High St, Bray, Maidenhead SL6 2AH, Al Ḩawāmidīyah
Old-world, beamed inn showcasing owner Heston Blumenthal's gastropub menu, and offering real ales.
Came to the crown after my car broke down in Bray on a Sunday evening, no shops open, and I had my evening saved by the man with a boot full of spare bits for his own car (apparently it has a tendency to fall apart). Thanks to you, I was able to patch up my engine and drive the 90 odd miles home. I am extremely grateful and all the pub staff were friendly and so helpful
Just popped in for a quick drink a beautiful pub but £21.00 for a pint of Guinness and a glass of wine a little expensive
Review in Nov 2022.I have returned to the Crown. Hence, the quality totally change. Last year it was really amazing. This year, this is an ordinary pub with decent food. I gave 5 stars before... but I am changing to 2 stars. It should be 3 stars, but I had a such an high expectations and invited friends for a special occasion, and I was too disappointed.Review from 2021We had pork roast, burger, fish/chips, and appetisers.Fish/chips was great. Only problem is that 5 yrs old son wants fries from the Crown again, which is quite hard to find elsewhere.Burger was thick and perfectly cooked.Roast was great. Wed go back to try different menu.Staff and environment was accommodating for 2yrs and 5 yrs old boys.
One of the worst meals I think Ive ever had and it cost a bomb! Everything was drowning in oil and tasteless. I am really shocked how bad it was considering the profile of the setting. Average service at best, we were overcharged and asked for things that never arrived. We had to chase up drinks that wed ordered. A really disappointing first visit and I definitely wont go back. 1 star because the wine was nice.
Great place for a drink or food. Still a traditional old pub that serves great beers and food. Nice log burner, relaxed atmosphere.
I’ve eaten at the Crown before and I always remembered it fondly, from the ambience to the quality of the food and service however this time the food, specifically the steak, was disappointing
Service is great. Food tasty if a little expensive. However, on my visit it was a very mild evening and I was met with a rediculously hot pub, driven by open fires. It made for a very uncomfortable environment and significantly detracted from the experience. There was zero need for those fires to be lit.
Good wine, food was okay. I was expecting something more from the quality of food, and also felt a bit packed in in the side room. Quiet and lacking ambience.Monkfish scampi - average/dissapointingPork roast - averageNyetimber overpriced by the glassPinot noir by the glass was excellentService was goodFeels like a couple of corners have been cut for the pricepoint. Doubtful if I will return.
Food a real shame given the high profile of the chef owner and the price. Kerridge or Roux arent in any danger. Pinkneys Arms, Golden Ball, Cricketers, Hurley House and Bird in Hand all better locally.
Back to great form, excellent FOH & a relaxed atmosphere. Perfect prawn cocktail & a juicy, charred on a grill, medium rare steak. Baked cheesecake to finish, with a glass of blanc de blanc Nyetimber. Summer was lovely in the garden. Now autumn 22 back inside this historic pub, for rainy day escapes.
Poor service and very disappointing food. Visited on a Saturday lunch time. They were not busy so no excuses for the poor service and very disappointing food. I had a pork terrine that lacked any taste at at all - this was £10 and my main course was monk fish with mussels and chorrito The fish was okay but a tiny piece , there were 3 tiny bits of chorrito 4 cubes of potato the side of a dice and 6 mussels... 2 of which where closed !! So very little for £23. The monk fish meal was bearly warm.My wifes food was no better.Wont be coming back here again
The beer garden is nice, dog friendly and a very social spaceThe fact that you can’t get food to the beer garden now is disappointing, we used to be able to in the pastThe food hasn’t been that good recentlyTheir winter menu was really good last tear, fingers crossed for this yearThe tent is good during the winter too
Cozy pub with an awesome Sunday roast and a quaint outdoor grassy area. Great place for a pint.
Great things: lovely staff, and a good meal that included an amazing potato and celariac terrine. I’d go back just for those things. Less good: buffala and tomatoes served v v cold, buffala had no taste & flavour of tomatoes didn’t come out. A very happy and relaxed meal, nice place, good people.
Really good food. Loved their gluten free options as well. The decor is also so pretty. The only downside was the waiter tool a very long time to take our order
Fabulous setting and environment. Staff couldnt be anymore helpful and although far from cheap the food and setting was worth it. The pork chop was outstanding.
Nice old pub, plenty of parking, free WiFi, massive beer garden with sun and shade and a huge marquee. Friendly service and a cold, crisp pint of Birra Moretti. We didn’t eat but the food smelt and looked good.
It was very busy. We had a delicious Sunday roast dinner (beef). Staff were really friendly & obliging. It was a very hot day & we took our coffees in the garden which was very pleasant
Top quality food, drinks & service (shout-out to Holly in particular- every starter, main and dessert the table had was 👌🏻 and the wine selection was excellent too. Will be back!
