chips are too thin and broken. The only good thing I enjoyed was the haze beer. That was really good. The environment is also nice!
amazing food as always!! staff are always so sweet and food delivery is almost always reasonably quick!
Great food, amazing cocktails and friendly serviceCons... The flies!! Man we were trying to keep flies off our meal like we were eating in a bush! Definately needs some sort of fly deterent here. The only other negative would be out starter came out still frozen in the middle but they replaced and did not charge us so honest mistake.
Nice place, nice atmosphere reasonable priced!! Ive been a few times and the food and drinks are always great. Recently i ordered the chicken schnitzel with smashed potatoes and green beans and it was delicious. My friends ordered the Csesar Salad with chicken and that too was great. The place was packed and service time was reasonable. Highly recommended.
I visited The Flying Moa on a Saturday afternoon for lunch with friends. I did not realise there was a boxing match being shown there which meant it was bustling! We ordered lunch, I ordered a lovely scotch filled steak. Which tasted amazing and to my surprise did not take long for them to take our order and have the food on our table. Due to the large amounts of people there I thought I was going to be slow. So I do recommend eating there lovely pub food, great price and great atmosphere just for a nice chilled drink. Would highly recommend. Look forward to seeing it open again
Hi all. My family and I visited the Flying Moa pub several weeks ago. I had a family member up from the south island and she actually picked this place out, just from the online menu, and relative proximity. When we arrived we were greeted by two great staff members, asked straight away for our drinks order. They arrived promptly, and food orders were taken. The food was exceptional and more than fair in terms of size, more importantly the quality was fantastic. I would recommend this place easily for a meal and a cold one. I would also like to give a shout out to the staff, as I have visited several times since and they are top drawer people. 😇
We had the lamb shank with mash as well as the chicken schnitzel burger (with lettuce wrap instead of the bunand fries.I also had a caramilk hard shake which didnt seem particularly alcoholic.Food was excellent, tender and well presented. Probably my biggest criticism was that the meal was a bit on the expensive side.In summary, loved the food as well as the service and surroundings. However a good night out could have been a great night out if they reigned in the price a bit.
Came here for a work function. Food was really good, and the staff were helpful and friendly. Update: one year later, and even better!
Quite disappointed with the portion size and service. Went with a group of mates after a game of sport and we were expecting a good portion for a pub feed, but we got a little snack. Will not be returning for sure.
Came in around 1100 but the kitchen didnt open until 1130. We were able to look through the menu and order both food and drinks when we were ready. As expected, it wasnt busy so we were able to order when we were ready. We were informed that the meals wouldnt be prepared until the kitchen was ready.I was really disappointed with the hot white chocolate and coconut drink. The idea was interesting with a piece of chocolate on a stick which you can pour hot milk into. The white chocolate was quite bland and the coconut was desiccated so you didnt get much coconut flavour and the coconut bits werent very nice to drink. The buffalo cauliflower was alright, nice crispiness but I just found the hot sauce to be on the sour side. The zoodle salad was very nice. Quite good flavours and nice bits of kumara and nuts to give more flavours and textures.Quite a nice and large pub in the area. Food is quite nice and the service was also quite good.
friendly staff, smilling all the time. we ordered full ribs and beef cheek for lunch, both take times, the staff was taking care of our worries.Speaking of food, beef cheek and mash tastes great, so tender and juicy. 8 out of 10while the ribs is a bit over the time. its dried outside, but still tender inside, I would give 5 out of 10.
Now, I dont reallyyy "love it", but theres nothing that left me feeling like I didnt get what I expected to. Its a basic beer bar, taps wont really change that much to anything on micro craft level, and prices for food and drinks can get quite high. The place is clean though and theyve got a pool table plus Ive heard they have trivia nights. Great for groups, so call ahead if you want to reserve a table for that. Quite expansive inside. But the open face steak burger ... Nah, a regular burger would def have been better.
The burgers were great, and we loved our meals. Great place to see our friends and good selection of beers and drinks. Well definitely be back again thanks
Great food. Great atmosphere. Has a smokers area for the nicotine gang. A little pricey on the menu but worth it cos it was good quality and decent size portioning. Live band playing while you wine and dine.
Awesome venue. We had the steak on the volcanic stone and it was one of the best eating experiences Ive had in a while. The bar staff were very friendly and extremely helpful even on a busy night.Really looking forward to going back, maybe for some chicken wings.Seriously though.. Try the steak!!
The food, drink and service is all good and the pool table is free on a Monday; otherwise it is $3 which is a bit steep. Nicely decorated inside and plenty of outside area for smokers.
Went here on a Monday night and had the soft fish tacos and sliders. The taco was terrible and tasted very floury. We couldn’t finish the second one. The sliders were fairly average-pork belly, fish and beef.We didn’t realise until after we ordered that they do food deals. Monday’s are all you can eat ribs. If we had seen this earlier we would have ordered that - everyone else did 😀We would probably return for a drink but not for food. Staff are very friendly here
