The Enchanted Highway - Sculpture in Williston, United States
This place is dope! Ill flush this out at some point.. hehehe
Did not stay at the hotel, but ate at the steakhouse! Prime rib was amazing!!! Very neat to sit and visit with the artist. Suchba unique experience. So glad we did it!!!
The restaurant is amazing. Food is all home made and delicious. Owner is also the sculpture of all those statues on Enchanted highway. Very friendly staff. Delicious food. Rooms are so nice.
We didnt stay at the hotel, but we stayed at the campground a couple of nights and ate at the restaurant both nights. Food and service were great! Rib eye steaks were cooked perfectly. Pan seared fish was delicious!
Thank you Gary for the fun place you have created. We enjoyed ourselves very much although we were kind of disappointed with one thing. We had thought we booked one of the jacuzzi rooms but upon arrival found out they were not available. The sculptures are immense and a great sight to see!
Stayed here on our way to the Sturgis bike rally - the hotel was clean, interesting decor. The food was fantastic. Gary is a very friendly owner who goes out of his way to make sure your stay is perfect. Definitely would stay here again and will recommend to others
Have to really give them credit for an imaginative business in a remote part of southwest North Dakota. Castle theme is carried through from the front facade to the lobby to the shower curtains. Full size, wood floor gym with lots of basketballs, a Foosball table, a few sets of corn hole to play. Exercise room with nearly ten pieces of equipment. Two hot tubs that work well though a little dated. Continental breakfast was light, but area was clean and well maintained. Rooms are clean and all have a separate bar area with sink and mini fridge. Restaurant and bar look pretty nice. Bar particularly is decorated with medieval theme more than other areas. Throughout lobby and main hallway are many suits of armor the owner has built. His metal work is on display with weapons, shields, other artwork and obviously featured on the Enchanted Highway, and in front of the hotel with a dragon and knight sculpture. Owner is a friendly man and seems to be hands on with his business as he was checking the continental breakfast on a Sunday morning.Couple of improvements could happen. Some stains on the carpets in high traffic areas, ceiling tiles stained with little water leaks, pillow cases yellowed with age, towels getting thin, paint scraped off walls. All pretty cosmetic.
Gary the owner is amazing he checks you in to a huge room with modernized kitchenettes and the slight look of royalty in the atmosphere, then he serves you in the beautiful bar then supper in the dining room full of waterfalls and nights of armor, and all 9 meals he served our crew were amazing, breakfast in the morning he had time to visit and discuss politics was very neet....I do not know when he has time to build the amazing and beautiful welded structures all along the enchanted highway on his own dime none the less...plus he runs the souvenir shop somewhere in there. It is a very fun accomidating unique adventure we will definitely be back and telling our friends about it!
Nice place, the tavern is HCA but the parking area is not HCA. When we pulled up there was a white truck taking half the HC spot, we managed but for someone who is disabled and without assistance, this would not be a good place to try to enter, at least we could find a good place to enter with a wheelchair. They do have a lift once inside.
This is a wonderful place to stay while checking out the Enchanted Highway and the beautiful surrounding areas in ND! The room was great! Two sinks in the large bathroom, and an area between the entry and bedroom area equipped with a sink, microwave, fridge, table, and bar seating under a second TV. This transformed the feeling of being in a traditional room to a home like feel! Gary Greff and family create a home away from home experience. Also, theres a full gymnasium if the need to shoot some hoops strikes you! What a great, fun place to stay!
Came here for an anniversary double date. Wonderful food -- the ribeye was the best steak Ive ever had! Especially enjoyed the cheese curds appetizer. The atmosphere was a nice allusion to a medieval asthetic, while still retaining a modern fine dining feel. Gary was an incredibly friendly, hospitable host.
Great place to stay. Food in the restaurant is homemade and excellent. All staff is very friendly and the owner is amazing. Best place we stayed our entire trip.
