The Fat Cow - Restaurant in Tauranga, New Zealand
The Fat Cow in Tauranga
Description
Privilege
Interesting and mostly nice food. Some of the root veges were undercooked.Service a bit lacking. Slow at times and the waiter didnt seem fully familiar with the food options
MoreOk. The food was good, but pricey but thats expected. But oh my god please get rid of those electronic ordering devices. I get it! They help you partition the final bill for a large table. But the servers no longer know who has what, so when an order comes out they go up and down the table shouting out the order waiting for someone to claim it. Its annoying having to listen to that so many times. I had to stop my conversations with friends at least 8 times to accommodate the servers calls. And the icing on the cake was that there were a few duplicate orders when the system had to be rebooted, and there were 4 orders with no name, defeating the entire purpose of accountabilityThis process was enough to prevent me from returning. Please sell the tables and go back to a traditional pen and paper, and a well trained server that knows who had what.
MoreVery expensive for mediocrity. The tablets creat a really disconnected experience. Does the staff have to stare at us whilst we order?
MoreOrdered sharing plater and food was dry and chewy, couldn’t even cut into beef brisket, ribs tasted like they were a day old and microwaved, sausage was burnt, only good thing were the chipsService was good4/10 wouldn’t recommend
MoreVery good food. Helpful. Maybe turn heaters on sooner. Warm the plates keeps the meal warmer .But yes worth going .
MoreA favourite, very good food. Repeat customer, love the food. Service... Whats the word.. indifferent. Like, heres your menus, and then noone comes back for 25 minutes and you have to go to the bar and ask the barman to send someone over to take the order. And then that person is all in a huff like its just so annoying that you have the audacity to want to order food. Tonight we gave up waiting for our order to be taken, and went to McDonalds instead
MoreWe had a lovely lunch. The food, gin, iPad beer and above all the service were all top rate. This will be our go to when in town.
MoreFriendly quick service, Fillets that is the best I have had in New Zealand! Loved the sides of potato gratin and super tasty deliciously balanced salad. Absolutely wow!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
MoreSo Im originally from America and where Im from is like BBQ capital. Stopped in Saturday for a late lunch. And OMG!!! Yes please, I will have all of it! It is the closest to my hometown BBQ as I have had since being in NZ. I do not like Ribs, but they were amazing. Fall off the bone amazing. I have it had that at one other place in Nashville TN. The brisket was perfect, chips and Cole slaw were delicious. Now the Mac n Chz....just omg mouth watering fire as hell!!! Cannot forget our server he was absolutely amazing as well. I am horrible with remembering names, but its was Saturday the 13th around 3-4 when we came in. We will def be back!!! 100/10 would recommend!
MoreWent here for a birthday dinner with a few friends, we all enjoyed our food and the portions were alot larger then we were expecting! Service was good, pretty quick on the meals/drinks and plus our waiter was great, a real laugh. Would recommend 👌
MoreWe have been dining at The Fat Cow since it first opened in the Mount and still one of our favorite family and business destinations for dinner or a great lunch. We happily travel over to the Mount for a Saturday or Sunday lunch. The food is always great, the atmosphere relaxing and welcoming Team of people. The menu has evolved, but remains true to the start. I would highly recommend this restaurant when youre in the Mount!
MoreAwesome dinner. Great spot - well worth stopping for dinner. Love the full flavour.
MoreAmazing food, the prawns were the best Ive had and thats come from a die hard seafood lover
MoreVery disappointing, we had a sharing platter and pork crackle ( this was send straight back,as it was way too hardthe meats, beef brisket (parts of it was tender the rest tough ),pulled pork (tough and stringy), sausage ( god knows what was in it , it smelled and tasted terriblebuttermilk chicken was way over cooked .....the chips were nice and the cocktails ,too.Overpriced!
MoreThis ones a keeper, we spent a fair bit and were all talking about our meals and not what we had spent once we got home. Great evening that comes highly recommended in my/our opinion...including the kids 😀. My only critique would be on the chorros and that was more on texture rather than taste, they were doughy/heavy in the middle rather than being lite. Anyway am splitting hairs as would be back in a heartbeat. Thank you 😊
MoreLast night we arrived in the Mount and hadn’t booked anywhere to have dinner. George worked hard to accommodate us and we got a table. The food and service was excellent! Highly recommend this place to eat. The ribs and burger are great and the entrees were really good too.
MoreGreat vibe and delicious food! Originally had booked a table outside as that was all that was available. However the staff managed to get us a table inside when we arrived - yay! Also our waitress (Kaylawas great, good humour and friendly service.
