The Bull's Head Tavern in Grand Rapids
Description
Privilege
I didnt care looking at dead animals on the wall while I was eating. Food was just ok.
MoreI had the fish, perch to be exact. The fries and coleslaw and fish were very excellent. My brother had the soup, he loved it. We would very gladly go back for more. With all of the restraunts in downtown, wed still go back. The building itself was clean, organized, even though busy, they were great. It was my birthday in August, I wanted something special. It was!
MoreIt was ok for the price. Food was decent but the drinks were not I ordered a Tom Collins for a drink and they just mixed vodka and lemonade instead of the traditional gin lemon and club soda. Service was really good though!
MoreService was great, food was okay. We had a burger and chicken wrap with fries. Nothing special, but okay. Our server was very good though. She was very friendly and quick with water refills and checking on us.
MoreI ordered the blackened salmon and it was just plain baked salmon, no flavor. It was good baked, but definitely not blackened by any stretch of the imagination. My waiter took my drink before I was done with it and he never inquired about my food. I was disappointed for sure.
MoreGreat food and service. I really enjoyed my fish dinner. The person I ate with did have an issue with how her meal was prepared (I think it was due to a miscommunication when ordering). However, management decided to deduct that item from the bill! Wasn’t really expecting that. I think we were both surprised that we didn’t show our gratitude for the wonderful customer service. Thank you!I will definitely eat at Bull’s Head Tavern the next time I visit Grand Rapids.
MoreI went in with my fiance and we had the Gyro plate with their signature tzatziki sauce and it was delicious. She had their tenders, and let me tell you. Their customer service is outstanding, we asked for a dipping sauce that they didnt have available, thank god for down time, the chef went out of his way to make sure we had what we asked for. Wow. Truly recommend this place
MoreEven though we didnt have a reservation and they were busy, we were seated quickly. Food was good and waitress was friendly. Interesting selection of food. They have craft soda instead of mainstream sodas, but the kind we had was really good so it was a non issue
MoreA convenient location to events at Devos. Plan ahead and communicate to everyone in the restaurant that you have an event to attend. We were seated immediately however it took 20 minutes for a server to greet us. And another 15 minutes to place our order even though we let the server know we were ready to order. We waited another 45 minutes for our meals which came only after we stopped several employees inquiring about our order and repeating we had an event to attend. The food arrived and was very tasty but we couldnt enjoy it with only 15 minutes to eat. Plan ahead and allow 2 hours to enjoy a meal here.
MoreTried to eat there this evening around 6:00. We were seated upstairs by the hostess who looked like she rolled out of bed and showed up. We sat for about 15 mins without any water or any acknowledgement from a server. Eventually we just got up and left and ate elsewhere. I notified the hostess of the poor service and she didn’t seem to care.
MoreWent for a work lunch. We were from out of town and thought it looked good. Poor service, stale chips. The chicken salad sandwich had very little salad. The burger was not fresh but frozen and the Greek salad lettuce was super wilted and inedible. The squash soup was good as well the the gyro and the fried chicken salad with bacon. Too many places to choose from to have to eat here again.
MoreWent for lunch with a medium sized group. The food was not great, fries were dry as well as the burger. The wait staff was nice, professional, and attentive. The food took a bit longer, and I felt that if we were on a time schedule like most people are during the week at lunch, I would have given it a lower rating.
MoreGreat food and great "bar" atmosphere! The staff could have been a bit more involved, but other than that.. GREAT!Just finished... GREAT FOOD, But there was a hair in my fries. Stopped eating after that. My second beer also came with a small floaty. Eww. I liked this place but it doesnt seem that clean..
MoreThe sirloin is fantastic!!! And they make the best chocolate martini that I have ever enjoyed out... Fun atmosphere, great variety of food which makes many different palates happy :D
MoreMade an hour drive to eat here for our anniversary. Fast efficient service. The pork chops are amazing. Parking garage located just around the corner.
