Exposed beam and stripped floor dining room with fireplaces, for gourmet Modern British cuisine.
The food/ plates are perfectly balanced, great selection of wine. I recommend the dark chocolate mousse dessert, the popping candy takes you back to childhood 😊
Love this place steeped in so many centuries of history. Food is locally sourced and excellent, staff are knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating to modifying the meal if you dont like all the ingredients as given on the menu.
Tip top if youre after a treat of a meal in a beautiful building - the oldest building in Winchester, dont you know! Totally recommend.
Had a great Sunday lunch here whilst on holiday for the week. Great service and food. Ideal place for a special occasion. Lovely building and attracts at lot of attention as people drive by!
Came here for a special occasion and it definitely did not disappoint. Food was so delicious and portions quite generous as well. The building itself is a living antique and worth the dining experience.
The building is historic and layout perfect for a quite meal. Service excellent and food fantastic. Pricey but worth it for special occasion or a treat.
Absolutely amazing venue with the best roast dinner ever! Craig, our waiter, was extremely attentive, which made the experience all the more better! xx 😋❤👌
My family and I visited for the first time last month, and we still talk about how incredible the food was! From the second we walked in, we were welcomed in a friendly and professional way. A theme that remained throughout the whole evening.I could write an endless essay about how tantalising every dish was, but I simply recommend you go and try it yourself. You will not be disappointed! It’s not the cheapest place in the world, but you pay for the quality. It’s perfect for a special date or celebration.
Didnt book but fortunately found a table for a Sunday lunch to our delight. We chose a 2 course meal which was reasonably priced. A starter and a main. We both had the soup of the day, which was lovely but nothing spectacular. The main took over half an hour at least to be served and considering we were told we need to give the table back at a certain time, it was a bit concerning. The food arrived somewhat lukewarm but it was delicious. Just a bit let down by the timings but the decor and the restaurant itself was beautiful.
For the first time English food tastes good. Few dishes werent 100% purely English but also good.Gnocchi not very good, it was more like mash.Service a bit slow.
Visited here on a weekend for a special occasion. The service was friendly yet relaxed, food was outstanding and the wine was perfect. So often places with this quality of food can be quite pretentious, however The Chesil manages to strike the right balance with food, service and atmosphere. The team are knowledgeable and clearly care about thier job and the restaurant. I would recommend this place to anyone!Oh and try the pigeon, its divine!!
A must see in Winch. Clean home cooked English cuisine with a historic atmosphere. Great wine list and brilliant staff.
An unforgettable Sunday roast in a truly incredible space. I arrived looking decidedly shabby after a long walk in the countryside, but I could not have been greeted or treated more graciously. I am particularly grateful for the kitchens care and attention in providing so many delicious gluten-free options for this Coeliac diner. A must-visit in Winchester.
Excellent food, very attentive staff and very nice decor. Is a bit pricey though.
Very clever cooking, a well-crafted menu and expertly executed. Staff were extremely attentive and made excellent recommendations. We sat outside in a beautiful courtyard and they were able to accommodate my elderly relatives who are wheelchair bound. Will definitely be visiting again next time Im in the area.
Disappointing Sunday roast. Surprised to see that the vegetables came plated up. Beef very gamey in flavour. Pork very fatty, no crackling. Cauliflower was not very fresh, tho sauce was tasty. Wine not poured at the table, which considering the price, I feel should have been.I’m afraid I would not recommend based on this experience.
We went for Sunday roast in this beautiful old building. The food was very good and the portions were generous. Prices were a bit high, but represented good value for money.
A wonderful birthday lunch in this historic and charming of buildings. Truly great food and wine and the most welcoming of staff. Love it here
It is the best and the oldest restaurant in whole Winchester. It is modern food place but atmosphere is nice as food as well. Please reserve in advance!!!
Excellent meal with ambiance included! We went last night as a treat for my partners birthday and it did not disappoint! We started with delectable scallops, followed by lobster and prawn pasta dish for him and lamb loin for me. My dessert was a delicious lemon meringue cream dish and his was a chocolate tart with a glass of dessert wine. We had an excellent bottle of white wine with the meal. I cannot emphasise too much how pleasant an evening it was with delicious food, great service and in an independently owned restaurant. Highly recommended!
The service was excellent. The food was pretty good but didnt wow us. However the temperature was so high it was very uncomfortable and we were sat next to a table who were very loud.