I work on the road full time doing cell tower inspections and maintenance, and small towns are slim pickings on lodging. This place was the most amazing and hospitable hotel I have been in for the price in a LONG time. One of the owners greeted us after a long day, checked us in, proceeded to cater us and show us around this EPIC landscape of a resort. The restaurant and bar areas where amazingly well done and the med-evil theme throughout the establishment was super cool. Little details everywhere. The food itself was awesome, barkeep was a really nice and awesome person. The owner I talked to was also responsible for the amazing works of art along the enchanted highway. Such a cool story to be able to chat about over a couple drinks. The rooms themselves were very clean and tidy, and carry the theme throughout. nice mood lighting, dimmer switches, actual working fans in the bathrooms. This is a GEM hiding that needs more attention to discovery. If you are passing through the area, or just looking for a cool spot to checkout for awhile, there is soo much to discover and checkout here. 10/10 would come back again when in the area, and will be recommending it to our other crews that come through as well.Hunters, travelers, please give this place a shot!
Food could be better. Service was slow. Did not offer can pop. Not sure if I will eat there again.
What fun! We did not stay at the hotel, but we stopped in at the tavern for drinks and appetizers after driving the Enchanted Highway. The tavern was surprisingly busy and the owner (and artist of the sculptures on the Enchanted Highwaygreeted us and served us. He told us about the history of the place and how it came to be. He was a super nice guy and it was very interesting. Beer was cold and cocktails were tasty. We shared an order of onion rings and they were hot and plentiful. If youre in the area, stop in for a drink or a meal and enjoy the cool ambiance!
It was amazing, the owner is incredibly nice, and food was delicious, many activities to keep kids entertained such as a weight room, basketball gym, and hot tubs. It also is a great place to stop for adults it has a very nice tavern keep that serves a wide variety of alcohol with a juke box. The rooms were in perfect condition and very well kept. Its also not near any giant interstates so it makes for a very peaceful nights stay. It also has a very nice fireplace outside for families to sit and talk and enjoy the medieval aesthetic. Honestly just an amazing place to stay on a vacation or road trip. Everyone in my group thought it was a wonderful place to stay!
Gary was wonderful! We came in the off season, so we were the only ones there. It was great to sit down with Gary and learn all about his plans for the hotel and the Enchanted Highway. It was a wonderful experience! I highly recommend for anyone looking to get off the beaten path and experience something new and different!
Great owner and staff, I work in the road a lot and every time Im even close I stay there. Bar and restaurant in hotel, basketball court and a work out area. Its in an old school and has a really good vibe.
I loved our stay at Enchanted Castle. You can tell a lot of care has been poured into it. We were the only ones that stayed that night, but they made dinner for us, despite their hours saying they were closed. The food was great and Dave showed us around and made sure we were comfortable. It was awesome having the hot tub to ourselves and the gym to ourselves. The owner, Gary was there in the morning and I loved my conversations with him. It is a great goal to pour your soul into something. Then I loved the dragon and knight in front and seeing the rest of the Enchanted Highway.
Here for a wedding, unprepared, people in line for 2 hours. Didnt stay here overnight, glad I didnt,. Neat atmosphere, just need to pay attention to details.
Had to reschedule last minute due to bad weather. Management was really accommodating and understanding. We were able to reschedule for the next day.We then got in really late but managment made check in really simple. The tavern wasnt open when we were there but breakfast was a really good cold breakfast spread. Kids enjoyed playing in the gym while we pack up unfortunately we didnt get time to enjoy the hot tubs. The outside and inside has its own quirky charming castle decor which we loved. Kids loved all the suits of armors. The rooms are good sized with a small bar area and a large bathroom.
Great place with a funky atmosphere, located inside an old school.Rooms clean and spacious, basically half the size of a full classroom.Dining room service in the old gym, excellent food, steak, wings.Definitely recommended.
Very Clean unique rooms.Food and all hotel staff were excellentVery reasonably priced.I would recommend the experience to anyone. A drive down the Enchanted Highway and then a castle.Worth a look🤔
We followed the enchanted highway all the way to the enchanted castle. And the actual artist of the metal sculptures served us dinner! What a cool experience!!! I got the castle burger and it was delicious!!! Loved the fries!!
This hotel/restaurant/bar is the lifes work of the owner. He took the old school and turned it into a pretty neat place for this small town. The rooms are nice. Big bathroom, nice beds. The bar has video gaming, cold beer and a nice liquor selection. The restaurant has a good selection. This is small town USA doing something cool. It reminds me of the Renaissance Festival in a small way. There isnt always someone at the front desk but theyll get you taken care of.
Rooms are big and clean! I got in a little late. I the cook was on the way out. STAYED and made me dinner real quick. Staff were are super friendly. I will definitely be bringing my kiddos here! I travel 9 months of the year and one of the best hotels Ive stayed at.
