The University of Dublin Trinity College, College Green, Dublin, Ireland, Leixlip
Grand library location for illuminated illustrations of the Christian Gospels dating from 800AD.
Was a very informative exhibit. Lots of info to take in. I downloaded the audio guide, but it quit working within a few pieces.Highly recommend downloading BEFORE you go in as signal can be spotty & it may not download fully or correctly once there. The library is AMAZING, but I wish Id had an actual tour guide to tell me about some things. My only complaint was that there were small pockets of people/ late teens/ early 20s that just couldnt seem to respect the library rule of keeping voices down & it made it difficult to fully enjoy the experience.
One of the things that you have to do in Dublin. The audio guide was good to listen to. Bring headphones 🎧 Easy to download. The local pubs are great around here! We’ve completed the history and culture part in one fell swoop. 🎉
Informative and impressive display of one of the Book of Kells in the Trinity Library. App available to download for audio guide was very interesting. The campus was very busy the day of our visit, but still easily accessible and made for great viewing/touring the area. Also an extensive gift shop at the end of the tour.
Definitely a top experience in Dublin. Helpful if you know the story and the background, but if not there’s a very helpful museum that you go through beforehand. Definitely recommend buying your tickets in advance and getting there at least 5-10 minutes early.
What an amazing place full of history! Its incredibly beautiful and gives an account of the book of Kells. The campus here is amazing as well, definitely a must see!
Fun visit, learned a lot about the historical book making process and unique history of the book of Kells. Even our 2 young boys enjoyed the library section and the statue busts. Recommend a reservation.
You will spend most of the time learning about the history of the book and how it was produced. The display of the book, with it open under protective glass, is a little anticlimactic. This is not a critique of the exhibit, just how it seemed to me.However, you exit through the long hall, which is breathtaking and a joy for anyone who loves books! The busts, the donated collections, the displays, even the smell of all the books. The audio tour (which is included in your ticket on their appincludes both spaces is very well done.
Even with a mask on, the smell was unique. Makes ya feel like you’re breathing in history. Weird take but it was my biggest take away. Of course it was beautiful to see as well.
Highly recommend to buy your tickets online! We went there thinking we can just buy the tickets there. They will tell you to buy it online and since it was very late in the day, there were no tickets available online and so we bought a pair of tickets online for the next day. Amazing to finally see this library and to see the actual Book of Kells! Ive only seen a copy in Phoenix, Arizona at the Irish Cultural Center and was excited to see the original! It did not disappoint and the library was beautiful! A must see in Dublin!
Really?! Over 18 euros to get in to see a book in a glass case open to two pages. Yes the library is cool, but do you really have to ream me for entry. Bottom line is this is not worth the money. I visit London often and all the museums and galleries are free!!! Come on the British museum, free entry and I could spend a whole week in there and not see everything. If you are going to take peoples mon ey Trinity college, charge 8 euros for entry, still steep, but I could live with that fee.
Absolutely recommended. The story behind The Book oh Kells is really interesting and the Library is awesome. A little bit expensive the visit though.
Worth a detour!I think place is worth a detour. Its really beautiful and interesting. Not too big though. From the pictures I think gives the impression of being big but its not. You have to pay and its too expensive. That would be my main point. I dont think these prices are reasonable for just a library. Not sure how they decide these prices.
Very cool place. I would highly recommend you get tickets in advance otherwise you may not be able.you can purchase online or through tours. Head to trinity college and just past main courtyard on the right.Directly across the entrance is a bathroom and cafe which I would go to first then go on tour. The first part is mainly historical and background. Once you get past that portion you going to the main library and its just an amazing site. I highly recommend this place its just one of those things you have to do.
Very cool piece of history to see. Definitely check out the Long hall Library after the book.Buy tickets in advance online. The giftshop has some great trinkets and beautiful jewelry, although quite expensive.
Visually stunning library and it will be familiar for any Star Wars fan. The Book of Kells exhibit was quite disappointing. No really imagination presentation and to many people at one time. Slightly over priced for what you get.
A must see attraction when visiting Dublin. Good to keep about 40-50 mins for the entire tour. There is a free mobile app that can be used as an audio guide. The story behind the book of Kells manuscript is really interesting as it has survived over 1200 years. The long room is a dream for people who like big libraries. Overall a very fun and educational attraction for all ages.
An interesting exhibition. There are many ways to approach this and they have tried to cover them all. Its quite small inside and quite busy so a little difficult to get to see all the displays well. Lots of reading info if you like that (I do).Worth going for the long room alone
You have to book the tickets in advance, as the tickets usually sold out before the day. And just to be sure, be there ten minutes before your slot.It takes 30-60 minutes to visit, where you can see the original Book of Kells, a book containing the four gospels of the bible. Before the book, there are posters showing and describing the book. No flash photography at the exhibition. After that, you can enter a room to look at the book itself. Sadly, you can only look at two pages of the book. I asked and they say the book will be flipped by professional handlers every 6-8 weeks. No photography allowed in the room to preserve the book. The ticket will also include the visit to the Old Library and the Long Room, which is one of the prettiest library in the world. You can take pictures of busts of famous people. Do keep quiet as some students actually study in that library! There is a downloadable app if you are interested for a free audio guide, and there is 10% off if you show the app at the till for the gift shop.