Amazing outdoor space and the staff are really nice. The food was quite expensive for what it is which is why we knocked a star off
Fantastic little find this was, a real old traditional style pub with extremely low ceilings, a truly fabulous atmosphere, we enjoyed a three course lunch, the Irish lady who looked after us was really good, fully explained the menu and recommended dishes for us.Very enjoyable, we will return.
Very disappointing!! It was a birthday present for me as am a big Heston fan. We had drinks on arrival at the table, but didnt get offered another during the meal. My wife and son ordered bacon with their burgers, but it didnt come with the meals. So we informed the waitress but when it eventually arrived, was very fatty! The staff were very friendly, the bacon was taken off the bill and the food was very tasty, but, I expected a better service considering the price.
Is a bit confusing when you arrive. Good food but only bar snacks can be eaten in the garden. Was recommended the pork fillet and picked fennel, would recommend.
Posh pub food food extremely well! Stopped off for a spot of lunch. Ample car parking, lovely outdoor marquee area with access to the chefs cooking.I’d just had dental surgery and had to choose accordingly so opted for the wild garlic soup with feta and croutons - it was Devine. I then ordered the beef Wellington and my goodness, what a generous portion; cooked to perfection.
Considering very empty on a Saturday lunchtime and plenty of staff, service not good . Asked for our wine 3 times and it arrived, finally after our starter was served. Starter ok but nothing special. My burger was overdone and solid. The extra bacon, at £3.50, was pure fat and inedible! Definitely not worth the money. Better meals at less pretentious restaurants.Shame , as nice location, but won’t be going back!
Great place for some stellar food and a proper pint (or three). I could sit by the wood stove all day and the staff are meticulous about every pint they pull. Thanks!
Very good food. Nice marquee area for dining. very friendly waiter. A little pricey though.
One of my favourite places to go to - it used to be owned by Heston Bluemental but recently taken over by another partner completely that he did business with. No big changes but the menus have changed and there are some new items and desserts.I was there for the Christmas holiday offerings and opted for the yummy prawn cocktail - the accompanying bread and butter was so good!My main course was Windsor Estate partridge, a small bird that doesn’t taste “gamely” at all, in fact it tastes a little like chicken and this was cooked to perfection and wrapped in bacon with the most delicious roast potatoes! To finish, I opted for the mince pie and coffee, with a small piece of the homemade macadamia nut brittle.Overall the food was yummy and Molly, our waitress was absolutely wonderful and made us feel welcome and appreciated - the perfect mix of service and personality!I would recommend they look for a new coffee offering, it was nice but not strong enough for me but overall, I would always give this venue a 10/10 for everything.
4.5 stars. Loved the old pub atmosphere and the service from our waiter (a guy from Italywas great, he had a lot of helpful local recommendations. Most of the food was great but found the sticky toffee pudding a bit odd…
We were passing Through Bray so decided to stop for lunch. Pubs seem to be the only places you can park in this village. The pub itself was closed The bar and restaurant are under a marquee at the rear garden. Food and service was good.
The Crown is a fantastic place where traditional pub dishes are done with outstanding quality. The service is excellent and the way in which they made enclosed the garden and provided space for guests to enjoy the meal while being safe is also great.
Very tasty, good beer, veg portions are good. The lamb was divine, felt that the starters should have been better for the price. Or a bit cheaper Had the prawn cocktail and the eel with bacon jam. Staff were excellent and friendly. Obviously not the cheapest place but we had a great evening.
It’s Bray but it’s not Heston and it’s a very good posh pub menu in a modern marquee. Most people had either fish n chips or the burger, both were well rated. I had the lamb - was superb. Good for kids. Service was mixed, some good staff here and they were trying. Great value for Bray; not great value for anywhere else on the planet. But it is Bray. Recommended.
May 2021: 4 StarsNot quite the great value and quality it used to beWhilst it no longer seems to be part of the Heston empire Ive had a couple of really great meals here in the past and a return trip felt like a good idea. We went a couple of days before indoor dining was allowed but that wasnt an issue - the open sided "tent" in the garden was really nicely done and there were a few fan heaters around to keep it warm enough too. Probably one of the best examples Ive seen of a restaurant/pub re-working their outdoor space due to Covid and turning it into something really nice. The kitchen and bar were along the wall in the tent too.I had the potted trout to start which was really nice. Followed by the burger for which I had very high expectations from previous memories. It was nice but not quite as good as I remember. I paid the extra £3 for the treacle cured bacon which was a good choice as it as a nice thick slab and was very tasty. It did take the cost of the dish up to £22 which is about as high as a burger ever gets. Beef patty was nicely cooked and tasty and I thought the raclette cheese went very well too. On ordering I did ask if the burger sauce could be kept off and was told this wasnt a problem as it was served in a pot on the side but it turned out it was spread on the bun as well so product knowledge wasnt great. Chips and fries were both excellent, especially the chunky ones that came with the fish, not advertised as triple cooked but did seem like it.I had sticky toffee pudding to finish which was fine but not overly memorable.Overall I think it has gone downhill a little and got a fair bit more expensive than it used to be but it was a solid lunch and I would go back. From 2018: 5 StarsGreat burgerGiven the background of this place youd expect good things and it completely delivers. Its not the cheapest pub with food in the world but everything is done to a great standard.I had the burger which was delicious, melt in the mouth and very tasty too, one of the best Ive ever had. Chips were good too.
