The Fern Cafe in Taupo

With a fantastic looking menu, the family and I were excited to have lunch here on Saturday. The excitement slowly faded as we had potentially one of the worst lunches ever. The service and food were just awful. Mum ordered the nachos, cheese was flavourless and the mince was just fried with an onion and some sweet chili sauce, meaning it had no flavour also. I had the wedges which also came with the flavourless cheese and an entire tub of sour cream on the side. Husband found the steak sandwich to be chewey. The waitress we had had no idea what each of the meals were, and didnt bother to find out instead saying she didnt know. The only shining light was the sausage roll and coffee was enjoyed by Dad, shame it look far longer for it to come out that everyone elses meals. Will not be returning, and will instead stick to Double Shot Cafe on Horomātangi Street instead.

Great service ☺️Big breakfast with steak was very nice.My partner loved hashbrown BENE with salmon.My mate loved it salmon and avocado stack.It is Very cozy place and very nice sitting outside.Service with smile 😊 hard to see now days.Highly recommended This cafe.

Friendly staff, was awesome food with reasonable price fully enjoyed.

Unfortunately the friendly cashier could not compensate for the poor quality and portion size of the food. Stale cabinet food, $38+ for two small bowls of "loaded" fries which were undercooked and definitely NOT loaded, etc etc. Appalling.

Nice coffee, nice food and good service. When there was a miscommunication with the order the owner quickly rectified the issue and even complimented us the meal brought out incorrectly.

Seafood chowder 😋It is worth trying. Best in town.

Hash eggs Benedict was very delicious. Wonderful store made hash browns were very flavourful and eggs perfectly cooked. Sauce lovely too. Service always good with lots of smiles and nice coffee.

I enjoyed a lovely breakfast here when I was away for work. The gentleman that served me was upbeat and full of lovely pleasant chat while serving me at the counter. He served my meal and drink in a timely manner when I was seated outside. I would absolutely come back here! Delicious pancakes, a tasty iced chocolate, and I just felt so fuzzy from the experience. Looking forward to coming back here with my partner.

Our usual haunt in Taupo was closed and we came across The Fern.Wow! Greeted and made to feel welcome from the moment we entered.We came back almost everyday for either late lunch or brunch.Food portions are generous and tasty. Try it out.Located off street so look toward back right corner of Suncourt to find.

We visited this establishment for lunch a couple of days ago. We were served desserts very promptly but then waited for around 1 hour for our main courses to arrive. My wife`s main was acceptable but my main was most definately not... the chicken burger was all `congealed`, with both parts of the bun appearing to be very `soggy` indeed. A very disappointing luncheon experience... we never worked out why we were served desserts before mains ! :-(

Just a fabulous place. Staff are top notch. Service is impeccable. It’s a cafe/restaurant. Food is superb. Husband had the beef burger and is was massive. Pancakes with bacon and banana with maple syrup was declious. Open chicken sandwich was perfect as was the hawaiian pizza. Great value for money and i must the staff were amazing and friendly which is great to see in these times. We will definitely be back.

I came here with my family on Mothers Day for brunch. We ordered 3 hot drinks, one of which was a fluffy for a 2 year old. They were all delivered at 5 minute intervals, and the fluffy turned out to be just very hot chocolate milk (quite difficult for a toddler to deal with). The food took 30+ minutes, and again all came at different times.The key issue, though, was that after ordering the Smoothie Bowl menu option, as I cannot tolerate dairy (and had said such when ordering my plant-milk coffeeand it was not listed in the ingredients, I was served a lukewarm, watery milkshake with cornflakes crushed on top.It was obviously inedible for me and when I expressed this to the staff, the response was "oh, we are changing the menu soon anyway."I still had to pay for this meal that would have caused me pain had I unknowingly consumed it, and was offered only a replacement "but we dont know how long it will take".Absolutely will not be risking my own or the health of my family by eating here again.

