16th century hillside pub with brick floors, wooden scrubbed tables and a garden with ponds.
Great outdoor, undercover area with a wood fire 👍👍
Surely one of the most picturesque pubs in the land! Beautiful gardens, stunning views. We only stopped for a beer ( wonderful pint of Harveysso cant speak for the food but the ambiance inside the pub was great as were the staff. I would give the place 6 stars if I could.
Hidden gem. Good beer, good food. Tiny.
Cannot fault this little gem. Amazing range of real beers, stunning food, great service and on a summers day/evening, it’s top quality sitting in the stages garden.TOP TIP: book for food way in advance if you’d like to sit on the terrace, great view.
First time here and really enjoyed the experience good service and food.
Delish food, highly recommend the prawn and crayfish sandwich if its on the menu.
This is the most beautiful pub I have ever had the fortune to see. The location is wonderful and the view on a clear blue day is to die for and may as well be heaven on earth. The food and service was extraordinary and every time I spoke to a member of staff my face lit up. When my food arrived I savoured every last mouthful and smiled in absolute bliss.
A fabulous place to have lunch. Great food. Great service. Beautifully laid out. Lovely views.
The direction at the end of the journey suggested I drive through a walk path. This narrow lane must have been closed off to traffic a while ago.
It pains me to write this as we live locally and have been going to the Duke at least a couple of times a year for the past 18 years. It’s always been a go to place, particularly for special occasions. Our visit today however was so disappointing. Not the food, which was as excellent as ever, but the service which was very poor by any restaurant standard and certainly by the Duke’s standard in the past. We waited 40 minutes for someone to take our food order, our main course turned up before we’d finished our first, no one came to our table to check whether we needed anything even after we complained. The general inattentiveness made for such a disappointing experience - a shame as it was our wedding anniversary treat. There’s relaxed yet attentive service and the Duke really need to work much harder to get that right.
A beautiful pub with a lovely garden with plenty of space outside. Delicious food.
Super Country Pub with amazing garden areas. Excellent selection of Wine, Beers, Gin, Rum, Cider etc.Food although a bit pricey was beautifully presented and delicious.Ambiance and decor of the Inside Restaurant was joyful.Highly recommended 5* Pub.
Beautiful find half way on our country walk only had a liquid refreshment but the plated food looked lovely wafting past us!
Walked in to pub today and ignored for ten minutes.staff said they wasnt open but they served a customer with drinks before me.staff very rude and ignorant.and to think this was a recommendation.will not be returning.i work in hospitality and would have stern words with those staff.absolute joke.
Dullsville for vegetarians! This place caters well to lovers of seafood and meat but has a limited and unimaginative number of dishes for vegetarians. It may be that I visited during a menu rotation that limited the vegi options but to offer only a vegiburger as a main course seemed to show the interest and focus of the chef and his staff was elsewhere. And it was a dull paste of a vegiburger at that - so thoroughly pasted through the food processor it was impossible to discern what vegetables were in it. It felt mass-produced rather than created in-house. The meat burger on the other hand got an entirely different treatment - it looked like it had texture and that some flair and imagination had gone into creating the dish.As I say, it felt very much like the staff enjoy creating dishes containing seafood and meat and the vegetarian option is considered a distant afterthought. Disappointing.
Absolutely gorgeous pub in a stunning location. Staff were amazing. Food really good but quite pricey. Ideal for a special occasion
Charming pub restaurant in gorgeous setting, delicious food. On a busy Saturday evening we sat in the garden room which was full of diners enjoying themselves - poor acoustics meant it was very noisy and so it was very hard to have a conversation. There were a couple of gaps in service, long wait for menus at the beginning and the pudding menu never came but we had tired of the noise by then. We had booked an outside table on the terrace that wasn’t available which was a disappointment. They were shortstaffed. The food is good and the building and setting are lovely but I would not go again on a busy Saturday night.
Lovely place to stop for a drink after a walk. Not had food here yet but will have to on my next visit
Beautiful pub, in a picturesque setting, outstanding outside spaces
Did not eat as missed lunch time. We found the staff unfriendly and unwelcoming. Not enough staff for the amount of people needing service on the day we were there. We left without even having a beer.
