10-12 Bear St, Charing Cross, London WC2H 7AS, Prince Albert
Victorian pub with pavement tables and dining room named after former customer, Charlie Chaplin.
Great pub, great atmosphere and typical central london prices. Came here with my brother for the second time and have been warmly welcomed by Artur. Wide selection of ales and service was excellent.
Great atmosphere at this pub and so close to Leicester Square too. Always stop in here for drinks with friends when in the area.
Booked a table for myself and two colleagues. When we got there, not only was there no booking or tables but I was helpfully told that was another pub just up the road that might have a table. This was really quite depressing - I often use this pub when going to theatre or meeting up with colleagues. It wont stop me coming to the pub - its just a shame and left an unpleasant taste.
Recommended. Very busy small bar, good welcome, and good ales. Dining room upstairs. The standard Nicholsons menu is very agreeable.
The staff was friendly and helpful. There is a nice selection of beers. The food we orderer was fresh and tasty
Great pub, friendly staff, decent beer and top notch service.Recommended 👍🏻
Suitable venue for quick drink before and after a West End film or theatre visit. Otherwise a standard pub experience which does not linger in the memory. Toilets could have been cleaner.
My mate and I went to this pub last night and it was actually amazing. The beer I had was good the staff are happy and friendly
Great place! Friendly staff and they have a very soft on the skin sanitiser. Would definitely recommend!
Great food and will not be left hungry as portions are proper size pub meals. Recommended as a British pub experience. Very friendly and helpful owners.
Spent a pleasant couple of hours sat outside this traditional London Pub , had one of their pies with fresh veg and gravy which was fine, but somehow the mashed potatoes were burnt , obviously to long in the microwave getting warmed up , classic mistake Chef .
Great pub and friendly staff! The customer service is excellent and Arthur provided us with unmatched service. Best pub I have visited in a long time!
Had lovely time, Arthur was very helpful and recommended me a delicious burger! would definitely return again
I had the most amazing steak pie served by the lovely Artur. Amazing service from him and he made sure everything was good. Very welcoming!!! would recommend.
Typical English pub , nice atmosphere in the heart of the city. Food and drinks good and not expensive. The customer is welcome by the staff
It’s a good pub, with typical central london vibe and close to Leicester Square. Gin & tonics are like £7🍹
I went in to get a quick pree drink and was outstanded by the friendly welcome I received from artur not only did he convince me to stay a bit longer but also gave me suggestions on different drinks I ended up spending money but I was happy and had a good time
Came here the other night and the food was great, however the service was exceptional. Artur treated us like family and we felt very welcome, will be back again soon!
Good atmosphere, drinks were made quickly. Had a helpful server who looked after me and my friends called Artur.
Excellent pub with a wide variety of drinks! Thanks to Artur for providing excellent service and recommending what’s now my favourite beer! The Neck Oil! I will be sure to come again soon. Recommend this pub to everyone that’s visiting central London.
Decent pub, close to theatres, with the potential to offer a good range of ales. Sadly, three were "off", (unlucky timing?but I still managed to find something (!that I enjoyed. Didnt eat, but the menu looked interesting and could be worth a revisit.
We had a great experience at this traditional English pub. Great food, drinks, atmosphere, and service. We would definitely go back!
Liked this pub. Sat outside and watched the world go by. Price of beer is standard for London and hubby said beer was good
Very nice place and friendly service. Burger was good, but little dry for my taste. Fullers beers 🍻 was tasty as well.
I went to this pub yesterday and Ana went above and beyond and hand made me the best non-alcoholic mojito I’ve had in London yet, maybe ever. They don’t even SERVE non-alcoholic mojitos. Ana got crafty and mixed together a few things that would make it taste the same and even made the cocktail look amazing with dried oranges and lime slices. Both Ana and the drink deserve 10 stars.
