Shoreditch Town Hall, 380 Old St, Hackney, London EC1V 9LT, Puri
Cutting-edge restaurant and bar for innovative British menu using often-overlooked ingredients.
Three people for lunch mid September we enjoyed the short tasting menu. Have no doubt that we did enjoy the short tasting menu. This was my fifth visit to Clove Club, and the first for three years because of the impediments to travel. I had always loved the food and had always thought that its short lunch menu was incredibly good value. I still love the food but, sadly, the value proposition I think is less good value.I thought I had booked for a four course GBP65 lunch. Im not sure where I got that idea, although I can find solid evidence on the internet that it is not a fabricated memory. That seems to have now changed. The lowest price offering is a five course GBP155 lunch. The dishes were all great. The service was delightful. The room and open kitchen, calm, warm, friendly and precisely as I recall.Things change. Time for me to move on. The next time I am fortunate enough to be visiting London I shall experiment. No hard feelings.
Great atmosphere and wines. Food was not bad given the standard, but fell short of our expectations. There was nothing exceptional that makes us want to go back or to recommend to others.
A very unique experience...food was delicious, but my husband was still hungry after, but perfect for me. Room lovely, service was top notch. 2 caveats: the price was eye watering, and if you want to catch up over dinner this is NOT the place as staff are constantly bringing you dishes (not a complaint but true observation), Not good value for money but the experience made it worth doing. With the wine pairing and full tasting menu I think it was approximately £500 pp.
We visited on 6 August for my brothers birthday. I wanted to like it. For £400 per head, I really wanted to like it. And I tried to like it. But it was too hectic, too cramped, and the food was just a bit hit and miss. My wifes vegetarian main looked like one of those cheap bags of frozen mixed veg you get (sweetcorn, peas, carrotswith a fried egg and (of course!grated truffle on top (almost a parody). Another course (served in Augustfeatured Jerusalem artichoke, which Ive always understood to be a winter veg, and more truffle... The apricot dessert was a bowl of sweet, textureless gloop with crunchy bits on top. The upselling annoyed me too - two courses attracted a £25 supplement each (paid one and regretted it - potato dessert, with yet more truffle). The mixed wine and tea pairing was good in concept, but the teas werent flavoursome enough for the food and the portions were very small. To be fair, the sardine, bass, lobster and lamb were all very nice, but I was glad I didnt have the vegetarian menu. The whole thing exceeded four hours, whereas the booking specified 3 hours. Would have been fine, except wed driven down and Tower Hamlets have a max parking stay of 4 hours. So I missed the petits fours (not on the menuand my brothers birthday cake. Explained the parking situation to the host in the bar area, but she essentially shrugged - not her problem, I guess. All in all, very underwhelming and unsatisfactory, and enough to put me off trying more Michelin star restaurants, given the poor value-for-money at Clove Club.
A great gastronomic experience overall. Everything is worth tasting. I highly recommend paying extra for the optional menu items as they were definitely worth it. The drinks were fantastic. The service is on point, and it seems the entire team serves every table together, so you have different people bringing different things. My only criticism is the fact that its 10 courses over 3.5 hours. It felt a bit long, especially given the wait time between some courses. I think a 5 course menu (and combining the initial 3 finger foods into 1 coursewould make more sense.
Its an old saying that its cost-effective. The price went up a lot. Even after uploading, there was no e-mail or phone call to the customer who made the reservation. Although it is said to be a casual concept, the service quality of the employees was very poor to receive Michelin two-star. There smile on their face, but there are pretentious. The food was also not good for the price.
This is one of my fav restaurant in London and it was my third time visit to the place. Food was as creative and tasty as always and service was also top notch. I would say it was a bit too creative on this time around but I think it’s good to be experimental. This is one of the fine dining restaurant you ca. go back multiple times and can enjoy each time perfectly. I like the woody cozy ambience and personally perfect for a date.