The pubs location is gorgeous and remote, the gardens are amazingFirst impressions were great and we went and sat in the restaurant. We ordered two starters and two mains it took a while for anyone to come to us but that’s fine as we had a few drinksThe starters were a little bland, for dinner I had the vegetarian tagline with hazelnut which was nice my partner had the pork and said it was delicious - this is their signature dishHalf way through our few hours there something happened behind the scenes and this meant the staff weren’t focused or checking on people enough or to be honest at all.We ended up leaving and paying in the pub because no one was around for some time
What a superb find! We were travelling to Wiltshire and wanted to stop for a pub lunch - we couldnt have chosen a better location. The pub is idyllic - quintessentially English - as is the little village its set in. We had a late lunch booking and a couple of the dishes were sold out, but, thankfully for us, we wouldnt have chosen them anyway. What we did have was absolutely delicious - good quality ingredients, cooked extremely well and presented beautifully. The staff were courteous and friendly. We sat in the garden room and the view was stunning. All in all a great start to our weekend away.
Just went there for a meal. Beautiful garden. Have a marquee so plenty of room. But book in advance
My favourite pub in the UK. Best atmosphere and amazing food
Had such a good experience here… chef was so accommodating in making something off menu that was gluten free and vegan as we hadn’t booked. Enjoyed our food in the most beautiful garden surrounded by the sound of running water from the ponds on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The most perfectly perfect afternoon! Thank you so much Duke of Cumberland! 😁
I have to say, this little gem has to be one of the most beautiful settings for a pub Ive ever seen. Stunning views from a huge garden. No play equipment, but the children had a lovely time exploring the various paths and ponds. Great selection of drinks and food and exceptional service from very friendly staff.
We had the most fantastic evening at the duke of Cumberland celebrating my sons birthday with 70+ friends and family. Simon, Aimee and all their brilliant staff made it a night that he, I’m sure will remember forever. We were treated to Simon’s amazing Caribbean BBQ , which was delicious! Along with his own authentic Rum Punch which was smooth and very moreish! .He also arranged Fantastic Fireworks and music which rounded the evening off beautifully….So ‘THANK YOU’ Simon, Aimee and staff for making it a night that will be remembered!!I really would recommend highly the Duke of Cumberland for any occasion Large or Small….And what a ‘BEAUTIFUL’ setting!!!
Food was excellent with varied choices and all staff very helpful and attentive despite being so busy.
Little gem of a pub. Great food, drinks and Cuban cigars if you are into it. Lovely surroundings.Staff are very friendly and accommodating!Love it and highly recommended!
Super lovely spot for a drink after a long hike! Amazing views and great selection of gins and ciders. Thank you very much
One of the most beautiful pubs Ive visited. The pub is set in stuning gardens which includes an outdoor fire. But it gets better. The restaurant is outstanding with exceptional food and service. The chef really knows what he is doing. We will be coming back to Weat Sussex regularly just to visit this pub.
Location is absolutely gorgeous, I have been wanting to come to this place for one year. Unfortunately the experience was very disappointing. Service was very slow and not attentive, once seated we did not get any menu, we waited for about 15 minutes and then we had to get the waitress attention to get menus. Have to get again her attention for the wine list as well. It was 3 of us and we order oysters ( which is under the while you wait part on the menu), 2 pigeons, one scallops as starters and one pork belly to share as main course. After about 30 minutes form the order we still didnt have any food and I asked the waitress if the oysters were on the way as we wanted them while we were waiting, after couple of minutes the staff brought all our order together including the oysters which was pretty disappointing and it made no sense. The pigeons were over cooked and tough, the scallops were ok. The gravy of the pork belly was not great and the skin of the pork was chewy rather than crispy. A pity as the place is lovely and hopefully the standards can improve as it is a true waste of potential.
The quintessential English pub. Real ales as well as good wines in the cosy bar or wonderful garden but also backed up with dining rooms offering very good quality food. A little out of the way but worth the journey. This really is a Sussex gem.
Spectacular views across the South Downs beautiful location , good food a little limited but nicely presented.Only downside is very difficult access both car park very steep & Restaurant .
Amazing settings, great food and honest prices. The service was attentive but a tiny slow. Great on a sunny day, the views from the garden are stunning
Absolutely no question, the food was delicious. I had the lamb and my partner had the pork belly. Both were fantastic. Loved the wine selection too.Unfortunately, last night the service really let this gorgeous restaurant down. I understand these are strange times with staff shortages, pressure from the pandemic etc. And I can forgive slow service. But we felt coldly treated, particularly by one member of staff, as though we were a hindrance and just another customer to serve food to. We started to wonder if we’d done or said something wrong.Real shame as the location, setting and food are wonderful. Hopefully this was just a one bad night.
Food is superb, staff extremely welcoming. Prices higher than most bars in the area but you get what you pay for and leave looking forward to visiting again. Restaurant was full and noisy and my wife was a little nervous about the proximity of other guests because of the recent covid but this will not be our last visit. Overall I would recommend to friends especially for something special.