Very good food and friendly, helpful and efficient service at this restaurant in Central Winchester. Easy to park in Chesil Road car park. We ate from the lunchtime set menu in the garden protected from traffic by walls and hedges and from possible rain by supersize umbrellas. Excellent experience all round.
Had Sunday lunch here and it was amazing. Not only was there plenty of food but it was of a fantastic quality and we will certainly be returning. The staff were helpful and attentive and the building is beautiful. Really is a must go if you are in Winchester.
Lovely experience again. We dined in the garden for thr first time. Food was tasty, well sourced and thoughtfully seasonal. Service excellent. Chatty Hungarian waitress was very entertaining and knowledgeable. Its not cheap but you can see what youre in for on the menu. Very recommendable fine dining.
We went to dinner at the Black Rat the night before and paid a similar amount for dinner at both restaurants. Although this is a lovely building the restaurant was lacking a good atmosphere and both the food and service were just OK. For the price this is a one and done restaurant for us.
Visited with friends on a Saturday evening. It’s probably a good 3 or 4 years ago that we were last here, and boy, how it’s changed. It used be a special place to come with great cuisine and service, sadly not so now. The food wasn’t bad, it was just bland and over priced. The desert is particularly worthy of mentioned. We had the 70% dark chocolate tarte. What came out was like some sort of joke. It was a supermarket pastry case, with what looked and tasted like one of those supermarket chocolate mousses I used to buy for my kids when they were younger, dolloped into the case, with some bland popcorn sprinkled over it, a dollop of what should have been salted caramel ice cream, but was just bland and plonked on top.For this alone they charged £11. I could go on about the £26 lamb main course but hopefully you get the picture. This place is trading on its past. Seriously folks, give this place a miss. There are much better actual fine dining places in Winchester.
Myself and boyfriend had 3 course lunch set menu. The food was delicious and the right portion size. We are planning to go again later in the year.
Real great old building(1450). When you walk in you are in the past. Nice and cosy inside. Food was good but not quite i aspectet. Friendly staff.
We went here for a special birthday Sunday lunch. 11 of us were given the private dining room which is beautiful. Table laid to perfection, staff welcoming. Service throughout was very good. The food was up to the usual high standard with generous portions. At no point did we feel we were rushed, but we were made to feel special. The three course deal is excellent value, be aware that drinks arent cheap. Overall a super experience, shame youre only 70 once!!
Food was excellent, but it is a shame that the warmest thing on this plate was the black pudding. Both the pork loin and mash could be a lot warmer.
This restaurant brings enlightenment to the British food. Really worth trying and revisiting.
This is a fancy restaurant! They have a limited option for foods, but go try them. Youll love whats on your plate! The staff are so friendly too.
Ate here twice in one trip because it was one of the best meals Ive ever had. Attentive service & charming interior, just a special experience.
We had the most wonderful Valentines Dinner with the best service! Very charming building and although it was busy the atmosphere was great! Nothing was too much trouble! Will definitely be back, thanks for the delicious food!
One of the best meals Ive had in recent memory. Apart from the delicious food and drinks, the historic restaurant makes a lovely setting and the staff are so friendly and attentive. The free dessert bites at the end of the meal were a nice touch for a special occasion, would highly recommend!
This is a wonderful place to have a lovely meal with knowledgeable staff who offer courteous service. The experience was very pleasant from the starters to dessert, you will not be disappointed! They were also very accommodating in offering plant-based alternatives.
Honestly one the best meals weve ever eaten, the food was beautiful, tasted amazing and decent serving size, definitely not left hungry. The wine list was extensive and tasted perfect. Atmosphere was wonderful, such a beautiful restaurant. The service was next to none, friendly and extremely professional. Value for money was amazing, honestly very reasonable price for what it was. Cant wait to go again!
Visited here for the first time yesterday with my wife and 3 month old son. Staff were great throughout the whole experience. The food was exceptional, even the bread basket was bursting with flavour. The building and interior were lovely too, great atmosphere. Cant wait to go back. Highly recommended.
The oldest building in Winchester contains a restaurant serving absolutely divine food. Its not as expensive as you might fear, and the food is so good that the price is definitely worth paying (in our case, £80 per head, with plenty of wine). They have a very reasonable lunch offer, which I will have to try soon. My baked plaice was subtle and restrained, with samphire to spice it up perfectly.