Absolutely INCREDIBLE.First off, this entire set up shows the dedication and love they have put into this.An old school transformed into an Enchanted Castle Hotel, Bar, and Restaurant. The place is gorgeously decorated inside and out. The staff, while light, is amazing. The Excalibur Steakhouse has delicious food for a good price. While we didnt personally sit down on the Medieval Tavern, it looked wonderful. Our entire family was thrilled and loved this place. We spoke to Gary, the creator, who informed us of everything hes working on and it shows true heart to make these items. And yes, hes still working on it all, which means itll be even more incredible when finished.A must stay as you pass by Regent, ND.
This place is a joke!! I had read up on the Enchanted Highway and was very excited to see it. Nearly every exhibit on the highway had a sign of some kind advertising for the castle. At first glimpse, I thought the hotel looked kinda tacky from the outside. I went inside looking for a souvenir from the Enchanted Highway... right away I noticed a weird smell. I decided that it may have been from the pool, even though I didnt see a pool ?? There was no one at the desk, no one in the lobby (really didnt have a lobby, just a oversized entryway), no one in the hallway... The building itself looked very dated and not so clean; not really dirty, just looked like it was not cleaned on a regular basis, the outside looked about the same with some overgrown grass and weeds. It in NO way looked like a castle!! Didnt look at all like what I expected based on the signs I had been seeing for 30 miles. We did not stay here, and really glad that we didnt... I feel like it would have been even more disappointing if we had. After seeing the inside, I got out as soon as possible! Its really a shame, because the exhibits on the highway and outside the hotel are pretty cool.
The Prime Rib was amazing. Honestly the best Prime Rib I’ve ever had. We were served by none other than the dreamer and creative mind behind the Enchanted Highway Gary Greff. Man what an amazingly friendly man that loves to share his passion and story with others. Hotel was very clean and roomy. This was an amazing destination spot. Everyone was extremely warm and friendly. The hotel has a steak house, tavern with some gambling machines, a gym where kids can rip and run, two hot tubs, a conference room, and his latest metal creation he’s building out front ( a knight, his shield, and a dragon). My life is enhanced after meeting this amazing man and seeing his creations. Just a beautiful soul. Thank you for sharing your talents with the world❤️ This isn’t chain hotel. It’s more like a unique bed and breakfast. Come here with an open mind, and a relaxed vibe/intentions and you will enjoy it. It’s minimally staffed to keep down costs, so be understanding. If you aren’t open minded, a constant complainer, a negative Nancy, and you aren’t understanding don’t come and bring your negative vibes to the property. This isn’t the place for you. Go to holiday inn and leave this place to those that love to dream, love unique things, and find beauty in Gary’s passion.
I first learned about the Enchanted Highway in 2007 when I read about the sculptor Gary Greff in Smithsonian Magazine. When my wife and I planned a trip to the Dakotas, I knew wed have to stay at his hotel. Its exactly what the description states: a former public school transformed into a roadside lodging. This is not a corporate hotel, but rather a labor of love from Mr. Greff and his few staff. Dont think of this as a holiday inn, but rather a quirky bed & breakfast...My wife and I shot some hoops in the old gymnasium, ate dinner in the old cafeteria (now the Excalibur steakhouse; the food met our expectations, and Mr. Greff was our server), and had drinks at the bar (formerly the gymnasium stage; the bar is well-stocked, moderately-priced, and possessing of good atmosphere).Overall, my wife and I had a wonderful stay, and on our next road trip, this will again be an overnight stop for us.
I called earlier in the day to see if they would be I was told yes open at 5 both Bar and Restaurant. I let them know I was coming. My family and I showed up the restaurant was not open. We waited forever. The server was intoxicated and took our orders wrong. And then the owner came in a half an hour later very intoxicated trying to take her orders. He didnt even know we were there. The food was subpar. And two of our Stakes were not the correct order and we were not comped for it after we complained and told them it was wrong. And after he admitted he wrote it down wrong. We didnt receive refills on our drinks we were checked on maybe once in the entire room where we were left alone. The food was already overpriced and look like they jacked up the prices even more. And after I totaled up what it would be somehow it came up to be at least $20 more than what we ordered. Not happy at all I dont know how this place has four stars! Very disappointed!
