Modern European dishes and a nose-to-tail menu in a laid-back dining room with Bentwood chairs.
The European in Melbourne
Description
Privilege
Very nice restaurant and food. The service was excellent, friendly abd efficient staff.
MoreAbsolutely a good restaurant with fine food and wine. The wine list exceptional. Octopus is a must ordered dish. Definitely will come back.
MoreService was really excellent - staff were friendly and helpful, great atmosphere, food was a little pricey but was really good. Great place to make a special occasion in the city even more special.
MoreWent here for lunch with friends and enjoyed the service and the food.
Great Menu & Wine List. Must try in Melbourne
Consistently good food, unprentious environment, interesting wine list...hard to get a table
MoreHad lunch here today pre Hamilton and was not disappointed. I arrived early and was made feel warmly welcome. It has been awhile since my last dining experience here and can I say that it just gets better. Ally was amazing! Please never let her leave! Her warmth, lovely personality and exceptional knowledge of the menu and wine list definitely second to none. Give her a pay rise!!The food was incredible - bone marrow entre for me, anchovy toast for my friend who liked it so much that she ordered another! Main was Ox tongue and escargot for yours truly and chicken schnitzel for my friend accompanied with a side of the delicious Brussels sprouts. We would have stayed there all day if we didnt have tickets to the theatre. Thank you so much Ally for looking after us, you are amazing. We are already planning our next visit. Big shout out to Ally!
MoreI sat at the bar and I had fantastic experience.I ordered the steak poivre frites. It was beautiful, cooked medium rare - how it should be.For dessert I tried their rhubarb brûlée, which is a crême brûlée with rhubarb at the bottom of the dish. Delicious! Coffee was good too.I loved the vibe. It felt very Parisian. The staffwas extremely niceand you can tell there’s a good team spirit when you see them interact with each other. 👌🏼
Moregreat share plates and awesome wine list! highly recommend!🍾🍾
Coming to this establishment was a terrible decision.Instead of birthday cake, I was taken post theatre to The European. The cafe front door had a sign saying entry was only through the winery, however immediately after entering the winery we were bluntly asked why we did not go through the cafe door. There was barely anyone in The European, however we waited a disturbingly long time for the staff to decide who would seat us, continuously passing us off to the next person. This whole time all but one of the staff stared at us in disdain.I could understand this behaviour towards rambunctious young people, however not towards three formally dressed people, standing quietly out of the way. When finally sat, we were placed at an unset bay in what looked like a storage room and bathroom entrance- boxes lining the floors. This was because there were “no set tables in the European”, which made no sense as this table was also unset.Between the cold flares from staff, being placed in a storage closet, and the ridiculous price of $16 for a piece of slice, we caved and left. With the treatment it was evident we were not welcome in the eyes of the staff. The one waiter we were palmed off to seemed to express empathy when we walked out, and was the only positive element. Thank you Sir. The rest seemed almost smug as we left.It was quite a mood dampener, after hearing excellent things all week about wines and desserts, only to be made to feel deeply uncomfortable.I did not enjoy being made to feel like I was a nuisance on my birthday when my whole group of three adults was nothing but polite.I would not recommend attending unless you have an adult over the age of 40 with you.I am quite upset still by this treatment and experience.
MoreI had the gnocchi here yesterday and can’t stop thinking about how good it was. The salumi platter was also incredible and service perfect.
MoreLast time I came here for a lunch before the lockdown. Last night we cameHere for drinks and I couldn’t help myself to order a dessert. It was so good. The staffs all very friendly and knowledgeable with the wine selections.
MoreGreat dinner. The Schnitzel is non standard but a nice cut of a chicken.
Wonderful food with 1st. Class wine service.
Not perfect but the atmosphere this restaurant exudes makes up for it. We love that the furniture is a bit rickety, its small and tight spaced inside, the waiters are very busy, its noisy... its perfect! We had a mid morning breakfast and just sat by the front doors and watched people coming and going whilst we enjoyed our coffees and Croque Monsieur and Toasted nut and seed egg and avocado. Without a doubt will return for lunch and a dinner too!
