The Earl Of Strafford - Country food restaurant in Rotherham, United Kingdom
Really disappointed with our visit which is a shame because the venue is nice and only around the corner from us but the service needs massively improving. The staff are we’re not attentive at all. The “for the table” starter came but no side plates so we had to use napkins. My stake was overcooked, which is easily done, but took a long time to come back out. After the manager saying we would get something for free or something off our bill it never happened. Our dirty plates left for a long time and no one ever came to ask if we wanted more drinks. If it was busy I’d understand but it was quiet and as we went to settle the bill. Because no one came to our table to sort, a load of staff stood around talking. The service makes it breaks the experience and I’m sorry to say your service falls well below basic expectations.
Food ok nothing special! Atmosphere very quiet as not many other people in due to it being Bonfire night apparently! Staff good and attentive. Nice place though!
Lovely meal, fair prices and beautifully decorated in a building with character, every visit the staff have always been really friendly and helpful. Will definitely visit again and recommend to friends and family.
The food was excellent, came out hot and quickly. One staff member called Lisa really stood out from the crowd and will be a big reason for our future visits. We will recommend the venue and especially the staff to family and friends.
I believe a change of management has happened recently so needed to go to see how it is as this place, up until the last couple of years always had a good reputation. The staff are friendly and welcoming, the prices are great and the food was reasonably good. Lovely place and definitely worth a visit.
Had Sunday lunch, mega, perfect for a big appetite, unlimited Yorkshire puddings, roasties and gravy, five different veg, the pork melted in your mouth. Paige went above and beyond with the service she gave us. Highly recommend and will definitely return
Great food and does serve gluten free items. The garlic prawn starter had thick lovely bread but only 5 burnt prawns we sat in an alcove with a flickering dark light. The rest of the starters and meals were superb. I will return and would give 41/2 stars if I could
Excellent friendly service. Menu offers good choice. So pleased to hear that dogs are welcome throughout whereas before the dog friendly area was only in the old tap room side. Thank you so much x
This restaurant is a beautiful old mansion that’s been sympathetically converted.. It is an intimate space. The waiting service is excellent and extremely attentive…We both enjoyed our dishes. My hake was cooked perfectly albeit the mussels were over cooked unfortunately.. My partner had the bangers and mash but we both found the sausages had been overcooked.. Having said that the sausage meat was delicious. If not for that this restaurant would have scored a 5* as everything else was to a high standard.. Thank you all for a most enjoyable evening.. We will be back!!
Food and service were wonderful!! We will be back very soon...
Called for a drink and had impromptu meal, glad we did, it was lovely, fish and chips and Bacon/mushroom burger, both delicious, the fish was huge and you could tell it was freshly cooked. Unfortunately didnt get his name but the young man who served us was lovely, very helpful and attentive and very knowledgeable
One of the single worse dining experiences of my life. Used to love coming here but the change of ownership has really changed my opinion.Went today with a large party. The kids meals seemed nice. However the hour and a half wait for food was going a bit. I had the burger that was very well done and dry. My wife had the pie that was raw with overdone chicken. Not one of the staff asked how the meal was or if everything was alright (assuming they knew it was not2 hours in to waiting for puddings we had to take them home as it was far too late for the kids but when we got home surprise surprise they were not great either.Really disappointed unfortunately I could not recommend anyone eating here and especially if you go as a larger party. The long waits I could have handled if the food was good but it was not. And the staff not apologising or acknowledging any of this puts it right at the bottom for me.
Very nice meal. Went following a christening so were a few of us. Very friendly staff
Had a lovely Sunday lunch fir our daughters birthday. Plenty of food found it strange that the childs meal and adults was basically the same portion size so going for childs next time. Only downside food was like warm and and had to ask numerous times for extra gravy. The staff was extremely friendly .
Absolutely wonderful place. Lovely attentive staff and gorgeous food. The pub has been done out to a really high standard and looks fabulous. We only ate off the set menu which was amazingly priced and big portions but we fancy the afternoon tea next time. We asked the staff about it and found out you can upgrade to tipsy afternoon tea which includes 2 cocktails for £17. We cant wait to return. Bonus is its dog friendly so we can bring toffee & treacle along next time.