MoreI went to the fat cow on a Saturday night 18th June, there was a big group of us. The food was exceptional and so was the service. We were seated promptly and a waiter went through the menu and the specials of the night. Every part of our experience was pleasant and the food was delicious 😋. I had the ribs which were epic 😆, the highlight of the dinner was the baked brie, it had rich notes of honey and was amazing 👏 Will definitely recommend this restaurant to others 😊
MoreExcellent vibe and wide selection of boutique beers. Team very helpful when my order wasnt quite right, they were so helpful in changing and making right. Mistakes happen but its the end result that mattersGreat food resulted!
MoreReally great scotch fillet steak. I ordered medium rare and was perfectly cooked. My husband said it was one of the best steak he had for a long time : Will be back again when we visit in 6 months time.
MoreArrived without a booking on a busy Saturday night so were seated outside which was cold and very noisy with traffic. Asked if a table should become available, could we move inside and ten minutes later we were inside and warm. The staff were all very friendly and attentive despite being obviously very busy. The food was probably some of the best. Steak was cooked exactly as Id asked, wait time wasnt too long. Deserts were delicious. Will definitely visit again
MoreFantasticTalk about people who know how to cook meat to perfection and you will have to talk about The Fat Cow as they are masterful indeed. My partner, against my advice and best wishes like her steak medium well, never have I tasted such a moist and succulent med well as what they served, truly impressiveQuick and efficient servers plus a fantastic selection of tap beers makes this a venue to savour.
MoreVery South American meat style. The grill is full of flavor and served by an amazing and friendly staff. I cant wait to come back in Tauranga and try it again!
MoreAmazing restaurant!Incredibly delicious food and drinks, best pulled pork Ive ever had, most tender beef brisket Ive had. Everything was soooo good. Drinks were good too.We were so full after the sharing platter but it was so yummy we had to try a dessert- best churros Ive had!!! Will definitely be back.
MoreGood solid tucker with some family favourites and nice place to watch the world go by.
MoreThe Fat Cow is a Great place for all family :steaks were delicious, kids meal was perfect :wide range of beer was impressive ;)Highly recommend :)
MoreAmazing dining experience, very friendly and helpful staff, the food is exceptional, every dish we try was spot on, thank you so much for two amazing nights.
MoreGreat food, great service. Highly recommend the brisket 😋
We were a little disappointed by our experience here the other day after wanting to come here for a while! It was a Monday so maybe that had something to do with it. The staff were very friendly and nice, it’s just the food was not very good. We got the pork crackling with quac and it was so hard to bite I felt like I was going to chip a tooth. It also didn’t have much flavour at all. We also got the fries and they were very oily, with not much potato inside a crispy shell. The buffalo chicken wings we got were great though! We were super disappointed by the corn bread, which was very small for the price and tasted weird with an overpowering taste of honey. Perhaps the main meals would have been better, though you would expect everything on the menu to be tasty.
MoreHands down the best restaurant in Mount Maunganui, we love food and this place hit the spot. We had a weekend away and aspired to try multiple restaurants and ended up coming here twice 🤣 the first night we got the sharing platter for 2 with sides and it was delicious, the second night I got the pork belly which was delicious and hubby got the scotch and loved it. Highly recommend, also the cocktails are the best I have had and I have had many haha the margarita and pina colada were fabulous....we are from the Waikato, but we will be back 😁
MoreLast time we went it was awesome. This time the food was really average although the service was pretty solid once they got to us. Probably wouldnt go back considering the prices.
MoreGreat to see the restaurant was full again! Staff are very friendly and attentive. Meals were a generous serving and delicious. We had ribs and a burger. The only niggle was the cocktails, not cheap, small glasses, completely full to the top with crushed ice. Maybe 3 or 4 sips and cocktail was gone, left with a glass full of ice! I did give feedback to server at the time.
MoreGreat service. My burger was cold and would have gone back if I wasnt so hungry. All the burgers on the table were also cold. Unfortunately the pulled pork taco wasnt pulled pork and was disappointing. On a good note though the kumera fries and the burger were tasty.
MoreGood service and great huga food so delicious just wait a long time, green salad so fresh , pork Robbie is nice
MoreWe came here, in a party of 6, to celebrate a friends 60th.All the staff were friendly, and our waitress Marahia did a fantastic job.We opted for a selection of entrees and these were so amazing: dumplings, prawns, sticky ribs, buttermilk chicken, fried camenbert. The main dishes on the other hand were mostly dissapointing:* The steak was perfectly cooked.* The Brisket was great with lots of vlavour.* The pork belly was juicy and at room temperature however the potato mash was cooler than room temperature. I asked not to have Kimchi salad and opted for a side of roast veggies instead. I still got Kimchi & the veggies were heavily sprinkled with salt, so I couldnt eat these.* The burgers were big however the meat patties were cold. These were send back to the kitchen to be reheated and being returned to the table after +-5 mins as cold as it was when send back. So the friends decided to just eat it as it seemed to be in the just too hard basket to send back. This was our first dining experience at The Fat Cow and our last.