MoreParty of 6 seated at the far end. A little exy for a couple the dishes given the serve size, otherwise very good, waiting staff casual but professional.
MoreGood service. Attentive staff. Very friendly. Delicious Steak Tartare. Ill be back.
MorePrompt cheerful service. Food delicious. Perfect pre theatre venue
Wow... the food here is exquisite.Very $$$ but my god it is delicious
The food is excellent. Service was ok - we had to wave down the waiters a few times to get their attention and we were served by 5 different people. But still nice.
MoreOMG what happened to my beloved European in lockdown? I’ve been there twice since we “opened” and the quality of service and regard to me as a customer had gone down the toilet. It was the premier place to enjoy a steak and Pom frittes. Should we now call it McEuropean? We were shunted through the process of ordering and even denied a complimentary serve of bread. The laminated menus are one pointer to the decline of a once venerated Melbourne venue. Please, please make the European a place to eat again!
MoreA masterpiece of flavours in simple yet utterly refined dishes. The service was friendly, attentive and professional, polished in fact. We’ll be back as soon as possible. We need more of this fabulousness. Truly a cut above the rest.
MoreIt’s always good here. Lovely atmosphere, sophisticated and delicious food, good wine list and top staff. Hard to beat at any time. Highly recommended.
MoreFantastic place as always with attentive staff that offers genuine customer experience. Well done to team European 👌🏼seafood dishes were a delight. Will be back soon.Side note…please bring back the squid ink pasta with crab meat 😁
MoreExcellent service from the staff. I had the porterhouse steak and it was delicious. My wife had the grilled octopus and the steak tartate which she mentioned was the best she has ever tasted. Thank you all the European team. Great experience!!!!
MoreOur family had been going to The European for birthdays and other special events for years. The food is the best in Melbourne! The service is always top class and ambiance is first rate. Highly recommend
MoreOld school Italian! A Melbourne institution. The gnocchi was amazing. Soft and pillowy. Best I’ve had. Polenta chips are also a must every time we come here or city wine shop. I was curious about the orange rose wine and they let me have a taste to see if I liked it. The wine was really unique, not too sweet and a bit dry. Just how I like it! Prices on the high side but well worth it for a treat!
MoreGood location and attentive service. Its on the noisy side and a pretty ordinary wine list. Our table of four had mixed reviews on the food with the fish being enjoyed and the steaks to be nothing special.
MoreTHIS is the true Melbourne restaurant experience we know and love.Such a great dining experience, that reminds you why Melbourne is the culinary capital of Australia. The ambience is relaxed yet sharp, the first rate service was charming but deliberate. The menu is brilliant and incredibly delicious (the cured King Fish entree was superb, while the Chicken Schnitzel with Italian slaw was a masterpiece).Excellent wine suggestions completed this exceptional lunch and we are already planning our return.
MoreA classic Melbournian establishment that instantly transports you to European bistro vibes. Classic dishes executed very well. highlights were there perfectly succulent, sweet and juicy prawns... and the grilled saganaki with figs that perfectly encapsulated the sweet and salty flavour combination. It would be remiss of me to not highlight the incredible wine selection including the option to purchase bottles for take away. One of the best places in the CBD to purchase wine.
MoreIn a word? Belissimo.Just what I needed.Food is yum. Wine is so very mmm. And I spoiled myself with fresh fluffy bombollinoService is of highest rate.Highly recommend on a summer day or night
MoreGreat food, great starter of Garfish (an Aegean sword fish), roast leg of lamb, great Champagne, nice salad, and a delicious cheesecake. Great service and perfect atmosphere too. We had a table for 7. Top marks
MoreRating 3.5 We went to the third floor, AER bar.Service was good, cocktail and drinks were good, the steak, not so good. The meat was grisly, and my partners side salad, the cabbage was really soft.
MoreI spent a month in Melbourne on a business trip, and this is one of the few places that kept me from becoming homesick.Great service and food. Period. The organic steamed vegetables, for example, is one of the best dishes I’ve had anywhere. Fresh vegetables coupled with the perfect seasoning.