My wife and I had an excellent Sunday lunch here. Good home cooked food. Pleasant staff . I had the roast loin of pork and my wife had the Turkey. Plenty of fresh veg and so nice to see proper roast potatoes not those that have been done in the fryer. Extra gravy, roast potatoes and Yorkshire puds available if you ask. Sorry no photos but as we will be back I’ll include them next time
Visited the Earl of Strafford today for a Sunday lunch. This pub is a must. Personally I regard the Earl of Strafford, one of the best places to eat in the area - food was faultless again, really enjoyed it. Thanks to Nicole for finding me a Sticky Toffee pud when the kitchen thought they had none left - much appreciated. Highly recommend!
Our experiences at earl of Stafford was brilliant it was our mother in laws wedding James the manger/Paige/Nicola was amazing really helpful went above and beyond to make sure everything went smoothly, buffet was amazing we couldn’t have ask for anything betterThank you so much ☺️Would definitely recommend for any type of function ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Beautiful decor, amazing food, great prices, friendly helpful staff
Nice family meal to celebrate great exam results. Sunday menu very good and reasonably priced. Service a little slow but an enjoyable time.
We ate here yesterday. The inn is so unique with its look and you cant help but be taken in by it. We had the lamb shank for lunch and it was delicious. The attention given by Lisa our waitress was flawless and we enjoyed her smile and humour. We would come here again in a heartbeat.Thank you. You wont be disappointed.John and Val
Beautiful place, been there today for Sunday lunch the place is lovely, very good parking, lots of outdoor tables and seating. The food was very good , its almost excellent maybe a bit more attention to presentation and veg could have looked a bit more appetising, but the amount of staff their efficiency and the general feel of the place more than made up for it. Best place weve found locally since moving here 2 months ago. We will definitely be going again and would highly recommend to others.Good luck to everyone involved on the businesss, I can see the model you are working to, and think you are pitching it about right. 10/9/22 UPDATE.WE have been again for a booked meal, this is our 4th time, and I have to say, we were very very disappointed. The standards have gradually fallen since our first visit, still a lovely place, staff still very friendly, when you can get one. We were there for an hour and a half and achieved a first course. It took some time for the food to appear, it wasnt all that hot, but we carried on. Not once did a member of staff appear in our area to either us, or the other three couples. We all finished our meals and waited and waited and..... etc etc. Eventually, one chap went and fetched a waitress to take his sweet order, she didnt appear to have noticed that we were all sat with dirty plates waiting to be collected and to give a sweet order. We gave it another 15 minutes but she still didnt come back with the sweets for the other couple or to see to us. We gave up, paid and went home. I sent an e mail hoping that management would take the constructive feedback, Now 5 days later, I have had no response. We really wanted to make the Strafford our first choice restaurant but Im afraid we will not be going back. I can live with the occasional poor night, but we have seen the standards fall over a short period of time, and can only assume that management dont really care, not a good start to a reopened business .
Lovely meal at the Earl of Strafford, pleasant surroundings and staff welcoming and attentive. The meal was excellent, I would recommend you give those place a try, newly refurbished.
The Sunday lunch food was ok (low level and basic, compared with similar establishments and costand prepackaged from suppliers, carrots did have taste so I’m assuming supplied from a local source or supplied fresh. Pudding - if you like Salted Caramel the go for it.The FOH staff are very helpful and so charming - it’s just by the Quality of ingredients used and ease of delivery from the kitchen, letting the environment and FOH staff downBM -Le Manoir aux Quat’Sasions
Had high hopes but left very disappointed. Cheery staff member took party’s drinks order. Returned for food order. Disappointed to be told they had run out of fish and chips at 7:05pm on a Friday evening. Plumped for chicken and mini chicken and mushroom pie.Enjoyed creamed mushrooms on bruschetta as a starter although would have been much nicer if it had been hot rather than warm.Main arrived and I had to put my glasses on after thinking I must have ordered from the children’s menu. The mini pie was MINI and together with the bubble n squeak pattie and broccoli spears (!were all soggy and unappetising…as for the piece of chicken, this looked as if it had been left in the oven and forgotten for an hour after it had been switched off. So shrunken and tough. My party then toyed with the idea of a dessert but when I made my selection, espresso chocolate brownie together with this and that and then to be told like the fish and chips, they had run out, I gave up.Overall a great let downVery unlikely to return unless I want just a drink as the waiting staff asked if we wanted more drinks about 6 times, unsurprising when you find out the cost - which may explain why the prices for the soft drinks aren’t shown in the menu!!Sad fail…
Brilliant venue, called in for a meal, both had steak. They were both perfectly cooked to how wed asked. Highly recommended.