We have eaten here before regularly thats why we chose to have our Anniversary dinner here. The service for bringing our meal out was very poor. They brought the food out before they brought the cutlery ( which we had to ask forthen we had to ask for salt, they never brought out the box with the condiments in just the salt. We never had a checkback to see if everything was alright.I had a Beyond Burger and it was filled to the brim with jalapenos (which have never come in a burger before...I mean, it was stacked with them. I scraped them out. The staff were all bunched up around the laptop at the bar being inattentive to any guest. This has made us rethink visiting The Bear And Staff again.
Was in the area and decided to pop in with a friend. Lots of selections and the staff was friendly. Thanks Sandy for helping me pick a gin, it was great!
Lovely visit on a day in london! Excellent range of drinks and our server Sandy gave us excellent recommendations on the gin selection.
Really friendly staff and a good selection of beers. The outside section is perfect for people/tourist watching!
Great pub always go in here when visiting London.Great place to sit n watch the world go by!
Beer selection was down. Apart from this it is a really nice space with air con and really accommodating staff.
Good central London MTG point. Outside seating in summer a bonus. Close to all the theatres and China Town.
Unfortunately, the fish and chips werent available but we had to some good pies! The boar and chorizo one was pretty tasty.
Nice pub with a decent outdoor seating area in a busy location. Was quite busy, but the service was still good.
We came back to this pub twice late at night for fairly priced pints and shooters. Nice vibe and not overly crowded. Bathrooms were pretty dirty, but to be expected late at night at a pub downtown.
Food is good here. Staff are friendly. Atmosphere is comfortable. People seem to always enjoy this Famous landmark P.Hse in the hart of West End^.Very nice.
ALLERGEN TRAINING IS SHOCKINGI went to The Bear and Staff with my family this Sunday. What I can say is that anyone with intolerances / allergens should avoid or be very careful as the allergen training conducted by both the team members and management was dangerous.I have both a gluten and lactose intolerance, if I had a severe coeliac reaction I would not be okay right now. Firstly I went up to the bar to order a salmon nutrious salad (I forget the name). I said I had a gluten and lactose intolerance, can I check if this is gluten and lactose free. The response was: "Im not very good at this stuff", and continued to say along the lines of: we used to have a paper booklet but we lost that. Now we have an iPad but I dont know where that is. He asked if I was allergic, I said no but I have an intolerance and still react poorly to both. He said: "fair enough".He said that he would find the manager as he didnt know what was in the salad or the allergen information. I waited 15 mins for the manager to come down. Which was followed with more waiting for him to then talk to the chefs. We then went onto the Glass Onion iPad app to check. Once I saw it was the French dressing that contained gluten, I then checked if the rest of the salad was intolerance free. I asked for olive oil on the side instead. I was also asked if I still wanted the French dressing on the side...which was already quoted to have gluten...The salad came without olive oil so I asked for some. Once I started eating the lettuce on the outside I realised that under the tender-stem broccoli there was what looked like grains / cous cous / or some bulgar wheat. As I was unsure so I took the bowl back to the bar to ask what the ingredient was. And again explained my intolerance to another bar member who also was very clueless to how to handle allergens. She asked me multiple times ."Did you eat it...but did you eat it?" I explained that I only ate a few salad leaves before I realised. I explained that I get bad migraines and bloating from gluten. Still no apology. Still no concern from either bartenders. I have just left hospitality working in pubs like these with positions as bartender, waitress, food runner and dessert chef. Thats why I know chain restaurants like these pubs and restaurants that use Aztec and Fourth systems usually have online allergen training that must be completed. The fact that I waited 30 minutes to come to a conclusion that communications from back of house to front of house failed drastically and that it might not have been the sauce and in fact the salad itself contained gluten, at this point I was frustrated and shocked that there was no apology, no worry, no concern, no solutions provided to help the situation. I got a replacement salad, however I had to double check that it was a fresh salad without the grains just being taken out. There was also no humus, no pumpkin seeds, but there was salad dressing!Absolutely shocking at the fact that this is such a dangerous game to play. I explained several times to put into context that they could have caused serious harm if this had of been a person with a more severe immediate reaction. Gluten and lactose intolerance a side, if there had been any customers with nut allergies, I am scared to how any of the staff including the management would have handled the situation. There was no confidence from the start. And no apologies. The staff were rude and did not seem to care about the service. I did not want to write this review, but I am truly uncomfortable with how dangerous allergens could be when there is sufficient allergen training in place to give customers a safe eating environment.