Memorable, creative, truly stunning.Confident and welcoming team, young and attentive, superb cuisine, beautiful dishes, flavourful. Scallops with truffle, chicken on pine, tartare of aged beef, more chicken perfectly prepared… honestly, it was a delight. Bravo.
Terrible terrible restaurant. Zero customer service. There is a transportation strike throughout London which is not something you would be aware of if you didnt live here. They held us hostage to our reservation and charged us over $300 although we did call them 30 hours in advance.Any respectable institution would have been understanding of these special circumstances. This just shows their desperation to make 2 bucks rather than building a satisfied and long-standing clientele.Skip.
Please ignore the 5 star reviews, these people know nothing. If you’re a real foodie you’ll be hugely disappointed by The Clove Club. Low on flavour, unimaginative and not at all satisfying. I’m sorry I don’t mean to be cruel but the dishes just don’t land. Texture is a real problem. A lot of cold slimy elements combined together often resulted in some pretty hard to eat dishes. Of course, you have to bear in mind that it’s also very expensive (£150 for a tasting menu). Ugly cheap decor, poorly coordinated, bit dirty, grey walls and run down toilets. All in all, I’m staggered it has any reputation at all and felt sorely short changed. The tiny free birthday cake they brought me was the best tasting dish and also the only decent value on show for the entire meal.
Food was outstanding. So well balanced, exceeded my expectations. Service was possibly the best ever experienced. Thanks Brian and Sandy and the rest of the team. Every team member seemed to touch our table. Sam, the wine pairings were perfect. I had NA drinks. Each drink was delicious and different. We are on holiday, visiting from Atlanta. We made the reservation so long ago. Cheers to your entire team.
It’s okay. The ambiance and decor were great. Service and food…not so much. Lacked the flavor profile. My wife’s vegetarian meal wasn’t great either and we both left feeling extremely underwhelmed. It’s a classy joint in a nice neighborhood but if your focus for a restaurant is food, I’d look someplace else.
Excellent short tasting menu, with exceptional fish courses. The personalized approach by the sommelier, as well as the kind service overall, made it a great night out. Do not hesitate to have dinner here!
My favourite of the places I tried while I was in London. It felt tailored to me personally. I was there for both the food and the ceremony, which they played up to great effect. Had I come for a quick lunch, Im sure they would have been just as attentive.Everything was well paced, delicious, and playful. Its a place that winks at you as you leave.
This place is something special. The amount of enjoyment one gets from eating here. Obviously its only for a special occasion but if you get the chance then take the opportunity to try this experience.
We did the cocktail tasting menu experience. One of my favorite dining moments ever. Was so fun, delicious- special in a hundred ways. Love.
Fantastic tasting menu with a great variety of amazing and really well balanced dishes. Great cocktails too. Loved the dining room facing the kitchen, couldn’t believe how calm all the chefs were! The waiting staff were really knowledgeable and friendly too, appreciate them suggesting wines that we might like that weren’t even on the menu.
Not that Michelin ratings are the tell-all but this place deserves another star. It’s better than a lot of the other top places we’ve been to in London. If you’re looking for a really nice occasion place this is the one. Unique flavours but also really satisfying, a rare balance to strike.
We very much enjoyed our dinner at The Clove Club. Our table enjoyed three vegetarian tasting menus and one regular tasting menu which was thoughtfully presented with a seafood allergy in mind. The dishes were all delightful, cant fault anything. Weve been to other similar restaurants where the food presentation may have had slightly more "wow" factor but the flavor of everything we had was top notch. Some of our party had the mixed wine and tea pairing while others had only the tea pairing and the teas were absolutely amazing although I do think the price of the beverage pairings was a wee bit high. The staff all made us feel very welcome, especially Nicholas and Michael, but everyone we came in contact with just lovely. The room and ambience felt intimate and comfortable. Based on other reviews I was prepared for it to feel a bit stark with no table cloths and a minimalist vibe but there actually were tablecloths and the color palette of the room was very warm and inviting. Most expensive meal Ive had but the experience was well worth it and I dont regret a penny of it.
