Stylish decor makes this an up-to-date environment for quizzes, real ales and classic pub food.
Burgers were greatGe environment was cool too
My friend brought me here (I’m not from this areaand it was the perfect spot after work drinks!
Great pub, great atmosphere, lovely staff and Stephen’s a babe!
A proper local. Always welcoming, relaxed and unpretentious, and a great vibe at weekends. Recommended.
Love the Monday pub quiz and the staff are great too!
Sunday roasts generous and tasty. Chicken too big though.Winner winner chicken dinner is a misnomer. It is not. Chicken inconsistent, some very very dry and other bits ok-just. Coating far too thick and overspiced. Floury. Completely imbalanced meal. Nothing goes together on the plate Lumpy "mash". Generous hallumi portions. Definitely a mixed bag as far as the quality of the food.
Great pub but the pub quiz starts at 1930 not 20:00.
Had an awesome night here at the great quiz night. Lovely staff, great atmosphere, would definitely recommend!
A fabulous experience at this wonderful homely pub. Would highly recommend!
Really nice pints served by really nice people such as Allen!
Fresh Guinness from Alan. Top bloke.
Staff excellent.beer ok, toilets need renovation.
Excellent pub, very dog friendly
Whenever I’m in London it’s always a joy to come and have a few drinks with friends at this wonderful establishment
Great place for a beer and to watch the football!
Friendly barstaff, good selection of beers, and shows sports. Solid pub.
Awesome bar staff and atmosphere. Food is to die for, would certainly recommend.
Great pub, friendly atmosphere, nice selection of guest beers and play sky sports.
My favorite pub in South London. Very relaxed, good food and always friendly staff
Great service, great selection of beer, great range of burgers. Classic spot with those great vibes. It’s pretty great.
Nice local pub - yummy burgers, good beers, shows the sports, good atmosphere. No fuss, would recommend!

Our family went to the pub and the staff was very polite and friendly. All of us oreded the food and drinks .There is a good selction of drinks and food on the menu.
Great food, atmosphere and drinks selection. The staff are really friendly and welcoming, have taken friends there and they to also enjoyed their time.
I was hoping for a nice refreshing drink last night and ordered a pint of beer and a glass of Picpoul....it is only when my wife had a sip of the wine when she told me the wine was warm....i went back to the bar, thinking this was a mistake...clearly not!!The waitress knew the wine was warm...as "the fridges are not working"...No warning when i ordered, she poured the wine hoping for the best. If i had known, surely i would have chosen a different drink....when i asked why she did not inform me, she repkied ....there is no legal requirement to serve cold wine!!! I just could not believe what i just heard....she did not offer to replace the wine with a different drink...such as Pimms or G&T, but instead offered some ice cubes....no spoons....i had to ask for one. In the end my wife had a very diluted Picpoul at £7.25 a glass. Not even a word of apology and to conclude a staff member decided to have her cigarette break just next to us, seating at a client table....not a pleasant experience....
Great pub, the food was delicious and the beer selection is incredible. Will definitely be back again
The picture of the “mojito” speaks for itself ..£8.95 for a mojito out of a can, which also tasted exactly the same as the overly sweet lidl canned mojito, was not even poured to the top, with dead withered rotting mint. I would have been embarrassed to serve this to a customer, the mint looked as unbothered as (someof the staff. As it wasn’t filled to a reasonable level in the glass, it looks like they used one can to fill 2 glasses and they charged £17.90 for that. Some (not allof the staff looked like they were really sad being there, not sure if they just should not be in a customer facing role or whether higher management are making them hate their job. This kind of environment sets the tone for the pub. I thought that maybe the freshly made drinks would be better, nope! The gin tasted like it had been open for years. I have the same gin at home and it tasted nothing like it. When gin has been opened for a while it loses its flavour including colour in some cases, any one working at a bar should know that. The prices they charged were extortionate considering the poor quality of the drinks. No one I was with had a good drink, and we all left after the second one as we all had enough. I am frustrated I spent the amount I did on drinks that were not even proper drinks. Hands down the worst pub I have ever been to. Plenty of better choices in herne hill!!!Update: from this review, I have received the following response from general management. This is a completely inaccurate and absurd accusation. The gaslighting is unbelievable and I can only assume this gaslighting behaviour from management is the reason the staff looked as miserable as they did when I visited. I did not ask once for free drinks, nor have I asked on multiple occasions. I also didn’t ask for