What a wonderful stay! The hotel was clean and neat. The staff was very friendly! This was a great choice over a chain! If you get a chance, you should stay here.
What a really cool history this place has. I enjoyed the time I had dinner with my family in the steakhouse. The new sculptures outside are still being built and are going to be awesome when they get finished.
First, lets discuss the story. Regent, ND is an agricultural town in the rural midwest. Population is around 100, give or take. With the advancement of technology and increase in corporate farming, these small towns have been slowly dwindling out of existence. One man had a vision (still holds that visionto attract people to this rural town and bring more economy to the area. Thus, the creation of the Enchanted Castle & Enchanted Highway. The hotel was the old Regent High School. The hotel was very clean, the standard room was extra large. It included 2 queens, a sitting area with wet bar, mini fridge, and microwave, large bathroom with 2 sinks and shower. 2 TVs, one in front of beds, 1 in wet bar area. There were no "chemical smells" a previous review mentioned. Traditional wall AC unit. The bar area was very warm and welcoming, the dining ambiance wasnt anything special (the castle theme carried throughout), but the food was very good. The owner, Gary, operates on minimal staffing, so after hours checkin requires going down to the bar and getting assistance. And the wait at the restaurant can be a little longer than usual, but the customer service is fantastic. You can tell how much it all means to Gary. His latest sculpture is a knight and dragon in a battle, just outside the hotel. Upon completion, (2 years Gary said), the dragon will breathe fire! There is a full sized gymnasium with basketballs/hoops, 2 8 person hot tubs, good sized gym up stairs from the gym (not ADA accessible), sitting area in lobby and outside. Although the warm weather brings mosquitoes, so outside seating isnt really an option in the evening. There is some wear on in areas as it is a converted school, but what has been done is phenomenal. Come here with an open mind, and a relaxed state, and you will enjoy it to the fullest. There are some wonderful things to do in the area if you love art, history, and/or hunting, but it does require driving. The Enchanted Highway is a must! To see the decades of work by Gary is absolutely phenomenal. There is a beautiful Catholic Church in Loffer, ND, (along the routealmost 100 years old built by Hungarian settlers. There is an area museum in on Main St, but we did not have time to visit it. Lemmon, SD is about an hour away with the Worlds Largest Petrified Wood Sculpture Park with an attached museum, Kokomos Gallery (Where you see the amazing metal work of John Lopez), and Grand River Museum (western history and dinosaur fossils from the area, with some displays about Creationist Theory). The best part of visiting this area is how friendly everyone is. Everyone waves on the from their cars as you pass by each other. All these sites and attractions were created by locals who have a love and passion for their communities! It really shows, and it an experience all in itself.I highly recommend the Enchanted Castle and a visit to the area. It is a true diamond off the beaten path! Hopefully it will grow and Garys vision will come to fruition. I plan on returning.
Bed and pillows were horrible. My back is sore now. Hot tub was filled way too full, overflowed when we got in. Hottub water smelled old. Cool concept for a hotel.
The theme is great, knight armor in the hallways. The bar doesnt open until 5pm. Looks like its getting fixed up nice. They must be using airfreshners or a fragrant cleaning solution. Within a minute my moms eyes were blurring, she felt like she couldnt breathe and her arms felt tingly. My skin started itching by the time I walked to the restroom. We had to leave the building. Once outside, both of us felt better. If you have allergies, I would not go in.
Want to be treated like royalty? Heres the place!! What a magical experience! We drove the enchanted highway route and were fortunate enough to be able to stay the night at the Enchanted Castle. Gary was very informative and so positive and passionate about his hometown. Also.. Michael, an excellent chef, and Bill, b the bartender and check-in guy were so friendly. Highly recommend!
We did not stay at the hotel, we ate at the Tavern on a Sunday afternoon as the steakhouse is not open. The food was NOT good, And very expensive. The man said he would give us a lower price with a couple kids meals, but he didnt. We have heard the steakhouse is good but WOULD NOT reccomend the food on Sunday!!. .
This is a very unique property and they provide excellent service. The owner is almost always on site and is very attentive to your needs. When we initially checked in we had some issues with cleanliness with our room but they made sure we got into a different room which was perfect. I love the separate bar/sitting area each room has as well as the double sinks in the bathroom. The gym was a unique feature that my family enjoyed using to play basketball and foosball and air hockey. The hot tubs were well maintained. The only thing I would have improved is how late the bar stayed open since I was closed by 930p. I highly recommend supporting this local establishment as the owner works hard to bring more features to this community!