It’s fine. It was a really nice dinner but for the price, you have to be critical. There wasn’t enough food overall and I don’t think it’s worth the price. That being said the staff were really lovely and friendly.
I was able to try this place with code app, I m a cook and I really enjoy the food there, everything was just beautiful tasty and perfectly balance. I love the fact that they using a lot of British products. The Italian waiter/manager that look after my table was very nice and take care of every detail. Definitely is a experience that is worth the money. Cant wait to come back.. thanks you...
Small restaurant with open kitchen at one end.Fish tasting menu super nice. Staff very professional and engaging. Great for special occasions.
First time to the Clove Club in February. The food, staff and the environment worked in harmony! I have since been to another Michelin restaurant in London, and the Clove Club for overall experience comes up trumps. The Sommelier who served us (cant remember his namewas personable and passionate about the wine which complimented a great pairing with the food.
The food was really special and the flavours divine - there was one dish that was not enjoyable (think the asparagus - in an oddly flavoured foamy sauce). The price was eye watering, but I don’t regret it. The wine list was superb.
Fabulous dinner here. Watched as the chefs banged out one amazing course after the other. Brace yourself when the bill arrives, but its worth every penny, my high expectations were exceeded. One other observation: there was quite a lot of fish / seafood which was fine for me but not for everyone
Came for a lunch on Saturday. The ambiance is quite cozy. There is a bit of natural light from outside. Quite spacious though some tables are relatively close to each other. They only serves one tasting menu with a short version available. We ordered the regular one. After ordering, the amuse bouche was served, it was tasty. I actually like the fried chicken given as snack more than the chicken in the main course. The rest of the dishes were served gradually in timely manner, not too rush, not too slow, and each dishes were nicely presented and explained by the staff members. Portion is quite small but after finishing all the courses, you would be full. I like most of the dishes. My favourite is probably the raw Orkney scallop. The only dish that I am not a fan of is the crispy pork jowl. Overall I enjoyed the experience. No doubt it’s Michelin star as well as one of the world’s best 50 restaurants. They deserve the awards.
I would give this place 10 stars if possible. Each dish placed in front of us was better than the last, the staff were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and also understanding when we were running late due to transport issues. The inspiration behind each meal is so imaginative and each bite of our meal was packaged with new and exciting flavours. The menu is incredibly accessible despite the two Michelin stars. Nothing felt too challenging to eat, even the meal item that had snails!
I was contemplating visiting the Clove club for a very long time, when the second star came along I thought it was the perfect opportunity. The space is great, open and inviting however the main dining room offers one of most intimate dining experiences possible. The centerpiece of the restaurant is undoubtedly the kitchen and if your are in luck, like I was, to have the front row table then it becomes a show on its own.The food was great. We opted for the full tasting and there was a concept, a theme and a perfect execution for every ingredient that made it to plating. Some of the highlights were the snail, the scallop, the sardine and the pork. The only point were I thought that a bit more thought should have been given, was the desert. Although beautifully executed I felt that it lacked the wow factor and was a bit too simply of a way to close such a greatly executed service. Oh well maybe next time.Winelist was very extensive with a plethora of offerings from old world and new / newer world wines. We were biased so opted for a great alrounder, a Greek Mosxofilero.Service was excellent and on par with what one might expect, however it was a bit more personal/casual rather than stiff and robotic. Annette was great in presenting us with our dishes and did an excellent job throughout.Very positive experience and will definitely try to visit again.
Had a truly lovely birthday lunch at the Clove Club. The food, service, and ambience were all amazing. I am definitely returning!