Small oldy worldy pub, serves food, not eaten here but it always looks very tasty, apparently their pies are very good. You can sit outside and watch the bustle of people and traffic while you have a drink, or sit inside if the weather is typically London 😀
Lovely cosy pub with a good selection of cask ales, and some nice wines.A friendly welcome from the staff, and an altogether pleasant experience on my first visit. I didnt dine, but the food looked like good wholesome pub fare. Will definitely be going back.
Bang in the heart of theatre land and a perfect place for a pint and some classic pub grub before a show. We shared a tasty but greasy calamari starter. Served with a lovely aioli. I opted for a rich, well filled, suet pastry game pie but there were lots of others to choose from. My partner had two small sides of mac n cheese and beef croquettes. Everything was well presented and tasted great. Nearly lost a star with no WiFi but food and service was just too good.
My most favourite pub in London. We use it often. Dark an moody settings are what most pub goers like. A really great pub if you like this.
Nice place, good food, but the waiter was neither efficient nor very nice and we waited for our food a loooooooooooong time, despite that the place wasnt busy.
Perfect customer service and good pub, we tried the famous Sunday roast but it is not like in the photos we saw in google maps, the meat portion was very small as can be seen in the photo and it was not so bad, the loaded fries were very good and the ciders are served with a strawberry inside.
The Bear & Staff dates back to 1714 (the current building 1878and sits rather pleasingly on the corner of Bear Street... so named after The Bear pub which was once on this same street, or potentially named after Augustine Beare, a glazier who worked near here). The bear & staff itself is the crest of the Neville Family. As a Nicholson’s chain pub it retains a fair amount of dark wood historic pub charm - with this branch in particular adorned by various old drawings and photographs of bears, together with a satisfying food menu. Charlie Chaplin used to drink and dine here, so perhaps you should too!The only negative is that the opposite side of Bear Street (though it’s really little more than an alleyis rather ugly and so detracts from the charm somewhat if you are sat outside (the hustle and bustle of nearby Leicester Square is a given and should be embraced!).If you found my review helpful or informative plus give it a thumbs up 👍🏼 Thank you!
Excellent selection of beers and gins in this Nicholsons pub situated on Charing Cross Road near to the theatres. Pleasant and friendly staff. We had the fish and chips which were some of the best we have had in a pub for a very long time.
An interesting pub with a long history explained using pictures signs and plaques inside and outside the building. We visited early in the day and found plenty of space to have a quiet drink and read about the history of the place. We passed by later in the evening and it was packed out. Not a great range of beers but OK and the service was quick and efficient. Although we did not eat there were plenty of people around us who seemed to be enjoying the food.
A great sausage house! We had two types of sausages duck and cherry and lamb with apricot. We had a 3 year old with us also. She had fish goujons with mashed potatoes and garlic bread and she loved it. The lagers and cider were exactly what we needed for such a delicious meal.
Lovely little pub with loads of English charm and a large selection of drinks. Unfortunately its also got a very loudmouthed large member of staff whos very rude and obnoxious which just ruined it for me.
Very nice pub. Wasnt too many people when we came. We ordered the Sunday Roast and it was moist and tasty. Also tried the sticky toffee pudding with icecream which was a nice dessert. Waitress was brilliant she was quick and friendly. Highly recommend.
Hidden gem of traditional, very good quality, British pub food. In Charlie Chaplins dining room, hidden upstairs, in this traditional pub just off Leicester Square. Most meals costing £10-15 (as of Feb 2018). Picture is of their Beef on the bone Sunday Lunch for £13.75