MoreNot perfect but the atmosphere this restaurant exudes makes up for it.
MoreFood is alrigth in taste, well presented dishes and staff is relatively friendly. Pricey food for the location, finding very sneaky that not even asking for sparkling water (which is terrible by all means), staff was pushing on pouring bottle after bottle and then sneakingly charging over $10 each. Had to tell them a couple of times to stop this and just bring tap water, much better 😊
MoreNot bad for a quick drink and oysters.Excellent service even I’m there for a glass of bubble and oysters.Bread serve warm and delicious.
MoreThis is a Melbourne institution, it has a traditional European feel and great friendly service. The meals are a staple, not fancy...just great because you get what you expect to receive.
MoreFor such a stylish venue its good to report that staff are efficient and helpful, with no touch of arrogance (unlike other CBD breakfast venues). And, of course, this is as it should be! Being stylish or trendy should never coincide with being haughty and inhospitable, especially in a hospitality venue! The vibe at The European is on the dignified side but we, widely travelled cafe goers, felt right at ease and had no problem finding good things in the menu. In fact, for me, one of the tests of excellent food and customer service is the ability to create a meal from the extras menu and have it prepared and presented with grace. Although avocado and Vegemite on a toasted bakery item is a veritable breakfast of the gods, its not always on menus, but I had no trouble creating this duet on the base of a Dr Martys Crumpet at The European. Delish! Service and style - thank you.
MoreWhat a fabulous place for breakfast, staff were great, fast service with food was exactly what I needed to enjoy.
MoreFavorite spot for lunch (one of them), definitely awesome for breakfast. Great eggs, coffee and hot breakfast options paired with great European feel and service. Try the black pudding sausages or the Arnold Bennett omelette...
More$$$ The pros: Excellent meals, served by usually effecient and friendly staff. Its very popular and quite busy, recommend booking. The wine and beer list is quite extensive also. A good dining experience. The cons: $4.60 for standard coffee is expensive particularly when other cafés will serve a similar standard coffee with either bagel/muffin/croissant for around $5-$7.50.
MoreThe food here was alright, though for what we got I did feel it was a bit pricey. I was going to rate this slightly lower, but one of the servers was quite friendly with me and my colleagues at one point and I thought that effort was nice.
MoreSensational coffee. Fantastic wait staff (best in Melb?!)Could benefit from larger serves of coffee however and presentation was a bit underwhelming for the price. This is how eggs on sourdough toast ($16was served.
MoreNice and cozy atmosphere...booking essential to avoid disappointment. Great spot for pre-show dinners. Always find the wait staff very efficient and friendly. Good wine list and specials. The menu does change up a bit every now and then. The starters are very fun and different. We had the crab tart and zucchini flowers this time around. And gnocchi and mushroom truffle risotto for our mains. Meal was finished off with a bomb Alaska.
MoreWonderful service staff even with our two young kids (6 and 2 years old).We ordered the Chateaubriand to be done medium to well but it came well and very dry. The mushroom sauce was nice but wished there was more. For the price I wouldn’t order this again. We also ordered the black and white linguine fresh crab tomato and basil pasta. This dish was lovely. Not spicy as we requested for no chilli. It reminded me of Singapore’s chilli crab dish but cooked in pasta. Delicious! This dish saved the day.
MoreThis place is pretty exceptional for both breakfast and dinner.Staff are attentive and know the menu. There is quite a range of options, but be sure to check out the specials.Classic, simple and elegant food.
MoreAn ever green favourite of Melbourne. Its French looks are a signature, with a very vibrant atmosphere too all day. Open from breakfast it goes all the way to dinner. The menu is updated regularly and everything is great. Service is really fast too. Perfect for a casual eat, a breakfast meeting or a romantic occasion. Love it.
MoreExcellent food and service in a beautiful little Cafe opposite parliament. Slightly pricey, there are definitely places with better value for money in Melbourne but its nice to go to occasionally.
MoreExcellent food and very knowledgeable and effecient staff. Exquisite European wine list.
