Pints and pub grub on 3 floors with live music, comedy, cabaret, dance classes and TV sports.
Incredible venue with well appointed rooms. Friendly staff and great facilities in a really great, convenient location.
If planning a wedding here then take note. Your wedding meal is one of those up there with Christmas and Christenings in people wanting it to be just right. If you want a total mess then book the Bedford. Each component of the food, that should have been eaten together, arrived 15 to 20 minutes after the last had been brought out. So 150 ravenous guests dived in not realising more was to come due to the total lack of any information. By the time the last item was delivered, guests had eaten the other components... 15 minutes apart, so were no longer hungry. Disgraceful considering the amount of money being spent. The head chef and so called manager either need a stern talking to, be trained properly as they aint fit for purpose or be replaced. It is not difficult to deliver a meal on time with all components brought out at the same time. It is your job and wow, did you mess this one up with aplomb. Wouldnt waste my money eating here, the food aswell as late was fairly tasteless and each component served at a different temperature. Main item being luke warm, at best, and a side with a sauce so hot it nearly burned ones mouth.
The bedrooms were very nice. Along with the en suite bathing facilities. The upstairs function rooms were o.k. with one exception. The Bar. The bar had only 1 draft beer option and even that ran out at about 22:00. This meant going downstairs to the main bar area. Plus at that time glass drink containers are not provided.. prices a bit steep fir all drinks.
The bouncers at this bar think it’s okay to grapple women to the ground. I have never been so horribly treated in my entire life. My friend was battered for walking into the men’s toilets accidentally. Do not go here if you value your own safety and security
The Bedford hosted our wedding on the 1st of October and we cannot thank them enough for making it such a special day. Every detail was organised and managed perfectly. They brought to life everything we had envisioned. Our friends and family have been raving about the delicious meal and the huge pizzas that were brought out later in the evening. The drinks were flowing, everything went so smoothly and we had a fantastic time. Thank you so much to Becky and Anne (and formerly the lovely Roryfor pulling it off so perfectly.
Thuggish members of staff….highly questionable, probably illegal, marketing strategies re the marathon event (just Google “the Bedford Pub/Haroon Mota” ….yup I would almost certainly avoid such a place. Just the internet/social media scraping but alone is enough to put me off….you need consent to do that you know? What’s next…thuggish bouncers taking a dislike to someone and …. No thanks 🙏
Great venue and nice food and drink - the bouncers on a weekend though are absolutely terrible. Thuggish and looking for conflict, exactly the opposite of what security should be like. Idiots. Management should make a change as I can see a dozen other reviews saying the same thing.
Had an awful experience at The Bedford last night - were Bedford natives and have loved this pub for years. We went with 25 people for my friends 30th, each paying the £5 cover charge and getting there early to ensure we werent queueing as we were a big group. The bouncers let us all in with the exception of the last person and were laughing at her because she was in fancy dress - we were queueing respectfully and at best it came across as a classic case of bouncer power-tripping - at worst, an attempt to get our money and then get rid of us. Nothing ruins a place like overzealous bouncers and I would urge the owners to have a word as theres 25 Balham locals who will now opt for The Regent, or Hagen and Hyde as an alternative. The place has gone downhill over the past 3 years with the introduction of a cover charge to get into the pub on a weekend (!and its a shame as this was our go-to local.Ultimately, we all left and sadly its unlikely any of us will be returning soon. Love this place but treat your regulars with a bit of respect - you dont get a 30th twice and it will be remembered for how poorly we were treated.
Great pub, thats holds fantastic comedy nights, and has incredible staff working there. Highly recommended.
A bit different from when I used to drink there as an apprentice, 50 years ago, but still a great pub, with a good varied lunch menu.
Beautiful building with plenty of places to sit, friendly staff, decent range of draught beers, and excellent food! Wish I was I local, Id come here all the time!
Absolutely, THE place to stay in a historic hotel that includes a family and pet friendly pub and restaurant. Two other rooms serve as venues for live music and comedy. Had an absolutely fabulous time.
The Bedford is a pub & hotel, close to the underground & train stations, also is served by TFL buses. The Bedford serves a selection of beers, wines, meaks & snacks. The Bedord also hosts live music events at evenings & weekends. I first went in July 2018 to watch Katie Kittermaster, then a rising singer-songwriter. I returned last Wednesday September 7th when Caitlin McCarthy & her band performed a set of original songs. There were tables & chairs in front of the stage & more seats on a balcony.
Hadnt been there for a while, but met a mate for a couple and the Timothy Taylor Landlord was pretty much as good as Ive had anywhere. This is a big, busy pub with lots going on in the evenings. Ive eaten there once pre-covid, I remember it being quite unremarkable but that was probably several chefs (?ago, and maybe I should try it again. While Im here Sept 8th Jon Allen, hadnt heard of him until we were asked if we would put a poster in the shop window, checked him out on Spotify, turns out to be very, very good and will hopefully be there myself.
Stayed for a party weekend. Lovely rooms. Friendly staff. A bit noisy all night but decent earplugs provides. Great location.