Saw clove club on the 50 best restaurant list, so really had high expectation. Overall it was good but falls a bit short of my expectation. While every thing is good, nothing is mind blowingly great that I must have again. I had the tasting menu and my favorites are probably the fish dish , the foie gras, and I thought the raw scallop was interesting. Not sure if it was only today but the food came out quite slow for me today. So it’s a 3.5-4 stars for me especially considering the price
This has got to be the best fancy restaurant in the UK. The flavours are familiar yet presented in a very new way. The service is impeccable. And the main dining hall feels like dining at a very well run home. You can see the chefs prepare fresh high quality food in front of you. The wine list is extensive. The Clove Club is worth every penny and the wait to get a table. Its a special experience but also shows the way to how top end restaurants should be run.
Amazing tasting menu! They catered for my dietary requirements perfectly! All photos are my gluten / dairy / egg free options! They even had warm gluten free bread that is the best I’ve ever had! ✨
Plenty of unusual but pleasant new flavours: raw scallops and vegetable broth dishes from the full tasting menu were my favourites (fried chicken and taco were unnecessary to be honest — sorry chef!). And a really good selection of wines by the glass: from South African to Polish.Dining room is overlooking the kitchen and doesnt feel too formal. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Just a 10-minute walk from Shoreditch High Street.
Had the full tasting menu with the wine pairing - every bite was a flavour bomb. So well done. One of the best, if not the best tasting menu I’ve had in London. Was for a celebration and they did not disappoint. Service was attentive but not overly so. Relaxed ambience for a Michelin starred restaurant, not stuffy.
Excellent experience in the restaurant and the meal. Require advance booking (I booked a month aheadto get a table. There is a comprehensive wine list, and we ordered the degustation menu. The starters and desserts after were delicious. Worth a return visit !
Wonderful dinner, sat close to the open kitchen with 10+ staffs walking around the table felt abit hectic.
The service and food were excellent. My favorite was scallops with truffle. Will need to go back for that. The server gave us an awesome thanksgiving greeting plate.
Excellent. Had the smaller tasting menu for lunch as was a bit pushed for time but still spent more than two hours there! The food was delicious. Nicely seasoned and perfectly presented. Excellent service. Highly recommended!
The Clove Club is not only a 1-Star Michelin but also one of the best 50 restaurants which has the best ranking among all candidates in London. Therefore, we made a reservation via their website before our trip to London.Chef Issac Mchale was trained at Noma and EMP, which are two of the most famous fine dining restaurants in the world. He focuses on the re-interpretation of modern British with simple & natural flavors by using fresh local ingredients. The decor is classy and elegant with arsty design & plants. The open kitchen is amazing and it was enjoyable to watch the chefs prepare & cook.We had their Lunch Menu (£65for myself and Short Tasting Menu (£95for my husband. Its was a decent and solid experience with little surprise, especially their entrees, which were delicious & satisfying but that was it.Our favorites and what impressed us the most were their delicate & beautiful small bites from the beginning ‘til the end. The variety & creativity of these finger food was one of the best we have ever had in our Michelin journey in London. There was still room for improvement for their service in our opinions. The waiters were really friendly and helpful but we could feel they were not familiar with what they served and not detailed with diet restrictions.
Recently (2021awarded #32 best restaurant in the world.Food is great and very fish heavy. Interesting and unique.Service is fine. Some staff need to learn to project when describing the plate. We were sitting in the same room as the chefs, which is cool. Unfortunately, at the end of the night they clean the grill which sends up a thick smell throughout the place. They have a wine pairing, a non-alcoholic drink pairing, and a mixed pairing which switches between the two.£300-500/person
Great restaurant. Location and ambiance are calm yet tasteful and the service was impeccable. The tasting menu was full of locally sourced in season food - with lots of incredible and inventive fish dishes. Good wine menu also. Left feeling comfortably full.