Came here by way of locals I know, I never would have found this place without them and I am so glad I did. The place has a unique mix of really old world vibes with the natural rock, plants, and structure and more modern conveniences like an outdoor firepit/pavilion and fun lighting. The staff were professional and casual at the same time, and were fun to chat with. The selection at the bar was outstanding and there really is something for everyone. A nice, real hearth keeps the area cozy. The smell of the food was absolutely outstanding. I am sad to say I did not try any of it as we had eaten before and were pub crawling, but I regretted that decision smelling the diners dishes nearby. The locals hanging out were even warm and friendly and it was easy to strike up a conversation. I think it speaks a lot to an establishment that locals in the area feel the place is like a second home to them. Cant say when/if Ill return as I am just a traveler, but if you get the chance to try this place out I can say youd be hard pressed to find anything disappointing here.
Fantastic surroundings. Delicious food. Helpful and pleasant staff. However, we sat in the marquee and it was COLD (we had dogs with us). Admittedly it was a cold day (about 3°c), there was heating in the marquee so perhaps if the outside temp was even a little higher we might have felt the benefit of the heating but we were cold. Just saying, think about it. Anyway, I would definitely go back and next time book a whole joint to have at the table for everyone for Sunday lunch. They looked fantastic.
Well off the beaten track and high up with some great views from the garden and the restaurant. Almost alpine ski area views. Very relaxed service so dont go for a meal in hurry.Restaurant has a lovely rustic ski lodge feel to match the views.Good selection of starters and mains. Typical pub restaurant mains like fish and chips and ham, eggs and chips. The fish was huge and eggs were duck.
I have been to this venue twice - both times with my small child. Firstly, this is not a child friendly place so I would suggest you do not go with your children - in fact you are made to feel awkward by bringing your child.Secondly, the service is terribly slow. As someone who professionally visits restaurants and has worked in hospitality, the amount of staff there does not reflect the service.I did not enjoy my experience the first time I went and someone persuaded me to give it a second chance. I will not be returning or recommending this place due to the slow service and disingenuous staff. I didnt want to tip but I didnt want the back of house staff to suffer. The food is good but it doesnt make up for the experience. I have a number of thoughts as to why I didnt get great service but I will share those with other people in my circle rather than here.
This venue has an amazing setting, but unfortunately that doesn’t make up for the experience. The starters was good, not amazing, yet my main meal had to be sent back. It was the most expensive meal on the menu but after just one bite of the brisket and some struggles with cutting the meat, I was left with bad taste in my mouth.Only one staff member made an effort; however, the table was not always cleared with glasses, the wine bucket and bottle still present after we had our coffee.I gave a very generous tip, which, in reflection, did not match my experience. I’d be hard pushed to go back.
I will start with the fantastic large garden which has various ponds and different types of seating areasThere is also an outside real fireplace seating. The views are amazing. The food is great and the pubinside is lovely.Dogs also allowed. 🐕 The staff are very friendly and helpful. Would strongly recommend.
Atmosphere was very good, unfortunately I didnt enjoy the meal, vegs werent cooked properly, still quite hard, especially carrots and cauliflower (cauliflower and cheese recipe), Yorkshire pudding was the only food I enjoyed. We didnt order any desserts, so no comments on this to add.Service was excellent, very friendly waitresses
The Duke is a beautiful hidden gem. The grounds of the pub are amazing with a gorgeous view of the South downs and even box Hill in the distance. The smoke House is lovely with an open fire to keep warm when its a bit chilly. Will definitely drink here again
A wonderful find in the most spectacular of settings a hidden gem. Food was extremely good with a superb menu and the genuinely friendly staff are excellent. No wonder The Duke of Cumberland has had so many accolades, as a connoisseur of all things pubs in my opinion this is the best pub that I have ever visited!
The setting is gorgeous, and the staff were friendly, professional and accommodating. The food was tasty but Id say over priced. And unfortunately when we were there, the gardener was using his strimmer right under us, so that meant fumes and noise
A wonderful setting makes this a magical place with food and service to match. Quite expensive but in my opinion, worth it. My son and I had the crab salad for lunch after a nice sharing platter. Excellent!
Very charming place with a beautiful garden. Decent selection of drinks and tasty food. Definitely worth popping into.
A beautiful pub with a nice view over the hills. The food was exceptional, we had the scallops and burgers, they were fantastic. Prices are on the slightly higher side but worth it. There is lot of greenery around the pub with beautiful lawns that are well maintained. There is a carpark in the back. There is a balcony and some other outdoor seating with a marquee. The staff were very sweet and accomodating. There are lots of walks around the area.