a refund we just walked out and left. Who in their right mind would ask for free drinks at a pub? How would that conversation even go? “Hi can I have a free drink please” of course not! I also did not ask for a discount of any kind. I ordered on the app/QR code and had no interaction with the bar staff while ordering, and definitely did not ask for free drinks. General management have the audacity to say that this does not accurately reflect what happened when they had made up everything in their comment. Prices at your venue would be reasonable yes if you didn’t give me a mojito out of a can with dead mint or if you didn’t give me old gin that had lost its colour and flavour.Again, I do not know who you are talking about in your response as you may be thinking of someone else as this seems like a regular occurrence if you’re mixing me up with another customer. But the staff didn’t even acknowledge me I ordered via QR code as they were so miserable I did not even want to ask for a replacement or a refund, but in hindsight I should have. Instead I ordered gin and a mixer thinking it would be better as it wouldn’t be out of a can and it wasn’t. We left at this stage as nothing would have improved. On a lighter note, I have attended this venue again with my friends as I live local and had a beer and a much better experience there and better customer service. So this incident was clearly a one off but it did happen as I had described. Now that I’ve seen the disgusting false accusations from management this will not be my spot of choice moving forwards.
Love this place. We live with about 5 good pubs in easy walking distance and this is still hands down our local and where we choose to bring friends who visit. Always get a great reception and its nice to have a pub where the staff turnover is low so you can get to know some friendly faces. Can see a few very harsh reviews re staff but in the year weve lived here they have always been amazing. Good range and variety of beers and the food is cracking, especially for veggies. Also a proper London boozer interior and nice courtyard out back. Would give more stars if I could.
Decent Herne Hill pub. Three cask beers on handpump. Small garden at the rear and lots of standing outside at the front. Very busy when we visited on the Jubilee weekend.
The drinks were good, the atmosphere was nice too :shout out to ado he was a rlly gd server
My first time coming to a bar and it was a time to remember, I was entertained by a worker named ado who served the best drink I’ve ever had while being extremely funny and sociable, if you were to ever visit make sure to say hi to him, you won’t regret it
First time visiting this pub, made to feel very welcome, only had drinks this time but will be back to try the food. A lovely find.
There are popular burger restaurants in Bristol wishing they could nail a chicken burger like this place. Bali+++
Great bar staff , very helpful and friendly. Delicious vegan cauliflower wings ! And a relaxing garden area for a pint in the sun!
Elaine was very lovely and welcoming. I don’t usually enjoy my nights out because I don’t go out, but she had really mad sure everything was running smoothly and efficiently. Overall the service and staff were great! I’m very happy and I recommend! Many thanks again!
Good pub right opposite herne hill station. It has a good selection of drinks and shows the sports. Can be fairly quiet during the beginning of the week but gets busier towards the weekends.
The Commercial is a very intriguing pub at the present time. Its a good old fashioned boozer in a great location and the main chap managing the bar seems a good guy. Often a good local crowd and a fun atmosphere.Unfortunately though many peoples interpretation of a good pub relies on good beer and the regular welcome you receive. On the first point, the beer of late has been flat as a pancake. God knows what is happening there but its been the same for a while. There seems to be no point in mentioning it as the giggly girls and gangly lads behind the bar (who seem to think theyre some form of comedy duoseem to think its all one big joke. And speaking of some of the younger staff, their general surly behaviour and attitude is simply not up to scratch to be public facing. It seems when the main manager isnt around, some of staff seem to end up spending a suspicious amount of time hanging around the disabled toilet (often going in together in 2s and 3sand acting somewhat like they are under the influence of something a bit more hard hitting than half a Doom Bar. I dont care what these individuals do or dont do in the private lives but its not particularly professional ( particularly going in to the toilets with a large knife which Im guessing isnt used as a bog brush)Time for a clear out of some of the staff
Worst staff ever experienced.Booked a table for a birthday and rugby. Called up to reconfirm as the person we initially spoke to didnt sound very interested and was very short, which didnt sound right. When we called to double check the booking they said nothing is booked and were extremely rude on the phone saying all fully booked. Unbelieveably poor staff.