We had a fantastic lunch at The Clove Club today. We went for the full tasting menu and were perfectly full by the end - excellently judged! The menu was interesting and well executed. The service was attentive and friendly. What a great way to spend a few hours, all in an historic building! David Miles
The worst Michael star place I have even been at (had privilege visiting over 100 places). They broke every single protocol of service there... First we started our night with glass of Champaign (which was recommendedhowever they "forgot" to tell that there is 2 other glasses in tasting menu. Nobody wants 3 glasses of Champaign during your course. Speaking of drinks we saw sommelier pouring 2nd wine bottle into decanter which already had 30% of wine from other bottle - you never, ever mix bottles... Continuing the topic of drinks - pouring wine glass of 30ml and saying (literal qoute- this is how much restaurant can afford is beyond insulting (either dont offer this wine or charge accordingly - its not that £145 is cheap end either way). Regarding tasting menu it was very lazy approach from the chef - serving water (ice creamthree times (out of 9is really interesting "interpretation" to say at least. Discussing general etiquette - dont bring me bill straight after petite four (without me asking- what if I want another glass of wine? And never ever, ever come to the table when one of the parties are in the restroom and ask female if she is ready to settle the bill... How person supposed to feel if other party is paying?
Food is fantastic! I love decor of the place and that you can see how your food is prepared. This creates warm atmosphere. Service is just excellent and chef was very friendly! I also got my little birthday treat. Highly recommended and we definitely will be back !! I wish I knew how to prepare the duck like at Clove Club! Outstanding experience!
The food tasted great and we had excellent service (despite a few small issues, like finding a bamboo skewer in the lobster when it became a splinter in my mouth). The staff was very apologetic and offered an apertivo, which was thoughtful.Giving only 4 stars because I could have done with at least 1 or 2 additional courses, and Ive been to similar concepts that were less expensive. Still lovely time if youre looking to splurge.
8 course tasting menu and wine pairing for 2. Relaxed, informal and super fun. The serving staff were really nice, knowledgeable and engaging. The food was incredible and if you can make it to the last course, its a treat! Around 3 hours which was perfect. The highlight was the sommelier who knew his stuff and had a great sense of humour. Michelin star tasting menu restaurants do not have to be stuffy, this was modern, fresh and comfortable. Thank you to all. Shout out to the guy from Toulouse and the Asian lady with the US accent.
Lovely meal and excellent service. I loved all of the dishes leading up to the main course on the tasting menu but found the aubergine main to be a bit underwhelming unfortunately. We split the wine pairing as it was super expensive and still managed to leave smashed.Looks like it will be our last meal out for a while so we were glad to do it in style.
The Clove club is among my best food experiences in London. The service was excellent - Im pescaterian and the staff were very accommodating with that without compromising the food choices for my partner who is a meat eater. The food was of the highest quality, the fish was fresh especially their snapper! The wine selection perfectly matched each course of the meal and the staff were very knowledgeable about the wineries as well as the wine varieties. The atmosphere is very relaxed and unpretentious. I would highly recommend The Clove Club to anyone who is looking for a unique food experience!
Most inspiring dinner I had in London. The restaurant setting is casual and chic, and service attentive. The dishes played on textures and layers, which made every bite fun. The taste and choice of ingredients were bold and ingenious. We thoroughly enjoyed the wine pairing - the choice of wine and liquor was creative and they really enhanced the flavours of the food (probably the best wine pairing I have had so far). The bill is big but worth every penny IMO! The individual portions may seem small, but you will feel satiated by the end of the meal. Cannot wait to return for round two.
Food was fantastic and creative. Ingredients were obviously the best and the execution was beautiful, except for one dish that was under-seasoned we thought. The venue is beautiful and the open kitchen is especially fun to watch.Service is good but does not match the high standard of their food - we had incidents where our waiter forgot our order of additional bread (he offered first!), and it took them forever to bring the card machine for the bill. When it was time for coffee/tea, we were told that their espresso machine is out of order so instead we got a whole pot of filtered coffee which was said to be great but not really as it turns out, and we weren’t even asked if sugar or milk were needed.