MoreMy family have a very bad experience tonight.the eye fillet was all over cooked and burned.it took 8 of us like over an hour waiting for food and some tables came after us already finished their food and gone but we were still waiting for our food.and when I paid the staff asked me did we have icecream for kids because included. But they didnt give us.and kumara fried came after our steak.its my first time we came there and never come back again.today is my daughters birthday. So upset.
MoreI was very impressed by the professionalism and kindness of the staff and really enjoyed the food. We enjoyed the beer tasting and experiencing different craft beers. The only difficultly was narrowing down to 6 out of the 16 offered which all looked great.I loved seeing the cooks preparing the food, visible for everyone to watch and cooking on hot coals.Wed definitely recommend the sharing platter, corn bread, and the pecan & boubon pie.Our two year old daughter ate unusually well and said many times that she really liked the icecream. 5 stars for sure from her.Thank you for the great time and memories for our family.
MoreLoved it and amazing. A seat at the counter by the barbeque on a chilly winters night is a must do.
MoreStaffs are absolutely nice and helpful and food is delightful!! I cant say the price is cheap but worth it.The ribs have amazing flavors and even drinks were great. Definitely I will visit here.
MoreFood was we presented however when someone pays top prices for food I expect my ribeye as per my order. It was served well done and not medium rare. Off putting for such an expensive cut. However the staff and our waitress were very pleasant.
MoreThis is the best smokey ribs I have had in NZ. After eating at Smokey Ds in Des Moines Iowa I have tried many ribs in NZ only to be sadly disappointed. Not this time. Delicious, moist and smokey. Hubby loved his steak, too.
MoreWhat a pleasant experience to dine at La Vaca Gorda or Fat Cow! We had the shared plate with a mix of the best meats, soft bread, coleslaw and chips. Along side, green salad and mac&cheese. The decoration is awesome, clean and spacious. There are some outside sitting, high tables and inside plenty of seating. What impressed me the most was the drinking menu, incredible variety and quality. Will come back certainly!
MoreThis restaurant would be my top restaurant of all time. The food beats any steak i have ever purchased at any restaurant in my lifetime. The staff are amazing, efficient friendly and appear to love their job. Met the owner who is also just like his staff friendly, chatty and very accommodating. My only complaint is they dont have a fat cow in wellington. Nothing will live up to this place again. Service and food far beyond my expectations. Prices may be higher than some other places but worth every cent. Knocks every other steak Ive ever had out of the ballpark. Try it if youre ever at the mount, you wont regret it.
MoreThe Fat Cow has the most delicious BBQ I’ve ever had, to the extent that I ate there two nights in a row when I was staying in Mount Maunganui.I tried the brisket and short ribs, both of which were amazing. Eating at the kitchen bar while chatting to the chefs it was clear that they’re passionate about BBQ, and it shows in the food they produce.I’ll definitely be going back the next time I’m visiting the Mount.
MoreUpdate: Nine months ago everything was perfect, but theyve changed a lot since then: no more beans, the amount of chicken was cut in half for the shared plate, and the churros and pecan pie are totally different dishes. The meat is still good, but Id definitely not recommend the deserts anymore. Really disappointed on the changes. All delicious, but the fried chicken, the beans and the brisket are amazing, not to mention the craft beers 😍 Highly recommended. Edit: The desserts are yummy as well, specially the pecan pie.
MoreMy husband & I had a lovely weekday dinner here. One of my favourite dining experiences in New Zealand. A must for all meat lovers! Come hungry. The wait staff & chef were friendly & the atmosphere was calm & inviting too. If we come back to the Mount one day from Australia were sure to come back here.
MoreDelicious BBQ food. Good selection of local craft beer (16 tapsand plenty of wine too. Service is excellent and plenty of information provided. They have a comprehensive selection of hot sauces available, including a Ghost Chilli. We seems to always get the sharing platter, its very delicious, and more than enough for the two of us. Save room for desert, the pecan pie and ice cream is delicious.
MoreOverall good experience. Nice atmosphere and good service! Food was good! Meat was not quite as good as I was hoping.. but nothing can really measure up to real Texas style BBQ, still tasty though. Good flavours just slightly dry at times.
MoreLovely cafe with good selection of meats and beer. I had the sirloin steak which was delicious (just the right amount of fat to meatand also the chicken wings starter which were a generous 5 pieces for $2.50. Service was friendly and attentive and restaurant was modern, clean and had a good vibe. Good for groups with a few large tables and booths. Will be back!
MoreVery nice lunch at the fat cow. Yummy slow cooked meat wrap and burgers. Huge fries. Affordable. Fast and friendly service. We will be buying another grabone and take the kids. Great kids menu too.