Disappointing wait times for drinks and food considering the price point. Fish and chips exceptional with perfectly battered fish and triple cooked chips.Beef roast very disappointing given its £24 price point. Vegetable portions lacking and beef portion on the low side.Nonetheless, delicious flavour on the beef and delightful texture.Service and roast portion size overall weak points given the pricing.
Service was slow and rubbish. Lime and soda was just soda with a lime wedge. Food wasnt much better. Had to return my Crown Burger coz it was raw which meant my partner had to eat her main course alone, as did I. Wouldnt normally be so critical but the exact same thing happened on the table across from us 10 minutes later. Cancelled the 12.5%/£7.44 service charge and left a £2 tip for waiter who got me a fresh, properly cooked burger. Partner wasnt happy. She said I shouldve gave them nothing! I didnt think to take a photo after Id cut it in half and taken a bite out of it. Sorry.
Had an amazing time at The Crown at Bray! The rain did not spoil the tranquil beauty of the garden where they are currently hosting their patrons. The service staff are very welcoming and attentive, while the kitchen produced some wonderfully unpretentious and absolutely mouthwatering dishes from starters to desserts! Definitely worth the trip away from the city!
Wonderful time being The Crown at Brays very 1st customers since lockdown. Brilliantly managed and top class food and drinks. Lovely garden with a summery atmosphere even though the sun wasnt out. Well be back!
Nice food, good service and good quality. Not overly expensive but you do pay a premium.
Making ordinary meals taste extraordinarily is an art, and the Crown has nailed it.A very traditional pub, with extremely polite service and of course tasty food and a good wine catalogue. We went there with the kids and it was one of the rare occasions they also emptied their plates and enjoyed it as much as we did!Definitely going back.
Amazing tasty food.Maybe the best burger I have ever tasted !Lamb was also extraordinary!!Kids dishes available.100% recommended although a bit expensive it is worth it !
A beautiful small, quaint, traditional English pub with delicious food and friendly, attentive members of staff. Dont be put off by the higher prices as its definitely worth it!
The Crown at Bray is a local pub where you get good food and drink. The venues are cozy and the place is just the way a pub should be: Traditional, rustic interior, good beer and nice atmosphere. It is possible to eat.The place is a nice place to be before a visit to one of the better restaurants in Bray.
Lovely garden with a relaxed calm atmosphere. Great bbq food and fresh salads. Morris dancers were performing on the night we went. Staff are very friendly.
Very nice pub. beautiful garden - more comfy than most, peaceful, quiet. Great for meeting friends and enjoying a lovely evening. Food is top notch - fabulous burger, exceptionally well cooked. (Most places overcook because, apparently, "health and safety" means you have to turn a good burger to pure carbon - but not here!Couple of gripes: its overpriced - some things vastly so - and a couple of the bar staff are a but curt and surly.
Excellent pub meal in a nice old building. Tall people beware - low ceilings! Staff were attentive and provided great service.
Good quality food set in a traditional pub. Staff were friendly and accommodating fitting us in earlier than we had booked.
I have to say that I enjoyed every part of going here. The food was excellent, a good selection of beer and wine, the service was fast and pleasant. If had to say a couple of negative things it would be that to get to the toilet you have to go outside due to it being an old building, and that you are paying a more for the quality of food. But both of these things are worth it in my opinion.
The crown is s classic English pub that ticks all the boxes of a traditional pub experience. It’s got a real traditional atmosphere including old Low hanging oak beams for tall people to knock their head on, a fireplace to warm you up (only in winter), old memorabilia glorifying days gone by and a warm welcome that greets you. The food is good quality, a little on the pricey side, but it’s generally worth it as it’s great quality. We had a simple lunch of potato and vegetable soup, and an open faced sandwich, topped with good quality meat and a nice homemade radish. The beer selection has the usual more well known brands as well as a few local ales and some brewed especially for the pub. Overall we had a great lunch and it’s an experience that I always enjoy stopping in for whenever I’m in the neighbourhood.
Went for dinner just earlier this evening; good experience all round. Service was great, food was ok, and I liked the decor of the traditional English pub. I had a problem with the very low ceilings so had to crouch my way around. Also fish and chips for near enough £20 I felt it under delivered. Plenty of parking at the rear for patrons. I would return and bring friends.