The bouncers and bar staff were incredibly rude, acting with extreme contempt. They were very grabby and teamed up with each other to bully my friend & I for no particular reason. Avoid the Bedford at all cost if you want a good Friday night experience. There are far more enjoyable clubs in the area for cheaper prices too. Also avoid this club if you dont want to get inappropriately grabbed by bouncers... I felt very uncomfortable and unsafe. And I havent even mentioned the dead atmosphere.
What an evening! Thanks Tony! This is what todays music business needs! Great venue, great people, great music! Plus: The friendly atmosphere of a genuine pub!
Lovely experience for the comedy club, was a great night with friends, would definitely go back there and recommend it to anyone who fancies a good night out.
The Bedford is an excellent drinks, dinning and entertainment hub in Balham. This time we were in for a charity event in an air conditioned room. They also run comedy events, live gigs and dance classes/ events. On Saturday after the comedy the space becomes a free live club with DJ playing excellent house tracks, close your eyes and be whisked off to an Ibiza club night.Popular with late 20s to mid 30s crowd of white young professionals.
We go there for a dance lesson in ballroom on Thursdays at 1.30pm in the hall above. The teachers are excellent and the room has aircon. Its £15.00 each and tea coffee and water are included. There is a restaurant in the main bar downstairs. Their soup is good.
Great place for weekend brunch in Balham. Not too busy, staff lovely and food really good!
Beautiful old ballroom. Good venue to have a gathering.
Fab pub, lovely atmosphere. Reasonable prices for food and drinks considering it is in London! Fab quirky decor and really close to Balham station. Will definitely be visiting next time I am in London
Extremely bad management on behalf of the Bedford and heavy handed security operatives lacking any sensibility ruined my partners birthday celebrations. Nice venue but void at all costs..
I went clubbing here as I am not fond of going into central London for clubbing due to transport return being long (I am from tooting bec). So we decided to try the dance floor at the Bedford pub and we were very pleasantly surprised! The club only gets busy around midnight, but there is lots of space and great music. Drinks are expensive as expected. 5 jäger bombs for £24. And I did not experience any situations where I would feel unsafe or uncomfortable :)
One of the best pubs in South London. A true gem. Feels almost regal, particularly the auditorium out back. We stayed the night and got married in the morning at Wandsworth Town Hall. They made us feel so special.
The Bedford used to be amazing, staff sometimes slow these days, not the same energy and passion that it was a few years agoOh and now £5 entry after 11pm, Ive heard Hagan and Hyde is now the place to go, its open until like 1/2am and has a great atmosphere
Great food, friendly staff and an outstanding comedy club on site. I cannot recommend this pub enough. A great night out
This place was an absolute vibe. I came for the club and it was fun. Good music, good people and the drinks werent too expensive (they also werent cheap).
Lovely pub and great intimate venue, but the manager wasnt very friendly - especially at close.
A quiet lunch time drink after looking around for a new pad. Lovely building with friendly staff, there is a hotel here and they seem to have several events on in the near future including a comedy night. A surprise of a hall inside which is beatiful. Some famous comedy names on the wall here, worth a look around. Nice outside also. Clean, only shame is the road however its a great place to watch the world go by. Visited before at night it was buzzing!
Really quaint hotel and bar in London. Very quirky decorations. The shower was lovely. Its a club downstairs at night too if you are into that sort of thing. Didnt eat here but good selection of teas available in the rooms and its right next to the tube station. Would definitely stay again.
Went to the comedy night. I just loved the place. It reminded me of the very old music hall pubs and the comedy was very good. I quite like the Bedford it was my first time hopefully not my last.
Went there for a few drinks and did at lunch time. Ordered food and drinks. After 15 mins drinks didnt come. I asked the girl behind the bar and she said you didnt order drinks and walked away. Pub had less than 10 people there. When food came I asked for drinks again from grol that served us. and she apologiesd and said they are coming. 5 mins later 2 out of 3 drinks came. Other girl that said we didnt order drinks came so I asked her and she ignored me. Then I had to go and ask and got my drink. Havent been in a while bit used to go a lot. Out of all my life it was one of the most absent service Ive ever had. £60 ish to leave feeling like a joke. Sadly I know never to go back again. 0 out of 5.
Ive walked past this place hundred times and never stepped in until last night and I was quite pleased and happy to discover it. I never knew there was a dance floor! It shut down bit early though, and the bar stopped service really early too. Nice music made it even. Oh ,the entry charge is questionable in places like that.
My husband and I went to the Bedford for a Sunday roast yesterday. The veg and cauliflower cheese was very under cooked and potatoes were hard and dry. The gravy just tasted like it was instant. I dont know why they think this is acceptable! The glass of prosecco that was ordered was flat too. We pointed this out to the waitress and asked for another glass which was still flat. Im pretty sure she just gave the same glass back to us. Service was very unfriendly too. Such a waste of money! Save yourself the trouble and go elsewhere.