Simply the best food weve eaten in a long time. The service was attentive and quality of food out of this world. I would definitely recommend and when were next in Winchester will return. Book in advance to safe a disappointed evening
We were lucky enough to pay a visit to Chesil Rectory early evening one Saturday. From the moment you walk through the door, you can tell that you are in for a treat, with opulent decorations adorning every surface, and a warm welcome as you enter.Trying to choose what to have on the menu was difficult, as it all sounded delicious! After decisions were made, we eagerly awaited our starters with a bottle of wine! First up was the Carpaccio and Tartar of Local Venison, which we both sampled. It was beautifully soft, and had a very subtle taste, not over-powering which sometimes venison can be, and was delicious. For main, I had Lamb Loin, which was sublime. Everything that was on the plate sung with flavour, and the accompaniments matched the lamb beautifully. My partner had the Roasted Goosnargh Chicken, which I did sneak a sample of. It was incredibly moist and flavoursome, and again, as a dish, it all worked incredibly well together. We also had a side of vegetables which were excellent too.Desserts were again, top class. We sampled the Dark Chocolate & Salted Caramel Chilled Fondant and the Crème Vanille. Both were divine, and a real decadent treat. The Crème Vanille was really fantastic, and came with some delicious Mini Doughnuts! We also treated ourselves to cheeses, which were a great local selection, and even the crackers were homemade, a really nice touch. The service was impeccable. The lady who served very attentive yet not intrusive, and very knowledgeable of the whole menu. Chesil Rectory is very good value for money when you factor in the quality of the food and service, and I would highly recommend trying them out (if you can get a reservation that is!).
The three of us had a great meal here last night…my first time at Chesil Rectory. Food was all delicious…and beautifully presented. The restaurant very cosily decorated, although a little warm inside, given the hot weather we’re having at the moment. Photos are included below and everything actually looked better than my photos manage to capture. The Madeleine petit-fours that came after the mean were a little stale but otherwise the food was excellent. The service was a little slow but they apologized for that without prompting as we paid the bill…they’re having trouble staffing up after the pandemic, as is everyone else of course. I was especially impressed that they would apologize for this, when we certainly wouldn’t have complained….it shows a level of customer caring that you don’t see all that often.Bere Mill Lamb Loin, Glazed Rib, Courgette & Pepper Caponata, House Dried Tomatoes, Crisp Pancetta, Madeira Jus
The food was excellent and the service was just as good. And make sure you leave enough Room for dessert.
Amazing food and experience ❤️❤️❤️the staff were very friendly, every dish was so delicious and I love the decorations of the restaurant 👍💗🆒
Beautiful delicious food and fantastic service. The set menu was well worth the money - 2 courses £17.95 & 3 courses £21.95.The most outstanding dish for me was the grilled plaice, so soft, tender and flavoursome with the perfect touch of hollandaise sauce. Good portion for the price. Will definitely recommend to everyone looking for a nice culinary experience.
Our family had an excellent meal here for a Christmas get together. The setting is completely charming and kept amazingly in its near original condition! The location is great, easy reach of many hotels/shops/bars etc.The staff were really friendly and engaging. Our meal was not rushed, it was a refreshing change not to be carted out the door after an alloted time. All of our meals were tasty, well prepared and also visually appealing. I really enjoyed my starter of cauliflower croquettes, amazing.Would love to return and sample the extended menu as our meal was from the Christmas set menu respectively.
Outstanding experience celebrating a friend’s birthday. The menu is a tough one to pick from due to the outstanding array of flavours on offer. My pigs cheeks main was simply amazing as was the absolutely epic dessert. Highly recommended for a truly perfect dining experience.
Excellent restaurant, quality food and wonderful staff. Went here for my birthday, and the experience was brilliant. The general manager and all other staff were so welcoming and helpful, the tasting menu and wine pairing was completely worth it! For a special occasion or just a great meal, try this place.
An old house , converted to a restaurant, that being said , although it’s a nice atmosphere the floor is tilting and as a result some of the chairs move while you are sitting. The food is on the fusion side, not extraordinary but quite good. If you like your meat well done let them know as , otherwise you will get it red.Staff was so and so , food took quite a while to reach our table and our coffees where forgotten.Towards the expensive side.Wouldn’t return.
Really nice restaurant! Ive been wanting to go here for a few years now and finally found a birthday shaped excuse to go book a table. The medieval building is deceivingly big once you step through the front door and realise that there are a number of little sizeable dining areas, and a bar area upstairs. The food was fantastic and probably the best pork ive ever eaten, combined with the historical setting and the good beer, I will definitely be returning. My only gripe would be that for their price, the puddings are incredibly small. However, by this point of the meal we were already pretty full so this ended up being a nice complement to the meal rather than a negative.