Very friendly service, nice food and coffee. Great location. On holiday from Australia would recommend to others to visit this cafe, excellent.

I have lunch and Coffees at the Fern 2-3 times per week always receive great service and nice food fully recommend to all.

Went in as a large table food took 35 min for the first plate to arrive… and there was 6 of us food came out one at time over 45 min. The kids pizza I could make better at home was just a wrap with cheese and ham not even able to be picked up with little fingers. Messed up orders. Coffee was late and then came out same order diffent size cups. Paid a lot of badly Edible food. Don’t waste your money go somewhere else

Has to be one of our worst experiences . As a larger group ( and a family of hospo workers we messaged to book a table , daughter arrived before us , no table set aside , ordered an paid for her families drinks . We arrived almost 10 mins later ordered our drinks , which arrived first ...Ordered meals altogether 8 items altogether , they came out one by one , with other tables meals in between . Last dish .... Mushrooms on toast .... With cheese in dish , nowhere on menu did I see this ...lucky I didnt vomit everywhere.Having chosen this place for a birthday lunch its a decision we all regret . Would have been better with a picnic at the park 😖

Great food and service, very reasonable prices!

The interior decor is not inviting but there is an excellent outside seating area. The staff are great the person behind the counter was a brilliant salesman with good humor. I was not excited about the cake selection BUT the eggs Benedict hashbrowns with crispy bacon were the best ever!! It makes me wonder what other what other yummy treats are on the cooked menu.

Wonderful experience. Quality of food, staff and ambience - everything is great. Taste and presentation was good. Staff were experienced and lovely to talk, helpful to provide different add on to the food. Any dish they served was fresh and clean. Would certainly go back to enjoy my meal again... Thanks for all the service.After a tired lake trip I and my family deserved a break, quality food. You made my day.

Highly recommend this Cafè to anyone visiting or living in Taupo. If youre looking for value for money this is the place. A lovely Cafè nestled in the corner of Suncourt Plaza and the food is divine....... Try their Freakshakes, absolutely spectacular

Absolute worst experience. Ordered brunch via Uber Eats. Waited around for 2 and a half hours, order continuing to say "Order is on the way" for about an hour. Tried calling a dozen times but no answer - No communication from the cafe whatsoever. Then decided to go in to cancel in person. When arrived the cafe wasnt very busy at all. The man who served me was very rude and not apologetic in the slightest. He simply cancelled the order on his screen and said "There. Its been cancelled"No communication, no apology, and no food. Do not recommend!

Terrible experience. Booked a table on first table to bring my kids for breakfast on my birthday for 9am to find they were closed. Called the café to finally get through to the owners who said they didn’t know when they would be open and would need to call the staff to confirm. Online says open at 8am, first table states 9am for booking. Finally get a call back from the owner at 9:30am to say they will be open shortly and would I like to still come for breakfast. By now I was long gone as I’m not sitting outside a café with my kids on my birthday for half an hour for when they feel like opening up! Thought I would try this café as a local for a change and won’t bother going back.

Took the inlaws here for brunch during their visit from Christchurch. The menu was huge and managed to satisfy the desires of the fussier people in our group.The coffee was tasty. The food was well portioned and very delicious.Friendly service and will be back.

Wholesome hearty food at a very reasonable price. The flat grilled veges and chips was very tasty and the chips are freshly made. We both had a seafood chowder each, the bread soaks up any left overs nicely. The lemon on the side is refreshing and a nice touch. Tea was good as was the Pinot Gris.

Once again a beautiful breakfast from the Fern Cafe in the Suncourt Plaza. Gari and Gagan are the best!!

The best bowl of coffee I have had the pleasure of enjoying.The chickey who served us was so lovely, friendly, and down to earth and was a real help. She made a mean as coffee and the chef made the best "Big breakfast " Ive had (and Ive tried many around the countryas well as the beef burger the hubby partook in. Would definitely recommend grabbing a coffee and a bite here.