We arrived around 6.30pm on the off chance that we could be fitted in for a meal for 3 people. Was told the waiting time would be 45 min (it was not busy)Decided to have a drink in the bar and was fine , unfortunately the staff were very slow and complained that they had too much to do . It was hardly busy ? We waited around 20 min for our meals , my steak was raw and my husband complained over his lamb .When we finished our plates took 30min to be removed, by this time I just wanted to leave. Must say very disappointed and probably will not return. Shame really needs new happier staff who are willing to go above and beyond and not moan about customers just arring at the door !
Fantastic service from our server Lisa. Nothing was too much trouble for her. The rest of the staff were very friendly too.The food was very very good and plentiful. It was hot and fresh. If you fancy a dessert then try the "Sticky toffee and rum pudding" . Absolutely to die for.The place is under new management and from what we experienced it will be a place to visit again and again.Thank you.
Been for Sunday Lunch today with my family and we all had a fantastic meal. The staff were very attentive and welcoming. We will definitely be dining here again.
Beautiful building .Beautiful views from the conservatory. The staff are so welcoming. Once served at the bar n seated service was on point. Unfortunately my classic burger was a let down. So Basic a bit of Iceberg some kind of sauce underneath with a burger pattie that didnt fit the bun n was well over cooked .Would I go again Yes to give them another chance as the smell of fish n chips was lovely. So Are the staff so apologetic about my meal.
Had a lovely time here, had been refurbished to a very high standard. The staff are very friendly, and efficient, Lisa went above and beyond to cater for everyone. Food was excellent, with a great choice.
Visit for breakfast got off to a shakey start as we were met at the door 10mins before our online booking time of 10.45 to be told we dont open til 11. Then why does the website say bookings available from 10am? After this initial tete-a-tete the lady (manager?agreed to us coming in and all was forgotten. She went onto explain that its the fault of the group company ( Stonegate Group )who wont ammend the local website to reflect 11am opening and not 10am even though she has requested it several times. Its lost a star as a result because of this. Get it sorted Stonegate!!So, inside was large and spacious and with a comfortable variety of dining chairs. Tick in the box.Breakfast menu was plentiful covering everything from super size full English down through crushed avocado and eggs benedict to bacon and or sausage sandwich. Food ordered, sit back and relax with drinks and admire the soroundings. Tick in the box.Food arrived and was well presented, very tasty and very reasonably priced too. Tick in the box.All in all was impressed by what we saw and ate. Cant remember last time I was in the building, easily 40yrs ago but well be back again very soon!
Driven past this place many times but never called in until today.Super attentive staff. Friendly and welcoming. We took our dog and they were very accommodating. They gave the dog free beef straight off the Sunday roast and we had a beer and wine, followed by two cappuccino and two “crumble of the days”. Sat outside and soaked up the sun in the beer garden.
We visited on a family occasion for the lunch time menu. The place looks so nice & cosy , newly refurbished inside & beer garden. It all looks beautiful. It’s an excellent menu & good value for money . The food was tasty , well presented. Excellent service from Lisa. Nothing was too much trouble. I would highly recommend this lovely place. Really impressed.
We recently had a visit to your Restaurant, following the refurbishment & was very pleasantly surprised.Staff were attentive & prompt. The food was very nice.Scarlett was our waitress & had a polite nature. The only down side to our visit, was My glass appeared to have a lipstick imprint on.I asked the barman to change the glass, which he did straight away, apologising as he did so.One little tip for the waiter & waitresses would be,to replace napkins that fall to the floor. Also consider, not everyone wants to have close service @ their table.Cleanliness in this present climate of rising Covid cases is still a concern for many of Us.Thank- You,we will be returning.
Went here for dinner last night. Menus looked good but unfortunately there were a few items that weren’t available. Also, if we ordered pie, we were told there was no pastry for the pies. Very reasonably priced and the food we did order was very tasty. Waiting staff seemed new and didn’t really know what was what. Service was slow. Would go again though.