MoreMy wife had the smoked gouda chicken pasta and I had the sashimi tuna steak. Both were incredible! The restaurant was very nice but we didnt feel out of place in our shorts and casual wear. Service was good and the food was great. What else needs to be said? The prices were reasonable, especially for the quality, and the location great, in downtown GR.
MoreMy boyfriend and I really liked their restaurant week menu so we decided to come again and got the crab cakes to start. $9 for 2 crab cakes served on a bed of brown lettuce. If its brown just leave it off the plate.
MoreWent here for lunch today with my husband, daughter, and son-in-law. First time Ive been there but my daughter and her husband have gone frequently. The restaurant wasnt too crowded when we arrived about 1. Service was quick and friendly. I liked their lunch menu. Good prices and a nice selection. I had the house salad (full sizewith salmon. OMG, salmon was prepared perfectly and tasted so good. My husband had the sirloin and said it was cooked just right. My daughter had the perch and they didnt skimp on the portion. She had enough to bring some home. My son-in-law had the Greek salad and said it tasted great.Drinks were refilled frequently and we were checked on a few times without it being annoying.I liked the cozy atmosphere, all the interesting light fixtures, the tiles, and the wood that accented the bar.My only complaint was that the bathroom needed a thorough cleaning. The light fixtures there were dust covered and the trash was very full, as well as the stainless being covered in fingerprints and the mirrors very spotty.Other than that I enjoyed our visit and I would definitely eat here again.
MoreI walked in and before finding a seat I saw there was a argument going with some staff. I watched and saw three staff members arguing with a customer over his bill and a long wait for food. After seeing the attitude of the staff I decided not to eat here. A guest may very well be wrong, but I think it would be more professional to have one manger talk with them than to have three staffers arguing with a customer in a restaurant.
MoreIve come here for lunch several times. The food is pretty good, but I think this place is all about value. For the price you pay, I was quite surprised at the quality (in a good way). Its much better than your typical bar food. Its a pretty decent-sized space so getting a seat during lunch wasnt typically a major issue.
MoreBulls Head is a great atmosphere...mostly professional types. Have only been there for lunch (a number of times). Menu is good without being overwhelming. Today i had the sirloin and it was fantastic. Service is always top notch.
MoreFood (blackened salmonwas okay but extremely greasy. The spinach and artichoke dip was okay, nothing special. Our waitress was not very welcoming, no smile, and to be honest she seemed annoyed when any questions were asked. She did come frequently to refill water, drinks, and see if we needed anything. The restaurant was not quite half full when we went in there around dinner time. The prices are decent, compared to neighboring restaurants. Perhaps their lunch is better? If I ever find myself staying at the Amway again I won’t be going back here.
MoreIts got a cool "hipster" feel without making the non-hipster, non-skinny jean wearing, full sentence speaking adults feel out of place. Weve had the steak, lamb, and duck on different occasions. Its always been good. Worth the stop for drinks, dinner, or appetizers (dynamite shrimp was awesome!!)
MoreWarm and relaxing #atmosphere with higher quality food at reasonable prices. A great spot for pre #GRsymphony bites, or just a casual dinner when downtown. We make it a point to stop in for every #Grandwich, as Bulls Head has created a unique and satisfying dish each time. Service is great as well, but sometimes feels understaffed.
MoreWe accidentally wandered in here confusing it for a nearby Irish pub. Glad we did! After explaining to our waitress our confusion for not seeing Guinness and fin-and-chips on the menu, she made some awesome food and drink suggestions and provided great service. The food was great and the restaurant had many interesting things to catch your eye.
MoreAtmosphere was pleasant. The menu has some variety. Food came quickly and was good. Staff is nice, makes you feel like you want to be there. Prices are fair also.
More3.5 would probably be more appropriate. The staff was pleasant. Food was okay - it came out very quick which always is a red flag to me. Atmospheres really neat.