Came to The Bedford after they had their refurb, a couple years ago!Service was very poor, food not nice, staff were not smiling! We came back today, and thought we would give it another go, as we live local, but it seems nothing has changed!!Again service was poor, and was a quiet lunch time, Saturday. Staff were not smiling (when mentioned to the manager on shift, she gave the excuse that, "theyhad all worked late lastnight, and where working till 4am", sorry but there is no excuse for an unsmiling service, when you work in the hospitality industry). Some of the male staff where busy watching sports on the TV, instead of paying attention to clientele in the premises, we tried to catch his attention 4 times, but fell on blind eyes!We ordered starters and they were okay! Then we ordered mains, Crab pappadelle, which was nice & a chicken ceasar salad... but the chicken ceasar salad, was very poor ... not enough ceasar dressing, we had to ask for more, and the chicken was over cooked and dry, couldnt even cut into it with a knife & fork, let alone chew it!That bad we sent the ceasar salad back, and asked for it to be taken off the bill!I dont think we will come back again, ever now!Its okay for a place to drink at the bar or tables, but wouldnt really recommend the food in The Bedford, Balham!
What a Pub! Great service, delicious food and the venue our back is the best Ive ever played in! Had a wonderful night, my only complaint is it should be closer to my house.
Really good vibe and pleasant staff makes The Bedford a good pub experience. Plus they have a range of events on including Pro Wrestling.
Lovely pub, nice selection of drinks and the food is good. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. The Swing Dance classes on a Tuesday are also absolutely brilliant, would highly recommend! The venue is lovely as well, great aesthetic and lovely indoor and outdoor seating.
A super place, The Bedford is relaxed whilst sophisticated and offering most things to most men. Pub, hotel, entertainment venue, eatery. It is wonderful. The staff are lovely and the beer is excellent. Most enjoyable!
Very helpful staff, I stayed here and left my Amazon fire stick remote in my hotel room. They returned it to me after I left it thankyou so much most hotels would ignore any requests like this.Great discount on food if you stay 1/3rd off food, very cool art deco style i felt like I was on the Titanic but with a happy ending 🙂
I had my wedding at the Bedford last weekend. I cannot recommend them enough. The staff team, particularly Rory, really went the extra mile to make sure that our day was perfect. The club room was ideal for our ceremony and the ballroom seated all our guests wonderfully. Everyone has told us how perfect the venue was and I have to agree.
One of the formative pubs of the London Comedy scene. Big old boozer, famous for the Balham Poisoner case. Good range of beers, friendly staff and you can see some of the comedians whove worked here in the picture
Went few times for food and drinks and I had great time, food was a bit pricey (or the portion a bit smallbut almost always very good. Cannot fault the drink department as you are spoiled with choices. I’ll definitely be back for a gig, I have high expectations!Edit: and I did it, went back for a good night of live music and it was superb, great artists, a big pizza and a lot of fun, not to be missed.
I cannot rate the Bedford more highly or the staff with more warmth. The place is a landmark to SW London. I have taught 3 yoga classes a week in the ballroom now for a few years and have always been so warmly welcomed and looked after. Everyone who works at the Bedford shares the same interest in ensuring that each visitor leaves with a very pleasant experience of the venue. The food is great and the menus varied. I LOVE IT!
Best pub in London.- Great food. The camembert is unreal. Good pub grub and a decent roast.- Friendly staff and good service.- Lots of events.
Lovely venue & location. Nice rooms. Very good positives. Lighting in the bathroom not strong enough to shave or do makeup (wifes comment!Party scene finishes at 2pm so leave your sleeping until later. Super service.Pub is lovely. Definitely would stay again all things considered
Amazing venue. Great music from Nick Howard, Rotem (she was simply amazing!and Alexis Corey.Food was okay. I asked for the crab starter as a main. Was charged £14 for 6 small crab cakes. Not worth it sadly but very delicious though.Broccoli with chilli and garlic was over cooked. Quite bland.Ice cream dessert was lovely but served with a large soup spoon. The espresso martini (in a carafe!was surprisingly very good and good value.Overall, food & drink prices and quality were decent.Overall the service was good. The main waitress berated our table of 6 for paying separately as we went along but thankfully the more junior waitress was okay about it.Definitely worth another visit. Some small tweaks in the menu and service and it would be 5 stars for sure.
The Bedford is a fairly traditional boozer, located just a couple of minutes walk from Balham tube station and seems to have undergone some recent refurbishment. There are plenty of comfy seats and a roaring fire, perfect for a cold winters night. All of the bar staff were very welcoming and helpful, with no attitude or ego. Music playing in the main bar is kept at a low enough volume that you dont need to shout when speaking to someone. I didnt order a full meal, but the sides I ordered were brought over to the table promptly and were nice and tasty. Drinks – even soft drinks – were a bit steep, though. The circular theatre/music venue in the back is a little gem. Sound was great and the layout was quirky without being awkward, with a seated area on the main floor and an upstairs balcony running around the circumference of the room – a bit like a mini Roundhouse.