We thought we would give it a try after the refurb but wish we hadnt. Sunday lunch was the opposite to what they advertised. Mash was instant, roasters were clearly frozen and not roasted until crisp, just soft and greasy. The beef had obviously been kept warm and was that awful grey colour. The Yorkshire was like a large crisp and there was no lashing of gravy. The veg was luke warm and looked terrible crammed in a small bowl. No condiments on the table and a tiny helping of Horseradish, that we had to ask for. Other than that the place is lovely and the young waitresses were very pleasant.
Popped in this place for a couple of drinks and my god what a little gem its, the interior is absolutely beautiful, staf very welcoming and has plenty of space indoors and outdoors and prices are very reasonable, looking forward to go back and try their menu 🍹
Myself and my husband went for our Sunday lunch last week and what can i say except wow !! Fantastic decor, fantastic staff and exceptional food 💕 we have been for our 20th wedding anniversary tonight and yet again food and service was 5 stars, thank you Helen and staff for a lovely evening 💕xx
Excellent lunchtime meal with work colleagues. Pub has recently been refurbished and has a fantastic conservatory which is where we were seated. Will be back!
Following the recent refit we were worried (having always been regularswhether the menu change would affect quality and price. We were so wrong to be worried. the food is as amazing as always, both the sunday and weekday menu, and the price is still incredibly reasonable. the staff and service are second to none and would recommend this venue to anyone.
Hmm!... Dont bother! we was greeted at the door by a waitress and it went downhill from there! she took us to a table oh.. its not that one, then another no its not that one!.. ah its this one! what drink would you like? what beers have you got?... I dont know! I dont know what day it is today! and on that note she abandoned us!.. I summoned another waitress to take our drinks order and ordered our Sunday meal at the same time! After waiting half an hour for the food to come it was tasteless all of it! the meat was ok but the rest of it was poor! old soggy veg, it was tasteless very bland! it just wasnt rite! very disappointing, we did complain and they reduced our bill but we would have rather had a nice meal! we wont be going back which is a shame!
Newly rebounded. Visited for the first time for drinks and food. Had a well kept pint of landlord. Also had doom bar and ghost ship on draught. Good food, the 4 of us had 4 different meals and we all enjoyed them. Fabulous outside space at front and back. Well be back.
Had to wait an hour for our food then they had missed my neices meal off so had to wait another 10 min for that we were compensated with our second round of drinks for free, we also ordered desserts they missed one of those off too!! it was the Eaton mess think they must have run out of meringue and ice-cream as it was all syrrup, we were compensated with 3 of the sweets for free there were 6 of us as it was my sister in laws birthday used to visit this lovely place regular but never again what a shambles I know its only recently been taken over but not good enough!!
Had a great meal with my wife. All the team were friendly and helpful. Since its refurbishment the pub is a much better place to be. James the manager was welcoming everyone at the door
Went for a birthday meal a few days after the refurb & thought the food, staff & the pub itself were brilliant. Had a burger & it was really nice with properly cooked fries. Staff were very attentive & the manager made a real effort to make sure we had enjoyed ourselves.
Had a lovely meal. Lamb shank was delicious. Beautiful building & new decor. Very pleasant staff, Lisa very chatty & helpful. Definitely come again!
Sunday lunch, veg ….only just slightly warm, over cooked…. Meat I left every bit it was tough, dry and couldn’t even cut it. Service wasn’t much better, never asked if our meals were ok at any point but I got the feeling they knew it wasn’t. Only praise I have is the lovely young lady serving at the bar very polite and helpful.
Pleasant friendly service. We had light bites and they were more than adequate. Very nice cakes too.
Lovely meal at the earl of Strafford! Had really nice service in a relaxed atmosphere. The food was really tasty and was even better it was in the eat out to help out scheme. We booked online the week before to get a table booked for the evening. Good booking system and was quick and easy as I prefer to book online than to ring. Anyway really nice meal with large servings. Everything tasted home made and not greasy. Really good tasting thick chips not to heavily fried and really nice steak with fell apart in my steak and ale pie. The place had tables separating each other so you are at a distance and we were advised to do the track and trace and all staff site correct PPE. All over we loved it and was a nice venue so we are thinking of going back for Christmas time.