The building and the exhibits are quite extraordinary. The book itself, however, is disappointing. Certainly for its own protection, its shown in a mostly dark room with almost no light, so its impossible to appreciate the work in its full beauty.
The place is located inside famous Trinity college. Basically its colleges library & inside this book of kells is been placed. Its one of the oldest known handwritten in 9th century book of 680 pages.in that era paper was not discover in england so the cow hide has been used as paper. The ink is been made from colour extracts from flowers, soil & tree bark which is available in near by woods. This book is written by the monks.it placed under glass cabinet for viewing & due to old age its not been allowed to photograph or make videos of it due to sensitivity to light. Every 4 months the pages of books which are on display is been changed to newer page. The chamber which holds the book is been well guarded. The other area of library one is allowed to photograph or video but use of flash is not allowed. The library has in total 28 rows on either sides & holds books of almost every known subjects to human beings. The library is been decorated with marble statues of the greats who has contributed to the trinity college inform of research & teachings. All in all best place to visit.
Nice place to learn more about the book of Kells and medieval writing techniques. The library is also impressive to see. All in all its not that big and you should be done in 1-2 hours if you read a lot of the texts. Be aware that the place can be extremely crowded.
The book itself is pretty spectacular to see in person. You can only see the page that its open to that day (they occasionally change them), and its behind glass with special lighting. No photos allowed. The attached library is amazing as well, which includes one of the original prints of the Proclamation. Theres also Brian Borus harp and a few other amazing artifacts. Its a working library and you can see where the librarians and "readers" work.Great piece of Irish history.
Did the 0830 self-guided tour and it was awesome. Download the free audio tour and youll spend about 30-45 minutes total. The first section of the tour can get quite busy as its a small room sectioned off for different exhibits, but its very informative and worth throwing a few elbows for. The actual Book of Kells is in its own room and you CANT take any photos (to preserve the book from unnecessary light exposure, not because they want to be jerks and rob you of taking photos). The page is turned about every 8 weeks so what you see is always different depending on how frequently you go. After the Book of Kells, you go into the Long Room and you can spend as much time as you want. Its as amazing as you expect. All in all, a great tour worth the money.
Interesting exhibition. The book itself is only opened on 2 pages. But there is an extensive hall with enlarged pictures of pages and detailed explanations. It ends into the library of trinity college. Which is gorgeous and worth the visit alone.
So I originally went here because I wanted to see the old library. Which was stunning and amazing, but the Book of Kells was also surprisingly interesting as well! I highly recommend the audio tour. based on others reviews I used my international data plan rather than the wifi and it worked fine. Fascinating and gave a lot of insight into the old history of Ireland I was honestly unaware of. The old library was stunning and beautiful. Quite crowded but I also went on a weekend. Also definitely buy tickets ahead of time! I did not think it would be that busy but I am glad I got my ticket the day before. When I arrived (about 30 min earlyto the campus, there was a sign that said totally sold out for the day!
An iconic hand written book, the Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin Vulgate containing the four Gospels of the New Testament. It is over a thousand years old and is simply beautiful. The library is equally as impressive. Just a stunning afternoon looking at world class historical exhibits.
Free wifi but 18 euro is too much. Even someone who teaches the history of graphic design, this is just too expensive... Can be in and out in 15 minutes. Youre better off Going to get some Irish whisky at a pub...
The Book Kells is the centre attraction, the Long Room is a grande exit and what an exit. If you want to avoid crowds book early, but it is an incredibly popular attraction so be prepared. The book is utterly incredible a beautiful book, a real National Treasure. But equally so is the stunning Long Room. Do not arrive late for your booking in busy periods no guarantee you will be accommodated on a later time slot. But no matter what its well worth a visit.
Very interesting place inside the Trinity College. A exhibition about the Book of Kells, which contains the four Gospels of the New Testament. They keep the book there (you can’t take pictures of itand tell the story about the book and the catholicism in Ireland. The details and colors of the book are amazing, even more when you think that it was all handmade and used ancient drawing and coloring techniques. It has a audioguide via QR code, which is great.By the end of the tour you get to the old library of the college. An amazing and beautiful place, filled with many years old books. It’s a must go when you’re in Dublin.
The book of Kells was interesting to see, the whole display area though was very cramped due to the size and the amount of people they continually pushed through. We did the tour of trinity as well which was neat to get some history, our tour guide (Michaelwas fantastic. The library by far was more interesting than the book of Kells, but I’m also not a huge nerd for stuff like that. It was an experience, would definitely do it, just don’t expect a whole lot.