MoreGreat food, walking distance from devoss music center. Staff could have been a little friendlier. I felt like we were inconveniencing our waitress by being there. Decent prices on food and drinks. I recommend sitting upstairs. Very cool.
MoreGreat food, nice atmosphere, and reasonable prices for being fancy. I always have a good experience here.
MoreAmazing staff, and a great menu. The Smoked Gouda Chicken Pasta dinner is one of the best pasta dishes in the city. Karen and staff are always ready to help. Top notch establishment.
MoreTop quality service, makes you want to leave a hefty tip. Masculine vibes. I got the shrimp scampi, it tasted amazing. Five stars for the professional, friendly service, clean / cool interior, and great food / drinks!
MoreA great bar and lunch spot. Downtown for a convention I had brisket sandwich that was incredible. The service is very friendly and they take care of you. If you are going to lunch during a conference make sure to get there on time, it will fill up quickly. Its not a large location, but well worth a stop. A very classic downtown eatery.
MoreGood food but EXTREMELY slow! Took over an hour from the time we ordered until we got our food. For being located directly across the street from a large convention center (which has no food court), you would think they would be much better prepared.
MoreLamb shank was delicious and fell off the bone. Thank you to the waiter for the recomendation!
MoreFood was absolutely great. Great table service as well. Server was polite, apologetic, attentive, and just an all around happy person. It has a nice cozy atmosphere.Only thing that I had concern about is that it is a bit pricey. I guess you get what you pay for.
MoreLove Bulls Head. Great location for a good dinner at a great price for downtown food. The bar ambiance is perfect late at night for a quieter affair. Would highly recommend getting some dinner and drinks for a night on the town.
MoreWent out here with a group of friends and we were all treated very well. Each meal that came out looked better than the last, but even the first one tasted amazing. Well done by both the cooks and the wait staff!
MoreFavorite date night place! The smoked trout dip appetizer is one of my favorites and I get it every time I go. Also has a great selection of fish for the entree. I like getting the smoked salmon. Comfortable atmosphere with your choice of sitting in the main tavern area with the bar or upstairs where it is a little more romantic.
MoreThe atmosphere is lovely. Darkened dining in an upper room. I loved the look and feel of the place, However the food left something to be desired and in my opinion, was extremely overpriced. Drinks were overpriced as well and our waitress was kind of in her own world. We had a large party and she didnt seem to give us her utmost attention.
MoreGreat atmosphere for a light meal, beer, or full spread. Good service and right in the middle of downtown. Cant speak highly enough of this little spot. Great sandwiches and pasta.
MoreEaten here once at a special occasion dinner. The food was wonderful the service was good. I could imagine it would get noisy at times. Great selection of craft ciders. Very convenient for people who are staying downtown.
MoreI ordered the sirloin entree and honestly it has to be one of the worst steaks ever. The steak tasted like gril! The potato wedges had no flavor or seasoning and the mushroom glaze tasted like beef gravy and mushroom from a corner store. I was very disappointed. And unfortunately I was on my lunch break and I was just picking up real quick so I was left hungry all day! I will be calling to let them know they failed w my plate.
MoreFood was really good but our server was just ok, me and a friend ordered drinks and then she walked away without asking my boyfriend what he wanted to drink. Im glad we didnt get seated in the front corner under the ceiling fan because is was covered in dust. Our seats had food on then and the table was sticky. The place looks classier but they need to work on cleanliness a bit.