This hotel is the ultimate destination if youre looking for charm, uniqueness, inclusivity and a one-stop trip. I really cant expand enough on how wonderful our stay was. Firstly, our room was just the basic room and it was GIGANTIC! It was basically a studio apartment without an oven. The property has a tavern with a ton of variety, popcorn and root beer floats if you dont drink or are underage. There is a steakhouse (we were there on a Monday and it was closedthat has water features and ambient lighting. There are two hot tubs AND a full school gym with hoops, cornhole and exercise equipment. The drive down the Enchanted Highway was incredible and made even more so due to the hotel owner being responsible for all the sculptures and the concept! He took the time to chat with us at dinner and breakfast and made our experience even more special! I was expecting a great time and it ended up being better than what I presumed.
Amazing! What a great experience. This place is unique and the atmosphere was so warm and welcoming. We really enjoyed meeting Gary and his great staff and learning about the history of the enchanted highway! We will be here again and will be recommending this place to so many others!
Our kids love the Enchanted Highway, and had a great time at the Enchanted Castle. The gym from the old school was perfect for them, and they loved the hot tubs. Rooms are clean and spacious, and breakfast was good. We would definitely come here again.
Such a fun experience. The rooms were clean & spacious. The gym was a great place to have the kids run off energy. Staff was super friendly.
This was a once in a lifetime stay in a quaint little town of Regent, ND. It was the one of the cleanest, affordable, unique accomodations on our two week trip through the wild west. It is a school turned into a castle where "They treat you like royalty." It includes huge rooms, an actual gym, fitness room, two hot tubs, full bar and Excalibur Steakhouse. All decor is Medieval. WORTH CHECKING OUT ON FB!!
I always enjoy my visit here. We go to play basketball whenever I visit my mother in regent. There are plenty of things to do here also a great place to stay if you are an avid Hunter. With plenty of rooms, a hot tub, work out area, you cannot go wrong.
I love great prime rib. More than any other meat. So I was excited to try out the Excalibur Steakhouse in Regent. Bottom line? It was the absolute worst prime rib I’ve ever had. Tough. Flavorless. Expensive. Service was slow. As a final disappointment, they were out of the bread that comes with the meal. I expressed my disappointment in the meat, meal and experience, only got “I’m sorry.” Not an echanting evening.
We love this place every time we have the awesome privilege of staying here. Out of six yeras we have stayed here four times traveling from California to Wisconsin. Such a treat! We discovered it viewing the Enchanted Highway on YouTube. Have had the awesome privilege of being served ice cream, breakfast, dinner, checking in and just hanging out with the man who did the schulptures along this route leading to the hotel itself. We have found no other sleepover place such as this
Most interesting place ever. Former school reinvented as motel, tavern, and steak house. Rooms are spacious with full kitchen and huge bath with double vanities. Upon arrival, we thought it looked a little shakey, but once inside, we loved it. Dinner at the steak house was excellent, and the included breakfast was more than adequate. "Castle" decor everywhere including full suits of armor in the hallway. Waterfalls and fireplace in steakhouse, and friendly staff. We were pleased to meet Gary who created the Enchanted Highway north of town and is part owner if the hotel. We would definitely return if ever in the area again.
This place is fantastic. The guy who masterminded this whole project is a genius. Parts of it look pretty sketchy but everything is top quality and most importantly, this place has a hometown, homemade, pride-of-ownership kind of feel. The employees work really hard to make your stay nice and comfortable. The food is great and the prices for food are great too. Like the sculptures along the Enchanted Highway, the hotel building itself is in a constant cycle of improvement. There might be some signs of construction around the property, but it didnt bother us during our stay. Its actually kind of refreshing to see an owner who reinvests in his business and strives to make it better ever day. You can tell that the hotel and Enchanted Highway is the grand vision of a guy who is trying to bring some art, craftsmanship, and memorable experiences to those who visit Regent. I would definitely recommend it.
I absolutely LOVE this place. We stayed in the honeymoon suite and the pictures on here dont do it justice. It is awesome! The food and atmosphere is AMAZING! I HIGHLY recommend taking a trip down there! Gary the owner is also the one who did all the sculptures along the highway. He is a very friendly, great guy to visit with and he has an awesome staff!