I I must say that since frequenting hernhill because I am from Herne Hill the commercial has now become my new local and as such I must commend the lovely bar staff. Specifically Evie served with great efficiency and excellent character!
I’ve attended this pub for the last two years and never had any issue. However I attended early evening today and had a terrible experience. I ordered a pint of Doom Bar (which I drink regularlyand immediately on sitting at my table and taking a first sip realised it tasted odd. My partner also tried it and agreed it tasted odd. We had had two sips. I am always hesitant to return a drink and to be honest never do it, but took this back to the bar. I spoke with the young guy working and informed him that the beer tasted odd. He tried the tap and said it was the end of the barrel. He then tried a sip of my pint (pouring it into a glassand said it did taste off. He checked whether the wrong pint had been pulled. It hadn’t. I queried whether I could get a replacement given he agreed that it tasted odd! He said not without the manager approving I asked for the manager to be told he was on a call upstairs. The guy at the bar, after I had sat down, then proceeded to call over an older man at the pub (I’m a young womanand asked him to try it because obviously my opinion confirmed by the barman himself was not adequate. This was a very odd, patronising experience and not what I would normally expect of a decent pub. I called the pub back later and spoke with the manager. I could hear him speaking to the guy who was on the bar. He said the bar man denied saying it tasted odd. I asked him to ask the girls who were working and stood next to him, he purported to do this but immediately said they said it was fine. And then proceeded to hang up the phone on me. Honestly such a disappointing experience from what I’ve always thought was a nice pub. Not the cheapest either! Will not be going back, try the others in herne hill instead.
A smile from the staff would help. Also I dont want to see them throwing paper cloths/wipes into an open bin that has over-flowed onto the pub floor. Disgusting. But, what a great looking (inside and outpub. Seating wonderfull. Lets see what happens next time..
Good beers, good atmosphere, excellent range of food for non-meat eaters. Suffers from the regular Herne Hill "Attack of the Prams" on a Sunday though - loses it a star Im afraid, same for the other Herne Hill pubs.
Brilliant team, especially the pink haired girl called Linda I think. I have a physical disability and learning difficulties and this girl made me feel special and welcome, this being at a busy time with the rugby. My partner is also disabled and now also wants to visit because the service and reception is so good. A joyous visit with super staff, that Linda is a credit to her peers and managers. Well done...we shall return
Despite being fully booked, the staff found a table for us (3 adults and 2 children). The food was really nice, we got the Sunday roasts and fish and chips - they were delicious and came in large portions. We’ll definitely be back and book a table at the back, where the it’s a bit brighter!
Bad service spoils otherwise quite nice pub. We ordered over the app and after waiting for our drinks for half an hour, chased them when our food arrived. The waitress said she’d bring them out and then just went and served bar instead. Eventually queued at the bar as the only way of getting them, and had to argue then with the barman who claimed they’d already been brought out. Finally managed to get something, and had to settle for a half pint of coke after paying for a pint, just tired of battling and relieved to get anything at all at this point. TLDR: OK pub, don’t use the app.
Nice pub with TVs for sport. The manager was friendly and put the F1 on for us in one of the rooms. The food is burgers and fried chicken along with some regular pub meals. The food was actually very nice. The service was a little complicated as I couldnt use the app they have and the the bar staff struggled a bit with order. Otherwise a good experience.
Poor bar assistance. I paid basically 10 pounds for a cocktail served in a plastic glass. Also i clearly asked for a gluten free beer and received a normal one. I think is not nice at all to made mistakes with customers health. No recommend at all.
Been going in here for a while and I think its a beacon of hope and normality in the overpriced area it inhabits. The staff are always lovely and helpful, they do a great coffee that is affordable and puts a lit of the locals poncey places to shame!! The building is beautiful and old with original wooden panel walls and ceiling ... They also have a good selection of beers and good food!! I really dont know why anyone would leave a bad review I say its more likely a "them problem" not an issue with the pub. What do they expect a red carpet and free Chardonnay?? Its a bloody lundun pub m8. A lovely one at that and more like the old days when a place had a bit of personality and u didnt need a bank loan to cover your bill. Will be a fan for life! Its right opposite the station, great location!! Great building! Nice staff!!
Great trendy local pub. Nice atmosphere and excellent selection of drinks. Friendly staff and good music.