All I can say is wow! This place is so beautiful right within the breathtaking campus of Trinity College in Dublin! There was so much historical information regarding the Book of Kells and even though you cannot take photos of the actual book it was cool to see in person. The main library was so huge and the architecture of the library was amazing! If I had a library looking like that back at home I would be there in a heartbeat haha! Truly amazing! Recommend going there at least once
I went at 9am and it was still busy so I don’t know how you get a picture of it deserted if that’s even possible anymore.Exhibit is good. Pretty short at 30 mins maximum to see everything. As a joiner it was good to check out the craftsmanship
The price doesnt justify the place. It should be between 5e-7e. It takes literally 10 mins to see the whole thing along with statues and inscriptions. The library is nice, but you cant read or touch anything. A major rip off.
This self-tour was one of our favorites in Dublin. The Book of Kells exhibit was very informative, which you walk through before seeing the book itself. Keep in mind that they don’t let you take photos of it. After seeing The Book of Kells, you then walk into the library which is pretty awe-inspiring. Something overlooked is the smell, which is incredible if you like that old book/bookstore smell. You can take as much time as you like throughout the entire tour. We had our tour earlier in the morning which works out well as there was a long line waiting by the time we got out. After the library the tour ends and you walk downstairs through a large gift shop that sells a little bit of everything.
Totally enjoyed it.Arrived to the place without a ticket. You can buy one using a QR code while waiting in the line. By the way, I was there at 11:50 and only tickets for 13:00 (1 pmwere available.Inside a self audio guide and a leaflet in few languages. The exposition is rather short, but incredible and worth waiting in the queue. The stuff checks the ticket really quickly.
Try to go early in the morning before it’s people-y. The hour tour of the campus is nice, we did not end up doing the audio tour because it was so busy and we couldn’t turn around. So we saw the book and library. Seeing the book & library is about 30 minutes. The tour is about an hour. If they did one way traffic flow it would have been much more enjoyable.
Love Trinity College and the access to the Book of Kells! They do such a great job keeping the library in perfect condition. Highly recommend this as a must do in Dublin.
It was certainly unique to see an original copy of a portion of the four testaments, especially with all the history provided leading up to seeing it. The free audio tour via app was really nicely done a good supplement to the written exhibition. The Old Library is a beautiful space worth admiring, especially for book lovers, and really gives you a chance to appreciate the history of Trinity College.
If you like seeing beautiful libraries youre in for a treat. On the impressive campus of Trinity College, this tour starts with an exploration of a number of ancient Irish biblical texts culminating in an up close view of the famous Book of Kells. Then pass into the long room/library filled with two stories of tightly-packed shelves, an original copy of the Irish declaration of Independence, and the oldest extant Irish Harp which was used to model the insignia of Ireland. Takes about an hour to tour the exhibit depending on your pace.
A must do on your trip to Dublin. My group of four guys were reluctant and afterward, all agreed it was a worthwhile experience. The history and architecture is extraordinary and the library transports you back in time. Seeing the book of Kells (800 A.D.is worth the price of admission!!
Magical place to see, despite the very highly priced entranced ticket (15€). It is truly one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. The little museum on the Book of Kells and its history is also quite interesting.
Fascinating, historical port of call in Dublin! Walk around at your own pace listening to guided commentary on your own devices pausing, going back if you need more time. Great facility in good condition! Definitely recommend this !
Lots of information on display to explain the facts of the Book of Kells. Beautiful long room/ library. Doesn’t take too long to look around, but well worth it to see such a piece of History.
One of the coolest tours Ive been on in Dublin! I thought Id only stay 30 minutes, but I ended up being here almost 3 hours! Definitely worth it.
Although you can’t take a photo of the pages from the book of kells, and although some people don’t care for the crowds and the wait, for me it was one of my absolute must see things in Dublin from the moment we planned this trip and it did not disappoint. It was just a really emotional and surreal moment to be standing so close to something so old and so delicately maintained for so long. It just has this really precious appeal to me and so I would always recommend it to any book lover or artist, or historian.
Amazing to experience view something with so much history! Audio guide is available as an app so just bring headphones to listen along. A nice benefit to getting a ticket is you get to experience the old library upstairs which is just as awe inspiring as the book
Excellent place to visit. The price is quite steep, but I would say its worth it. Experience is as follows: First you go to a room with huge reproductions of the most interesting pages of the Book of Kells and the Book of Durrow. Theres a ton of information about various aspects of these books. Then you can see one of the volume of the Book of Kells (no photos allowed here). Afterwards you head to the old library, an awe-inspiring place, which houses the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, the Brian Borus harp (coat of arms of Ireland, also on Guinness logo), and another volume of the Book of Kells. All must see!
It was amazing to see the book of Kells, I recommend to do the audio tour that you can download on your phone. This will give you an insight and deep understanding about the book. Very beautiful book and beautifully written. What an amazing thing to see. The long room took my breath away, I loved seeing all the books and the beautiful room. You have to come and see this if your in Dublin I highly recommend.
What an amazing area this is on the campus of a school. The oldest library is here located and it was absolutely stunning! If youre considering is it worth paying €18 (because we wereit is!!!
Beautiful library full of history. Worth it if youre into libraries and books. Tickets are a bit pricey. The audio tour is nice, but you get practically the same by reading the pamphlet and the text on the walls.