MoreThe world is a complicated place. Sometimes, the taste of a sweet onion ring provides a safe harbor in the midst of storms. It is my quest to find these harbors, and pass on the crucial knowledge to others. There are always storms, and always opportunities to find more onion rings. Recently, I went out to lunch with some coworkers. As luck would have it, they had onion rings! Two birds, one stone.Presentation and Appearance: 3.5/5The onion rings have a classic pub style appearance. A bit irregular on the breading, the shape bulges and twists. This is not, however, unappealing. It works, in its own way. I will say that most of the breading was a bit dark, indicative of some overcooking. One onion ring, buried beneath the heap, was lighter in complexion, and not overdone. The presentation is nothing special. The onion rings were twisted together in a heaping mass, almost inextricably tied together. The plate was a bit small, and crowded (with my gyro and pickle jockeying for space as well). Beyond that, I had no serious complaints.Taste: 3/5The taste of these onion rings was fairly complex (for an onion ring). The breading had a surprising depth and flavor. Clearly well seasoned, thought out, and well prepared, it was the highlight of the taste. The onion interior only had a mild taste, though it was present. I would have liked a more prominent onion flavor.Overall, the taste only had two serious flaws. The first was the weakness of many pub-style onion rings; an overwhelming, overpowering, and a somewhat disturbing permeation of grease. To a certain extent, this is unavoidable on an onion ring, even good ones. However, it was just a bit too the excess for my liking. In addition, the breading, while flavorful, was clearly and blatantly overcooked. Though this had more dramatic ramifications for texture, the taste suffered as a result.Texture: 2.5/5At first bite, the texture is fine, even good! With a delightful crunch, and no slippage of the onion, it seems fine. Indeed, they tend to maintain their shape with ease.Of course, all of these factors are explained by one horrible cause; the onion rings were dreadfully overcooked. It makes sense that an overdone onion ring would be crunchy, and shrivel up on itself to prevent any slippage of the onion. Of course the shape would be maintained. In truth, the overcooked nature of these onion rings completely ruins all the positive attributes of texture. Crunch, no slippage, and shape maintenance are only good if theyre derived from a proper frying, not from excessive time in the fryer.Value: 3.5/5These onion rings were not particularly expensive, but they were low in quantity, and overcooked. All in all, theyre a worthy side dish, but certainly not worth getting on their own.Total: 12.5/20Source: Sola Cepa
MoreThis place sucks when you are trying to order a French dip. They have the best French dip in GR however they play games and some days they end lunch at 4 other days they end lunch at 3 and if you get there 1 minute late and you arent dressed like a high roller, then you are garbage to them. So if you want something for lunch you better get there from 11 to 2, however you may still have to pull teeth to get what you want. The manager is useless and wont accommodate paying guests. So beware they do not want your business or money if you arent dressed as a high roller or in a fancy suit and tie. They, including the manager will lie to you that the kitchen ran out of food but that they will have it at 11a.m.
MoreHad a company dinner here. Food is first rate. Service is very good also. We had a table upstairs. Note that it can be loud here. There were 10 of us and it was hard to listen to folks the other end of the table. Great atmosphere. Will be back.
MoreReally cool atmosphere, great location (except for parking), and good food and drinks. Im not sure if I forget how much I like it every time I go, or if I just space out my visits enough that its surprising every time. Great for a private conversation (upstairsor a casual, more fun ambiance downstairs. Reasonable prices for great food, and their menu includes some more interesting options if youre looking for something out of the ordinary.
MoreIt was very busy. We sat at a side walk table and had an enjoyable meal.
We walked into Bulls head last night (Saturday), and let the hostess know that we were just grabbing a drink at the bar. She promptly said, "Okay, I guess, if you can find a seat up there. Its really busy." What an unwelcoming way to sway me into your restaurant to do business. And it also just wasnt THAT busy.My husband and I looked at each other and said that wed just go somewhere else. She then fired back, "Just so you know, everywhere is going to be just this busy..." I looked at her and told her I wasnt worried about it. Lets be real; Its Grand Rapids. Not New York City.Bulls Head, if you want returning patrons, you might encourage your hostesses to be a little more persuasive to stay when customers come through the door, instead of indirectly telling them to leave.
MoreWe stopped in on a whim, and boy are we glad we did! The atmosphere was casual but the dining is fine, the perfect fit for us. Alex, our server, was great with offering suggestions and totally on the ball with service. We ordered the Chicken breast and pork chops- both GORGEOUS! Topped it off with the homemade chocolate lava cake. Best decision ever!
